Yep! I just begin to think about other things, such as when the car would have been driven out of the showroom, how it looked, soo deep but it’s the human mind😂
I honestly don't know what's wrong with me lately 😫...TheStradman just posted a new video of his all carbon Lamborghini Aventador yet I still chose to watch a video of a £350 18 year old VW Passat and in all honesty i preferred the content 😂. Good work Matt 🤔
I have one now with 125 thousand on it's mint, great engine and the tiptronic auto box is still perfect as well. They all suffer dodgy door lock issue also they tend to let a lot of rain in as well, the drain underneath the battery tends to block and the battery is a absolute b**tard to get out 😂

There are people that pay £600 every month to have a shiny new EV on the drive. I have an old Seat with a 1.9 PD engine at 160K miles. Does me just fine.
Where i live near Windsor to buy even a 2005 Golf with high miles will cost you £1600 and it wont be in good condition so yeah this man knows his stuff
Hi Matt, just wanted to say thank you, bought a lovely 54 plate BMW off you today which I'm picking up in the morning. As expected you have prepared the car to an unbelievable standard and we are thrilled with it. I'm also very happy As I've wanted an E46 tourer for so long. Thanks again and keep up the Sterling work. Cheers Adam.
@@Class68driver Good purchase. I had a 54 E46 touring that someone had chipped. It was rapid. Was a thoroughly good car. Keep your eye on the boot lid hinges. That's the only thing that went wrong for me.
I love this era of VW. Wish they'd go back to it. High quality interior, proper RHD conversion (handbrake, bonnet release moved across) quiet and with great looks to boot. I always remember the first time I sat into one - my ears would pop when the doors closed. They were that well built.
You've not just saved a car from the scrappy Matt, you've kept several people in work and added to the economy. 10/10. You should run for parliament with that track record alone!
Nice to see a B5 saved from the scrapyard. I've always liked the B5 Passats; they were from an era where the Passat was still based on the Audi A4 platform, rather than the more boring MQB platform. As always great video Matt!
These are firmly in that same category as Mk5 Astras and Mk3 Vectras. They’ve got enough features for modern motoring, no major faults and are surprisingly resilient to even the most care free owners deferring maintenance on them. Car throttle had 2 of these PDI engines featured. One had 370k and the other 500k miles on them. Impressive stuff.
Thanks for prolonging useful life of vehicles. at this age and mileage it has 0 carbon footprint, yes, stuff comes out from the tail end but, keeping it alive is still more eco friendly than scrapping it and replacing it with an EV. The longer it stays on the road, the better for the planet- and now, as always, I am off to Autotrader to look for a Passat...
The stuff that comes out of the tail end is the bit that’s bad for the planet isn’t it? Makes sense to keep that on the road for as long as possible then.
@@juicypea8392 yes of course they are polluting but that isn’t the full story. The most carbon-heavy part is the manufacture and EV’s are more polluting than an ordinary ICE car.
I had a 2001 1.8 turbo version of this. Same car before the facelift. Mine was lapis blue. I bought it in 2004 with 50k on it. Sold it with 94k on it in 2007. Next owner had for 10 years and put another 100k on it. Always garaged, synthetic oil from new, premium gas always. Loved it! One of my favorite cars making me want another “wagon” for my next car. Many of these were covered under a corrosion warranty for 10 years but sadly this one is past that now.
I was in a similar situation about 15 years ago with mk3 Mondeo. My wife lost her job (and her company car) so we bought the Mondeo for £900, ran it for 3 years and spent about £600 on maintenance over that time. It was a bit scabby, but utterly reliable, we called it The Dog's Taxi as it carted the stinking hound about and did many tip runs too. It was very liberating to have a car that you didn't care too much about the bodywork, every panel had something wrong, so the odd dink in Tesco's car park wasn't the end of the world.
As I remarked weeks ago every time Matt sees these cars he says it needs a good clean and a set of number plates. If that was only true with every car.
Well Matt that was a steal. Best era of Passat with the best engine (1.9 PD) and its a Highline Estate. These are the kinds of cars that need saving and I'm happy to see another kept on the roads.
Got the same engine in my lovely original 2005 Skoda Fabia vRS. Absolutely faultless still afyter 146,000. Look after these motors, and they'll just carry on going and going. Lovely and almost heartwarming to see that saved. Most excellent.
