  • Toro TimeMaster Review TimeMaster vs Honda- 30” vs 21” 2018 Review of the new Toro Time master and my personal thoughts, for “SHOULD I UPGRADE MY REGULAR HOMEOWNER MOWER, TO A TIMEMASTER, DOES IT MAKE SENSE??” Toro is a solid Mower competitor for the homeowner market. When it comes to the prosumer side of things (middle ground between homeowner and Professional), this Mower falls right in the pack. This is more of a 30" vs 21" review, as this could of been any 21" mower that you put it up against, as the main reason behind a 30" cut , is for the 30" cut.... not 21". So because I compaired it to the Honda 216vka, doesn't mean anything... Cause even a brand new Honda, at the 21" deck.... will not be a 30" mower. When it comes down to it, that is the main thing to consider, do you want a bigger or smaller cut.
    But for the Toro Timemaster Review aspect of it, I did:
    - Spec comparison
    - Turning in tight space
    - Cut Quality
    - Cut Quality in long Grass
    - Mower race (and a funky dance)
    - One handed turning
    - My feelings on the size of the yard a Timemaster fits on
    - Time savings on 4200 sqft
    Mowers compared:
    Toro TimeMaster- amzn.to/2DqKlGl
    Honda -(not exact model as the one I used was from the early 2000’s) amzn.to/2PK7aue

      I explain at 4:22 , 6:32 , 6:44 exactly why I did that.
      4th time: To answer the BIGGEST question I get about this mower: Will it fit on my yard / is it too big for my yard?
      I feel that I showed it has the same capabilities as that 21” deck.... pretty darn
      Well wouldn’t you say?

    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

    You did a good job comparing 2 very different mowers. Almost like comparing a big luxury car to a sports car in some ways. I wish there was an easy way to measure operator fatigue. TimeMaster at 140 lbs. and $1149 MSRP vs basic level Honda HRR216 at 81 lbs. and $479 MSRP. If I compare them like steak ... TimeMaster is $8.20 / lb. and HRR is $5.91 / lb. Keep your repair records straight for a long-term comparison of your TimeMaster to my Honda HRC216HXA which is 120 lbs and $1269 MSRP. My Honda commercial is 10 years old this month, runs and looks like new, still has original wheels and bearings. In fact ... everything is original except the spark plug $3, rear shields 2@ $8, rear lower scroll $8, air filter $16, extra blades $19 and a 29 cent push nut. Ten years from now we have to see if you have spent less than $75 for parts or still have either of those mowers.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Paul S ask my kid... 12 year old, he will tell you the operator fatigue aspect... lol he says he hates the TM, way to hard, much prefers the Honda! But I couldn’t disagree more, I think it’s super light as I use the personal pace system to do all the work. I can do it all one handed because I let the machine do it. When I go to turn I keep a little pressure on the system and it walks it’s self around... unfortunately, it’s all personal preference.... for everyone. Which I could give a clear answer to it.
      We counting oil? I’ll lose 😁. So far, I’ve got a new plug in it, oil and a filter... should have extra blades, don’t, but I hand sharpened mine with a file (need to check the balance).
      Honda is at my gparents... I gave it to them as theirs went out. But I have access and my kid uses it to cut their lawn every week. So that one loses the longevity field for me... Tm is over a year old now 😁
      Thank you! I appreciate the feed back!

    I have both as well. I do love Honda engines, but the Timemaster for me was a total game changer. The timemaster leaves such a beautiful cut (especially if bagging) because the amount of air flow/vacuum effect it generates. I agree the Timemaster doesn't mulch the best, but all your cut quality issues are fixed if you bag. Now if Honda made a 30"...that would be something. Good video bro!

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Greg Kohls Jr. I saw the LCN talk about different blades on his TM, I need to reach out and see what he thinks about them. I will not give up the organic matter the mulching gives in our soil.... my personal choice, neither of us are wrong at all... because you are correct if I were to bag, the clumps would be gone... question tho, do you see all the “stragglers” that are loud and proud ....with a bag? They stand out sooo much... to me, of course!

