The reason the events are listed in the section for the town, and not organized by when you would do them is because Prima tended to make guides with the idea that you'd be flipping back and forth to reference things instead of going page by page. I don't think anybody ever expected anyone to do what you're doing. Lol. Most people use strategy guides explicitly as reference for justbthe oarts that they're struggling with, and being able to flip to a single section for the area where you're stuck is very helpful for that.
I still remember when I first got Yellow Version and the Prima strategy guide for it - I only checked for things I got stuck on or missed the first time through, but the map for Rock Tunnel was handy and I LOVED the TM and HM list at the end.
Goldenrod City or as I call it, nostalgia city. Seriously I had to make my togepi love me. Ahh memories. Also a good nickname for eevee is spelling it backwards
goldenrod city was always the place where i changed my team for some reason, aswell as where i walked with my eevee for eternity so it could love me and evolve into espeon
Silver is the canon version, in my opinion, and this isn't just because this was my first mainline game when I was 7. Thematically speaking, meeting Ho-Oh after beating Red is just poetic. Lugia is still my favorite, but I can't imagine Whirl Islands being the endgame for us when the opposite game is us climbing the most culturally significant icon in the entire Johto region to duel a very prominent figure in the region's folklore. Lugia's still important too, but for Ho-Oh to come first seems anticlimactic. Ho-Oh is the Mewtwo of GSC where Lugia is more one of the Legendary Bird/Beast trio in terms of narrative weight.
I can agree with some of these, but thats why I would say Crystal is the better version. The Plot is a lot better anf you need to catch the 3 beasts to see Ho-oh which I love.
Silver was my first Pokemon game, which I got way back when I was in kindergarten, give or take. I had quite an... interesting experience learning how to play a real video game. For a long time, I didn’t know how to get out of my house. Seriously, I didn’t recognize that the mat on the ground meant I should walk down from that spot. I thought it was a “cool big-kids game” which entirely consisted of walking downstairs to talk to Mom and then doing nothing else. When I finally made it outside, I managed to keep playing past the first rival fight. When I was asked what his name was, I didn’t know that I could choose whatever I wanted. So I chose “???” since that was what the game said during the battle. I remember when my Weedle evolved into Kakuna, and I thought I was the greatest Pokemon trainer ever. I was giddy with excitement for hours. I remember thinking that my Kakuna could conquer anything in the entire game. Later on, my Kakuna evolved into Beedrill. I loved Beedrill so much that I wanted it to come with me on my adventure. I fiddled around for a while, and eventually found the “Release” function on the PC. I thought it meant “release from its pokeball so you could travel with it”. I learned the hard way that that wasn’t at all what the game meant. I must’ve only made it past the first couple gyms. But I still remember it very fondly. What a great game.
@@ljpal18 Yea, it's not meant as a sweeper which most try to use it as unfortunately or just find it harder to use anything but brutal force to beat the game. It's a bit difficult to use at first till it gets it's more stalling moves but after that it's so good.
Just wanted to say Thank you for this series. I have Stage IV cancer and during chemo i started going through all the Pokémon games so watching this while playing is so much fun. Please keep it up!
Houndoom almost kills Fiona with Crunch? That's one naughty dog. These videos are so much fun, these old guides are always fascinating, it always makes me wonder how many people really played the game by these. This one in particular actually seems pretty solid, despite the unfair Chikorita slander
While it may seem weird that the strategy guide called it a magnet token, that is a good description as it is like a trinket that Pokemon wear, you wouldn't see a Mareep carrying a Magnet around unless they are Magnemite or Magneton.
