I saw this movie in theaters and I'M SO GLAD YOU SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED THE PRODUCT PLACEMENT. I remember sitting in my chair and thinking at the end of the movie 'Wow, that was a LOT of product placement, like a LOT', so I'm so glad you brought that up!
I don’t know I think it’s because of how my life I guess revolves around products that we buy and use that I have grown numb to product placement because if you think about it, we do the same thing that is featured in movies like we see different brands. Will have someone ask about where we got our stuff said New York comic con alone on where I bought my little portable fan because I was cosplaying it Velma because I was wearing a sweater so I never understood why people get upset about product placement because of this because I live in a very consumer area I guess
When guillermo del toro was mentioned i was like what, guillermo, really? That was guillermos? And then ghost buster mentioned "ah I see" the end for me, thank you for the video
I'm glad Del Toro lent his talents elsewhere. Disney would never have allowed him to make an actual horror movie. Plus, he made Pacific Rim instead. So it was all worth it. 🤖👍
@@AgentGodzillaRP1701 that is the closest that we got to his version of the haunted mansion and it is probably what he would’ve went with just slightly tone down and hilariously one of my favorite parts is that the first time me and my dad watched that movie is that he literally looked at me and said this feels like the haunted mansion movie, which is a movie I remember at least my childhood always no matter what part of the movie it is alongside with Beetlejuice
The idea we might not have gotten Del Toro's wonderfully human and heartfelt vision for Pacific Rim to instead get some Disney corporate hackjob of his Haunted Mansion movie makes me think we might not be living in the *absolute* worst timeline, because whichever one did have that happen is definitely worse.
The problem with the film is that it wasn't scary. It had big budget special effects but was basically a mild Disney Channel film designed to be as inoffensive as possible. It was not a horror movie. It was just a mystery movie with ghosts, ghosts which weren't scary. It seemed like it was aimed at a younger audience but was advertised like it was a big mainstream film.
Making it proper scary could have made it more memorable, but the execs played it safe on the horror because they didn’t want to risk upsetting parents. The first Hocus Pocus did more with the scary stuff.
OK as someone who is a fan of the ride It has some scary moments in the beginning, but once you Leota, it gets all silly and now you’re surrounded by ghosts having a good time you have a bit of a scary moment in the attic, but other than that, you having a haunting great time so realistically, it needs to be a scary movie for the first half Just for it to become silly ghostly fun in the second half and I guess that’s the essence of the ride. It has an element of scaring you start looking.
As a kid i loved seeing a black family be the lead in the OG, it was nice seeing myself or my family in some of the fun family banter. Eddie was great in it and it was actually SCARY at points. It felt like my first scary movie!
I second this. The production literally had Lasse Holstrom (Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat) directing but then went under a month of reshoots directed by Joe Johnston and cost between $120-133 million to make. All for a movie with a very generic fantasy plot and bland characters. Which sucks imo since some of the costume and set design had a decent amount of effort put into it.
The trailer had me SO excited for the film. Showing the ballet scene (which is 100000000000% without a doubt the star best scene in the film) mixed with some action and the badass version of the OG Nutcracker score… ugh… brilliant. The film lived up to none of that. Save for the ballet scene.
We were robbed of Guillermo Del Toro's Haunted Mansion starring Ryan Gosling. I'd say that's the movie's second biggest flaw, with the #1 being a Halloween movie released in July.
I saw a post from someone that said instead of live action remakes, Disney should’ve done Muppet remakes. I haven’t been the same since, now I’m just mad it’s been over 10 years since the most recent Muppet film.
Pirates of the Caribbean didn't succeed because it was an adaptation of a theme park ride, it succeeded because was a damn good pirate movie. That simple fact flew over Disney's heads.
There is a MASSIVE haunted mansion fandom. The problem is we were all waiting FOR YEARS for Del Toro’s hatbox ghost movie. When it was replaced most of us saw the writing on the wall & were naturally less excited. Disney really messed up
Gotta launder that money somehow and then declare bankruptcy and take in more money from less taxes! That’s what happened on The Acolyte for Lucasfilm/Disney. This has been their strategy since 2019.
