One thing that I always bear in mind when I am painting is that if the end result really isn't what I had hoped for and would not want it hanging on my wall, I can throw it away and start again. No big deal. If you consider the cost of a night on the town and compare it to the cost of a canvas and a bit of paint it is cheaper to enjoy yourself with an evening of painting than blowing your cash on alcohol. There is also the added bonus that you might one day sell a painting, but a night on the town disappears into the ether and you'll never get your money back. Great vid by the way, thanks.
Also, alcohol damages your liver, aggravates the rage centre and causes you to make regrettable calls while painting develops your mind, skills and way of looking at the world.

I suspect that Lena has gotten an endorsement deal with Gamblin, which is no bad thing -- they do make pretty good stuff -- but you can go cheaper on the paints. I suggest Richeson/Shiva, a very good pro-quality paint, but easy on the budget; you can get a basic set for under $36 dollars. Student paint is all right for some colors (not all). Ebay has brushes for incredibly cheap prices -- as in a buck apiece. Some are pretty funky; some are surprisingly good. You can use cheap make-up brushes as blender brushes. I've had the exact same problem with acrylic paints drying on my palette before I could even use them (even fluid retarder didn't fully help), so I bought a set of oil paints that contains everything a beginner needs. But I never dared to actually use it until last week AND I'M IN LOVE Finally I can take my time mixing the right colours, not waste tons of paint on the palette and blend smooth transitions.

Thank you Lena! I have not worked with oils for some years, your intro was a great brief and "essentials oriented" refresher for me! Keep being obsessed it helps us all.
SarahFene lol you just helped me make my decision. Im currently working on a piece and I really wanted to use oil on canvas because it just "looks" so much smoother and "easy" to blend but ima stick to acrylics. I have to move hecka fast but I'm sticking to what ik. Cost less too! Me and oils is just an accident waiting to happen😂😂😂 especially with those mediums 😩
I hear you! For acrylics I just use some sort of retarder (Golden or Liquitex brand) that slows down the drying time and I can get a really good wet on wet blend going. Then just clean up with water and brush cleaner (I often use Dawn tbh lol) no storing and calling anyone to dispose of it, no oily mess on my palette that just smears and smears. Nothing against oils, they really are BEAUTIFUL... I just haven't had good luck with them previously.
SarahFene when she said call your local trash diposal company i paused....and thought about all the time i DONT have to do that lol but i might just go for the retarder instead. For some reason that never crossed my mind! Thanks for mentioning that 👍!
Depending on the setup your apartment complex/neighbourhood has for garbage disposal you can sometimes find a big vat for paints and other chemicals in one of the garbage disposal rooms. So it doesn't have to be complicated. Worst case scenario you just have to get a large bucket with a lid that you can dump your chemicals in and then take the bucket to your local recycling station and they will know what to do with it.
I don't use paint thinner. I thin them a little with solvent free medium from Gamblin or solvent free thinner from the green for oil line from Sennelier, I use different brushes for bright and dark colors and I wipe them really well on a towel before changing color and to clean them at the end of the day I use safflower oil to take out as much paint from the brush as I can and then wash with soap and warm water. Going solvent free is a bit more expensive, but you don't inhale any toxic fumes
Just getting back into oil painting after a 30 year hiatus! This vid is so great and you have done a wonderful job. Really brought a lot back to me in a flash.Thanks.
My mother-in-law left tons of oil paint andother material. I paint in acrylic but want to try oil painting. I liked your video explainning every step in detail.
I just spent $35 (bless the holiday discounts 🙏) on 2 tiny tubes of oil paints (black and white) and small bottles of linseed oil, gamsol, and turpentine. I've no clue where or how to start. I don't know what they're used for. I just Googled oil painting materials and those 3 came up. Can you help? Do I use them all or did I just buy 3 bottles that have the same purpose?
the turpentine and gamsol are basically used for the same thing, I would suggest using the gamsol because it's a cleaner spirit and also safe. You can mix the linseed oil 50/50 with gamsol. Watch this video where I explain how to layer paintings and mix mediums: Oil Painting Basics | How To Build Layers in that video I use galkyd instead of linseed oil but you can do the same thing with linseed oil. I would suggest just using a little bit less linseed oil than I did galkyd in that video. Hope that helps!
Keep an eye out on offer up, or any resale app, I just got a whole box of un opened oils, water colors, and acrylics 12 tubes of each Art Studio brand, for $20 bucks...plus she threw in some canvases.. :)
@@danielrios2497 You don't have to use mediums ~ all you need is paint thinner to clean brushes and to thin paint if you want (I use Gamsol because it's the safest).