    • @gregau21
      @gregau21 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGreenerLawn not at all. I think the Timemaster was meant to bag for optimal performance. It actually gives a better cut than the Honda if you bagged both. If you are just mulching... Hard to beat a Honda 😉

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Greg Kohls Jr. 😂🤣😂😜I cant help but to feel that is a dig at mulching....
      I should of tested it with the bagger/mulch/ side discharge....
      Your very correct, they probably built it with mulching in mind... but built for bagging (what a lot of pros do, they side discharge a lot too...). I’m guessing that’s what the stock blades are geared towards!

      I have a 2018 honda hrx217 with the hexalite deck and just picked up a timemaster. The 30 inch is much easier to maneuver believe it or not. Quality of cut is superior on the toro as well. Both have sharp blades. This is true in all three modes for me.

      Smart idea on the search for the deal! They are out there! Mine rang in at $600, new in box, off a classifieds add.
      Thanks, I felt that it gave a basis for my review as a homeowner. Most homeowners would step up to this out of a traditional 21”-22” mower cut width. So I felt it gave a solid foundation of what they would gain, if they would gain and why. I’m glad you saw the value in this review, thanks for the comment John!

    Well done and comprehensive review. How do you trim along your vinyl fence without damaging it, what diameter trimmer line/technique do you use? I am concerned about damaging mine when using a weed wacker.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey cardio, thanks! So along the fences I trim aggressively at a angle down. Instead of hitting it at level, I angle it downwards at a 45 degree angle. That way I’m attacking the grass and not the fence. Two things you could look into is “fence armor” and a cement mow strip (I plan on doing a diy version one this year some time). My ego handles .95 diameter string, so that’s what I run. It’s tough and doesn’t allow for much bending of the grass blades.

    How is the self propelled when pulling backwards? I’ve got a hrr216k8vya and the bushings get gunked up constantly, then you can’t pull the mower backwards. Have you seen that with your hrr? Looks like you have to go hrc on the Honda side to get rid of the bushing system.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      briantii not... it’s propelled by YourSelf... I have heard of them stopping up, not allowing them to be pulled backwards... never have experienced it on my Honda. That is a well known issue they experience.😢

      @briantii 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGreenerLawn Yeah, I'm working on a few solutions including a zerk fitting to push fresh grease in there. Problem is it pushes the dust seal out. Up next I'm going to try needle bearings and modifying the dust seal to seal off both sides and carefully reassemble it with jb weld. Last ditch effort. I love the mower when it works but its a major design flaw and I'm very much over it. HRC is the only way to get a completely redesigned system... or a different brand. I like the blade brake clutch and looks like none of the snappers have it. I'm really skeptical of the Toro personal pace handle bar deal. A floppy handle bar just seems like it could be a pain with the hills I have. We'll see... mine is getting one last lease on life.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      briantii not super loose on the personal pace , it’s spring loaded as you would imagine, so when you lock your arms in, it goes... I get the concern tho.
      I’d be interested in seeing your finished product of those fixes... that would be cool, if you could diy a solution 💯

    • @briantii
      @briantii 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGreenerLawn Cool will do. I've got pics of the zerk fitting up on one of the forums. I just wish I'd locked in the dust seal with jb weld. I think the problem is that dust / dirt comes in from the wheel side where there really isn't a seal and goes straight into the bushing. Legit mine will turn smooth but 10 - 15 minutes of heavy dust and you can't pull it backwards easily anymore. Such a stupid and flawed design. A couple of sealed ball bearings would have workes so much better, unfortunately the design as is doesn't have room so I'm going to try needle bearings and hope I can find a way to keep the dust out.