What’s worse is they aren’t “bad” bad they are just dull. If they were AWFUL then maybe they’d get a second life for bad movie fans but they are so just meh they don’t have a life out of cinemas
I just watched it for the first time and didn’t mind it, I found it entertaining enough but it really doesn’t hold a candle to the original which does make it feel more disappointing.
I think the biggest problem with this one is also like the Eddie Murphy version it tried too hard to not be scary when the ride found a perfect balance of dark humor and scares.
@@pink-a-palouza7888Not entirely because this version has it’s own plot along with the Hatbox Ghost as the villain while the one with Eddie Murphy didn’t
Disney overthinks everything into shit. Jerry Seinfeld once said, "There's no such thing as fun for the whole family," and he was right. A scary movie has to be scary and an expensive, FX-heavy movie has to be inventive and original to be memorable and successful. We've all seen effects. They have to show us something new for the audience to care. Disney execs are choking the company into a stupor.
the original film was SO good imo. i remember being hyped for the new one and then I heard nothing about it and eventually forgot about it. still haven't seen it, and even less likely to now after watching this. is a shame.
They struck gold getting Gore Verbinski to direct the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films and they would’ve struck gold again with Del Toro, but nope.
Oh okay, so I wasn't the only one with that problem... I noticed its brightened a little in this video, so I thought my movie was just weirdly dark, but no, agreed. There were so many scenes where I outright could not see what the characters were responding to lol
I saw this movie on Disney+ last year and thought it was fine tbh. I loved the first Haunted Mansion movie as a kid, so I didn't understand why this movie even needed to exist and didn't rush to go see it in theaters. Still, it was better than I expected, though that might be a product of the already very low expectations I have with live action Disney movies. As an aside, while I agree that there are too many side quests going on, I actually did like the parts with sea captain ghost. Somewhere in the convoluted script, there's a great short film about the main character helping this ghost get back to the sea he's been yearning so long for.
Better than expected because I had such low expectations is exactly my feelings towards it too. It was entertaining enough but it definitely pales in comparison to the original. If it was a stand-alone I think it might have been better received overall if still just a middling to fair movie on average.
i really feel like last year was a big wake up call for Disney. even if they didn’t know how well Barbie and Oppenheimer would do, they still thought that just because they were Disney it automatically meant audiences would choose their remake over the comeback film of Chris Nolan and the passion project of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. the Barbenheimer trend was unexpected but these films still had so much hype even before the trend blew up. but Disney thought they would be more successful simply because they were Disney. and it was a narrative that flooded into a large portion of their movies since 2019. hopefully, with the new direction of the MCU, they’ve finally learned that a name isn’t going to carry them to success anymore.
i’m a firm believer haunted mansion CAN be adapted into a good film. i’m sorry but why haven’t disney realized this is a ip that should be ANIMATED. stop motion claymation to be specific.
Most of his *current* roles seem to be from projects that started casting, production, and/or filming in the early to mid ‘10s. He hasn’t done anything to get him removed from a project, and he’s still a well known name, so I guess that’s the reason he’s still attached to these films coming out. (Remember, Morbius and even Tron Ares was in production YEARS [nearly a decade] ago.) I haven’t heard of any future projects (that are in preproduction) where Jared Leto was casted.
Still think Leto voicing Hatbox was... ...certainly a choice! I really don't get why they chose him since he could have been voiced by absolutely anyone. Wasn't Jim Cummings or Doug Jones literally right there?
It wasn’t our choice. I mean, he does do a surprisingly great job very intimidating. Honestly, I’m more scared of him being the hatbox ghost on that joker which you’re supposed to feel a little intimidation from the joker not his. Also, a bunch of girls on Tumblr has fallen in love with the hat. Box goes in the decaying form by the way, not the handsome human form based off Leto‘s face. There are some who do like his face though.
