Disney's Failed Next Big Thing: Tron Legacy
Since the early 2000s Disney has been trying everything in their power to recapture the magic of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. With numerous failed attempts at a new franchise they accidentally created a new subgenre of films in the process, a subgenre I like to call the “Failed Next Big Thing”. 2010’s Tron: Legacy could be considered one of these, because although it did well at the box office it never spawned the film franchise Disney hoped it would, and the planned sequel was canceled for many years. In this video I explore the legacy of Tron: Legacy

Can't remember what movie I went to watch, then the D&D trailer popped up before it started, and remember rolling my eyes constantly at it (though it was marvel-like garbage), my partner knowing my love for the franchise asked me if I wanted to watch it and I said "this looks like shit, so nope". Because of some positive reviewers on YT talking about it so well, I bought it off Amazon in 4K, watched it, loved it. It is criminal how badly marketed this movie is/was.

I really enjoyed this movie, but I've not seen it more than once. Somehow it doesn't have replay value for me. I suspect it's because, as you say, it's a heist movie which is not my favourite type of movie and they did use the trope of a group of misfits of which I've quite seen enough. So yeah, I definitely enjoyed it but it doesn't move me to watch it a second time.

The problem with Tron Legacy is the same issue that Paramount always had with Star Trek - they didn't get the audience. The original Tron wasn't a huge success, it is more known for the cgi than anything else so it was unlikely that a sequel done 25 years later was going to be a huge success. But there was an audience for it and with a controlled budget, you could have a successful film and they did. If they had proper expectations then things would have been fine and they would have done a sequel but Disney wanted a massive hit and when they didn't get it, they considered it a failure. Yeah the film was just okay but what's wrong with that? It was entertaining and looked good, that's better than a lot of films these days. It could have been rhe steady franchise that kept making Disney money like Trek was in the 80s but Disney wanted big so they did Marvel and Star Wars and were successful for a while but that has run out and they need a hit - I don't think the new Tron will be it.

I love D&D, been playing it for years. I liked the old movie with Jeremy Irons, even though it was truly atrocious. That being said I was excited for a this movie when it was finally show. The WotC debacle sucked, but I think what helped kill it was the fact that the majority of D&D has been, and still is, played/liked by men. Men usually love this kind of stuff. Then the writing and directing team say something stupid like "Swear to God, it wasn't. We liked that Holga is the bruiser that does the dirty work for Edgin, and he doesn't like to get his hands dirty. We also love emasculating leading men." Saying something like that to a mostly male audience isnt a good idea. Most people I know refused to see this movie after hearing this comment. Myself included. I havent given money to people who dont respect its audience truly. That being said, I have seen this film, and it was a good film, and well written from a narrative but also lore side. The characters are likeable and pretty much how a table would play them. It just sucks that people had to ruin it before hand with comments or "political crap" that doesnt need to be said or included in film. You make all great points but you're missing the elephant in the room. It wasn't <diverse> enough for Bob Iger Disney. This was right when dEi was being implemented full boar into Disney with Kathleen Kennedy taking over Lucasfilm shortly after this film was made. Of all the things out there - I want a sequel of this the most. 90% of sequels, prequels, remakes, and reboots are just trash and nobody even asked for them. This one I think almost ANYBODY who saw would love a sequel and it deserves one. It's story would be perfect for a sequel too - just like classic d&d - each short campaign is a new movie with a new plot.

The Rock was fine in a comedic role in Central Intelligence, where he wasn't the main character. In this one, it didn't work, nor was Emily Blunt able to bring the movie up. She's a serious actor and not really fit for comedy.

Man this was the first film to try this whole de aging like that. Instead of just make up or flashing words on the screen this is suppose to be 39 year old Jeff not 59 year old Jeff haha they tried this. We now see it more and more. And it’s gotten better and figured out what to do an out to do And it’s gotten better although they haven’t figured out what to do about the voice when they take a actor who is much older and de-age him 50 years…looking at you and Indiana Jones. Anyway tron. You gotta start somewhere. And remember it was film in 2008-2009. It might not feel it but technology has changed so much since then. The behind-the-scenes footage you could see the Director using an iPhone 3G which depending on if it was a S or not is the 2nd or 3rd iPhone ever made! Think about how much a iPhone has changed since then. Hell BlackBerry which no longer exists was the best selling smartphone by miles then too. Anyway imagine that kind of progress and computer power change but more because they have massive budgets. So watch as if you were in 2009 and this was the first to ever try on things not 2024 when the technologies are better but then Indiana Jones ruined the technology haha. I do agree tho modern Disney sucks so I fully expect the new tron to suck. They will probably make it one big political statement and creepy Leto fest. I wish they had done the 3rd right after legacy. Legacy to me was not bad it was good actually I know some people it’s their favorite ever. Ok yes it was a weaker plot but aren’t most movies like that? Someone revenge or saving family. To me, the real problem was the actors Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. They picked what they thought were beautiful people instead of picking great actors who are also attractive. Garrett is not a good actor seems like a guy who depends on his looks and his looks seem like the type that should be in a B movie it’s cheesy look it’s out of place like his smile. He was unlikeable very linear boring same 2 emotions. Can just smile or act like a sad brat and expect it to help the film. You didn’t root for him. No depth unlike Jeff. And Olivia has never been good it’s her looks only why she was popular. She’s worse than a b actor. She looks and Feels uncomfortable and out of place (which she is) every time she was in front of the camera. And I don’t know if they told her to act like a boring idiot that’s 20 but 6 but no. If you can fight like that drive like that do the things she’s can do read what she’s read etc in the film you are not some 25 year old stuck as a 6 year old you’re not some naïve idiot like that. Yes you’d be different growing up and only being around a old guy but you wouldn’t come off like a stupid 6 year old instead of a brilliant weird awesome person like she was suppose to be. Anyway it was good Could’ve been better with some twists and turns in the plot and those two actors replaced. Hell the blonde girl that prepared him for battle actress Beau Garrett would have been better then Olivia and she’s the first to tell you she was new acting she was a super model before but she would have tried harder and had more emotion and pulled off the 25 year old sheltered only 1 friend her whole life quorra way better and not just played a idiot with a pretty face. I think replacing those 2 alone would make the film better to be honest. Wouldn’t need to add to the plot at all probably. Anyway the soundtrack as a whole is arguably the best ever soundtrack definitely one of the best it’s in the top 10 of everyone’s for sure. It’s epic. I still listen today and back in 2010 i listened non stop. Hell i probably listened to it non stop until daft punk random access was released and i was not a diehard fan of that type of music. I liked daft I respected them and owned their albums but preferred rock. That film and soundtrack came out and omg. I still prefer rock but that type of music is right up there with rock now for me and that’s thanks to Tron soundtrack and daft punk. Shame they won’t be doing number 3. Probably a good thing tho as I’m sure Disney has ruined Tron. Shame. Well at least we got legacy even with those 2 actors and somewhat weak script it’s still a excellent movie and a great soundtrack! Maybe those people will come back and make Tron 4 well all but the 2 crap actors I mentioned haha.