    I prefer the Toro striper over the big lawn product. The swivel of the Toro striper is a huge help unlike the big lawn striper that doesn't move at all. My results were better as well with the Toro over big league, felt more like small league lol. I have seen them work on lawns so I guess it all depends on the type of grass & other factors. Yup, he ran a test on the difference... that blade is more tailored towards side discharge and bagging. He concluded with that blade it keeps the underside of the deck cleaner!
      Toro claims it’s a mulcher (and I do feel it’s good when kept into 1/3 rule), so that is my preference so I tested it that way.

    Good video, thanks. With there being 2 blades, on on an uneven, bumpy lawn like some of mine, will scalping occur? I live in the Southeast and it's bermuda for the most part. I have an 18 year old Honda 21" now but my yard is big enough for a 30" and I'm getting older by the day ;)

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Daunno yes, scalping can still occur, but at a lesser degree. The time masters wheels are larger, so for certain places that smaller wheels dip into, this mower would work better. Also, it works better in areas where the wider deck spans the bumps better (if that makes sense).
      BUT for general rolling bumps with high points that are too wide for the wheels to navigate, it will be the same results of scalping.
      What height to you mow your Bermuda at?

    • @pdaunno
      @pdaunno 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Greener Lawn Thanks for the info. I cut it a little longer than I want, maybe 2”, just so I can minimize scalping. I need to do some leveling one of these days ...

      Get that real low cut that looks saweet, you really have to do decent leveling.
      Connor Ward has great vids on the leveling and so does Brett’s Grascapades. LOTS OF WORK FOR REEL! But it makes a world of difference when done!
      Is it a lot of areas or just s few, if it’s a few, you could get away with a couple of bags of sand and doing a light leveling....

      Rebecca Machado When it comes to time savings.. it really is depending on the person using it. Your correct! And I am so glad I see a range... cause some days, it’s on point, others the other would come closer! So for an hour you would see 47-43 minutes vs 60.... which over a season could be 7 hours plus savings on time in the yard... but it comes down to what you like... and you get three choices... lol how lucky is that?

      Well wouldn’t you say?
      Consistency of the stripe pattern.... but normally I stop my pattern right where I pointed it out at... no one ever says anything and now I do “framing” pass and that erases that area up there anyways ..... 48” with a 30” mower ..... I got 18” to “get sideways” in!!

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      GamerGee I bet you could retro fit some larger wheels on the mower. How some mowers run like 10” or 12” wheels, I bet you could try something like that.
      Or go past the last hole on height some times gives more height. Those are the two things I can think of with out seeing the actual set up.
      What grass type are you wanting to keep up at 5”?

  • @benharrison1069
    @benharrison1069 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Jeremy, I have some suggestions and comments about your review. When comparing the speed and turnability of the two mowers I think you should have done that on grass rather than in the street because that is where you are actually going to use these mowers and that's the performance that will count to the user. Also, as far as the cut quality comparison I would question the sharpness and/or types of blades used on each mower. In your review, one mower's blade might be quite a bit different than what is on the other mower which, obviously, would make a difference in the results. When was the last time that the mowers' decks were cleaned? If they are dirty decks then that could affect the clipping circulation while in use and, therefore, the cut quality of each mower. These are just some ideas of what might have affected the mower cut quality comparison.

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, the turning doesn’t make any difference in the street vs the grass... reason I chose the street was for the tire marks and all the digging in on my grass...I did the turns in the narrow area in the grass... the street turns were to illustrate how easy they both are to drive with one hand.
      I echo a lot of people with the cut quality of the TM... I just saw it first hand for my self.... your correct though, those are huge factors for sure! Honda’s blades were brand new roughly a month before I got the TM, TM has never been sharpened since I popped the box on July 24.... so could have some very good validity!
      But different stock blades on each of the mower WAS the point I was trying to make. Honda’s stock blades mulch WAY better then the TM.
      As far as a dirty deck.... I wash it after every use, it has the quick clean port.... hook Er to a hose and away she goes!
      As always.... Very valid points! Thank you! I look forward to the next round of solid counter points, by Ben! 👍🏻