@@sleepy_pommie you would think that, but technically they are still on Disney’s payroll so it’s probably out of the result of them doing other different roles or were never asked
I liked this movie, but I had no idea it came out over the summer. I heard absolutely nothing about it over the summer and I thought it was just a Disney+ movie
Halloween has nothing to do with it. Horror movies are released outside of Halloween all the time, and you can’t even ride the original version of Haunted Mansion at Disneyland during Halloween (it’s already dressed up for Christmas). It failed because it was bad, and it was bad because it was unfocused and convoluted. The script was mostly bad improv and product placement, and they turned actual characters from the ride into uninteresting boogeymen.
Went to Disney World in January and caught covid. Watched this movie during my isolation and rather enjoyed it because it stuck a lot closer to the lore of the rides (especially since I'm from the New Orleans area). Having said that, I completely understand all of your criticisms of this movie. lol I'll just add that I think a lot of people probably skipped it in the theaters since I knew it would be on the streaming service in a few weeks anyway. And I hope I'm wrong... but I'm already looking forward to your Tron Aries video.g
i really hope we get another movie based on a disney ride thats actually good some day. that or in 20 years they make yet another haunted mansion movie because itd be really funny
The one thing I liked about the new Haunted Mansion movie was it's portrayal of Grief and Loss. My Mom passed away 4 months prior to the film's release. When I watched how LaKeith Stanfield's character and the young boy (I forgot his name) discuss and handle their grief, it was refreshing to see that on screen and helped me cope with my own loss since Grief is often seen as kind of a taboo subject that SHOULD be discussed more openly. That being said, the points brought up in the video were the same issues I had with the movie. If Disney stopped being afraid of pushing the boundaries for a minute and had let Del Toro direct with his original idea (and with a release date around Halloween), the film could've been very successful.
As someone that deeply loves The Haunted Mansion Eddie Murphy movie, I’m glad this slop of a remake has warmed people up a little bit to the original Eddie one. I found the plot of the remake boring and predictable, even cliche. Not to mention Disney really shooting themselves in the foot with having Jared Leto in the cast when it was well known by that point how many bad things Leto had done to receive bad press to the movies he was included in, helping to cause the movies to fail.
I really like this movie Its far better than the first one, and does actually do interesting things Like right off the start, “oh this house is haunted? nah we are Leaving!” Just like the old eddie murphy standup bit So, why cant they just leave in this one? *The Ghosts Will Follow You Home* I love the reality bending the house goes through as the hauntings get worse- its always a little silly when some haunted mansion films have these houses be utterly ludicrously huge beyond reason I also like that they have one of the main themes be about grief and depression Dealing with being on the verge of outright suicide even Vs the original film, eddie murphys character journey is just….spend more time with his family. Which he does spend a lot of time with his family he just works a little to much, thats not enough of a character flaw nor does it in any way tie into whats going on in the film The movie even perfectly sets up an emotional gut punch towards the end with the cat I love the idea of “ghost winks” as everyone talks about how “oh my mom always loved hummingbirds and i see a hummingbird when im sad i know its her!” And the payoff that the cat that keeps showing up at his doorstep every day he goes home is named *Tater Tot*, his wifes favorite snack (and ultimately what sadly got her killed as she went to go get some) is such a great emotional payoff that hits you in the feels And im gonna say it….im gonna defend the product placement mentions Yes, really. Why? Because everyone i knows talks Exactly like that When someone says they are going to get ice cream, they say ice cream But if they say they are going to baskin robins, theyll fuckin say baskin robins Everyone i knows sits there and laments that ya i shoulda cancelled my subscription to amazon Or that yes i bought that at cvs Is it product placement? Duh But its also realistic dialogue
I really like this movie and had a pretty good homage to the ride. It’s not exactly a film I’m wanting a sequel to but this film is a Halloween watch in my house now.
I remember getting so many ads for the movie just out of the blue like a week before it premiered and then crickets, and it came out at such an odd time. I actually caught it on cable tv this weekend and thought it was entertaining enough, it wasn’t amazing but I don’t always need amazing just some nice escapism for a couple hours is good. I also think if there wasn’t the original 2003 movie I think it might have been a little better received since a direct comparison makes it apparent that it doesn’t really hold a candle to that movie, at least in my opinion. I think it could have actually been something really good but it was still fine overall.
