Man, like the good Dr. says here, tapering long and slow is DEFINATELY the way to go. But after 8 years of 8-16 mgs per day, I HAD to stop, cold turkey (long story).
Took me 2 tries: After 12 days of complete and utter SOUL-CRUSHING agony, I caved the first time -- I just couldn't take it anymore. Went back on about 3 mgs per day for one month, which was just enough to feel ok again after 12 days without.
Second attempt: Committed to the Vitamin C Megadose Protocol -- Started taking as much Liposomal Vitamin C that I could handle without getting diarrhea which for me, was about 2000 - 3000 mgs - EVERY TWO HOURS except when sleeping, and believe it or not, IT FREAKIN WORKED.
Started taking them 3 days before quitting, and kept it up for almost 4 weeks. Yeah, that's a LOT of Vitamin C...
It wasnt great, but it did make it bearable. I was actually able to work every day while going through it. I even freakin SLEPT. Not great, but I DID sleep. AND, I never got RLS!! No kidding!
That was over 2 years ago, and I havent had a boxer since. So if you want to put these things in the rear-view mirror and are having a tough time tapering, I'm here to tell you that you can do it - getting off these things IS possible.
Research "High-Dose Vitamin C for Opiate Withdrawal". There are a few great videos here on TH-cam about it, one by Elevation Recovery, and a GREAT one by someone that goes by something like, MaliMalz. Its gotta be the best kept secret on the planet (and I have NO idea why). Try it, IT WORKS.
    Good luck!

@@loriesiets885 WOW, you go girl! Man oh man, it hit me hard the first attempt just after about 3 days in, so it sounds like you're doing freakin' awesome! I think the hardest thing about kicking Suboxone is that the withdrawal symptoms last SO MUCH LONGER, that it just plain wears you so far down after a few weeks that you end up caving. I'm over 2 years off of it now after about an 8 year run and believe it or not, my bowel movements are JUST NOW getting back to normal -- I know, crazy, right?
But WELL DONE, keep it up, you've got this! Just remember that if it does get bad, Gabapentin works wonders too, but the high-dose vitamin C is what really got me through it. But my God, keep it up because I can't tell you how great it is to be able to do things like... plan vacations, etc., without having to worry about having enough of those damn things -- the freedom you'll gain is awesome, and it's well worth the fight. Always remember that the pain is only temporary, and you've got your whole life ahead of you!
Good luck, you've got this! 👍

2 years off suboxone (next week) after 5+ years on consecutively. I still pop by this channel every once in a while because your advice helped me sooo much with my taper.
I graduated with my BSN. Had a baby. Started as an ER nurse in level 2 trauma center and am expecting another little one in the 2 years since quitting.

Sir , I recently lost my insurance. I was on 12 mg a day. I'm down to 8 mg a day. I been on them for 8 years and ready to get off but wasn't expecting to lose my insurance. I have 35 strips left. Not sure if I'll be able to go to my next appointment to get more since I'm paying out of pocket and don't really have the money. How would you suggest I use the next 35 8 mg strips to reduce the withdrawal as much as possible? I have accepted I will be sick. I am just trying to reduce the withdrawal symptoms as muchbas possible. I have been watching a ton of your video's and appreciate every single video you have done beyond I can put into words. Also what over the counter things do you recommend the most i could buy without a prescription to help with the withdrawal symptoms? Thank you so much again sir! Man I hope you see this and have time to answer. I'm pretty nervous.

So being I’m a week off cold turkey of 8mg what can I expect now after one week? I am using clonidine to help and thank you for the reply you are a great doctor that knows a lot about subs. Hey doc I’m feeling on top of the world right now everything feels different I was on sub for 15 years and couldn’t taper but cold turkey I believe has done it for me even though I’m skeptical of withdrawals going into the 2nd week and I hope I don’t start having cravings so what is your thoughts about this being I did cold turkey off 8mg a day.

Hey doc been on 16-24 mg for 2-3 years after getting off of herion and fentanyl. I actually got clean without subs off of the hard drugs but couldn’t get past the paws because I couldn’t sleep a single lick and go to work so I got on subs . It has helped me a ton to repair my life after herion . I got a promotion I have lost 100 pounds and now run between 15-18 miles a week , am about to attend school and work toward a career goal . I am down to 12mg of subs a day and am trying to taper . Can I jump fast down until I get to a smaller dose and then go slow and low ? Or do I need to drag out these bigger doses too?
