I honestly thought you had to beat the Rocket for the item to spawn when I was a kid. It wasn't until fairly recently that I learned that it spawned from talking to the Plant Manager.
anyone else be like 7 year old me, and give your rival a name of '???' because that's how it appears when he battles you and you wanted to give the police accurate information?
I miss those times. You couldn't ask internet for help, you just hoped that you would find that kid in the playground who had beat the game for some tips. We didn't understand english at the time, so beating the game was actually an important goal. The thrill when you face the first legendary, the stakes when battling the champion... Pure nostalgia...
Yes i loved it. I still know that i didn't know how to continue after the 7th Gym because you have to go to the Radio Tower before being able to enter the 8th Gym. So i just fought wild Pokémon in the grass until someone told me
@@0condolencesYou're an idiot. When he says "we" he is referring to his friends and "kids at the playground" who are all presumably from a country that primary language is not English.
"Search the grass here for awhile - you never know what you'll run into." On my first playthrough when I was 13 years old. In this grass, I found a shiny Drowzee. My first ever shiny. I will always remember that.
Funny thing about not evolving Sunkern, as a kid I didn't know that Sunkern evolved with a sun stone, and I levelled mine up to 50 before figuring it out
The strategy guide I got for these games had a misprint in the Ice Path map: one boulder in the first big ice puzzle was one spot out of place, making it seem like there was no way through!
Often during a video there will be a moment I particularly enjoy or makes me laugh that makes me think “Ooo I better hit the Like button before I forget” and in this video... it was when you met Kurt 😄
12:35 Honestly I feel like a lot of the people who complain about gen 2 have only watched challenge runs of it, it's still plenty fun to play casually.
Furet not only learns all the same moves as sentrent, doesnt learn any move past level 48, but also learns its moves 1, 3, 5 and 7 levels above sentrent for each new move. Crazy how each level up move is +2 more compared to the pre evolution.
A character in gen 1 actually talks about that sort of thing, saying that while Pokemon get stronger upon evolving, keeping it from evolving can let it learn moves faster. The character is even debating evolving their Pokemon because of this. It is very weird that the guide claims Furret doesn't gain a new move until level 80. They are right that it can be beneficial to hold off on evolving Sentret to learn moves a bit faster, but their information is just wrong...
Oh man I had that exact guide when I got gold and my first Gameboy color for Christmas of 2000. I was 7. Man the very beginning of Pokémon is so nostalgic for me
As I recall, wherever I pre-ordered my version of Gold from, they were doing a bundle deal where it came with this particular guide. Or maybe they were just upselling the guide to people who bought the game, either way, I got this guide with my copy of the game. It was pretty helpful overall!
I never really played Gold/Silver as a kid, I started with Pearl and played Crystal some time before HGSS came out. But this video made me feel nostalgic lol
I love these videos. They just make me happy to watch and listen to. They're comforting somehow. Man, I do wish I still had a working original gen 2 game, lol. Thank you for another fun video in this series. God be with you out there, everybody. ✝️ :)
"You could always catch and raise two different Sunkern" Who has time for that, in this generation? Not only that they think I have the patience to try to win the bug catching contest two times?! Whoever wrote this guide is insane
I think you're the second person I've ever seen on the internet in over 15 years to use Celtic Guardian as a pfp. lol It is one of my favorite cards. After the Legendary Blue-Eyes White Dragon, of course~
@MLPIceberg Celtic guardian kills blue eyes! Took out 1 head of ultimate dragon, and was about to take out a second. Original art reminded me of adult link from ocarina of time (probs my fave video game ever), so became my favorite card. (Visually, not for use) (that's mystic mine) Should see my collection of Celtic Guardians
the rocket grunt you beat tells you where the machine part is. The grunt you NEED to beat to get the machine part. The machine part doesn't even spawn until after you beat that grunt and he tells you where it is in broken english
Have to say, pretty interesting to see how these other guides are. I've only been interested in the ones by Nintendo Power, and I'm surprised that you haven't gone over that one!
20:35 But Red's team does have similarities to Ash's team. Ash is the reason that Red has a Pikachu, a Snorlax, and all three Kanto Starter families. Ash and Red are not the exact same charcter, but they are multiversal counterparts. Nobody can claim the two are unrelated.
Another glaring issue in the guide that was not mentioned in this video (7:02) the page on Bugsy said "her" twice... not just the anime, but the game text from the "yo, champ in the making" guy says Bugsy is a boy 😜
I had this one this one is the reason I watch this series and this is why I have never struggled with Whitney I kept that female machop or graveler usually the latter for every run
Great vid! Except for the part where you said you considered Ledyba to be the quintessential gen 2 Bug type when Scizor and Heracross are RIGHT THERE??
I think the guide is referring to the fact that pokemon yellow kinda tailors certain fights and encounters to make it feel more like you're playing as Ash. Pikachu starter, ability to obtain all 3 starters, Surge only has a Raichu etc. Plus as a kid who didn't bother catching anything from the grass using 5 gift pokemon and a Snorlax you were forced to encounter is a realistic team for yellow version. Though it's odd how he has an Espeon in GS. Lapras fits better.
Yeah, red is absolutely a nod to the yellow protagonist, not wanting to canonize any of the Kanto starters to represent all players. agreed on Lapras being a better fit thematically (overlaps with Blastoise, though). I like the change in HGSS. Now the change I don't get is why he has a random Machamp he never used anywhere else in HGSS instead of the Alakazam.
I really hope they do another Johto remake (and improve the chikorita line) or have chikorita as a starter in a future legends game because I really like the chikorita line, but it's just not good
This isn't an "official" guide, only the Nintendo Power guides were actually developed and approved by Nintendo directly. This is just a licensed 3rd party book.
(2:23) Where does the guide get "80(!)" from?! Furret's next move after evolving at level 15 is Fury Swipes at level 18. Maybe whoever was writing that part of the guide misheard "18" as "80" when someone else was telling them what to write? (16:06) Actually, it's Dragonair for Rhydon, and it sounds like you'd get a Dragonair if you traded her a Rhydon. (19:15) When you defeat the Rocket Grunt that stole the part, I believe he actually tells you that he hid it in the water in Cerulean Gym.
I saw the Pokeball background on another channel, asked them if they had your permission for it (or otherwise) - turns out otherwise, guess goes to show that it can be associated with someone when actually is an open resource
I like how the guide is like: "You played red/blue? Yeah? So you know Kanto. Go figure the rest out by yourself. I ain't help with this."
19:16 the Rocket Grunt tells you he hid the part in the water in the gym after you beat him on the bridge.
Yup, just gotta surf around while hitting "A" everywhere. Or at least that's how I figured it out as a kid.
I honestly thought you had to beat the Rocket for the item to spawn when I was a kid. It wasn't until fairly recently that I learned that it spawned from talking to the Plant Manager.