I like the idea of oil painting, but I think I'm much too lazy and impatient of a person for it. :) It seems like there's a lot of prep work you have to do before you can actually start painting. By the time I've prepped all my paints and solvents and things I'd probably lose that initial impulse to paint. Plus, my cat would probably Still looking forward to watching the rest of these videos, though. What are your thoughts on water soluble "oil" paints?
+GummyTumor I guess that's all a matter of personal preference. The preparation time isn't all that lengthy, the longest part of prepping for me is priming panels and waiting for them to dry. When it comes to creating the paintings i just sit down and start painting...and use the mediums as I need them. :] i find some of the "outside" work with painting to be just as inspiring, but that's just me! Never tried water soluble oils, I like using mediums with the oils because there is more variety in what you can do with the paint :]
+GummyTumor I hope it's okay, just wanted to drop in the conversation to say that I love my water mixables (though I like traditional oils even more) - just make sure that if you are considering water mixables, buy some good brands. Differences are HUGE. I used to have Idr Oil ones and they were just trash. They didn't even mix with water very well and they were so sticky and very hard to use. The texture was just horrible.. I almost gave up on the medium... but then I tried Winsor & Newton ones and they mix very nicely and feel very much like traditional oils - and are so beautiful! It seems you can even use the traditional mediums with them if you really really want to - but then they loose their water mixing capabilities and work much like traditional oils. I believe there are mediums made especially for water mixables too that should work fine.
I had no clue about needing thinning solvents to paint, I knew about using turpentine to clean brushes but I had never heard about doing the fat over lean thing. I’ve been wanting to experiment with oils for a long time this was super helpful!
this is why ive stuck with acrylic so long lol oil can be so technical and i cant use water.... which is free.lmao but thanks for making this video... i have some oil paints just sitting around collecting dust lol and i do wanna give it a go... again thanks!
I also use acrylic because I'm a fast painter and I've learned to use a spatula to push the paints into piles on the palette so it doesn't dry fast :) and I agree with using free water lol
Thank you for explaining all that. It really helped. I've seen so many videos and it was confusing and overwhelming. I appreciate the time you took to video this
I took an oil painting class once forever and a million moons ago and I do love the slow drying, but that can also be an issue because you sometimes have to wait to add another layer! For acrylics though, there is a slow drying medium ( A GODSEND), it will still dry if you don't disturb it after a while but it will make working in acrylics much easier if you like to really get in there and blend like crazy. I am trying to get back into painting and am hesitant to start..but I do recall those two things. I like both, because I am slow in decision making and I like to get images saturated and sometimes dark..but oil paints can be pricey. Premium grade acrylics are pricey but not as pricey as oils...so if you're in a price bind, try the acrylics and the slow drying medium (google away); it lets you treat the acrylics somewhat like oils ( just remember to stir them!) You can even work guache into them if you're into water colors (though I never did test to see if water affected them..)
+Lena Danya i am a bit confused, i keep mishearing what you are saying. what can't i flush down the drain? The thinner? like that gamsol thing or you are talking about something else?
Thank you for this video, I've been trying to find something like this for oils and it's actually been hard to find something this well made and informative.

I realize this wasn't the "point" of the video, but that painting you were doing with the raindrops was beautiful.
I am a newcomer to painting and to your channel. I knew you were the right fit for me by how your video was executed and when I heard Amarante playing. My heart sang ❤️🎵
Very informative video. Concise, simple and clear. Exactly what I was looking for. I was very afraid to start painting with oil paints but thanks to your video I’m going to start very soon. Thank you very much!!! :)

