2022 Conference: Session 5 - Politics, Organizing, & Civic Engagement

The 2022 Conference, “Pass the Mic: Amplifying Youth Voice & Agency” (#YouthAct22), started from the premise that, as a society, we all do better when youth have opportunities to actively engage and have a say in the systems around them. Throughout the conference, we heard from young people, youth workers, educators, researchers, and policy makers about both constraints in and efforts to amplify youth voice and agency across a variety of domains, including health and well-being, education, juvenile justice and social systems, and politics, organizing, and civic life.
Young people under 18 are disenfranchised within the formal political system. Yet the policies made and issues tackled by elected leaders impact their daily lives. This panel will highlight the spaces and places where young people’s voice and agency are amplified in civic life. Panelists will discuss research, policy, and practice initiatives that invite youth to become politically aware and heighten their engagement with political processes for the purposes of social change and eradicating injustice.