8:08 I guess that explains why I had never heard about this movie until this video. I suppose in a way that's good to hear; the strike actually had an impact that I could see.
I watched it on streaming sites around Halloween last year. The problems; I was on bed rest, my rib was broken and my muscle torn. I lasted 30 minutes and went to sleep. Never wanted to see the rest. It just wasn't interesting enough. Yet the original is one of those movies I've seen dozens of times.
I actually saw this film in theaters with a friend and a week earlier we had gone to see Barbie In all honesty we very much preferred Haunted Mansion over Barbie by miles. But the timing of its release is definitely a reason to why it flopped.
I didn't even know there was a remake, the original movie was alirght for what it was. I remember seeing it with my parents and having a good time at the movies.
Took the family to see this in theaters towards the end of its run. It was fun but was so safe. Pirates knew what it wanted to be. Haunted Mansion was lukewarm
There was a good version of The Haunted Mansion, and it was released a couple years before on Disney Plus, it was their Muppets version. It was short and enjoyable, just like the ride
Considering how Guillermo Del Toro was working on his own Haunted Mansion adaptation that was supposed to have the Hatbox Ghost as a central figure before it got scrapped, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Hatbox Ghost being the main villain and his backstory were elements from that scrapped Del Toro version that somehow got carried over into this new version. Would explain why the backstory of the titular mansion feels so convoluted. I feel personally it would’ve been better to just have had Master Gracey’s backstory and cut out the Hatbox Ghost’s and the character and just have it be Ben and Master Gracey learning to let go of their grief of losing their loved ones and moving on.
I always feel like these ride-based movies are destined to tank (pirates aside). Unless they’re actually marketed as new, fleshed ideas to international audiences. I had no idea this was based around a ride, I thought it was just a lazy name. How am I supposed to know about a ride in Disneyland? Haunted Mansion, Tomorrowland, Jungle Cruise… they sound like comedies of their genres. Like “scary movie”. The names are so basic and naked that there’s no mystery or character. It reads like a running title that was never changed. Disney either had to provide context to int. Audiences OR make it clear these are franchises that the audience will find it worth investing in… starting by giving it a name with an ounce of personality … pirates having “curse of the black pearl” meant the movie was clearly to be franchised, but gave a hint on narrative being a key component. It meant to me, as a non-Disney goer that there is a movie about pirates in the cardigan who are cursed by a mysterious black pearl. It’s really that simple. Pirates of the Caribbean on its own is nice but there’s no intrigue. It’s like saying “pirate movie” In fact, I went all this time not knowing it was a ride at Disneyland. I thought it was just a fresh concept. Silly me, how could Disney have a fresh concept! If they named Haunted mansion something like Haunted mansion: terror of the hatbox man Or something else that signifies its - kid friendly - not a mock of the horror subgenre - not cheaply named - has a narrative As far as casting goes, having both Wilson and Devito genuinely made me think that it was a comedy of the genre. The colour in posters affirmed that it wasn’t scary at all, perhaps kid friendly, but it was a whimsy time. Which made me not want to see it - I’m neither of those audiences
It seems to me that 99%of all the failed mega projects is the fear of paying for decent writers. If you have interesting stories and characters people can care about you cam make so much of this work. But most of these giant flops have nonsensical plots and idiotic mannequins instead of characters people can root for. But the corpo executive idiots who are just glorified accountants don't know a story from a hole in the ground. So screw the whole Hollywood system. It's just a sinkhole of incompetence.
Congrats on getting your first sponsor! Means channel is going in a good way 👌 Consider making videos about lesser known but good movies that are now classics and were not at their time.