Is there an alternative to dispose the used thinner instead of doing all that?
Yep, pour it back into a container, and then take it to your local hazmat dump site.
Every major area has one.
You can also reuse it. If you leave it in the container/mug for like a week or so it will separate, and you can just pour the clear stuff back
I'm a college student and mum professor told us to put it in the trash 🙃🙃 we gonna die
Thank you for such a great introduction for "how to start." This was very informative and well prepared and executed.
I've had the exact same problem with acrylic paints drying on my palette before I could even use them (even fluid retarder didn't fully help), so I bought a set of oil paints that contains everything a beginner needs. But I never dared to actually use it until last week AND I'M IN LOVE
Finally I can take my time mixing the right colours, not waste tons of paint on the palette and blend smooth transitions.
😭 your tutorial videos are so eloquently explained!!! My brain is like 💡 the entire time. Thank you for all this information!!! You’re a beautiful human! Thank you for all this info!!!! 🙏
The best way to learn is to do it.... Thanks Lady.
Thanks for motivation.
I just bought oil paint and I realised i should have bought acrylic 🤦🏻♀️
You're already setting yourself up for failure before you even began, it's not as hard as you think it is! :] just mush paint around on the canvas and make something abstract to get a feel for the paint, don't worry so much about doing things right when you're just starting out
I started with acrylic and feel like I should have been using oils lol.. Feels more official.
@@LenaDanya You give excellent advice.
Omg same I just bought some expensive oil paint

I'm not even a painter, but I found this video interesting and informative. Thanks, Lena!
Thanks, I needed this. Going from using pastels and watercolors to now trying oils. I was a little stuck regarding the solvents and this really helped.
i am so scared to try oil paint because i do not know how to use it, i've bought one last year and use them seldom times because i do not have the right materials. but what you've said in the end made me feel emotional yet inspired me so much!! thank you for thiss!!
Really great video Lena! There's gonna be SO many people that this helps. When I started there was so many conflicting 'rules' of oil painting and it made me really confused. This is just what the younger generation needs. Someone explaining it that they can actually relate to! 😊👍💗
Hi,l love ❤ you, are you married Katie?
Please reply me, l love you
Linseed oil soaked rags are known for spontaneously combusting lol
her: dont eat or drink the materials
*me who has already tasted oil paints:* 😮
Why the fuck would you taste oil paint
@UCathMmE8a_L0rikyt8oBUFQ big relate bro
So...what did it taste?.
@@yungjose3369 bad.
@@Ondra_rx7 it tastes good
I Love your approach to oil painting! Don't worry about how your art looks, just enjoy the ride! Thanks hun!
Thank you for this video! I've watched numerous "how to's" concerning mediums and you broke it down so well for my small brain to comprehend.
This video is so detailed! It is very helpful, thank you so much for the detailed information & tips. I have been thinking of trying oil painting after a friend started oil painting recently, but I had no idea where to start. You really inspired me to start.
"Don't eat or drink the materials." Lmao XD Made my day, thank you for this video though, I was thinking about getting into painting (I've only done one in my life outside of grade school) and oil paint seems pretty cool, I'm going to look into other types of paint and see what suits me best. :)
Very helpful and well put together vid! I just started oil and I'll be watching this a few times to learn everything
Thank you Lena! I have not worked with oils for some years, your intro was a great brief and "essentials oriented" refresher for me! Keep being obsessed it helps us all.
Thank you for this! I’m in AP Studio art for my senior year of high school and am currently working on an oil painting.
That's alot to watch out for 😯. But I just want my paints to take longer to dry so I'll give it a try 🤗
same
SarahFene lol you just helped me make my decision.
Then just clean up with water and brush cleaner (I often use Dawn tbh lol) no storing and calling anyone to dispose of it, no oily mess on my palette that just smears and
smears.
The whole paint thinner situation freaks me out, that’s why I’m hesitant to use oil paints
@@loati94 I think they mean the disposal of the used thinner
@@cinnamonbun216 Okay, my responde would be the same
It's not as bad as you think
Thank you for giving us some knowledge about oil painting.
Just getting back into oil painting after a 30 year hiatus! This vid is so great and you have done a wonderful job. Really brought a lot back to me in a flash.Thanks.
TY, finally someone explain this stuff in simple and to the point way. I have being so confused trying to learn this.
This video is sooo well made and is very informative! I can't wait for the rest of the videos for this series! Keep up the great job!:)
Oh my god she's beautiful

My mother-in-law left tons of oil paint andother material. I paint in acrylic but want to try oil painting. I liked your video explainning every step in detail.
I love your work and watching your tutorials are a blessing because of your beauty.
You are GORGEOUS!!

