Thank you so much Emily! I’m an experienced artist but watercolor is new to me. This awesome demonstration will help me with the painting I’m doing of my great grandson.Wish you all the best!❤
After your portrait of a toddler and this one (my husband saw my humble attempts) he has requested I continue with your fearless membership and paint our grandchildren! Thank you Emily :)
I've been painting for a year and have been wanting to paint a portrait for months. Your video helped me get through the process with confidence. I learned so much from you. Thank you, Emily! 🤩
👍👍I have to agree with the previous comment, regarding, 'how to paint a child's portrait'. I have sketched the picture of my two year old great grandson and am ready to add colour. I've been looking at many other tutorials and so many do not tell the actual colour, many just ignore this altogether. So, Thank You so very much for giving me the confidence to start adding the colour. Your example is a little younger than my boy, but I'm sure the colours will be much the same, and anyway it was how you went about the whole painting. I am especially impressed as to how you did the eyes and the mouth, but mainly the eyes. Well done, and Thank you again for this amazing tutorial. Your work is the BEST. 😄😃🌹
Hi Emily, very helpful tutorial.I like the way you voice over so we get all the details and instruction concisely (without the extra chatter) Thankyou for that😀. Did you stretch this paper beforehand if not what weight was it.?What is the white border tape called. Thanks heaps
I appreciate your comment! This is just a 140lb cold pressed 5x7" block, so due to the small size and the fact that it's on a block, no stretching is necessary. I think I just used Blick Artists Tape for the border.
Hi Emily, I have to agree with all of the previous comments :). You definitely are a great artist!! Thank you for sharing the names of the colors you used. This is a a great tutorial and I feel inspired in pairing my daughters in watercolor 😊 Thanks again!
I love love this tutorial, I've wanted to paint my granddaughter but have been scared with skin tones this will give me some great practice working up to doing her. Thank you kindly for sharing, your extremely talented and I enjoy your channel 🙏😘
👍🏻☝🏻This is without question the absolute BEST and most specific tutorial (in a perfect way!) for portraiture in watercolor I have EVER SEEN (& I have been looking for just this style for what feels like months). Thank you for clarifying some of the few looming concerns I have been carrying, regarding adding layers & other random specifics, which for some reason no one else has addressed (to my awareness)! I cannot thank you enough, nor can my future portraits😂😂!!! God bless you-You do simply incredible work, and are a truly gifted instructor!!!❤️❤️ 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I usually paint portraits in oils and I'm good at it, today I tried my first portrait in watercolours and it was a complete disaster, LOL. With the help of your video and a few others I've watched, I'll fix the portrait tomorrow. Thanks, stay cool. 😄✌
@@EmilyOlsonArt with oils you can cover your mistakes, in watercolours if you try to cover adding more paint you make it worse!! Thanks for your reply, take care.
This was a great training video. Just what I was looking for. But, is there an actual list of colors you mentioned, Emily? I've repeated the video several times and know I still didn't get the whole list. Sorry, on my part😢 4:46
Hi 👋🏻 This is so good! You expain what you are doing with water and colors! Thank you. Oh...can i ask what paper you use? I know you cotton and really good paper, but I'm getting back into watercolors after 40 years lol! ❤️🙏🏻✝️
Really great! I am working on a baby portrait commission and frozen with fear!!! Your baby is lovely. My subject has brown eyes (really dark). What colors are best for this? Thank you SO much
Hi Donna! I prefer cold pressed paper because it handles tons of wet in wet layers better than hot press. 140lb is fine, especially for smaller pieces. Larger than 9x12, however, you’ll want to either paint on a paper block (with the sides glued down) or prestretch your paper, or go with the heavier weight 300lb paper.
Hi Emily, lovely painting! I am painting a baby from a picture that is having a lot of shadow. I can not see the pupils. I would like to paint them, but don't know how to determine the right position of the pupils. The baby is looiing a bit to the richt. I can see in your painting that one pupil is more in the center and the other is not. Is there a rule how to determine their position?
Hmm, I'm sure if there is a rule for pupil placement, but if you can't see it in the reference photo, it might look most realistic if you paint the larger values and shapes that you see, rather than trying to peer too deeply into the shadows. Best of luck with your painting! ❤️
Thank you, Emily, for so many extremely helpful hints! Could you give me a ballpark guess as to what would be a fair price for a commissioned 11” x15” watercolor portrait of 2 year old girl? I did one for a friend for free, and it turned out really well, but I’m curious as to how to price something like this in the future. If there is a way to send a picture only to you of what I did I will do that if you want. Thank you.
Hi Louisa! What you charge really depends on your level of experience, size and difficulty of artwork, and ultimately-you should charge enough so you won’t feel resentful, but not so much that it’s above market rate. Pricing is a very individual thing.
Do you have any tips on painting hair on babies? I'm painting a picture of my baby brother, but I realized his hair is noticeable as it's dark,, but thin and I'm a beginner so I don't know how to go about it.
Hello, your work is very valuable. I am really a fundamentalist. Thank you. Please bring a real photo of the portrait or nature of the sea, forest, sky, mountain and teach how to mix the color for its various components to turn it into a watercolor painting. If you have a lot of training, the channel will be very welcome, in which case your effort will have an educational burden. Thank you. Please teach this type of color mix training a lot. Thank you very much for your efforts.
Better than most of the Skillshare paid watercolor portrait tutorials.
Wow, thank you so much!
This is the most useful video on painting skin tones that I have seen on here. Thank you Emily!
I am so glad you found it helpful!
Thank you! I get to paint a newborn, he’s VERY pink, I will use lots of layers, thanks for the instruction!
Thank you so much Emily! I’m an experienced artist but watercolor is new to me. This awesome demonstration will help me with the painting I’m doing of my great grandson.Wish you all the best!❤

Just lovely .. thank you! What brand/size brushes have you used here? Lovely points and paint retention
Thank you! For the broader washes I used Escoda Versatil size 8 round, and for details I used my Silver Black Velvet size 4 round. 🙂
Really great! I am working on a baby portrait commission and frozen with fear!!! Your baby is lovely. My subject has brown eyes (really dark). What colors are best for this? Thank you SO much
I tend to use my combo of burnt sienna and ultramarine for brown eyes. :)
well done i love it
Your demo is so helpful..thankyou..from pauline
You are so welcome!
Top 😘
What is your transparent orange color? Very helpful, thank you!
It’s by Winsor & Newton! 🙂
Amazing work!! But can you also comment on the difficulty level of this..can a beginner artist attempt it?
Thank you
Welcome!
Great tutorial do you recommend hot or cold press and should we use a heavier weight like 300 lb.

You briefly touched on using transparent colors vs "murky" color. Would love to see more on this for children's skin tones. Good job!
Which paper are you using? Pls say
I'm glad to see a tutorial on portraits. Something out of the ordinary from landscapes and animals. You did an awesome job.
Thank you, Maria!

What do you mean by transparent? And how do you get it?
I'm doing my first person painting of a little girl. She has very curly wavy hair. Is there a certain way you should paint her hair?
Which company's brush you use
Do you have any tips on painting hair on babies? I'm painting a picture of my baby brother, but I realized his hair is noticeable as it's dark,, but thin and I'm a beginner so I don't know how to go about it.
I would just use a very small brush and a careful feathering motion for each strand. :-)
Merci !
Thank you so much!
Mam can we use printer paper
It's not recommended. Use cotton watercolor for best results!
Which company's colour you use
Hey there! All the supplies I use are listed in the description below the video. :)