I watch several people on TH-cam that discuss movies regularly. I’ve never heard of this movie once and I’m generally confused how I’ve never even heard of this crap
Probably not gonna see this one after all of the goodwill and brand image Disney lit on fire in the past few years. Casting Jared Leto is yet another sin on the pile
I still despise how the hatbox ghost was portrayed. Casting Jared Leto was bad enough, but taking an iconically creepy character like that and making him a generic monologuing villain just felt insulting. I don't know how Del Toro would have handled him, but I'm sure as hell he wouldn't have been spouting exposition all the time like a damn audiobook. Just let the visuals and atmosphere speak for themselves, the audience doesn't need everything spelt out for them.
i just HAVE to imagine one dumbass executive set the date to stream in october and single-handedly made this movie into a flop, it's the only explanation i can muster up
For me what the issue was, was there were too many stars and too many "main characters". It should have been the mother and son who reach out to the "priest" who knows a guy and that should have been the cast vs the ghosts. Every other person took away from the story and made it feel mashed together
The funny thing is they couldn’t say we are racists for not liking it because the original was loved by everyone and the original actor was also black 😂
What frustrates me is that the Haunted Mansion should by far best the EASIEST ride to adapt for a movie. And it astounds me that they keep messing it up.
Except for the fact that the Haunted Mansion only exists in the USA and Japan. Disneyland Paris has the Phantom Manor, and Hong Kong Disneyland has Mystic Manor. Both created to give those parks their own unique identity. As, until very recently, Tokyo Disneyland was just a copy-and-paste park.
I think this movie was the definition of a “death by trailer” movie. As soon as I saw the promos that seemed to be pushing lame CG effects and cringy humor over actual spooky vibes, I knew it was gona be awful. Honestly I do think a new good Haunted Mansion movie could exists with fans that would see it and make it popular, but it would have to be an actually spooky horror movie that focuses on impressive practical effects and dark humor (something like the original Hocus Pocus or Addams Family), over cheap looking CG and forced celebrity cameos. And I sadly don’t see Disney putting the effort in making any movie like that any time soon…
What are you talking about? The Haunted Mansion was a huge success… unfortunately it was with the Muppets and the Muppets aren’t exactly the golden child for Disney in the same league as literally everything else they have.
Saw this on Disney+ last year. I thought it was fine. Nothing amazing, but nothing horrible either. Just okay. Although, I admit the original would've been the better movie out of the two if it scrapped all of the subplots revolving the family characters and just focused on the goth romance between Sarah/Elizabeth and Master Gracey. I still don't get why the movie didn't come out in October. It would've made more sense for it to come out then.
I would have seen this movie but I didn't even know it existed. I don't understand how Disney can spend $100mil marketing something without literally everyone knowing about it.
The movie was ruined by too many characters and a bad script. I feel like there was an earlier draft where Owen Wilson’s, Danny Devito’s, and Tiffany Haddish’s characters didn’t exist - and all the conflict took place between Lakeith and Rosario’s characters.
Grats on the sponsor Tom! Moving up in the world, I'm glad you're hitting your stride! Also nice to see a video on such a recent film - Disney truly doesn't learn their lesson sometimes. Are you going to expand this series to other companies trying to make the next big thing? Universal's Dark Universe films come to mind.
The ride is my favorite theme park ride ever, and I admire an attempt to make a more accurate adaptation of it...issue is I think the set design and costume/make-up work in the 2003 movie is a lot better anyway. To sum it up, the 2023 movie feels like it was filmed on a set whereas 2003 feels like it was shot in a real haunted house, and that's baffling to me when 2023 is trying so desperately to appeal to fans who know how much small, authentic detail the ride has
Besides both “Haunted Mansion” movies being terrible and unnecessary, Disney seems to forget the ride only exists in the USA and Japan. Disneyland Paris has the Phantom Manor with its own, exclusive storyline. While Hong Kong Disneyland has Mystic Manor, which is not an enchanted (but not haunted) house. This was done to give those parks their own identity. So unless a “Haunted Mansion” film was great, akin to what Del Toro would have done, there was no audience. As there were not enough people in the world with nostalgia for the ride.
