- Is there a single team more anathemic to the principles of Moneyball than Chelsea? I don't think so, and that's why today we're bringing an analytic-heavy approach to West London.
It's not that straightforward, though. Having splurged like crazy in the last 12 months, our first job is to trim the squad. In part 1, we're asset stripping and accumulating resources to put us in the best possible position to launch a championship campaign in season 2. Unless, of course, we somehow overachieve...

METHODOLOGY
I performed 10 full detail simulations of the Top 30 leagues to create a single database to give me insight into player and team performances under the current Match Engine. Set up in real world mode, with the first transfer window disabled. Teams were able to make transfers in January, allowing us to get a sense of what the AI considers each team's areas of weakness.
All player statistics were exported for players in active leagues who played over 900 minutes, aggregated and then standardised to per 90 metrics. All player recommendedations will come from this pool.
League results were similarly exported, and averaged out to help give a high level overview of team performance, which will instruct us on the state of teams at the start of the game and provide a baseline for us to measure against. I'll be using the save file from the season that is the closest representation of a team's average performance to then drill further into specific details.
No editor files were used as part of this process, ensuring that the guide provided is applicable to the vanilla game.

As a Chelsea Fan, greatly appreciative of this video! Also nice to see that some of my own thoughts about the squad of players prior to the start of this season lined up with your assessments. I do also agree that our business was a bit reckless, hope to see you spring board us to more success in the next episode!
I wouldn't even say it's been reckless. Just disjointed. There doesn't seem to be any kind of identity, beyond "young". Be really interesting to see what happens this summer irl.

If I made a video explaining the characteristics of each position, for example. DLF: Expected Assist, Dribbling, Loss of Possession
CD: Won tackle, won header, won possession.
Another question: There are players who perform very well in their leagues, but when they are contracted, their performance is weak. Does the difference in competition in the leagues affect the player’s performance when he moves from one league to another? For example, a player who plays in the Belgian league provides an impressive performance when he moves to the Italian league, which has stronger competition. His performance deteriorates greatly. I hope you can explain to me to help me.
I will be going through the key metrics for each position in the next video. Although it will be specific to the tactic. What you expect want from a DLF is going to be different depending on how they fit into a broader set up.
With regards to performance regression. Yes, it is not unreasonable to expect that a player who performs well in one league to struggle when facing better opposition. There is always a risk. That might be because a player just isn't quite good enough (yet) for the step up. Or they might struggle to adapt initially. Or the difference in tactical system between the team they played for and their new team doesn't suit them as well. The opposite can be true, as well. A player's performance can also improve by playing alongside better players.
Genuinely remarkable! Which method were you using to liquidate the player >12m? Is it offer to club at any specific value?
Primarily using the player's agent. I will focus on the transfer status page, though. Try and avoid engaging before there is actually solid interest.

Something I'm really looking forward to. "Undervalued" is often considered to mean "cheap", but if you can sign the best player in the world for less than the top earner, then technically that would be undervalued. Obviously that's very subjective.
But I do expect that we'll be looking at a healthy mix of known and relatively unknown players, and that should be interesting to see how it pans out.

I can admit I was one that uses spreadsheets to look for transfer targets suitable for my tactic. I was so deeply rooted into them that I was finding it hard to adapt to the pizza charts in your skin. But getting the grasp of them, they are making it lot easier and faster
To be fair, FM is just a big spreadsheet. So nothing wrong with using another one to help you along your way!!

The character of Peter Brand is, technically, an amalgamation of all of Billy Beane's assistants, but mainly De Podesta (along with some added creative licence for the sake of making the film more interesting).
And yeah, Cleveland Browns, was an unfortunate choice 😂! Aston Villa were brought by the Browns owner in 2006, and as I'd be watching NFL for a few years by that point, seemed as good a reason as any to properly support a team.

My experience is that all it does is make everyone marked on the diagram sprint into the position they'd be in if the ball was in the next third up the pitch. What was the xG table like? Did you overperform like crazy?
We overperformed, for sure, but not too crazy:
+15 goals scored, but overall xG was still 14 goals higher than the next team, Liverpool (who themselves overperformed their xG).
-8 goals conceded. This was the bigger overperformance. Conceding 28 goals from 36 xGA. Liverpool (again) had the best defence and also conceded 8 fewer than expected. It's a shocker that Liverpool didn't finish 2nd!!
+8 pts. We had the highest xPts, so we were expected to win the league, and Man City overpeformed their xPts by 6. Based on xPts, we should've only won the league by 2 points, rather than 5. Brentford finished with +19 points compared to expected, but sadly slipped down to 6th by the end of the season.
And the man strikes another great content! I kinda liked that this one was divided into two parts, it went very detailed. Oh, and glad my comment on the poll appeared on the video haha

It was never intended to double dip on real-life Sporting players, but it is probably a good indicator of why they do so well with their transfer business. Players that compliment one another and fit within a well considered system.