I did a nuzlocke and my Chikorita was a beast, it murdered everything along side my Caterpie (who I evolved to Butterfree so it got confusion), everything else in my team just existed until the final gyms of both regions
@@robertlupa8273 it's tru tho, it was awesome, I was forced to lvl up my other pkmns cuz my Meganium and Butterfree were 10 lvls higher than the rest (they were the only ones fighting for most of the game)
I started in Gold with Chikorita and got all the way to Red, though I honestly can't tell what the rest of my team was. Then, when I played Gold, I chose Cyndaquil and while it was not bad starter, the game just did not feel right without Chikorita for me, so, when I played HeartGold I chose Chikorita again and the world was right again for me. Though, usually, I prefer the fire starters, but Chikorita, along with Treecko and Froakie in the water side, are exceptions to this rule ;-)
Chikorita (well Meganium) is my favorite Pokémon! When I first played Heartgold I chose Chikorita and fell in love, got it all the way to like level 80ish
I'm sick with covid and your video series (this one especially) inspired me to purchase OG silver on my 3ds and hammer away using your video as my own Nintended guide of sorts. I never beat the game as a kid (I was 7 when they came out) and it always frustrated me, especially Cianwood and Olivine gyms. When I would try to come back to them as an adult, I was horrified to discover the internal batteries in my Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions had all died and any proof of me laying down the law in Johto was lost to time. So thank you for this video series
that was a good description of Chikorita.. hands down the best starter of gen 2 if you can build a good team around it. Maganium isn't a type advantage but it's a huge stat advantage if theres a neutral typing
Man, seeing this brings up so many memories. I had a pokemon crystal guide book during my childhood, and I remember exploring the living hell out of it.. especially on the breeding moves sections, and evolving eevee to espeon with bite and psybeam. Fun memories. =)
I had no idea just how badass and majestic some of the sprites in Silver was in comparison to Gold. Like, Machamp, for example. You see EVERYTHING on the Pokemon and his pose is so menacing and makes full use of the opposing border
The reason the guide switches between Night and Nite, is because when you reboot the game in the evening, it says "NITE" under your save file. I just checked mine now because I swore I saw it say nite in the game somewhere but couldn't remember where.
Happiness was pretty strict in this generation, they need to win games to increase it, and fainting decreases it. Exp share is generally used if you want to keep the happiness low while leveling, while also feeding them bitter medicine, and fainting a lot. In later games you can increase the happiness by taking lots of steps while they are first in your party. You should make a second video for the true ending of this game to see if the strategy guide can get you all the way to red.
OMG!!!! A FELLOW CARDFIGHT VANGUARD LOVER!!!! WE ARE FEW BUT WE ARE STRONG! That ren joke made me jump since i see so few people even knowing that vanguard exist!
My first time experiencing the postgame in a nutshell: Kanto gym leaders = levels 40 - 50+ Me: Ok, bring it! Suddenly Red with an entire team of level 75+ Me: excuse me but *what the actual fuck!?*
In Mt Silver, in Gen 2, you need a Pokemon with Flash for going through the first section of the cave (and only the first. It get lighter the further you go into the cave). Since I didn't wanted to waste a slot with a useless Pokemon for my fight against Red, I used my guide (which had plans for every levels of the game) to go through the first section blind, converting every tiny pixels into cases.
I stumbled my way through Rock Tunnel, once lmao I didn't want to waste a move slot for Flash on my Pikachu, and I ONLY had a Pikachu in that file (Yellow version).
@@hanburgundy4317 On the original Game Boy, you could actually see the way, even without Flash. But with the Game Boy Color, it should have been quite a pain.