I haven't watched the movie but just from the promotional material alone it seemed like it also had massive tonal dissonances. I remember watching the trailer and thinking: "So, is this supposed to be a scary classic haunted house flick, or is it slapstick comedy?"
I wish they had made a Haunted Mansion series on Disney+ instead. 6-8 episodes starting with the first ghosts and focusing chronologically on one story each episode. Like the Duelists, Constance, The Ball. madame Leota. and maybe a few others here and there . or the hitchhiking ghosts----that is if they really wanted the ride to be the center. Otherwise they could have just started fresh and totally begun new-with no connection to the ride but originality isn't in vogue at Disney right now.
Absolutely. I want to see more on the stories of the ghosts and what is happening with them. Why are the ghosts there ? What did they do to wind up in the mansion ? The living people are boring. The last movie seem to be written by someone who hasn’t even been on the ride ,just heard about it second hand . I would also would have loved to have seen Del Toros version. I bet he got it right.
Wym? The movie pretty much ignores the lore of the ride too. It seems to think that Constance and the old lady in the stretching room are two different characters, and it acts like the house is not that it’s a retirement home for ghosts.
@@connordugard7007 The fisherman ghost was a part of the original ride. He has his own origins story. The Grave that Constance sits on in the stretching portraits is that of George Hightower, who is related to Harrison Hightower, owner the Hightower Hotel (Tokyo Disneys Tower of Terror & Mystic Manor) Gracey Manor and Crump Manor: The two mansions in the film are modeled after the Haunted Mansions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, respectively. Theres elements of the ride in the movie, such as the library busts, floating candelabra, the stretching rooms (not just the portrait room) the dualling portraits. They really shot themselves in the foot with that July release, like damn. Probably would've done waaay better if they just went with October. It would've most likely still flopped, but still, not nearly as bad as it did.
I'm probably one of the few who thoroughly enjoyed the movie and didn't care less that it came out in the summer. I still went to see it and enjoyed it for what it was - a faithful adaptation of the ride, and that's how I perceived it despite some of the silliness. It was entertaining, and the special effects were great on the big screen. I enjoyed it a lot more than the Eddie Murphy version.
i absolutely adore the haunted mansion, the lore, the ride, and just everything about it. i was really excited to see a new film was being made after 20 years and when i finally got to see it, i was just downright disappointed. my main issue with the new film was that it was just way too long, i got bored halfway from all the various plots happening, i think the movie should’ve focused more on a story close to the rides story rather than the death of the wife and the death of the father. i also thought having multiple popular celebrities kinda threw me off.
I agree with you on every point. To me was okay. The funny thing also is that this movie somehow made the original better for me. I liked the original but I didn't appreciate it enough at the time. Now I praise the original. Also one last thing it is so interesting that we now have 3 different Haunted Mansion movies and different takes on it. The original for a family fun and a bit scary for the kids but beginner friendly horror, Del Toro Penny Dreadful being a serious, darker Gothic Romantic drama and this new one by Disney if you love the ride and want the atmosphere of the ride but also family friendly with less horror.
honestly as a big fan of the original haunted mansion ride in disneyland i loved the film there are a lot of nods to the history of the ride that make it fun to watch if you know a lot about it. but i do see how this film is not for everyone!
I never saw the movie, but from the poster, I assumed that Rosario Dawson's sensible straightwoman character would turn out to have been a ghost all along and the whole movie was about trying to find living guardians for the little boy.
Totally Real Fact: Jared Leto cut off his head and put it in a hatbox to prepare for the role of The Hatbox Ghost

I remembered counting in the car after the movie how many brand names were dropped just because it felt so out of place and excessive

And Crimson Peak
OK as someone who is a fan of the ride
It has some scary moments in the beginning, but once you Leota, it gets all silly and now you’re surrounded by ghosts having a good time you have a bit of a scary moment in the attic, but other than that, you having a haunting great time so realistically, it needs to be a scary movie for the first half Just for it to become silly ghostly fun in the second half and I guess that’s the essence of the ride. It has an element of scaring you start looking.
