- First Time Use of 30” Toro TimeMaster 223 CC | Thoughts and Feelings By a first time user. I have invited Jimmy Lewis to test out the Toro Time Master 223 CC, and give his impressions of his first time use. As I expected, his thoughts and feelings of the Toro TimeMaster were extremely positive! He had been looking at several models and he knew I had the Time Master so he asked if he could try it out! Of course!! Get up here and try this 30” cut out! You can’t beat the 30” toro Timemaster cut!

Since this video had so much positive bias, I'll play devil's advocate and point out some negatives...I must say though, as someone who is beginning season 4 with the previous model that had a 190 cc but otherwise identical machine, I absolutely love the TM30.
I suspect that the new engine helps some with it's #1 negative, which is powering through thick grass or tall or moist grass mulching or even with the side chute installed, however, the best attribute of this mower (nimble but wide cut) is also the main cause of it's bogging down issue, and that is it's wide but short design, which lets it cut grass much more effectively than it can expell it. This makes it not a good mulching mower in areas in eastern U.S. Additionally, due to the small side opening area and the poor designed chute, the only two ways to save time mowing with this mower in thick or tall or damp grass are: with the side opening cover strapped up or rear bagging.
The second fault specifically with the new model is that even though Briggs built a new, larger engine with more torque, they gave it the same size fuel tank. My 190 cc model is only barely adequate with respect to run time for my half acre lot with some trimming and fence, and if that run time were reduced, all the time I'd gain mowing beyond a 21- 22 inch would be spent refueling during one mowing session.
Thirdly, the chute falls off in ditch lines, etc, and also clogs up during mowing of thick grass, and Toro did not fix this with the new model.
That's it. This is a fantastic mower. There are many complainers on the world wide web about reliability of belts and pulleys and transmissions, but these are pros trying to get away with using a homowner designed mower for commercial use. After 3 years, I've burned up only one pulley and one belt; I've made only one or two adjustments to the PP and belt tension. Except for the bogging down issue that begins around June each year and a poorly-designed side chute, it's a near perfect mower for a homeowner with a large lawn.

I know nothing about the previous mower other then people said it did have issues. So you sharing about the pulleys, is in line with a few others I’ve seen about the pulleys.
I agree with the gas tank 💯 %. I get about 10k-11k worth of grass through it and it does. I wish it had the gallon tank like the Turf Master at 1 gallon.
Never have used the side discharge. I use it for 1/3 rule mulching cuts... stay away from wet cuts.... but I know that isn’t something everyone can do!

The small fuel tank is mind boggling! Otherwise, a good mower. Have you ever bought and used the mulching blades sold separately?
💯 correct. You will get 10k sqft off one tank of gas... it need the 1 gal tank.... I picked up gator blades at the end of the season last year... I’ve gotten 6 mows in with them now, they are cutting well... but I haven’t really tested them yet.

A great machine but you can't leave off the negs though few they are. 1- The tank is way too small. 2- The starter dogs(flippers) do not stay tucked in place and make a chirping noise as they wear down. I had a belt break start of second season which is odd. These are ridiculous issues which should be fixed. 30 mins of run time is insane!

I have a 223cc Timemaster that I bought in March of 2019. I love it. But I think the gas tank is very undersized. I have a 3/4 acre yard and it doesn’t come close to cutting it with one tank of fuel. My 21” Honda would cut my entire yard on one tank of fuel....Also the Timemaster doesn’t do very well on hills. It’s a great mower though 👍
+Jay Wright your very correct about the gas tank, it’s super small. I can only do my 8k plus 3k the next cut before I have to fill it up again. I was looking at the toro turfmaster, it has a 1 gallon tank... it made it worth while! I would of thought with the rear wheel drive the hills would of been easier... huh.... good info! Glad you like it!
I would definitely need it to work on hills. My lawn is on a 15 degree slope uphill.
MatthewinGA I was under the impression, that rear wheel drives are for hills.... I don’t have one to test it on.... as the wheels don’t lift as you go up the hill... but @Jay Wright has experience with hills...👍🏻
The Greener Lawn mine is rear wheel drive too and it does fine with one hand going up the 15 degrees. I’m sure the Timemaster would be fine on 15 degrees.

I’ve had a Timemaster for a month. It starts well, mows well but is a bit heavy and hard to pull backwards. Surprised you guys spent so much time b-s ing rather than actually critiquing the machine.

I’m 6’1” and 240 lbs and I can handle it pretty easy, one handed also. My wife mows with it all the time with no issues. My 12 year old son, does struggle with it a bit... he would rather use a smaller mower, so I get it, it can be different for everyone. Your terrain could be difficult for it also. So I understand.

Hey Jeremy, I bought a TimeMaster a week ago, have used it twice. I've got TTTF in Chapel Hill, NC. I really like this mower. Up til now, I've used a Honda HRX VKA, its a solid machine with a terrific cut. However, the TimeMaster may be cutting even a little better. Maybe because of the lift? I've got the standard blades on the TM. Those are my earliest thoughts
ErleZeker I believe you are going to be in for several years of quality cuts and quicker mows! It sounds like u keep it within the 1/3 mow height rule, so I don’t foresee any issues with cut!
I think power and not extremely tall grass is giving the solid cut. I would love to hear ur thoughts as you progress! If u have questions fire them this way!

ErleZeker some say yes and some say no.... I haven’t seen any issues having it 1 year. I would say no because we vary our mowing patterns, and it’s less damaging then us walking on it... my Timemasters Big League Lawns striperman is 17 lbs.... I’m 240 lbs with a smaller print.. I’m putting roughly 120 lbs per step and it’s a lot less!
Definitely a nice mower. Wish I had one! Maybe some day.

Nothing but issues with my timemaster. I pretty much had to replace just about everything on this mower. 4 sets of pulleys, both cable drives, tranny, belts, etc... And to top it off, I only use it on my lawn once a week. These mowers are trouble ridden, just be aware of it.
I replaced my pulleys with the upgraded pulleys and caps.

Hey Jeremy... I too have a Timemaster and yes I do agree the ease of use. But..... I honestly feel the cut off the Toro just cannot compete with a Honda HRX cut. If only Toro can clone or create their own dual blade system it would #DOMINATE! 💥

Have to agree with you to a degree and this is coming from a guy who’s used the residential line and the commercial line. Personally a single blade can cut as good if the blade is kept sharp but most importantly the blade is being spun at a very high rate of speed. The higher end big zero turn mowers spin their blades with a higher RPM that is very noticeable from a dB level alone. Your neighbors will thank you though for not buying a high dB commercial zero turn but you can find just as good of a self propelled if you do a little homework. Otherwise just keep the blades sharp and choose the right blades for the job.

+888HUSKERS it can come closer, but Honda has put a better spin on this technology. I feel that the TM’s blade is more geared towards side discharge and bagging, as it’s string suits. I still rock a solid cut when I keep it in the 1/3 rule with the TM! But you are very correct!
I've looked everywhere and can't find the answer - do you know what the rpm range is for the Timemaster???

I am starting my second season with a Timemaster. Overall, I like the machine. But, this is the noisiest mower ever. The whine of the blades and the noise of the engine makes me think I am disturbing the neighbors as well as making the job harder for me. The extremely high blade speed makes me wonder how long the bearings and belts will last. These problems could be minimized if there was a throttle. Also have a Honda HRX 217HYA. Much more pleasant to operate the Honda, but MUCH more walking to mow my 15,000 sq ft lawn