Great stuff as usual! Seeing this trusty old Passat getting a new lease on life made my evening. You, Sir, are now my favorite car youtuber. It used to be Doug De Muro and Hoovie's Garage, and I still love their stuff, but I'm now officially happier to see a new High Peak vid having been uploaded than a Doug or Hoovie's vid, and for me, that's saying something. Keep up the good work, Sir!
Way above Matt. Doug jabbers on for 4 minutes about key fobs, or door handles, bless him & then spends 8 seconds talking about the engine.... Excuse me, drivetrain! Hooveis a bit of a gobsh**e to be honest & Scottie just screams hysterically whilst kissing Toyotas ass! Yourself, Hubnut & Furious Driving are my favourites by a country mile. Holy sh#t, just realised I hate yanks!!
Hi Matt, loved that Passat. I had a silver 05 plate estate like this one, with 177,000 on the clock. It never failed to start; it was good on fuel, incredible load space with the rear seats down (two mountain bikes all day long) and if a young female driver had stopped at the red light like she was supposed to and didn't rear end me, I would probably still be going. My one was only the five speed, but it was an exceptional car. Glad you spent a bit of time and money on her, which has kept this brilliant car on the road. Enjoy your weekend buddy.
I did a double take when I saw this. My wife had an identical Passat, Highline, 2006 55 plate, same colour etc for 16 years, sold it a couple of years ago, and until I saw the reg number thought it was hers. Back in 2006 we were looking for a used one and Smith Knight Fay in Stockport were selling off a number of these as the newer model was out. They were brand new but cheaper than the used ones we'd been looking at so it was a no brainer. Never had any issues with it for 16 years (apart from the ubiquitous rusty front arches). Mind you we looked after it meticulously, full service history at main dealer then at family friend"s Audi Volkswagen specialist garage in Leek. Great family workhorse. As you often say Matt, if you look after them properly, they'll look after you.
This is from my favourite era of of VW. Their cars from 2000 to 2005 were excellent. Lupo Polo Golf Passat Phaeton Touareg T4 / T5 All of them well made, reliable and long lasting. I particularly like the body bag / duct tape combo in the back of this one 😅
You'll get another 100,000 miles out of this. One of my colleagues has a 115bhp version of this PD engine in his Y-plate A4 Avant B5 (last of old shape, so same as this Passat underneath), Y302VEN. He swears by it. It's now on 215,000 miles and still goes strong and pulls like a train. As a bonus, he's just fitted new Continentals all round. Would make a good car for this channel if you don't mind a run to Devon.
The B6 is pretty much a B5 with a very slightly different front suspension and an independent rear suspension on all models, where as B5s only had it on the quattros. (or 4wd in Passat :P)
In my opinion the PD130 engine is one of the best diesel engines ever made! Im sure this passat is highline spec, which is top spec. With only 180k on the clock, got plenty of life left in the old girl yet
Oh what a great video. My lovely Dad had one of these in silver. He was diagnosed with dementia and I was between cars so my Mum asked me to take it off her hands and use it. It was really rather wonderful. I got a bit spooked by the failure of the door locking system and decided after a few years, to trade it in. Wish I had sorted the locking and kept it. What a fabulous car.
I have the 2004 Audi A4 version if this car and don't seem to have this door lock problem. Bearing in mind it's on 268,000 miles, 19 years old and still used daily. My mk4 VW Golf had the problem, must be more of a VW thing?
Bravo Matt. I drove one of these from 2002, loved it soo much, I changed the a newer Passat in 2012. I honestly say the Passats have been true workhorses and very economical. I sense I will go back to the Passat soon. GOod on you for saving another car from the wreckers!!
Yep, like you I like this era of Passat. Dead simple engine and not too many other gizmos to go wrong plus hugely practical in estate form. Another one saved from the crusher!
That VW Passat is a solid workhorse. My old neighbour used to have one almost exactly like that (he always had passat estates). The time they decided to upgrade to a different car they had so many problems with it!
Well done Matt, you’ve saved another future classic from the crusher. There is a lot more life left in this car, hopefully for quite some time to come, as always great content, I enjoyed watching it 😊.
