The story has it that his song "If I Can Dream" was a tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Supposedly, he was told not to sing this song during this performance, but he did anyway and you can see his passion. This would be a good choice for your next Elvis song.

    • @Seanryan2001

Elvis was really effected by the murder of MLK in his home town of Memphis. He wanted to end the 1968 Special with a message song to reflect the times of that year and got songwriter Walter Earl Brown to write the song. Brown used MLK 1963 'I had a dream' speech to create the right song. When Elvis listened to the demo he knew THAT was the song to end the TV Special. His manager Colonel Parker didn't want Elvis to record the song for its political content but Elvis for once, overruled The Colonel.

are you trying to put them off him? most of the 70s elvis stuff was bad but, steamroller is outstandingly bad. 'never been to spain' may be worse but, it's close. i had all the 70s stuff and the only album i don't regret buying is 'that's the way it is'.

      Actually?
      You are dead wrong.
Sure some of his recordings were not up to his standard of greatness.
      But the majority were.
In fact, it's YOU who doesn't understand a great recording from a mediocre one.
For example, because you lack intelligence, you'd call "green green grass of home" a bad recording, but in reality, it's critically acclaimed.
You'd call "until it's time for you to go" a bad recording, but it's an essential classic. I give numerous examples of critically acclaimed recordings from 70. Thru 77. So it's your perspective that's the faulty one here. And since I've studied this subject longer than you've been alive, you are at an extreme disadvantage here.

    • @flickdasher1775
      @flickdasher1775 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@bradhuskers wow. you know my age and level of intelligence? are you uri geller? i said some of the 70s stuff was good but, i wouldn't include the two you mention. why?because they are covers and all elvis does with them is replace buffy's and tom's voice with his own. songs like 'kentucky rain', 'always on my mind', 'separate ways' and 'the wonder of you'' show 70s elvis at his best. 'until it's time for you to go' is a waste of elvis's talent as are 'there goes my everything' 'i'm leavin'' 'don't cry daddy' and 'my boy'. these are songs more suited to older, more limited singers than elvis. btw, an opinion can't be wrong!

This was from his 1968 TV comeback special which was a huge success and I watched as a then 18 year old. His final Song in the special if you want to listen to it was If I can Dream. He was so effected by MLK's and two months later Robert F Kennedy both assassinated that year. A song was written for him to honor MLK, you can see and hear the emotion in this song. His Manager and the producers didn't want him to do the song on TV, but he insisted which in those times was a brave thing to do.

James stayed by Elvis's casket for four hours after Elvis's service at Graceland.

Excellent reaction y'all. Gotta love me some Elvis. This song really shows off Elvis' pipes. Story on this performance. It was rom the 1968 comeback special. It was his first live performance since he got out the Army. Elvis was nervous and worried that being out for so long, he wondered how the public would react to him. Even though he was doing movies the whole time. The special was a big hit. He still had it. He closed the special with the song "If I Can Dream". Gotta do it next. Very powerful. And maybe try to hit up on some of Elvis' Gospel songs. He does a mean rendition of "Crying In The Chapel" and "Amazing Grace". P.S. Yes, Elvis was in the Army. They offered him a deferment, but Elvis refused. He did not want any special treatment.

Elvis was very raw and very much feeds on the crowd in any performance really.

I believe this is the greatest single off the cuff vocal and guitar performance by a male, we are going to see by anyone, ever. No lip synching, no auto - tune; and only 1960s technology. Not to mention, damn he was about the best man to ever live in his prime. lol

My word. I would have passed out cold. So much fun to watch. You can’t take your eyes off him. Thanks for sharing this with us. If I could Dream is sheer perfection with the white suitcase was a tribute to MLK & he never performed it again it was so special to him. He was quite shy and didn’t talk about his emotions but boy, could he ever sing it.

Love Elvis!!! His Gospel is beautiful also. Try Crying in the Chapel, How Great Thou Art, and he has so many more. All beautiful and uplifting.

Elvis really shows his vocally ability on this performance, brilliant version. Worth listening to the 1955 studio version. Elvis' voice was much higher then. A classic recording from his legendary Sun recording sessions.

The rendition of In the ghetto that after he passed his daughter Lisa Marie did her rendition and then put them together... It was beautiful...
And they also did another song together that's really awesome where nobody walks alone and she did the same thing she put her rendition and her father's rendition together...😊❤

His voice was like a fine Bordeaux wine, rich and complex with delicate shadings. His magical tone is perfect for christmas songs.
And, his chameleon voice changed multiple times in his very very short career and life
      Truly remarkable

There was a time when The Beatles met Elvis. What an epic night that must have been. Word was that The Beatles were in awe of Elvis where they were staring at him, just speechless. Elvis said, 'well if no one is going to say anything I'm going to bed'. To have the charisma to make superstars like The Beatles star-struck puts Elvis on a realm of his own. Elvis will forever be the King!
