- CNBC's Becky Quick joins 'Closing Bell Overtime' to discuss her recent interview with Charlie Munger ahead of what would have been his 100 birthday. Long-time business partner of Warren Buffett, Munger died at the age of 99.

Like Warren Buffet said, dividends are only good if the business you're investing into can't make good use of that capital. So, if you're trying to invest in businesses with actual growth, looking at dividends is a waste of time. Why are you investing into a company if they're returning capital to you because they think you can make better use if it than they can. It's not much different from bond investing. The way I see it, if you have a $1 million at some point, that'd be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between 50k - 70k in dividend income.
Stocks are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are alot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look.

Munger and Buffett have both achieved an incredible feat with Berkshire. They've turned thousands to billions, and have made a lot of people wealthy in the process. I really saw the potential of the stock market by reading Berkshire's annual letters. I recently sold my $674k apartment in the Bel Air area and I'm hoping to throw it into the stock market. I just don't want to lose everything.
Most people either do not understand the power of compound interest, or are just impatient. For the average Joe, however, I think it is just best to invest in the S&P 500, and just wait, which is reliable, albeit extremely long-- lots of years. Or just use a professional analyst and speed up wealth creation. Most people underestimate the power of the latter.
I agree with you. I started out with investing on my own, but I lost a lot of money. I was able to pull out about $200k after the 2020 crash. I invested the money using an analyst, and in seven months, I raked in almost $673,000

I personally work with “Vivian Carol Gioia” she covers things like investing, insurance, making sure retirement is well funded, going over tax benefits, ways to have a volatility buffer for investment risk. many things like that. The man lived an extraordinary life, and yes he may have not plowed the fields, but no one can throw his work ethic, self discipline, self awareness, and accomplishments into doubt.
If you die at 99 with all your marbles intact, your children and grandchildren around you, with assets that would support them for the rest of their lives, you’ve won.

Didn't Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett invent the strategy of buying/investing when the market is low and also buying/investing when the market is high? As Warren Buffet said, he has seen this happen many times in his life. Not an investor. My wife and i never earned more than a middle class salary. We plan to get retired at 58 with a stock portfolio worth $4M. We have never sold so much as one share of stock...
It really isn’t about how much you save, it’s about how you manage your money. Whether you work to earn income or invest, it still boils down to income vs expenses, so yeah you may look into financial advisors for a strategy that suits your timing....
i've been doing this same thing myself. Can't get into trouble with the IRS when I have no income and all my money is in stocks. I don't like doing the work though. Lol. So I just invest through an advisor who does the stock picking. My money grows, and I'm tax-free...

RIP Mr Charlie Munger. I have the same birth date, only 50 years later and was very much looking forward to celebrating our landmark birthday in the coming new year. I thought he was invincible and immortal somehow. Your teachings in investment and life wisdom will never fade away.
A month ago, I found his book at a library, and started reading.
Easy to read, simple sentences carrying wisdom of tremendous importance. Couldn't stop reading it.
Then I decided to write it down on a paper. Page by page, day by day...what he says on his book was like not from a normal man on Earth. I was enjoying myself, knowing him, reading and listening to him.

Not sure if this is the book mentioned but a revised/updated version of Poor Charlie’s Almanack: The Essential Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger is set to release in Kindle format in December 2023. The presale price is currently $9.99. They physical book weight is around 4 or 5 pounds so the digital version will be great for me to reread this fascinating compilation authorized by Charlie himself.
This video made me cry. Thank you for changing my (and many people like me) life for the better, Charlie -- you lived one of the best lives in the history of humanity. R.I.P.

I think he died at home and the interview in the video was with Charlie in his beautiful Pasadena back yard was just two weeks ago. I'll miss his videos.
They said he died in the hospital but they didn’t say of what. Can’t make assumptions, though when I spoke about this with someone who I know who is a doctor, he said that based on how it was described in the release it could have been a stroke. If this information is updated feel free to correct me as it’s purely speculative

Wow. I was just thinking about him today. What a straight shooter. His standards were high. Warren would have never asked for a better partner than Charlie. The man played his role very, very well.
This is my first time seeing this interview, and hindsight is 20/20, but I've been around a lot of elderly people and people on hospice, etc. Despite his age you could tell he had one foot out the door and didn't expect to see his next birthday. You could also tell he was at peace with himself.

What does it mean to invert?
@@500milliondollars inversion is a mathematical transformation you can perform on an object or scenario(other transformations include eg. rotation, enlargement, translation, transposition etc)
In music, you have, say, a major chord (which is the most harmonically stable sound to the ear) and which consists of the notes C,E,G. Inverting this chord simply means rearranging the notes into the other possible forms like C,G,E or E,G,C.
Why? Well, this give you much more unique sounds without changing the mathematical properties of the chord itself. What's more important is it opens up the possibility to transition into other chords that share some of those notes creating a smooth harmonic progression in music.
In business, the way Charlie put is that the best way for person A to sell a product to person B, is for person A to first invert and become person B, or put themselves in person B's shoes, if you will. Then ask themselves if they would buy what they are selling? It's the golden rule expressed mathematically: Do unto others as you would have the others do unto you.
Lack of inversion is the reason we now increasingly have poor quality software full of bloatware, self promotion, concealment of terms and disregard for customer's preferred settings - the kind of behavior you now see with Adobe's "cloud" which intentionally made difficult to uninstall and use offline, or Google chrome's hidden self-upgrades and Microsoft's windows virus-like background updates. It is simply because the manufacturers themselves would never use the very features they are pushing.
Same for hardware: Apple's forcing of users to buy unique chargers, Samsung's internal android battery, HP's brittle plastic laptop housings designed to fail(planned obsolescence), Nokia's androids being no longer rootable - all serve to further restrict consumer freedom and right to repair.
The psychopaths who work for these companies would never use the very garbage they're selling. They lack empathy, they lack inversion.

Great man. Learn so much; money is not everything...the man is.
That's one of the biggest regrets to me to not having a chance to attend the annual meetings of any such where Charlie was speaking. He has taught me so much through his books and speeches. He was the only reason I have learnt so much in so short period of time and then successfully launched my own fund. If a person can convey that much of wisdom even remotely then he's the real genius.
He played a role in the formation of my world view.
The great equalizer, growing old! Seems crazy to hear him say how much more energetic he was at 96! Charlie was just 4 years older then my father & still lived 20 years longer. It pains me to see us losing the real great people of his generation. The amount he accomplished in his life and how he carried himself is a testament to the greats of his time. Their seems to be so few up and coming examples going forward. Losing these guys and their life’s experiences are always a great loss in lessons in life. I still think of all the knowledge my father tried to pass to his know it all son and how right he really was!
Old age is pretty damn depressing but the way charlie went through it without losing his soul ,memories , mindset ability to talk like 50 year old is amazing i never saw anybody this sane at over 70 making business decision being calm all the senses working he was an extraordinary man

I’m a dividend investor, My wife and I have invested in the S&P500, both through my TSP with the government, and through fidelity in her 401-k. Cashed out 270k from the S&P and invested with a Financial adviser, Monica Mary Strigle. Until around 3 years ago we were 100% in the s&p after over 30 years. I’m retiring at the end of this month at 62, while my wife will retire next year at 60. We currently have 3.7 million in our tax deferred savings.
