    So here's a fun little story. One day me & my sister were talking about how Koh would be even more terrifying in live action. And after a few short minutes I bring up how crazy it would be if Wan Shi Tong was actually in Season One & how unsettling he'd feel...
    You can obviously imagine how psyched I was calling that

      Koh definetely got way scarrier by becoming a predatory spirit. And I got quite surprised when I saw Wan Shi Tong this early and meet Aang, Sokka and Katara. It makes me wonder how they will do the library episode.

    I think Wan Shi Tong's cameo was more ensuring that both him and the library can appear in a potential season two (it hasn't been confirmed yet, hence why I say "potential"). By allocating a piece of season one's budget to making a high quality cgi model for Wan Shi Tong, it gives less of a reason for execs to cut him in book 2.
    You don't make a cgi model that good for a momentary scene (once again, practically a cameo) without the intention to use it again.

    • @rafaelmatos5851
      @rafaelmatos5851 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I agree. Now that Wan Shi Tong appeared, we can be more relaxed about having the library episode. I am just curious about how they will adapt that episode. I mean... the reason why Wan Shi Tong mistrusts Aang and the others is because Zhao used the information he got on the library to kill Tui and end waterbending. But that doesn't happen in the live-action, so... what will caused Wan Shi Tong to turn against them? Could it be that he always had the rule to not use the information for war or cause harm on others? Or maybe it's something else enterily... I can't wait for season 2 to come!

    • @Lightning_Lance

      I thought it was kind of pointless from a storytelling perspective to have Wan Shi Tong here. I don't know what it adds to his appearance in season 2, and there was already so much happening in the Spirit World that it felt a little pointless to me. But if it was just to make sure they have a model for season 2 so it's not gonna get cut, then I guess that makes sense. Still a bit weird but not a big deal.

      My main issue is that it breaks up the pacing narratively speaking, this episode was all over the place. Also a lot of tension was removed from Koh the Face Stealer. He seem more generically creepy, than downright unnerving and threatening.

    • @Uhcip
      @Uhcip 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      That part is childish, as is the screenwriter wanting this kids show to be his "game of thrones". They wanted to show the Air nomad genocide, not because its horrific or necessary to show, but because its a cool action setpiece. Even the actor playing Aang is quoted in an interview saying "I think the genocide is really cool. I mean not like that, but its gonna be sick!" Somehow this version ended up more juvenile than the original in some ways.
      This episode in particular brings things from much later into season 1 and invents new stuff, but it meant all the CG budget was spent to the point where Roku gets like 1 minute of screen time and doesn't even have a dragon any more lol (well, he was a pacifist so maybe that's why they gave way more to Avatar Kyoshi). Bumi's pet gorilla-goat Flopsy is also gone in favor of having the librarian owl, the talking fox and Koh. Bringing forward all these extra elements just makes the things that were cut even more questionable. By the end of Season 1 the main characters have barely been together but they still want to depict them as close friends.

    • @jooliee
      @jooliee 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Uhcip tbh I know what you mean I think they were trying to aim for a broader audience. New people to the show haven't been dying for a ton of those moments like other fans have. I think showing the war helped interest a lot of new fans, this is coming from a new fan too. It got me to start watching the old animation. I think it's really unnecessary that peoole are mad about little things like rokus screen time. I enjoyed the show a ton and as someone who is new starting with a backstory made it a lot less confusing and got me to actually finish the episode. I completely understand what people are saying though since a lot of elements people were hoping for weren't included. But I hope that season 2 will get a bigger budget with more screen time to display a lot more little details like that. Also ive been thinking about what people have said about aangs waterbending not being used in season one and I think it made sense he didnt automatically go into the avatar state and waterbend without knowing how any of it works. I think thats one thing I preferred in the live action!

    • @jooliee
      @jooliee 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@UhcipAlso I think people are missing out on a ton of details the live action included that the animation didnt have before. They really found a way to tie in a lot of emotion with aspects of the enemies main characters have. Like for kuruk to have a history with koh and his wife made it a lot more sad and gave a reason for kuruk to have hatred for him. Not to mention how predatory they made him. Also the part they added saying the 41st division was actually zukos boatmen that he chose. It really ties in the compassion zuko has that he tries to push away and we end up understanding him more. The show definitely made zuko a lot more likable and same with sokka. Removing his sexism didn't ruin his character development in my opinion since he still has that narcissistic funny tone that sokka in the animation has. I think as a new viewer if I watched sokka constantly tear down his own sister id be furious and would think hes completely useless. I think they did add a hint of sexusm in episode 2 with suki though because he still underestimates her, possibly implying because shes a girl and in order for him to be attractive for her he'd have to be better than her. I think it made him and princess yue's love a lot sweeter too!

