When I first heard this in 1969, I cried like a baby. Mac Davis wrote this for Elvis. I was 17 and not looking forward to my eighteenth birthday. Vietnam was raging and tearing the soul and the fabric of America apart. I was brought up in the projects, and I have seen this song play out more than once. Poverty breeds a sense of hopelessness which then turns to anger. I was almost beaten to death when I was six years old by a thirteen-year-old boy. He knocked out all my teeth and kicked me in the dirt like I was less than a human being.. Ya'll we have to love one another. Thank you for a great song that needs to hit the charts again today. I did go into the army and watched Vietnam tear our nation apart, and its soul is still wounded. This is your boy in Tennessee trying to spread the love of Jesus Christ. If we all lived for him and loved one another, hatred would stop, and there would be no crime.

Because Elvis was sooo nervous about performing live, the producer said he could just go out, say hi and then leave, that would be enough! I think he knew Elvis would , once on stage, fall into his love of entertaining and thrive off the energy of the audience and his old friends, whom he persuaded to go on with Elvis, recreating their original manner of recording together.
Again such an observant reaction, you are definitely a kindred Elvis spirit now!!👌💕🕺

If you knew Elvis, this is how you'd see him at home. Playing either guitar or piano. Singing for hours sometimes. He also did it frequently with the Sweet Inspirations, his female backup singers. They would spend hours in his Vegas suite singing gospel. This after 2 shows a night. He was always working on his craft.

@@OpalAllen-j8r AND he did all that was asked of him. He went on KP duty, guard duty, and field duty just like everyone else. Any soldier that could afford it would live off base. He was offered to entertain and not have to do those things, but said he wanted to be like every other soldier and not take advantage.
Despite his fame, Elvis was always just one of the guys, Wiggison said. In fact, he inspired the other men to be better, stronger soldiers.
"When things got tough," said Wiggison, "you could be out at night, it's cold and raining and you're on guard duty, and he was out there, too. If he could do it, that made me feel like, OK, I can do this!"
"I want everyone to know," he said, "how good a person Elvis was. He was the kind of person I loved being around."
And he smiles wide when telling the story of the time he was drafted into the military with the most famous person on the planet. The years he spent with Elvis clearly had a lasting impact.
"He stuck with it," Wiggison said about Elvis. "He did his job as well as I did mine, and I appreciated that. It was great!"

This part of his 68 special was "like sitting in the front room with our favorite star" (adding the following) or better yet sitting with an old friend who had been sorely missed; lost to a place that didn't love him or respect him like we did - lost to a place called Hollywood. In 68 fans everwhere welcomed Elvis home, performing live, on stage in front of his adoring fans instead of behind a movie screen.

We relate to Elvis…he was a really talented man with great beauty who somehow managed to not realise that he was anything special.
Elvis wasn’t a king… and didn’t care for the title.
It’s so good to see people genuinely enjoying Elvis in spite of all of the rubbish which has been written about him.

When producer-director Steve Binder walked into the dressing room, Elvis told him I don't remember the songs, I forgot the lyrics, I'm can't go out there, & Binder said if you walk out, just way hello & walk off, you ARE going out. And that is how severely nervous Elvis was.
Take a look at 2 amazing stand-up center stage performances from this special:
    (1) "Blue Suede Shoes" (2:50 min.) (the fuller version) from sitting to a real fun ending at th-cam.com/video/Ak5KEbi8Nac/w-d-xo.html
    (2) "Jailhouse Rock" th-cam.com/video/87N6Qa0D7KY/w-d-xo.html (1:50 min.) -- very different than the rehearsed choreographed film version -- these performances are Elvis unleashed, doing what he freely did the best.
Together they total just 4 min. long so it's possible for you to do one then follow it w-the other. And thank you.

You mention about the intemantsey of the performance. Elvis wanted people around the stage. So many of them were brought from the seats to be around the stage.

Elvis had not performed live on stage in many years! He was so nervous the director /producer had to kind of push him to go out on stage! Lol. That's why the director set it up like a jam session you would do in a studio ...instead of a live performance. Like you noticed and pointed out.... it gives it more of an intimate setting. It enabled Elvis to relax a lot more and get into the music rather than worrying about the audience.

Thank you for reacting to this epic performance. I think Elvis music is for all generations ( just my opinion). I remember hearing a few of his musicians and back-up singers say they never knew exactly what he was going to do on stage because he might change his mind at the last minute as to his song choices. They had to follow him very closely and they all were masterful at keeping up with him. I thought all of them were amazing together. ...masters of their craft.❤ And yes....definitely yes...Elvis was beyond handsome ❤

@@nycsue You have to remember Scotty & Bill then later DJ Fontana Traveled the South from 1954-Part of 1956 - Traveling in Scotty's Car & Elvis' 1955 Pink Cadillac that Elvis wrecked and it burnt up - That happened On their way to My Hometown Texarkana, Texas / Arkansas ( Twin City ) Elvis would perform all around my area the Louisiana Hayride was only 40 minutes away from my hometown - They hit up all the small towns and Elvis would even sing from flatbed trucks - Joy Cinema Theatre Drive In's He performed in my hometown 6 times - Elvis called Scotty "Old Man" Scotty Moore said in an interview - Scotty was Elvis' First Manager Bill Black took care of selling all the merchandise on the road - He said Elvis was busy walking around because He couldn't sit still after a performance!!! After the 68 Comeback Elvis & Scotty decided to to a Europe Tour together - and Elvis was all excited about it then one day Elvis asks Scotty to come over and He told him He couldn't do the tour -- Scotty said We know what happened after that! I felt so bad for Scotty talking about that IF you ever get a chance check out Scotty Moore's Website Its Awesome

Elvis was 15 minutes late because he was so nervous he wasn't coming out..The producer's told him " just go out n say hello n if u still feel nervous then come back." So wild that a man with his level of success would actually be nervous..He was away for eight years doing movies so that's why it was called" The comeback Special." Thank u much..

Everything about this is amazing! Also this was a recording for tv. He sang each song multiple times so I feel like he was having more fun with the audience and still getting the best material for tv. Whereas a live concert performance he took more seriously for the fans

Bless his heart he never took himself seriously and loved to clown around and have fun even making fun of himself at times. He had not sung some of these songs for a decade or more and did indeed sometimes forget the lyrics largely added to him being nervous about whether his fans would still accept him after being off the stage for so long RIP ELVIS gone too soon but never forgotten