@@pink-a-palouza7888Well the ghosts are having a swinging wake.
As a kid i loved seeing a black family be the lead in the OG, it was nice seeing myself or my family in some of the fun family banter. Eddie was great in it and it was actually SCARY at points. It felt like my first scary movie!
It was actually a lot of fun, unlike the remake.
I’d like to see you review The Nutcracker and the Four Realms at Christmastime.

Disney really messed up
So Tuesday for Disney
I feel like any of the new Disney movies could be on this "Failed next big thing" genre. They are constantly dumping millions on awful movies 😂
That’s because it’s not the magic of POTC they want to recapture. It’s the money.
I actually enjoyed this movie, but then again, I'm a big fan of the Haunted Mansion ride, so I'm admittedly biased.
"Remake" isn't the right word. It's a re-adaptation.
That’s technically the same titling as the crow 2024
@@pink-a-palouza7888Not entirely because this version has it’s own plot along with the Hatbox Ghost as the villain while the one with Eddie Murphy didn’t
Disney overthinks everything into shit. Jerry Seinfeld once said, "There's no such thing as fun for the whole family," and he was right. A scary movie has to be scary and an expensive, FX-heavy movie has to be inventive and original to be memorable and successful. We've all seen effects. They have to show us something new for the audience to care. Disney execs are choking the company into a stupor.
I gotta say, I completely forgot this movie existed. When I saw the thumbnail I thought this video was going to be about the Eddie Murphy one.
the original film was SO good imo. i remember being hyped for the new one and then I heard nothing about it and eventually forgot about it. still haven't seen it, and even less likely to now after watching this. is a shame.
They struck gold getting Gore Verbinski to direct the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films
and they would’ve struck gold again with Del Toro, but nope.
This movie was way too dark.
As in, I can barely see anything.
Oh okay, so I wasn't the only one with that problem... I noticed its brightened a little in this video, so I thought my movie was just weirdly dark, but no, agreed. There were so many scenes where I outright could not see what the characters were responding to lol
Yes! It's not a fun Halloween movie when you can't even see the spooky mansion!

(Remember, Morbius and even Tron Ares was in production YEARS [nearly a decade] ago.)
I haven’t heard of any future projects (that are in preproduction) where Jared Leto was casted.
Still think Leto voicing Hatbox was... ...certainly a choice! I really don't get why they chose him since he could have been voiced by absolutely anyone. Wasn't Jim Cummings or Doug Jones literally right there?
Maybe they smelled the bad movie and didn’t accept the role
It wasn’t our choice. I mean, he does do a surprisingly great job very intimidating. Honestly, I’m more scared of him being the hatbox ghost on that joker which you’re supposed to feel a little intimidation from the joker not his.
Also, a bunch of girls on Tumblr has fallen in love with the hat. Box goes in the decaying form by the way, not the handsome human form based off Leto‘s face. There are some who do like his face though.

Today, disney has lost their magic. Nothing good will come out from their studio till a major shakeup in the management team.
I really like this movie
Its far better than the first one, and does actually do interesting things
Like right off the start, “oh this house is haunted? nah we are Leaving!” Just like the old eddie murphy standup bit
So, why cant they just leave in this one?
*The Ghosts Will Follow You Home*
I love the reality bending the house goes through as the hauntings get worse- its always a little silly when some haunted mansion films have these houses be utterly ludicrously huge beyond reason
I also like that they have one of the main themes be about grief and depression
Dealing with being on the verge of outright suicide even
Vs the original film, eddie murphys character journey is just….spend more time with his family. Which he does spend a lot of time with his family he just works a little to much, thats not enough of a character flaw nor does it in any way tie into whats going on in the film
The movie even perfectly sets up an emotional gut punch towards the end with the cat
I love the idea of “ghost winks” as everyone talks about how “oh my mom always loved hummingbirds and i see a hummingbird when im sad i know its her!” And the payoff that the cat that keeps showing up at his doorstep every day he goes home is named *Tater Tot*, his wifes favorite snack (and ultimately what sadly got her killed as she went to go get some) is such a great emotional payoff that hits you in the feels
And im gonna say it….im gonna defend the product placement mentions
Yes, really.
