That comeback special is awesome.I think he was at his peak. “One night with you” and “Trying to get to you “ are both great in this same sit down part.
Agree, please do every song from this special because this vintage Elvis with his original band when it was all about the music before Colonel Parker led him down a road of commercializing Elvis and taking the soul out of his music. Please no 70s fat Elvis in the white jump suit live performances. by this time he was drugged out and phoning his performance in and the masses still ate it up. 1956-58 were Elvis' golden years and the special brought all of that back.
Yup. "Trying to Get to You" from the Comeback Special is a MUST. As a die-hard Elvis fan since his beginning, I always imagined (during this performance after having not performed live for 9 years!) he was reliving (in his mind's eye) many of the moments of playful fun and excitement as he and Scotty Moore (on guitar) and Bill Black (on upright bass) were "fooling around" in that little Sun Recording studio creating music that would take the world by storm. They were just youngsters with no idea they were making history. If you haven't seen the Baz Luhrmann biopic, "ELVIS", you're missing out.
Elvis wasn't King of anything but recording other people's music. He couldn't write a grocery list. No talent hack. He made it to fame on his looks and his ability to read and play sheet music with a criminal con artist for a manager driving him harder and harder until he dropped dead.
Everything from that TV special is so good! One of my favourites is “Lawdy Miss Clawdy”. You may have done some Elvis tunes in the past, but you haven’t even scratched the surface.
Same for me. I knew he was her favorite but then I watched the miniseries from the early 2000s with her which featured his songs. The next day I borrowed her greatest hits and fell in love with him all on my own!
My mom loves him too. He was such a great entertainer, one of the greatest of all time. But he is truly a good singer. I like a lot of his music as well.
I grew up in the 70s I loved hearing Elvis Presley my favorite song of his was his American trilogy and his live Hawaiian concert I watched on a VHS tape many years ago.
My oldest sister who is a huge Elvis Presley fan use to sing parts of "Little Sister" to me when I was very young. Back when we shared a bedroom together. But only the words that go: "Little sister don't you do what your big sister does"...
"Trying to get you" on 68' comeback special. Even though it was released in 1956, every girl with their sweetheart off to Vietnam was listening to that song. One of my mom's favorites of Elvis as my dad wrote her to say he was coming home on leave to marry her, she said this was the song that perfectly expressed it.
Elvis proves here he doesn't need to dance to bring down the house. Just sitting on a stool his charisma and voice are all he ever needed. Heck even the lyrics weren't important as he can just deedle e dee his way through the song. It's all about the groove. This song reminds me of some of Johnny Cash's older music. Give a listen to the song "Jackson" in which Johnny duets with his wife June. It has the same kind of groove as this song. Regarding Elvis requests, I'd love to see your review of the Elvis song "A Little Less Conversation."
This was Elvis' very first song released in 1954. It set the world in motion! This whole Special is fire! Check out Trying To Get To You from the special. And yes you need to go back and check out America Trilogy live from Aloha From Hawaii concert tv special. It's a great show too. Steamroller Blues is another fantastic sing from the Aloha Special.
This is from '68 comeback special I have this on VHS that my dad taped. I have fond memories watching it on tv with dad on Elvis' birthday when I was a kid.
This 1968 Comeback Special was the highest watched program that year.He was reintroduced after his movie career to the world. A grown man and made many top 10 hits in this era up until his death. Long live the memories of Elvis. You need to see the Elvis movie
The 68 Comeback Special is iconic and the inspiration for the MTV Unplugged series. Lawdy Miss Clawdy and Trying To Get To You, are two must hears from the 68 special!
Elvis was *SOOOOOOO* *FINE* in this leather outfit here for his 68 special. In my opinion, he was at the top of his game during this period. A fantastic entertainer and a gorgeous man! ❤🔥
Funny story about this song: I got an Elvis album for Christmas, early 70's, don't remember the exact year, but, this song was on it. Since my mother was an Elvis fan, she let me play it on her stereo system. As we sat down to eat, my mother said "Oh!, I meant to make some coleslaw!" That was the exact moment this song kicked in with Elvis singing "Well, that's alright lil' mama!" We all had a good laugh and to this day, if something happens someone will say "That's alright, Mama!" One aspect of Elvis you still haven't touch is his gospel. He won Grammy's for those. One of my favorites: How Great Thou Art. I would love to hear other RSR family tell their favorites.
In my opinion, Elvis was the best looking man who ever lived!!! Can you tell how much I love him?? I have a chest full of Elvis memorabilia. I need to get in there & send you guys some stuff. The last time Elvis had come to Charlotte, N.C. for a concert, I have a picture of him getting off the plane. I paid $500 for that picture the day he died. Sorry guys, I tend to talk when it comes to Elvis! I'll shut up now. 😂❤
This whole sit-down segment in the round with his old original band from the '50s and 60s is pure gold. Everything. It's like a front porch jam and Elvis had just gotten out of his long-running movie contract with his asshole manager and this was his first return to being in front of people and it's just magic. Like on heartbreak hotel, he'll stop the song in the middle and it's all just so cool and fascinating and fun.
You can read the full story about Kline, but basically Scotty Moore and Bill Black were country musicians. The three were fooling around in the Sun Records studio and started playing this, a blues by Arthur Crudup, when Sam Phillips ran in and shouted “That’s it!”
I was a young teen. I had my face up into the 20 inch tv. Couldn't play it loud because my daddy had to get up @ 0430 to go to work in the coal mines. I've loved Elvis as far back as I can remember.
That's Alright! Toes a tappin'...big smile! My Mom loved Elvis movies. We would watch any that came on TV...back in the day before cable it was always a nice surprise.
Love your Elvis reactions. Elvis liked to sing ballads in his later years where he developed his voice to lower registers as well as the high notes. He always mixed in the high energy performances. Try poke salad Annie and Patch it up in Vegas. RIP Elvis. “I will always love you”
That song was the moment R&B hatched R&R, & Elvis was the proud papa. Now I suppose they call it 'Rockabilly'. Whatever you call it, it is pure gold. Paul McCartney was a huge Elvis fan. I'm trying to remember where I read that this was the first Rock & Roll song he learned to play. I know he said he practiced singing it like Elvis. Pulled it off, too. There's a YT video (just the music, actually)of him covering this song on an album called 'Good Rockin' Tonight'. It's awesome.Tom Petty's on the album as well, covering Elvis' version of 'Blue Moon Of Kentucky'. You ought to find that one & react to it. All hail the King.
Yes. I watched this special TV appearance. FYI: This was the first song he ever recorded. Hence the reference "The first time we did it we only had a drum and 2 guitar".
Elvis Comeback Special 1968 with him on this little stage with audience sitting right with him is basically the 1st Unplugged that would come in the 1990's with MTV Unplugged
You guys should review "Elvis: That's The Way It is" from 1970 and "Elvis On Your" from 1972. I promise you'll be blown away by his live performances in these!! Being 53 and a long time Elvis fan, it does my heart good to see young people like yourselves give him some love. I still bust out my old guitar and belt him out upon special requests several times a year. He's my spirit animal for sure!!
Wat a showman he was but still is entertaining the masses the 68 gospel number setting on the show I say is one of the best gospel numbers I have ever had the privilege of witnessing&hearing u guys have to give it a watch&react its amazing will be adored by the majority i promise. TCB&TLC
Elvis reunited here with Scotty Moore who also played guitar on the original recording back in 1954 when a young, inexperienced Elvis walked into the studio and started singing his favorite R&B, blues, and country tunes. The recording of this song is the one that first caught the ears of the public in and around Memphis and set him on his way.
Elvis' original drummer D.J. Fontana (who joined Elvis, Scotty and Bill in late '55, I believe) is also in this clip, drumming on either a chair or a guitar case, or something.
@@russallert Right, Fontana came long a bit later and did play on this special. There were no drums on the original "That's All Right" recording or on most of the others from the historic, original Sun Sessions.

