2013’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is yet another failure of a franchise that was forgotten about during the YA novel turned movie craze of the early 2010s. Despite being based on a popular book series and having a dedicated fanbase, it failed to reach the heights of other similar film series like Twilight or Harry Potter.
In this video essay I take another look at this film, to examine the history, explore why it never got a sequel, and offer up some of my thoughts on why it failed with so many viewers.

Disney's Failed Next Big Thing: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
มุมมอง 114K28 วันที่ผ่านมา
Since the early 2000s Disney has been trying everything in their power to recapture the magic of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. With numerous failed attempts at a new franchise they accidentally created a new sub-genre of films in the process, a sub-genre I like to call the “Failed Next Big Thing”. These are movies that Disney dumped tons of money into making, but more often than not t...
Why Mortal Engines Failed

On paper it seemed like Mortal Engines was a project that should have performed well, it’s based on a popular books series and had Peter Jackson’s name attached. Those two ingredients gave us some of the greatest films of all time. But in 2018 it resulted in one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. In this video essay I take another look at this forgotten flop, to see what went wrong an...

2017’s Power Rangers was a film that had a lot of hype leading up to its release, but once it came out it was quickly forgotten by a majority of moviegoers. Although it may have its fans and staunch supporters, it certainly didn’t kick start the franchise that the filmmakers and studios hoped it would, and we never got to see the sequel that was teased at the end of the film. Predictability is not a weakness. but in addition to everything else, I can see why you put it in as a flaw...
People the world over don’t want to enjoy things that lowkey portray DEMONS in a positive light.
John Carter is actually a good movie.
I thought allegiant would make a really cool video game
If you enjoyed the movie, but you are more a fan of slowly progressive characters - watch Impulse the TV series. Its beautifully written. It's first a drama series, then a supernatural series. It focuses so much on acting, building characters, making you feel invested. The powers slowly appearing. I loved every minute of it.
IMPULSE is a masterpiece !!! Completely underrated. Go watch it!
The Elvis biopic is trash. Pure trash.
Hollywood action movies/shows in a nutshell: an American from 21th century gets transferred into a fantasy world, therefore he/she is awesome and everyone can be his/her role playing steps toward greatness. also also, featuring a husband as director and a wife as the main character. Tony Stark: *"not a good plan"*
Because it was SHIT
almost every protagonist was a generic white guy with blonde or light colored hair with no personality wonder why they failed :)
I honestly did not like gladiator two at all. Felt way too similar to the first one while having me not care about any of the characters nearly as much
Lets be honest, it failed cause of Jaime Foxx
why?
I'm pretty sure the last time a robin hood got a positive audience reaction in a movie theater was in Shrek 1.
I am with you. This is a severely forgotten movie and should have done better. I do think that the ratings for the movie are accurate, though. But it is still a good turn of your brain and just go along for the ride movie.
Jai Courtney killed every franchises his in
Well who wants 5 Ironman
The best Robin Hood? My favorite cartoon version has to be Disney's Robin Hood. My favorite live action version has to be the one from the 90s. Now, the best overall version has to be Robin Hood Men on Tights it is absolute comedy gold.
I'm so sad that this movie bombed because I absolutely loved it, it's one of my favourite movies, I thought it was perfect! I think it failed simply because we're in an era where no one wants to see an unknown scifi IP. People saw Dune despite having zero knowledge of it because "Oh I've heard of that book, that's been around for yonks, that's meant to be a good book" But this movie, even though the visuals are just as impressive if not better? Nah let's just see iron man 6 or whatever, something safe and predictable, why take a risk. Sad.
I loved this movie for the same reason you did: The world building. I didn't enjoy the acting for the most part, the plot was indeed too simple and there were so many scenes/chacarters/dialogues that didn't add up to anything (this is kinda unfair, since they surely planned to explore those in future movies).
Great analysis. This movie holds a similar place as "Mortal Engines" in my heart. I know they aren't all that great but I still loved to watch them, I'll surely rewatch both when I get the chance. An idea for next videos: Scavengers Reign and the Dark Tower
They also did a crossover/tie-in with the History Channel show Forged in Fire.