We had a series of 5-cylinder Passats from 1983 to 1995. My father bought an estate with 33k on the clock at 3 year old. I bought it off him at 88k and sold it at 216k with the original clutch. Only fault was a mechanical fuel pump that cost £13. I serviced it myself. It made a fantastic sound when revved and it would be lovely to own another. The Dream is an Audi 90 2.3 5-cylinder auto. I agree with other comments, the PD 130 is the very best diesel but those 5-cylinder petrols were very reliable.
I drive the same car, a 2004 TDi , and it's even the same colour. It's comfortable, carries no end of stuff, reliable and gives me an average of 50mpg, most of which is town driving. On a run, I'll get 57+ mpg. In February, with 145k on the clock, it needed a new clutch and dual mass flywheel, as well a window regulator and new mirror. The bill was £1,100. Was this a silly spend? I don't think so. If I hadn't had the work done, the car was scrap. Mine doesn't have the rust that your one has, and I know it's solid underneath. So I spent the money and have a car that will likely give me several more years motoring. In any case, what could I have bought for £1,100? Not much, other than yours perhaps. The likely alternative was to go out spend £5 to £7k on a newer car.
Interesting that yours didn't have rust on the front arches. We had a 55 plate with this issue but my wife always used to point out that 2004 Passats usually didn't rust there.
I’ve got a 2004 estate 1.8L 4motion w/ 152K on the clock. Absolutely no rust! But trying to manage with a “bum” DSG dual clutch trans. So it’s decision time. Do I spend the money for a used refurbished trans or junk it? I would really hate to junk it.
We are in the same situation. My 07 Golf TDi has 140K and needs a new clutch and DMF which will cost £950. But the car is rust free and drives so well its a crime to scrap it. And as you mentioned, what can I get for a grand. Most newer cars costing £5 -£7K already have over 100K miles on the clock. We've owned this car almost from new so we know its history and we've decided to spend the money on keeping it on the road for a few more years 😎😎
I had the 2.8 4WD which have been pimped up, tinted windows, and I loved it, especially taking off at traffic lights, and that gearbox was like silk. When VW could make cars.
I bought a 1990 VW Passat in 2001 with 152000 on the clock. I had it for nearly 5 years and it had just under 250000 when I part ex it against a VW Sharan. I can honestly say that car never missed a beat! One of the best cars I’d ever had and I’m a Ford guy.
Great video Matt! I've had alot of the old b5 and b5.5 passats over the years and never had any major issues with them, great workhorses and family cars! Good to see you keeping old cars like this on the road! The variety of old/newish cars that you buy and review continues in the popularity of your video's. 😊
I think it was James Ruppert who coined the phrase “Bangernomics” and I think this car was a perfect example of that theory! Think of what a newer car would have lost in value over a year? I am a EV fan but I totally agree that getting maximum use out of older cars is vital and in its own way “Green” too. Keep the oldies coming!
I love these old cheap banger car videos, because I entirely agree, keeping an old car is better than buying a new one. I have a 22 year old Volvo V40, done 140k miles, on its 3rd cambelt, aircon still works, has heated leather seats, and the 2.0 petrol still keeps up with modern traffic, although it does drink petrol at a rate of knots. I service it once a year and do whats needed for the MOT and it just keeps going, no sign of it dying. I do believe cars from the late 90s and early 2000s are far more reliable than anything made today.
I think my favourite thing about these videos is that your own sales patter works on yourself. Things you’re not bothered about rust, oil leak, 180k miles. Things you are happy about; someone bought 4 shit tyres at the same time 😂 Don’t ever change mate.
@@manfredarcher645yeah I was thinking that too. Gt radials aren't cheap ditchfinders. Definitely a level up from no name junks. They been going for decades and stocked by the big nationals. Not saying they amazing but I'd be happy with 4 newish ones on a 300 quid car😂
100% correct on its better keeping an existing car on the road than some EV which has churned out the damage for decades before it hits the road. Great video.
Back in around 2007 my company had one of these almost identical to yours, it had done over 200k but strangely I loved to drive it, particularly in winter with those heated leather seats. I did a fair few miles in it myself and it never let me down, though to be honest when it wasn’t available the alternative was an auto box Avensis, the slowest car ever produced, made lots of noise but didn’t move anywhere fast
Great result! I think I've got at least one car on the drive at any one time that I saved from scrapping. There's something satisfying about prolonging theblife of something that was going to be thrown away.