Crystal was my first ever game. I remember getting Rocky, the Onix via trade before the first gym, and smashing the 3 first gyms with him. Just gotta be careful with the Mud Slap in the first gym. I had Totodile too, anyways. After that, you get Dig in the National Park, and teach him that to smash the 4th gym. Onix sucks, way worse than Geodude/Graveler. But I used him anyways, because he looked super strong and badass. Didn't know any better. I really can't remember any of my other team members, I think I used Suicune and Shiny Gyarados too, ( so yeah, 3 water types in my team, smart move) but that still leaves 2 spots. Might filled it up with Entei and Raikou eventually, but whatever. Don't matter. To this day, I still stand by thinking it's the best game they ever made. Amazing!
Love love love this series. Please keep this up. I can tell this took a long time and a lot of dedication. Also... I must be one of the 6 Chickorita fans lol
It took me a couple minutes to realise but I recognise this guide; I had this guide! Gosh, what a trip down memory lane this turned out to be. I feel this guide was actually pretty decent, as aside from it's weird order of things, it does a good job recommending Pokémon to catch and move-sets to go with. It certainly made your team more interesting by the end of things; I always love seeing how people's Pokémon teams form over time. 14:03 - I thought this exact same thing and it is not just Morty who does this. Falkner, Bugsy and Chuck also don't use Johto Pokémon despite the options available to them.
Pokemon Gold, still my fondest childhood memory while Heart Gold improved on every aspect these old games still give me the most satisfaction from all pokemon games till today.
Me picking Chikorita in Soul Silver, dragging it through the game and screaming at everyone who says it's bad (even though I know it's true…) Don't worry Pan, I like you. :( Btw when I first played Crystal I thought my rival was a girl and called him Mary.
It's the best option against Whitney, especially in HGSS (since taking a female one won't hurt your performance as much as in Gen 2. A female one won't be affected by Miltank's Attract, but will be far less strong in Gen 2). Because he's a really decent tank, that can totally shut down any offensive threat in the game. Growl + Reflect is pretty cheap. They sadly lack Leech Seed normally, and Poison powder isn't that great (Later on, Body Slam is good to disrupt the opponent even more, and he has Light Screen) Plus, it makes the rival slightly easier, since during the Rocket mission, he'll only have Quilava. It's hardly the top choice (in HGSS at least, it's definitely Totodile), but for a knowledgeable trainer, it can be surprisingly useful) Yes, I have spent too many times thinking about this...
I chose Chicorita too, and for the first gym my only two pokemon were a bug type and grass type. Took a few tries, so did Bugsy. Weirdly, Whitney was no problem.
I also used a Chikorita, which I named Rita (yes I'm basic) and as a child I thought our rivals name was ??? And in my next play through I named him Starno. My naming sense doesn't exist
19:19 That's because Bayleef/Meganium also doesn't struggle here. It's even one of the easiest gym in the game with Meganium. Since all of its team is weak to Grass.
@@oxcare5 Really? It's one of those Pokemon that always ends up in my team without me necessarily planning too. You know, like Zubat. It's just really solid and you get it usually pretty early.
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 I've just never really played a Johto game with Ampharos in mind, it was the kind of pokemon to never really come to mind when thinking of team members. I've been planning playing SoulSilver again, but this time using Ampharos (I would use it in gen 2, but wanted to go with Crystal version due to Celebi being in the virtual console release and the Mareep line can't be found in Crystal)
Ahh yes I love the martial arts evolution line Hitmonchan, hitmonlee, hitmontop, and their baby evo: Tyrone, the hood pokemon lmao that typo is absolutely priceless
12:30 Well as it turns out, you can't get the Squirtbottle anyway, until you've gone out and made the tree shake and talked to the lady who's out there by the tree.
I think this style of video works well for games where you have a lot of choice Pokemon gives you a lot of flexibility because your team can be very diverse Some of the Final Fantasy games (e.g. FF3) lets you customize classes for your entire party, so that could work too
I've never played a final Fantasy game. The games would probably work for this type of video but I also think it works best if I know the game before making the video too
The first pokemon game I've played was pokemon silver. I choose cindaquill back then. I didn't know that it was possible to swap pokemon in party, so it was quite powerful because of that :D My friend gave this game for me on a floppy disc. I had internet back then but didn't know how to download games... He was very embarassed in front of his older brother who helped him to put the game on the disc. So he told him that a boy from his class wants it... you know, if he told him it is for a girl he would be laughing at him :D Good old days...
I was the same way except my first starter was Chikorita... it was super strong because it was always in the front of my party. When I got to the Elite Four it was about level 60. I am now a die hard Cyndaquil fan!
16:45 Fighting type can also be used against Steel type foes because a skillful martial artist can make man-made steel things bent by punching through them.