Why?
Because everyone i knows talks Exactly like that
When someone says they are going to get ice cream, they say ice cream
But if they say they are going to baskin robins, theyll fuckin say baskin robins
Everyone i knows sits there and laments that ya i shoulda cancelled my subscription to amazon
Or that yes i bought that at cvs
Is it product placement? Duh
But its also realistic dialogue
Thank you! For once someone says this one is better than the 2003 Eddie Murphy one!

In all honesty we very much preferred Haunted Mansion over Barbie by miles.
It’s like saying “pirate movie”
In fact, I went all this time not knowing it was a ride at Disneyland. I thought it was just a fresh concept. Silly me, how could Disney have a fresh concept!
If they named Haunted mansion something like
Haunted mansion: terror of the hatbox man
Or something else that signifies its
- kid friendly
- not a mock of the horror subgenre
- not cheaply named
- has a narrative
As far as casting goes, having both Wilson and Devito genuinely made me think that it was a comedy of the genre.

Probably not gonna see this one after all of the goodwill and brand image Disney lit on fire in the past few years. Casting Jared Leto is yet another sin on the pile
13:48 it what’s a completely unnecessary cash grab
I still despise how the hatbox ghost was portrayed. Casting Jared Leto was bad enough, but taking an iconically creepy character like that and making him a generic monologuing villain just felt insulting.
I don't know how Del Toro would have handled him, but I'm sure as hell he wouldn't have been spouting exposition all the time like a damn audiobook. Just let the visuals and atmosphere speak for themselves, the audience doesn't need everything spelt out for them.

i just HAVE to imagine one dumbass executive set the date to stream in october and single-handedly made this movie into a flop, it's the only explanation i can muster up
No, the movie is just bad and unnecessary. Also, the international markets (apart from Japan) have no nostalgia for the Haunted Mansion.

You should do The Black Hole! It was Disney's attempt to cash in on the success of Star Wars. Surprisingly a very dark Disney film.
This might be the first example of a remake of a failed next big thing.
Never saw this one. Love this series.
Haunted Mansion did so bad it quickly went to Disney+!
It would've made more sense for it to come out then.
i didnt even know this movie came out until now. thought we talking about smth from the 2010s
I would have seen this movie but I didn't even know it existed. I don't understand how Disney can spend $100mil marketing something without literally everyone knowing about it.
12:19 Agreed. I gave up around the forty-minute mark. Too long.
To sum it up, the 2023 movie feels like it was filmed on a set whereas 2003 feels like it was shot in a real haunted house, and that's baffling to me when 2023 is trying so desperately to appeal to fans who know how much small, authentic detail the ride has
I'd like to see multiple movies in this franchise where every movie is a different house and different cast
This movie was surprisingly great. Especially as a fan of the ride I had a blast
Theres so much lore in this movie that unless your a fan of the ride, it'll brush straight past you.
I enjoyed it a lot more than the Eddie Murphy version.
i absolutely adore the haunted mansion, the lore, the ride, and just everything about it.
i was really excited to see a new film was being made after 20 years and when i finally got to see it, i was just downright disappointed.
my main issue with the new film was that it was just way too long, i got bored halfway from
all the various plots happening, i think the movie should’ve focused more on a story close to the rides story rather than the death of the wife and the death of the father. i also thought having multiple popular celebrities kinda threw me off.
Duuude congrats on getting a sponsorship 🎉, about time
Tom Im at break at work and thank you for the easy watch
I actually thought this was going to be about the 2003 film, as I completely forgot the 2023 version was even made.
I hate corporate executives making creative decisions
I hardly ever go to the theater, this was one of two movies I saw that year and I completely forgot about it soooooo...
I never saw the movie, but from the poster, I assumed that Rosario Dawson's sensible straightwoman character would turn out to have been a ghost all along and the whole movie was about trying to find living guardians for the little boy.
