The Late Sir Christopher Lee had the best take on this issue: "If the books had been filmed as written, the trilogy would have been 30 hours long and completely unwatchable."
One of the funniest Access moments was Rob/Robert S. Pearson at the beginning of the Christmas maze last year, imitating the scene where Gandalf becomes Galdalf the white. Gasping for air - "I've been sent back, until my task is done" Thanks so much for this podcast guys, its alot of fun
Before I forget it, when you mention Tolkien liking trees. When he was in his twilight years, he said to a friend (who I think was his editor or a PA) that he wanted to go for a walk. He wandered through the village stopping and putting his hand on different trees for moments at a time talking to them. When his friend asked what he was doing, he said he was saying goodbye to them.
Loved listening to this Pod on Christmas Eve while doing some Prep for the big day. Super insightful and great fun as always. Thanks again Dave, Rob & Nath.
That scene of Gandalf and the Balrog falling into the huge subterranean lake gave me chills when I first saw it, and it still does to this day! Such an amazing shot.
I saw this movie in the theater with my Dad and cousin when I was a young kid. The Uruk Hai were so scary, and it was awesome seeing Legolas slide down the stairs. Anyway, Merry Christmas Everyone.
I lived in Auckland for 5 years…there’s plenty to do in NZ! Also, it’s testament to how beautiful New Zealand is, that so many of the movies locations are real places around the country.
Regarding wheels, I always took it not as road wheels, but the wheels of steam type Engines as they transfer power to a factory Tolkien was an enthusiastic driver, but came to view pollution as a bad thing, and stopped driving Why yes, I do own all the other explanatory books I am surprised that a outdoorsman like Rob is unfamiliar with finding tracks and indentations where bodies have lain in the ground
Happy Festives etc - just popped in to say, there is a wee bit of Alien 3 trivia from 2 members of the Withnail and I cast regarding the Alien3 shoot that might be of interest ifyou haven't seen it (about 15.40 ish on the vid) th-cam.com/video/7zO3Ep5rJik/w-d-xo.html
Oh, and if you haven't already done so - I would recommend watching the movie, Beowulf & Grendel with Gerard Butler. It's a good film in its own right BUT the making of movie, Wrath Of Gods, is absolutely fantastic. It's all about the perils and the pitfalls of doing proper, physical movie making with practical sets and such. It's a fascinating look at what they went through.
As someone who has never read the books, there was an awful lot of book talk in this, a bit more than I expected, but still I guess I learned a lot I didn't know before.
I always found most people to say ROTK is their favourite, mine and fewer people (again just in my experience) say Fellowship. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who’s said Two Towers is their favourite. But all good!
In my experience almost everyone favours fellowship (which, of the three books/films, has the most straightforward and easiest narrative to adapt, being an episodic adventure with a clear protagonist). The plot complexity ramps up across the next two novels/films and the timeline becomes far trickier leaving more room for lulls/confusion.
I thought it was generally agreed that Fellowship is the best film, Two Towers has the best battle scene, and Return of the King makes you cry the most
The thing with the Forbidden Pool is that the waterfall that enters into the pool is obscuring the entrance to the hideout for those rangers from Gondor. So if a stranger enters that pool they will most likely become aware of the cave behind the waterfall. And this is a secret that they want to keep for their own safety. That is the reason behind the idea that it is death to enter that pool of water. And this is explained in the book. I agree that it is a shame that they dumbed down Faramir’s character. But I understand why they did it. If you listen to the director’s commentary for this movie, I think they explain that decision very well. I would say that I am more bothered by how they didn’t explain Denathor’s character in the final movie. He is made to look like the worst father in the world and a terrible leader without any understanding of why he behaves the way he does. I think they could have fixed that with a couple of lines of dialogue.
Fellowship is the best lads, youll realise it eventually. As you go through life you go through yhe rotk being best then ttt then when you are wise you realise the fellowship is the one that is perfect.
I’ve been watching the trilogy for 20 years. All three stand shoulder to shoulder if we’re being honest. But Two Towers is unequivocally the best one. Has the best battle scene in film history. It introduces Gollum and the ents. Merry and Pippin get their redemption arc with the sacking of Isengard. And Gandalf the White having his rematch with Saruman and defeating him in the golden halls is my favorite scene in the trilogy. And it has a satisfying conclusion. Fellowship doesn’t really have an ending.
No, because Return of the King is! The Two Towers is for kids who FF'd 90% of a movie just to watch fight scenes and explosions! Usually these mouthbreathers are also into wresting!

You guys are so mean to each other 😂 Love the banter.
Can't wait for the favorite of them all, Return of Da King

A Christmas podcast is upon you, whether you would play it or not
Never understood why people like to diss Avatar. Those films are great. The first one is superb.
We tried not to be rude about Avatar 🙏 They're extraordinary technologically, but do leave me a little cold. Maybe we'll re-evaluate them on the pod.

The perils of commenting before listening 😆
I don't even need to watch this episode to say that yes, yes it is. Let's see what you guys think, though.
Yes it is
Let’s gooooooo
In my opinion it’s the best film in the trilogy but I think the Fellowship is the best one
Return of the king the best in the trilogy for me