      They also skip Jeong Jeong so Aang doesn't try and learn much with water nor fire at all, making his journey kind of basic. The elements they brought forward like Koh the face stealer are just kinda dumbed down? He no longer has to keep expressionless as to not have his face taken and there's the laughing baboon face without the setup of showing a faceless baboon earlier so its just kind of random nonsense. I don't get a lot of the choices in the script really.@e

Once old Bumi reveals who he is, it's a pretty safe bet that he's an ally, and nothing to worry about. I kind of like the change they did with Koh. Instead of making him steal only the faces of those who express emotions, he actually becomes a predator that "feeds" on lost souls, stealing their faces, what causes them to remain lost forever, since they lose their sense of individuality. That aspect only caused him to become even creepier and scarier. And we got to see Koh steal a face for real, since we never got that in the OG show. And not just that, but we get to see that he also had history with other Avatars besides Kuruk, showing that the resentment with the Avatar transcends more than just one lifetime. IMHO, that change was actually well done, something to make the live-action its own show and stand out from the OG series.

    I saw a theory that makes future episodes even more intriguing to see, about why Katara's mom was killed rather than captured for being a supposed waterbender. SPOILERS FOR THE CARTOON: The last waterbender from the southern water tribe was Hama, who could blood bend. They got to the village, who had already been stripped of waterbenders, looking for one more - for Hama, who recently had escaped by using that power. They had orders to kill this time because of her blood-bending, not just for being benders in general. Which makes the Hama and Katara future moments even more fucked in a context, even though I don't think Katara ever put that together.

    4:18 I can see why certain people didn't like it but realistically I absolutely loved it because if I was put into position as Bumi, living throughout the 100 years and seeing your best friend who was supposed to save the world turn up out of nowhere, that's how I would react and that's how I would talk to him and show him and try to prove a point.

    • @rafaelmatos5851
      @rafaelmatos5851 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I totally agree. I mean, the OG show is meant for kids, so of course they will tune down certain aspects to make it kid friendly. But realistically it's understandable why Bumi would resent Aang. After all, Bumi lived through all the duration of the war and, after becoming king, he had to make extremely hard decisions to keep an entire city safe and reasonably well. All that can cause a severe trauma and change a person profoundly. That's a thing the live-action is doing quite well, showing the harsh reality of war: death, destruction, trauma... After all, this is meant to be as real as possible. And yet people complain about not being like the OG show.

    • @Lightning_Lance
      @Lightning_Lance 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      yeah I think they did a great job with Bumi, his motivation in this makes a lot more sense than wanting to teach Aang a lesson he already knows. Like, in the original, I almost feel like learning to think like a kid is more a lesson that would have made sense for Sokka to learn.

    • @SonicLegends
      @SonicLegends 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I don't mind it either, but in execution I think they messed up. They shouldn't have had Aang recognize it as Bumi so quickly, as it did lower the stakes from Aang for the audience (especially since Katara and Sokka as hostages are missing) as though he's in any danger after the guard saying as though he wasn't the lucky one after Iroh was being taken. What they should have done is keep the additional tests (essentially they would be the ones for Bumi to make sure that it's Aang and not just any other air nomad that somehow managed to miraculously survived) and upon the initial set of tests Bumi should have had a smile that it was old friend in realization that he is alive and wasn't killed along with the rest of the air nomads, however after some time to process it his mind could have had for his expression turn to that of anger (a display of ranging emotions in few seconds happiness -> grief-> disappointment-> anger) that after all this time his "friend" has the gall NOW to finally shows himself and that is when he conducts the final test for their fight especially for when Aang has make the choice to save the earth king as he doesn't yet know it's Bumi and he would still want to save him as this would also demonstrate the audience that Aang cares even about those he doesn't know and going into how his culture views all life as sacred even to those that would commit suicide without any care for their own well-being to get the audience to like his positive attributes. The other reason for why the animated show did the identity timing right was that it was to lessen Bumi's brutal lesson on Aang upon realizing it was his friend.

    This is probably my least favorite episode, or maybe it’s the next one. Only because I think the Spirit World didn’t have to be extended as long as it was. You end up losing a lot of character development with Katara and Sokka and for only 8 episodes, it’s just not worth it.
    Also, showing things like Katara’s mom just makes sense since the animated series waited until Season 3 to get into it. The animated series didn’t have to do that, so the live action series made sense to just throw that it in. It made sense lot of sense for stuff like that to be brought up right when she leaves the South Pole.
    Not a fan of Sokka’s dad saying those things though behind his back. His dad was always proud of him, and that’s why he was okay with leaving Sokka to look after the village.
    I was surprised that Wong She Tong showed up there. I thought that he’d show up during a flashback with Chao. He did go to the Great Library in the animated series, so I figured out that’s why he was in the show. I thought it was a weird place to put the owl since he’s such a great spiritual character.
    Also, Koh the Face Stealer is one of the characters and parts of the show where I thought this is why some things should stay animated. It’s creepy looking, but just stuff like that should be left alone.
    I won’t spoil the Fox…