    I had the Honda HRX 217 200 cc motor. It is a great machine. I saw the Timemaster online and it caught my attention. I wanted to save mow time and still get a quality cut. I bought the new 223 cc Timemaster and now my Honda is up for sell. It literally cut my time in half. I love the personal pace system...I mow faster and more relaxed with it, couple that with the bigger deck and it's a 50% time saver for me. I can't tell the difference in the cut quality on grass...seems the same, and would say the Timemaster is better at mulching up fall leaves. I'm impressed by the power of the Timemaster and it's mulching capability. I also love how they designed the handle bars to easily adjust in one second to save space...mush easier to stow than the Honda. I really liked my Honda, but I love the Timemaster.

      @@TheGreenerLawn Yes, personal pace is the best. I'm loving the time savings, as you mention the true 17 inch cut vs. 28 inch. I'm really impressed with the mulching ability of the Timemaster. I was worried about that having the Honda with the dual blade cut and 200cc motor for mulching, but honestly and surprisingly I can't tell the difference, and actually much prefer the wider stripes the Toro leaves. I really liked my Honda, but so far I love the Toro Timemaster.

    Hi Jeremy! I have been tempted to get the TimeMaster for a couple of years now. I mow about 12K sq ft of cool season turf. At peak growth rates I can be cutting it every 2 or 3 days. Currently I use a Honda HRX21, an extremely well designed machine that has never given me a moment of trouble. However, the maximum height I can adjust to is ~ 3.5 inches. I would really prefer to cut @ 4 - 4.5 inches... The Honda cut quality is excellent as you say.
    Your video gave me pause. I have seen Allen Hanes' TimeMaster leave spurious blades of grass uncut on his videos. This is something I try hard to avoid. And the tendency to leave clumps of grass un-mulched also concerns me. You've given me some concening (and therefore valuable) things to think about. Do I want to spend $1K to get a wider inferior cut?

      Info.
      I will be redoing a few of these tests with the TM and another mower here in the near future. I am going to sharpen the blades on the TM to see if it helps... I hear from people it does. Second thing i did want to point out... the Straggler blades were nowhere as noticeable with staying in the 1/3 rule. Also, clumping wasn’t an issue if not cutting more then 1/3 and/or letting it run for longer then 1 second in long grass. Both of these were exaggerated for the audience to see... but they can repeate the results doing the same. So those possibilities are very real!
      Feel free to ask questions, I enjoy assisting!

    I just traded in my 7 month old HRX217 for a 2019 Timemaster. The Only thing the Honda has on the Toro is the plastic deck. The Toro cuts better, starts easier and the Personal Pace is miles better than Honda’s hydro. The thing that really soured me on the Honda was after less than one half season the left side of the mower handle was rusting and paint peeling around the welds from perspiration. Fortunately my Toro dealer gave me a fair price and the Hondog is gone.

    Thumbs up on the TimeMaster, I have 25 hours on mine and it is a great machine. The under deck stays very clean and I do wash it out after each use. I did install an hour meter on it. I keep the blades sharp with a Work Sharp sharpener. On my lawn, I do not get any tall miss cut blades of grass nor do I get any end of cut debris. In fact, my mulch is pretty much non existent at all other than on or near walks and driveways where I see the very fine mulch debris which is about 1/4” inch. The power or torque of the TimeMaster engine and the blade speed and sharpness have a lot to do with mulching success as well as grass dryness. I have recently mulched some nut tree leaves and frankly I could not fine any particles.... totally amazing. I have not used the TimeMaster rear bagger yet nor the side discharge but plan to do so in the Fall during leaf season. Would I buy it again? Yes. I cut 15,000 Sq Feet of lawn and it really saves time and the results are impressive as is the Personal Pace system.