The only thing good was the girl riding the polar bear, the rest is forgetable. Its mostly an adult- centric film that doesn't appeal to kids who wanna see kids not adults and thus can't relate. Its just a young girl in an adult world with talking animals, its just not entertaining.
When I saw this movie, I thought to myself :" John using his powers remind me of DragonBall z and that's how a live action DragonBall z fight scene should look like." I'm referring to the football field fight scene.
To be fair Allegiant was a horrible book. It’s probably for the best that the films diverged from the books, but it didn’t matter at that point as I wasn’t going to watch it because that last book was that bad.
I liked the 2003 movie……
I knew Ender's Game was getting YA-fied when they aged him up for the movie. Ender is an actual child when the story starts and experiences many of his most psychologically traumatizing/character-shaping experiences as a young kid, it definitely doesn't hit the same in the movie with an already teenage Ender. I also won't forgive the movie for turning Petra into a YA love interest, I absolutely HATED what they did to her character.
Not gonna lie, not a good thing that their lead MC actress had the personality of a wet paper bag.
Not gonna lie, not a good thing that their lead MC actress had the personality of a wet paper bag.
I loved the hell out of tron legacy Everything about it Specially the soundtrack I am a HUGE daft punk fan
All the marketing failures reported remind me on Snow White.
They were planning a second one but cancelled it
I have a vibrant memory of watching this in the cinema being the ONLY person in the seats. Weird experience, weird movie. Actually such an insane decision that they made the WWWs motivation being "a woman scorned" AFTER Wicked. Funnily as I was studying in uni years later they just had a random cut out from the movie standing outside one of my classrooms. I never got the story for that one.
I personally loved this movie (and hated the TV series). 🤷♂️
The books were amazing on of my favorite series honestly it was up there with Harry Potter in my opinion but it seemed like the author lost interest in the final book like he was just trying to grind out a decent ending and honestly failed. The end of the last book kind of ruined the franchise for me it was the definition of anticlimactic.
I've never read the book, but I love this movie
I watched this movie a few years back and thought it was really good, in an "old timey" way. If you told me this was made around the same time as star wars i would have believe it. I still think it was engaging, but the title "John Carter" is hard to remember and doesn't hook anyone in, and i remember the beginning being weird. Still, i liked it
At the time this movie came out I was a fan of the books. I don't remember much about it, but I do know that I was disappointed.
Such a great book series. I must say, I read a lot of great books as a child / teenager.
i saw it last year and i thought it was pretty nice. Loved the worldbuilding, though looking back, it would have been cleaner and maybe a little more immersive.
I could have sworn the movie let the audience know that Valentine was lying when he told Jace and Clary that they're siblings. Maybe it was the show. It's an interesting choice that spoils what's supposed to be a big reveal in the third book, but maybe it was a calculated move made to keep viewers who might have freaked out if they thought the incest was real.
I am number 4 push and this were all some of my favorite movies 😂😂
They made a Jungle Cruise movie 😂
Personally, I enjoyed the T.V. series Shadow Hunters a lot more.
I only got about ten minutes in, there was nothing in the story or the acting to make me want to keep watching but the biggest problem was the visuals, and the costuming in particular. It just looks so so painfully generic. The European middle ages had a lot of fashion choices that look funny or weird to modern audiences so I understand why they wanted to strip them away from a "serious action movie" interpretation, but nothing interesting after that. You'd think the time period bending thing would've lead to a unique looking movie but they didn't go hard enough on any of the designs in my opinion so all the anachronisms just looked stupid and lazy.
Saying something got "second life" on Disney+ is like saying the corpse is good and healthy and lives a fulfilling because it was put into mausoleum onto display instead of buried.
I just watched Better Man. My wife went with me and didnt know it was about a real person. her response was "so its about musicians as a whole?" I agreed with her haha!
If they would’ve cast Eminem they’d of had their trilogy
Rap World ❤
finding out that they cast the lightning thief movie with sequels in mind is baffling like what do you MEAN, you aged the characters way way up, how do you expect them to still be believably young by the time you get to book five???
My dad loved this movie so much He kept the DVD from Netflix lol