Waited all week to find the time and a quiet space to finally watch and as expected it’s amazing once again. I was skeptical when I saw that you weren’t going to use the current squad but actually the idea to compare their IRL signings with yours was a stroke of genius.
Would it be possible to have a video in the future where you can explain a little more about how you read and extract information from your pizza charts? I know when you released the skin you went over it but I feel like I miss information that is right in front of me sometimes!
Thank you! I can't take credit for comparing them to their IRL signings, though. In earnest, it's because the squad didn't currently have players who could fulfil those roles to compare against!!
I will try on the pizza chart front, but it's difficult for me to bring more to the table than I do currently. In so much as what I do is what I explain in the videos. I look at specific metrics relevant to my expectations and see if they are good/bad, and look at what might influence them in game. That said, part 2 will be quite a theory heavy video. I'll be going through the Data Hub and league statistics to help assess the tactic's strength and weaknesses, identify key metrics for each position, and then assess our player's performances against those metrics.
I will then show how to use those metrics to search for players in game, as well as taking it to an external spreadsheet and talking about how to adjust for possession. It's going to be a long video 😂

I've been enjoying your Iconic skin with some Realistic implementations! Great vid, and great skin. I was wondering though, are there any tips for scouting using your skin without simulating seasons and getting data?
When you start a game, not really. Well apart from the traditional approach of looking at attributes (just because they're represented as a broader range, doesn't mean you can't make informed decisions from them) and scout reports.
Once you're a few months into a save, you have data that you can use. I do recommend making a save point at the end of a season, so you can look back on previous season's data.

Great video mate, excellent job. Just one question, there isn't "combined defensive actions" in player search conditions. Can you share your search filter for each position?
EXAMPLE: In the end of your video there is a search page for CB and there are conditions like tackle ratio, headers won ratio etc. Can you share your thoughts about other positions?
I do it manually, by exporting. I also don't have template filters - even when searching for the same position/role in different saves, the requirements are going to be different. Both in terms of the metrics I am looking at, and the thresholds.

I am struggling to beat the stranglehold of Juve and Inter in my SPAL save, hoping the next episode has some tasty nuggets.
I will try, but I don't know how to go into more detail, as the principles are very straightforward. What do I expect a player to do, what metrics show it, who performs better in those metrics than the incumbent in the team.
That's why the videos are structured as they are. Start with assessing the squad, so you can make an appropriate tactic. At that point you know what you expect the player to be doing on the pitch, which informs the transfer strategy.

I guess what I am wondering is that after a title winning season how will you upgrade your squad without breaking the bank. As the instinct to stick with players who have been there is usually strong.
@@silver6428 I appreciate the comment. It's one I get often, and it's a genuine question - I don't know how to go into more depth 😂!! I also recognise that there are some things that I do innately, that it's difficult to properly identify let alone breakdown into an entertaining video.
The next episode should be good for that. Both in terms of exploring how to identify where to upgrade, avoid resting on your laurels, and also understanding the importance of known commodities (sometimes it's more valuable to stick with a player you KNOW performs well in your system compared to a player who has better statistical output in a different team)

FM can be played in a lot of ways, all valid, but one thing I really like about FM is being able to find those unexpected signings that catapult success. Not necessarily obscure, but just unexpected. Like Giovanni Simeone. What an absolute stud!!

@@josephdeane9665 almost always, yes - the incumbent is the comparison point. It can be a trade off, though. Sometimes you know you're going to get someone who is worse at a particular action, but better in others. Part 2 goes into this in a LOT of detail (some might say, too much detail 😂)

@@mustermannfm one thing I have found is that the stats go away at the start of the transfer window from the previous season which is a bit annoying unless there’s a way around that.
Hey man, apologies if I’m being slow (it’s possible). I fully understand how you’ve come to get the stats for all the players but how do you get them in the game while also starting a new save? I understand you took the most ‘average’ save file but then how do you get those stats to show in game while also being back in 2023. Thanks in advance :)😊

I don't. I load up the "average" save and view the squad at the end of the season. However, for this episode, I actually used the aggregated statistical breakdown of each player and faithfully recreated the pizza charts in an external program.
I won't be sharing the Google Sheet or the individual save files. The Google Sheet is a live document that is not tidied up for the purpose of sharing and is effectively obsolete since the last patch (and soon to be next patch).
Same for the save files. Plus they come to a combined 5GB when zipped

@@xCG97 there's no reason that wouldn't be sufficient. After all it's the same amount of data you would have had at the end of the first season anyway.
I used multiple seasons to help minimise the impact of outliers. Doing videos which are ultimately team/rebuild guides, I don't want to be making recommendations for players who just happened to have a purple patch in a single save.
Now, when I play a "normal" save, I tend to not even consider making transfers in the first window or, if I do, I'll do it towards the end when there is at least some data to base it off. It might be small sample sizes, so I'll often supplement it by watching highlights of games they played in, too. By the time the next transfer window comes around there is more than sufficient data created in-game to make judgements from.