Imagine this with the mudguards fixed, some parts sprayed, a polish, and a nice set of wheels and lowering springs. Cool wagon for around 2k total. These are very well built cars. Keep up the great content. 🍻
Hello Matt I enjoy your videos and I want to say that you improved your channels format by giving us updates on your purchased car. I thought previous format of your videos were boring because we only saw the car and history check and drive and thats it. But now you show ending results. My advice to you is if you have time you can add some clips of the car while getting washed or painted or deep cleaned etc. Cheers mate.
Great video as always Matt! I thought about you and your channel yesterday, when an old lady in a Honda Jazz pulled out and continued to drive very poorly in front of me. The part that made me laugh and think of you was the fact she had 9 National Trust stickers partially blocking her rear window, one of her mirrors folded in and two straw hats on the parcel shelf 😂😂 You have been right many times about such people existing in the wild hahahah
i'm rocking a Audi A6 Avant with 1.9TDI AVF 130hp engine for around 7 years, currently 400k km on the odometer and having 0 issues with the engine, most reliable car i ever had
Probably the ultimate VW. My dad bought a new Passat in 2001, tdi 130 SE, then shortly after got a company Range Rover P38 4.6 HSE so I bought the Passat at son’s rates…. For some reason I traded it after a few months for a new X Type V6 which was so awful and had so many faults i part exe’d the Jag for a new Passat Tdi 130 after 3 weeks….. I did 75,000 miles in Passat 2 in 3 years, just such a great car. Then my brother bought it from me and ran it to about 90,000 miles. He was quoted about £900 for the 90,000 mile service and in the end sold it and bought an old Vectra for the £900 . The Passat went to a taxi company who did another 200k in it. I think that was the issue, complex front suspension and expensive cam belt changes meant that many were neglected which is why you don’t see many around these days .
You're a good man Matt to rescue this car from the wreckers. On first seeing the diesel stains below the filler cap, it was obvious that this was not going to be pretty but with that leather interior and a 'good buff' this is looking OK. Pity about the rust around the wheel arches but this Passat (as I remember this model was good) will be on the road for another couple of years at least. Well done.
This is the sort of car you can just get in and drive without having to worry about someone hitting it or pinching the cat . Well worth saving and if the new owner gets even a year out of it he's had a good deal
Glad to see this one saved. I've had a couple of the old PD 130s and they're great cars. The only issue I really had with mine was that at the end of their life, the emissions test was proving difficult to pass. But at least they didn't have any DPF problems! Funnily enough, on the second car I had one wing had really bad corrosion but the other was mint, no idea why not both!.
@@adamanthony7465 Yep, that would have made sense but my bad one was the off-side. I think VW later removed the bit of sponge packer between the wing and liner, which retained water and hence accelerated rusting.
yes since then the passat had no longer the same longitudinal engines as the A6 or A4 from Audi, since then passat was the same as some sh*tty skoda with a transverse engine
I have a 54 version of this in red ♥️ 170,000 had it 11 years and love it. 2 new wings as rotted in the same place but apart from that it's solid, regularly tows 1300kg as if it's not there. Gets up to 50mpg.
One of the best diesel engines of all time. I had an 05 saloon Passat and ran it as a taxi for a couple of years. Bulletproof. Never had a car since with that ‘feel’ of quality, without going high end. They’d probably put a 1ltr 3 cylinder turbo in it now
@@hsj687 they had to find ways to meet the targets which sadly ruled the PD out. Although the CR wasn't good enough either hence the cheating. We've since found out that many other manufacturers were doing similar. When found out they found solutions but horribly compromised. With my previous 1.6tdi for instance it couldn't passive regenerate even at speed as that would make NOx too high, so they made it automatically regenerate when soot loading hit 50 percent. Similar to a pyrolytic oven it would massively elevate exhaust temp to 600 and burn it off to ash. No option to choose to do it on a long journey either so could be in the middle of a town. How clean? Not surprisingly this crazy heating/cooling cycle lead to rubber parts hardening and oil leaks. If you switched engine off during this sounded like a jet on drive such was the fan noise and it smelt like burning. Bonnet really hot. Poor car! Also they started to reduce quality from that era too with stuff not made to last as long, very reliable for a few years and say 60000 miles but then more electronics and complicated parts to break. And many made of plastic and not metal. Pretty much like household appliances. Not in manufacturers interest for stuff to last that long other than reputation versus the competition
The foam block that causes all the corrosion issues on the Passat and Golf was only there to damp down panel drumming, the replacement wings that VW installed under corrosion warranty didn't have them. Anyway, loved the outcome of this car, put a couple of used wings on in colour it will be good for a few more years
I had an '05 petrol, manual (pretty rare for the US market) and it was the perfect commuter and run-around car. Sold it for the next generation which was a nice car but nowhere near as good in terms of simplicity, engineering and reliability. Nice to see this one was saved. This video made me miss that car!
