      Same, they feel like fuzzy paintings or how you'd remember what skies looked like in your dreams, and whenever I have a nostalgia trip regarding my older gaming days of playing Half Life and Counter Strike, the first and foremost thing I always remember is the skybox. Its hard to explain but the low quality of them really does give it a hazy memory/dream effect.

    6:03 Not CS-related, but I really missed when racing games used that kind of method of selling the size of the world. Games like earlier Need for Speed games like Underground 2, Most Wanted and Carbon made it feel like it has a bigger world than the recent entries despite being objectively smaller. Meanwhile, modern racing games like the recent NFS ones have bigger worlds with towering buildings but somehow feel emptier and barren, no matter how hard they try to make it lively.

    For some reason skyboxes/background art have always been of particular interest to me in games. I think it’s how they used to fire my imagination as a kid in terms of “what’s out there”
    Thanks for continuing to make videos which speak to such parts of my nerdy and sentimental psychology, Mr Kliks :)

  • @brickstonesonn9276
    @brickstonesonn9276 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I actually love how they dont move when you do. They feel so much more massive because of it, and it gives the map such an incredible atmosphere i dont feel in any other game.
    Like, in most games mountains & such are actually really small, and you really feel that they're small especially if you've seen big mountains irl before.
    But these 2d skyboxes really make these distant mountains feel as massive as they should, and it applies that massive feeling to things that arent typically as massive as mountains; like skyscrapers for example.
    I dunno, i just really like it. Maybe its just my nostalgia.

      @@AntonioZL The description they dropped when releasing overpass descripted the map as being set in Berlin, but it used the Praque skyline and the Nuremberg TV tower. At least they got the language of the signs right... Almost, as there was an uncommon use of a transkripted Umlaut on one, prior to some update.
      Whatever, felt like the Berlin thing was really just an afterthought thrown in just for the maps description that many people probably didn't even read to begin with.

    I agree that Lake would be a good candidate for making a terrifically improved looking skybox in Source 2, especially out towards the lake itself.
    In Sweden I've been to a few vistas from summer houses facing a lake that you can actually see the other end of, and it gives off a warm fuzzy feeling to look at.