Elvis was sheer entertainment but his '68 Comeback Special blew him up rolling into a new era. He was simply the king again. Watch this entire show. It is amazing and what you get is seeing what a true talent he was.

So true, I believe it was 75% of the country watched the Special December 3, 1969. I was six and we were evacuating to the High School for Hurricane Camille. I didn’t want to go because Elvis was coming on that night. Daddy said, “We’ll, we’ll just take the TV with us. We were the only people who did, and everybody was crowding our door to watch it.. that’s the only thing I remember about that night was watching Elvis♥️
THANK YOU THANK YOU I had mentioned a couple times in the past you have to do him live because your missing whats special about Elvis is live performances and i was disappointed you did just an audios of some of his great songs. One for sure i remember was (SUSPICIOUS MINDS DO THE LIVE ONE FROM LAS VEGAS IN 1970 BY FAR THE BEST) also unfortunately there are a lot of his songs do not have a live perfomance . Glad to hear you will be going back and doing some live that you didn't in the past
The king of what? The king of exploited and overworked pop stars with crooked managers? Elvis was a victim of exploitation. Parker should have gone to prison for fraud long before Elvis died. He'd probably alive and kicking at 88 years old if he hadn't crossed paths with a con artist.
If you’re going to go back & watch him live on some of his recordings, you have to watch “Suspicious Minds Live from Vegas 1970”. You’ll see why he was called Elvis The Pelvis. A must watch.
They weren't his songs. Nothing he recorded belonged to him. All Shook Up was written by Fred Fischer, William Raskin and William J. Hill. Are You Lonesome Tonight was written by Roy Turk and Lou Handman.
I remember the day that they unannounced Elvis Presley passing. Just two months after he did his last live concert in Indianapolis Indiana at market square arena, June 26 , 1977 His music will live on forever 🎶🎶
I’ve stood on the very spot in Sun Studios in Memphis where Elvis first recorded it. Sam Philips was trying to get Elvis to sing some ballads but it wasn’t going well, during a break Elvis and the guys played this, Sam Philips hit record and a legend was born. ✌️
Elvis at his best on this TV comeback special. Wow!
That comeback special is awesome.I think he was at his peak. “One night with you” and “Trying to get to you “ are both great in this same sit down part.

Yes, we must help school these new generations of Elvis fans! Good choices.
Same here. My dad was a big fan and the appeal was lost on me.
Me too. I have added all her Elvis vinyl records to my collection of vinyl. She did look for them as she thought they had been stolen.