Totally agree, mentioned it before but had my 2005 Celica for nearly seven years , still a tidy old bus and as reliable as ever. Paid £1595 back then and it's probably worth a bit more now. Cheers Matt great video. Please try pick up and a gen 7 Celica to review and sell, I'm sure you wouldn't be dissapointed.
Bangernomics is always the way to go if you don't have to rely on a car for money. I have always bought bangers and put thousands and thousands of miles on each of them and in the last 30 years, I can count on one hand the number of times they failed to get me to work which is probably similar to new cars failure rate but cheaper to repair.
130 is the higher brake horse power on these although I think there was a 150 later on? Both those two significantly more powerful than the base ones were 90/110bhp.
Great cars! I had a Sport TDI 130 Estate in 2002 and drove it very, very hard for work for 3 years / 120k miles. It never missed a beat, so we kept it as a 'spare' car at work and it got thrashed for another few years until eventually at 200k, we decided to to sell it. I drove it again just to see what it was like, everything worked, the suspension was still tight, the engine pulled like a train. Amazing car and engine! I actually miss it. Had a lot of fun and memories made with that car!
A neighbour of mine has just scrapped an identical Passat (identical including the rust but perfect otherwise) I thought it was a bit of a waste. However the following generation of Passat (which was already on sale by the time this one was registered) is a much better car in my view and there's plenty of those around cheaply now.
The rusty wings are a fairly easy DIY repair. I have done two and both look OK and passed MOT OK. I removed the rusty part with pliers and angle grinder, pulled the damp foam out, made a curved metal piece to bridge the gap with aluminium mesh from halfords, glued that in place with filler and then built it up to a nice curve with filler, shape almost perfect and looks good enough.
Ah that sound of the 1.9 PD engine brings back good memories, i had this engine in a seat Ibiza but sadly the engine died at 239,860 miles after 14 years of owning it, i agree 100% that keeping older cars going is better for the enviroment than producing those new EV's
@@itchyscratch3829 I had 2 different mechanics check it over and from what i can remember was both said the bottom end had gone, i was driving down the motor way at the time when out of nowhere it suddenly lost power and rolled to a stop on the hard shoulder, waited 5 hours before the AA finally towed it away!
I had 2 of these highline estates & used them for Taxi"s, such a brilliant engine the 1.9 was, loads of spec for very little money, id sooner have another 20yr old Passat than any ev on the market! keep it dirty! keep it diesel i say!.😃👌👍
Some friends of ours had the same car for a long time, 2000 model year, black, also 1.9 TDI. They had no issues with it for 12 years. This goes to show that these were such good cars, much better than the new ones!
I auctioned my mate’s elderly Dad’s old Passat estate for him via eBay a few years back as he was out of the country. It was a similar vintage and in a similar condition but without the leather interior. It was red and the paint was shot on the bonnet but despite this I had loads of interest and in the end had to stop the auction as I felt the bids were just getting too high. I could easily have sold it for £1k but in the end let it go for £650 to a farmer who planned to use it mainly on private roads & tracks. These old diesel load loggers seem to have a following and as you say it’s good for them to find a home rather than being scrapped!
