Apparently, in Star Trek Picard, B4 is shown to not be a replacement for Data - Data's personality never established itself, and B4 never managed to grow beyond the whistle at the end of this film. Instead, they brought Data back in Series 3 in a whole other way. Most of Star Trek Picard is Picard getting upset about how Data died and was found to be irreplaceable. Which retroactively "fixes" the ending with B4 that we get here. Obviously, though, their intention was to set up 3-4 different paths they could take for the next film (depending on which cast members they could get back) - Riker as Captain of the Titan (with no Picard or Data), Picard and B4 in a "Search for Data" film, something with some of the DS9 & Voyager crew mixed with TNG remnants, or the time travel thing they ended up going with (which picks up the Romulan story from this film).
Filming Nemesis was also a nightmare for Tom Hardy because according to him he was deep into hard drugs at the time. He would smoke crack on his breaks from filming. I think his career and fortunes wouldn't have improved until he finally got help for his drug dependency and alcoholism. Thankfully he did and became the global superstar we all now know.
Gonna disagree on Nathan's take that Tolkien only has an archetypical hero type in the shape of big men doing big things like Aragorn ... That take completely ignores the main heroes of the books: the hobbits. Even the smallest thing can change the course of the future. That's one of the key plot points, I thought. The hobbits have no big kingdoms and yet save Middle Earth.
Nemesis was the first Trek film that I saw in the cinema. Although I was a huge fan of Voyager, I had not watched any of the other TV series at that point. I was aware of who all the TNG characters were, but not much beyond that. I think not having seen TNG worked out in the film's favour for me, because I actually enjoyed Nemesis when I first saw it. A few years later, I ended up watching all the other TV series, including TNG, and when I came back to this film, I did not like it at all because I realised how badly it portrayed the characters, TNG, and Star Trek as a whole. I definitely agree with Dave at 7:00 that Nemesis was not really aimed at Star Trek fans.
Dave, how dare you, be passionate about something! All kidding aside, critiqueing something on the basis of a prevous existing body of work is fair in my eyes, as long one is still able to enjoy the thing. Its all about live and let live. If it morphis into an agressiv discussion or becomes "personal", it is not ok. Toxic fandom is not the same as critiqueing something. Imho
Detroit: Become Human might be a good game to compare to Nemesis. It doesn't deal with clones, but there's a lot of talk about individuality and even a little nature vs nurture in there
Well done on the re-up, Dave.