      My lawn is very thick and established Zoysia. It feels like a sponge carpet. However under trees in the shade where the zoysia will not grow I have Kentucky Blue and Fescue mix. The lawn is kept about 3” after the cut in the Summer and perhaps 1/2” shorter in the Fall as it begins to go dormant. I cut about once every 5 days. I have used Malorganite for about 25 years now. Recently over the last three years I have applied Humic Acid in a granular mix by Solu-Cal.

      I have a 2010 wide area cub cadet. The lower model that year with the 10 HP Briggs. Home Depot floor model ran me around 900. I have a 22 Toro personal pace as a trim mower. I cut about an acre. The Cub has been very good. A lot of cables braking early on but they redesigned them and I don't think I've replace one in the last 5 years. The cut quality is not as good as the small Toro. I bought the bragging system for those time when the grass is growing to fast for mulching (side discharge) so I usually bag in the spring and late fall. The Briggs 10 HP has been awesome - no problems and zips through high grass that would choke the small Toro. I'm right around 200 hours. I've always been a Toro guy and wonder what I'll do when it comes time for a new one.

    I use the personal pace and they are great. I also have a Gravely 36 w a 15 hp Kawasaki n she is a solid beast. For speed and tough jobs ,I'll use the Gravely but for detailed cuts I use the Toro.
    I do have an older Canadian built MTD that mows n mulches better then a Toro but it's not as fast as the Toro . The MTD also has caster wheels n that's great but unlike the Toro ya can't raise the bars for storage.

    I’ve got the same Honda. I hate the mower. I’m 65, cut grass for spending money as a kid and worked as a greens keeper on a golf course as a young man (we used Jacobsen mowers on the golf course) and have been doing my own lawn care for my entire life. I’ve owned many mowers - mostly Craftsman because I had a Sears close to me and they had a repair shop in case there were issues. Back in the day, it was hard to beat Sears. They gave me a brand new mower once because I was having issues with my current Craftsman. When Sears went away, I splurged and bought the Honda. Anyway, I say all that to say, I’m not without experience when it comes to lawnmowers and mowing, and the Honda has been one of the worst I’ve owned. Honda’s, in an effort to reduce gas usage and reduce emissions, have a very sensitive carburetor. In all my years, I’ve never had to replace a carb on a mower. When I was a kid, we pushed an old lawn mower around the neighborhood, cut grass all day, and pushed in the utility room and forgot about it until we pulled it out and did it again. I’ve had to replace my Honda’s carb after the first year. No, the carb is not covered under the warranty, and you better turn off the gas and let it run until it dies or you’ll be paying $150 - $300 to replace a carb on a brand new mower as I did. No, I didn’t let it sit for a long period. I live in Northwest Florida and my growing season is 9 months out of the year. I really dislike the rear wheel drive on the Honda. The transmission doesn’t always disengage and you are constantly fighting it to pull it back. Once the wheels get just a little wear, they spin and you lose the “self-propelled,” aspect and it becomes just a heavy push mower. The small wheels on the Honda are not suited to anything but a perfectly level lawn. Mine is not, so the cut is very bad. A mower with larger rear wheels is more suited to an uneven lawn. A front wheel drive is disengaged by simply lifting the front wheels. That’s impossible with a rear wheel drive.

      @TheGreenerLawn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooof sorry to hear this Rich! I just know this mower I have is a 2011 model, and I was not the first owner... for my family it’s been a champ, as my 80 year old grandma has it at her house ( not used by her), to mow a 3% grade hill.
      Not discrediting your experience at all. I get not every thing is built for everyone. This is very true, it just sucks when you put 300-500 into one and then have to keep putting more into issues and repairs.. oof
      I understand the wheel issue, it’s happening to my grandmas as we speak on the hill as the wheels are worn, they have a hard time on that grade. I haven’t looked to see how much they are to fix... as my young 18 year old cousin mows it for them, and he’s you and Nimble still lol.
      I am sorry you didn’t like your experience with your mower. Thank you for sharing for others to see!