Matts mastered the presenting skills! Given he can make really boring diesel cars interesting, he’s got skills 😉 saving old cars one car at a time, he’s either mad or on a mission in life let’s face it. 😂🤣 another good video Matt always entertaining 👏never miss an upload of yours. Watched the back catalogue now too 😉😂
The sponge inside the arch is why soo many cars of that generation rust around the arches including my 2005 polo, 2003 Ibiza, 2004 Ibiza and my 2004 bora
That’s a lot of car for the money shows what generally maintaining a car can do. One of the biggest things I detest is people who drive around people like 29 in a 30 isn’t fast enough for them. It comes a very close second to the learner delivery mopeds but that’s a whole other level of rant. Brilliant video Matt as always x
Can't miss a single upload. There's something oddly statisfying about these ordinary cars (hopefully) being brought back to life
Thanks!

Those era of VWs PD engines, specifically the PD130 is arguably amongst the best diesel engines ever made
I agree
They were easily remapped to 170 bhp. Very over engineered

Nice to see a B5 saved from the scrapyard. I've always liked the B5 Passats; they were from an era where the Passat was still based on the Audi A4 platform, rather than the more boring MQB platform.
As always great video Matt!

Exactly right
The stuff that comes out of the tail end is the bit that’s bad for the planet isn’t it? Makes sense to keep that on the road for as long as possible then.
@@juicypea8392 yes of course they are polluting but that isn’t the full story. The most carbon-heavy part is the manufacture and EV’s are more polluting than an ordinary ICE car.
Lower short term carbon than buying a new EV for sure!
Lapis blue was a great colour
I was in a similar situation about 15 years ago with mk3 Mondeo. My wife lost her job (and her company car) so we bought the Mondeo for £900, ran it for 3 years and spent about £600 on maintenance over that time. It was a bit scabby, but utterly reliable, we called it The Dog's Taxi as it carted the stinking hound about and did many tip runs too. It was very liberating to have a car that you didn't care too much about the bodywork, every panel had something wrong, so the odd dink in Tesco's car park wasn't the end of the world.
I used to own a 2.5 diesel TDI all red 4x4. What a beast 🔥
That’s a rare beast
My 2001 Passat TDI 130 has just rolled past 300k miles and still going strong.
Excellent! 300k is my next milestone. On 268,000 miles at the moment.
@@itchyscratch3829 you win.
Mine has 146k😁
Highly regarded as one of the best engines VW did, the 1.9pd tdi engine with 130bhp
As I remarked weeks ago every time Matt sees these cars he says it needs a good clean and a set of number plates. If that was only true with every car.
Don't forget a good "Buff"...
I would like to see more of these videos Matt. Love it when a real banger gets a new lease of life rather than going to the scrapper!
Oh wow! Thank you. I’m in fine company then
Way above Matt.
Lupo
Polo
Golf
Passat
Phaeton
Touareg
T4 / T5
All of them well made, reliable and long lasting.
I particularly like the body bag / duct tape combo in the back of this one 😅
I agree. The diesel engines were very good
That pd engine is legendary. Theres no way the modern VW diesel would last that long
You'll get another 100,000 miles out of this.
Love an A4 B5! I have the B6 A4 estate, 2004, with AVB 1.9 pd tdi found in early B5 Passats, currently great at 268,000 miles.
The B6 is pretty much a B5 with a very slightly different front suspension and an independent rear suspension on all models, where as B5s only had it on the quattros. (or 4wd in Passat :P)
My kind of car. Cheap and well used... Always good to see an old car kept on the road, far too good to scrap.
Thanks! I hope so
We had a series of 5-cylinder Passats from 1983 to 1995.
Great video Matt, as a Passat b5.5 owner myself it's great to see another one saved as many have said, this generation of VW are awesome 😁
Thanks for sharing!
@@cindybetten7573 depends how much the DSG will cost. I doubt it's cheap.
@@cindybetten7573spend.... The newer cars are more trouble
Made my day. Cracking content - funny, realistic and well informed. Thank you Sir and more please!!!
Thanks, will do!
100% agree with you. A good working old car is far better for the environment
Well done Matt, I drive an old Avensis and keep it serviced and repaired - your adage of looking after it works well. You actually made money too ;)
Thanks 👍
The previous owner was Vicky Pollard, the number says yes but.
Underrated comment😊
Shut uuurrrppp!
Things you are happy about; someone bought 4 shit tyres at the same time 😂
Don’t ever change mate.
😂 you have to be grateful for the little things otherwise this job would depress me
The tyres are GT radials - not too bad
The 3 spoke steering wheel on the sport version was something.