Watch this video where I explain how to layer paintings and mix mediums: Oil Painting Basics | How To Build Layers
in that video I use galkyd instead of linseed oil but you can do the same thing with linseed oil. I would suggest just using a little bit less linseed oil than I did galkyd in that video. Hope that helps!

This helps so much! Thank you. I'll give it a try and see how my first oil painting comes out. Fingers crossed!
JustSaying hi I am from Kurdistan of Iraq . I bought all the colors. and stuffed I needed ( a box ) with only 35000 ID means 29 $ only
Keep an eye out on offer up, or any resale app, I just got a whole box of un opened oils, water colors, and acrylics 12 tubes of each Art Studio brand, for $20 bucks...plus she threw in some canvases.. :)
Truly impressed with your motivation. God Bless you...
By far the best oil basics video I have watched.
I took a class at the local Art School for Oil Painting, but didn't learn as much as I did from your videos. Thanks!
For beginners like me, do i really need to use mediums?? What if i didnt used a medium?
@@danielrios2497 You don't have to use mediums ~ all you need is paint thinner to clean brushes and to thin paint if you want (I use Gamsol because it's the safest).
Oil painting is way too complecated for me
I use acrylics but that shit literally dries in 0.1 seconds
you can get a slow-drying medium for acrylics :)
That's why I hate acrylics I tried them and I didn't like it
Thank you for the advice at thr end 💛 was really uplifting!
Now THAT is how a succinct informative video is done! I'm about to start oil painting, and am browsing lots of tutorial videos. But whether it's "painting" or "installing a screen door", great job Lean Danya. Thanks a ton!
I was confused about the difference between solvents and mediums. Thank you for the amazing explanation!
I can't wait for the rest of this series :D
I like the idea of oil painting, but I think I'm much too lazy and impatient of a person for it. :) It seems like there's a lot of prep work you have to do before you can actually start painting. By the time I've prepped all my paints and solvents and things I'd probably lose that initial impulse to paint. Plus, my cat would probably
Still looking forward to watching the rest of these videos, though.
Laura Heinonen that's a lot of great insight, thank you for sharing!! :]
What do you do with your rags with linseed oil on once you've thrown them into water?
❤️👍💕
I had no clue about needing thinning solvents to paint, I knew about using turpentine to clean brushes but I had never heard about doing the fat over lean thing. I’ve been wanting to experiment with oils for a long time this was super helpful!
You are a wonderful teacher!!!! IYou totally speak language I understand. I so appreciate the foundation you lay down here!!!!Thanks so much..
this is why ive stuck with acrylic so long lol oil can be so technical and i cant use water.... which is free.lmao but thanks for making this video... i have some oil paints just sitting around collecting dust lol and i do wanna give it a go... again thanks!
I also use acrylic because I'm a fast painter and I've learned to use a spatula to push the paints into piles on the palette so it doesn't dry fast :) and I agree with using free water lol
+Catalina Lopez I use acrylics and I started using a slow-dry medium and it really helps!
Instructions unclear: my paints are in the washing machine
“Oh it’s hot and wet and slick
And it’s making everyBODY sick,

Thank you for explaining all that. It really helped. I've seen so many videos and it was confusing and overwhelming. I appreciate the time you took to video this
This is by far the best tutorial I have watched with the most valuable information..for me!
THIS WAS THE BEST VIDEO FOR ME CAUSE I AM A BEGINNER
Guess what Lena , You have a new subscriber 😄
This is kinda intimidating... I'll just stick to acrylic painting
That's really good advice, thank you. I've been on the edge of trying oils for a while and this has really helped me.
"Don't eat or drink the materials!"
I don't know why, but I find this very funny😂😂😂
Such a big help! Thank You.
+Jonathan Kottwitz glad I could be of help! :]
+Lena Danya :)
+Lena Danya i am a bit confused, i keep mishearing what you are saying. what can't i flush down the drain? The thinner? like that gamsol thing or you are talking about something else?

I'd really love to use oil paints, I got some tubes in an art kit. I didn't realize Oil Paints need a diff liquid than water.