      @@TheGreenerLawn I think mine’s about 5 years old now. I guess my expectations were too high for the Honda. Every review I read, raved about it and my son and a friend of mine had one that they really liked. I thought it would be a big step up from my relatively cheap Craftsman mowers. Unfortunately, mine did not live up to my expectations either in terms of quality or performance. I will never buy another Honda nor a rear wheel drive. This was the first rear wheel drive I had ever owned, and I’m sure for most, that’s ok, but I much prefer the ease of use of a front wheel drive. Thanks for your review. I was considering the Toro but I think I’ll just find a good front wheel drive as I can’t justify the additional $600 to $700.

    Toro - how mutch horst power?

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sonniges Wetter when it comes to load on an engine (like cutting grass, a blade with resistance on grass blades), torque is what your looking for to push it through, not horse power.
      Here is Toro’s response to this:
      “With engines in walk-behind lawn mowers, we use gross torque ratings to measure the engine’s power rather than horsepower. Gross Torque is the immediate twisting force required to turn a blade at a given moment. Thus, torque is the way to measure the rotational force a machine can produce which is exactly what a walk behind mower does as it cuts grass. The gross torque for this mower is 10 ft.-lb.”

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrea Bond puts you in the middle a little there. This would boil down to:
      Q- How often do you cut?
      A- if you don’t let it get above 1/3 of the length before cutting, you will never notice a cut quality issue out of the toro. If you do mow infrequent and it gets long, the Honda will be the better choice by far. I did get two cuts in last season with a gator blade in my time master... but I have no weigh in yet. More to come this season on that.
      Q- How big is your property you will be mowing?

    No comparison with a 30 and 21. Your talking 9 in. What are you thinking?

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOTS of comparison here. Most people are stepping up from the smaller version, because they see value in the larger one... that is what this is about, does it make sense to go
      From a smaller mower on your yard to a bigger one, but if it doesn’t make sense for that they are looking for, they should stick with the smaller one at the point. ****They by no means are in the same ball park... OR platform.... NOT WHAT THIS VIDEOS ABOUT **** I would hope, people aren’t in a huge market to switch = for equal.
      It is said a few times in this video, is it worth stepping up to a larger mower, here is how to weigh it out.

    I got a quick shot of your Toro blades. These are not effective mulching blades. I changed
    out my Toro 21” stock blades for Gator blades. Huge difference. Toro should put better mulching blades on new machines. I don’t know if you can get 15” Gator blades, if they are available, get them.

    The current Timemaster has a 223 CC Briggs engine. There is not a single Honda 21 inch mower that touches the Toro TM 30 inch mower.

      Alexander Raykhert this isn’t new tech. This TimeMaster has been out for years. I don’t think Honda is worried about this market.

    seems to me this time master may be just as fast as a 36 zero turn at knocking out lawns...since it can go anywhere even narrow gates...

    • @TheGreenerLawn
      @TheGreenerLawn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      roadstar499 close, but on a zero turn you can keep constant higher speeds because you don’t have to have leg fatigue. But you could be close to correct

      Hi roadstar. I use the Timemaster and a Gravely 36" Standon Zero Turn. The 36'' is faster than the Timesmaster, but weighs 500 lbs. more and can really create some divots in wet lawns. I am constantly going back and forth between the two mowers lawns for my accounts - depending on grass conditions and whether I need to bag or not. If you can afford to buy both the Timemaster and a 36" Stand On - then do it. I also have a 52" Gravely 252 for the bigger half acre and larger lawns.

    Why can't Honda come out with a dual blade 28"-30" to compete with Timemaster?
    DR Mower and Cub Cadet are no competition for TM. We need another player in the wide area walk behind for those of us with half acre but do not want a rider, just yet!