I get excited when you say "hammer away". Thank you Eric you've made my favourite phrase.
I love Chikorita and I actually think it’s hilarious how much the guide bashes on it.
Because its objectively the worst Gen 2 starter. That shouldn't stop you from loving it, but it should be obvious why guides bash it.

I actually love how this game gets you to backtrack all the time. It really gets you to get to know the world well.
The game is based on the Manga so...
Like Maicol said, gold has an entire manga dedicated to him
I liked silver coz meowth
As one of those six Chikorita fans, I can agree that starting off with Chikorita is difficult
Only a true loser would give up on their Starter. Meganium is a cool status tank.
Because its a high class Pokemon, its not meant ever attacking Pokemon.

Naughty dog, a big gaming company with crash bandicoot at the time. Not sure if you nintended it
While it may seem weird that the strategy guide called it a magnet token, that is a good description as it is like a trinket that Pokemon wear, you wouldn't see a Mareep carrying a Magnet around unless they are Magnemite or Magneton.
5:57 probably a pun because the game spells night as nite in the clock due to not having enough space in the gui to display the correct word, night
“Beating Pokemon the way most of us did as a kid- pick your charger and just use that single Pokemon to beat the entire game” lol.

Guess I’m one of the six Chikorita fans. I’ve never played Gen 2 or the remakes without Chikorita as my starter
I did a nuzlocke and my Chikorita was a beast, it murdered everything along side my Caterpie (who I evolved to Butterfree so it got confusion), everything else in my team just existed until the final gyms of both regions
@@mayaartsy9919 Liar!
jk everything is possible, so I belive you (maybe)

"Hammer away" has become an official channel meme now after the other guides then? I like it. :P
You should make a second video for the true ending of this game to see if the strategy guide can get you all the way to red.
wait...YOU CAN TURN OFF THE SECURITY CAMERAS IN THE ROCKET BASE?! ive been playing this for 20 years how did i never figure that out?!

Golden Sun games would probably work pretty well in this series, but they are longer games
My first time experiencing the postgame in a nutshell:
Kanto gym leaders = levels 40 - 50+
Me: Ok, bring it!
Suddenly Red with an entire team of level 75+
Me: excuse me but *what the actual fuck!?*
80+ on the DS versions the GB ones are 70 or so.
Yes. How pokemon games should be
"The more money you spend, the likelier you are to win."
_I mean, he's not wrong._
I love these videos. They are a great twist on the "let's play" concept
I'm glad "Hammer away" and "Lay waste" became a thing after the first video.
I have a feeling raging/rising might be a translation thing, since I've also seen it in anime when "raising heart" is pronounced "raging heart"

Amazing!
I'd love to see this in more gba games like the metroids or zelda! The early 2000's titles are beautiful for this format

Don't worry Pan, I like you. :(
Btw when I first played Crystal I thought my rival was a girl and called him Mary.
Oh god... he looks like a Mary
They sadly lack Leech Seed normally, and Poison powder isn't that great (Later on, Body Slam is good to disrupt the opponent even more, and he has Light Screen)
Plus, it makes the rival slightly easier, since during the Rocket mission, he'll only have Quilava.
It's hardly the top choice (in HGSS at least, it's definitely Totodile), but for a knowledgeable trainer, it can be surprisingly useful)
Yes, I have spent too many times thinking about this...
I chose Chicorita too, and for the first gym my only two pokemon were a bug type and grass type. Took a few tries, so did Bugsy. Weirdly, Whitney was no problem.
@@xxAryAryxx I called him ??? as well. In fact, I still do every time I play the Gen 2 games.

I think this style of video works well for games where you have a lot of choice
Pokemon gives you a lot of flexibility because your team can be very diverse
Some of the Final Fantasy games (e.g. FF3) lets you customize classes for your entire party, so that could work too