The registration plate on it is pretty funny in Swedish. "BYT" means Change or Switch. 😅
You forgot to add the cost of the broken GoPro.
Yep that got to be worth more than £350
His views on this video will more than pay for the GoPro. Maybe x 10.
Imagine this with the mudguards fixed, some parts sprayed, a polish, and a nice set of wheels and lowering springs. Cool wagon for around 2k total. These are very well built cars. Keep up the great content. 🍻
Another great video. If you ever write your autobiography you’ll have to call it Matt on Matt!
😂
Hello Matt I enjoy your videos and I want to say that you improved your channels format by giving us updates on your purchased car. I thought previous format of your videos were boring because we only saw the car and history check and drive and thats it. But now you show ending results. My advice to you is if you have time you can add some clips of the car while getting washed or painted or deep cleaned etc. Cheers mate.
Thanks. I try to do it in one complete video - start to finish
Those 'champiro' tyres are GT radials which I've had very good experience. They are top end China, which is probably mid range Europe
Yes I've got a set on my van very pleased with them in all weather mid range not budget
The Repair Shop meets Top Gear. Always satisfying to see these cars given another chance.
Sat with cup of tea in hand avidly watching, but spat it out at the line " I think thats a Minstrel, ...i hope thats a Minstrel " 😂😂😂😂😂

Unfortunately her Jazz will run forever too 🤣
Those Passats with the PD turbos are unbeatable and so reliable if theyre maintained!
Great buy and Video Matt and great little profit! :D

Well done.
looks just like the b5 2.0 petrol highline my dad used to have years ago! top tip- watchout for rust under the wings and on the boot release
1:41 my dads was coming to this stage, wasn't as bad as that though
This is the sort of car you can just get in and drive without having to worry about someone hitting it or pinching the cat . Well worth saving and if the new owner gets even a year out of it he's had a good deal
The timing belt needed to be done, but if it fails the new owner would just scrap it, as it was only £750.
Matts joy as he climbs aboard - just what you need in the start of summer - heated leather seats!
Arch liners trap road dirt... particularly nearside
@@adamanthony7465 Yep, that would have made sense but my bad one was the off-side. I think VW later removed the bit of sponge packer between the wing and liner, which retained water and hence accelerated rusting.
Really wonderful. I’m a soppy git and reminiscing about a similar Passat I ran in the early noughties for 90k miles. Loved that car 👌
This is the generation of passats that made me love them
yes since then the passat had no longer the same longitudinal engines as the A6 or A4 from Audi, since then passat was the same as some sh*tty skoda with a transverse engine
They’d probably put a 1ltr 3 cylinder turbo in it now
2.0tdi common rail but with all the complex emissions gubbins. Dpf, EGR, ad blue etc.. Etc....
@@paultasker7788 that’s where they went wrong
@@paultasker7788 the 1.9 was the best engine

Few weeks ago i just sold my VW Polo from 2001 , 1.4 TDI with 162k on a clock for 1500£
Great stuff as always, like you, I used to hate scrapping cars when I was trading!
The foam block that causes all the corrosion issues on the Passat and Golf was only there to damp down panel drumming, the replacement wings that VW installed under corrosion warranty didn't have them. Anyway, loved the outcome of this car, put a couple of used wings on in colour it will be good for a few more years

The red ‘I’ doesn’t necessarily mean its the higher horsepower model, ive known 130bhp models with the white ‘I’ also.
130 is the higher brake horse power on these although I think there was a 150 later on? Both those two significantly more powerful than the base ones were 90/110bhp.
I had the 130 bhp and that had the red ‘I’
Actually the following generation were much more problematic
Do you know what killed it in the end?
@@itchyscratch3829 I had 2 different mechanics check it over and from what i can remember was both said the bottom end had gone, i was driving down the motor way at the time when out of nowhere it suddenly lost power and rolled to a stop on the hard shoulder, waited 5 hours before the AA finally towed it away!

Got one with 205,000 miles on, paid 900 quid for it 4 years ago. Best car I’ve ever bought.
£750 quid for a car that could last another 3 years. I was in the trade and prices
now are dirt cheap.
Ironocally that GoPro probably cost about the same if not more than the car!
