New Question: I am going to Africa again for a photo Safari. Taking the OM-1 w 150-400, and the rest Canon R5 kit. (70-200 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8 and a 16mm STM) Leaving the RF 100-500 at home since I am taking the Oly big white. I was thinking about taking a full Oly kit and leaving the Canon stuff at home, but i would need another body. (I always take two bodies). I could get another OM-1, but I'm wondering if a OM-5 would do as well. I've never handled or shot an OM-5. Thoughts?
    06:52 @tkarlmann
Rob: I think one of my OM-D E-M1's sort-died. Even after a reset, the shutter will not go below 1/8 second! I tried everything I know of, and that shutter still bottoms out at 1/8s. My camera has never been dropped, in water, or abused in any way.
When I contacted OM Systems, on another matter, they mentioned, or I inquired, about the lack of apparent support, of any kind, for the original OM-D E-M1; and they confirmed this.
Do you know of anywhere this camera can be repaired? Is it just a loss? I've seen used Mark 1's going inexpensively on eBay. What do you think I should do?
Gosh, if I could get another OM-1 right now, I would. I do Weddings -- and was thinking of my Mark 1's as backups.
    Your thoughts?

Not only do the OM-1’s have the same menu system, but they can be cloned so that they are setup exactly the same. I do that with mine. I would never get the 5 as a second camera to backup an OM-1. Though I might take the EM-5 solo.

I just returned from an Africa photo safari. I took two OM-1. plus 150-400 and 40-150. Because of dust you don't want to change lenses so two bodies is essential.. You are absolutely correct that having two identical bodies really makes it much simpler. The downside of course is the cost. As long as you can afford it two OM-1's would be my choice.

This was great advise. I use both bodies. For wildlife and quick action (safaris) the OM1 is a hands-down champ. The OM5 is great for travel (especially with a small pancake zoom). I carry both when backpacking general scenic and wildlife. At a push, I can use the OM1 with the 300mm f4 and the OM-5 with the 40-150 f2.8 or 60mm macro. This combo allows BIF on the OM1 but can switch quickly to closer action with OM5. This could work as a budget safari outfit too. Money no object two OM1s its only weight!

Here’s another thing, if I have two of the same camera, I rarely carry a spare battery. I typically will use one camera much more than the second one. When the battery in the primary gets low, I can just switch the batteries. Very nice.

I have grips for all my small m4/3 cameras like EM5ii, Pen F and Lumix Gx9 even with small lenses. It’s only a small addition but it makes a lot of difference in handling.

Same here on my EM10 ii and Lumix GX85. Not really necessary using small lenses, but I just prefer the handling with the additional grip. I even added the largest Flipbak stick-on grip to my tiny Lumix GM5. Probably a holdover from shooting Nikon SLRs and DSLRs which have great grips.

@rob trek. My number 1 criterion for camera choice is ergonomics. The size/bulk and weight, how it feels in the hand, controls and where they're located, etc. And good glass, of course. If I don't just love shooting a camera, I get rid of it. Olympus has excelled at ergonomics as well as good glass for a very long time, going back to the Maitani designs (I still have an OM1n, and still shoot it). I do hope OMDS succeeds; the Olympus tradition and legacy is truly exceptional.

Rob, I've been into this Olympus / OM1 hobby for quite some time and continue to be thrilled. Your insights, guidance and enthusiasm all contribute to keeping me out of a rut and staying outdoors and shooting away. Thank you for your TH-cam episodes. Here's a question regarding the PEN F camera.. Have you any insight or knowledge of OM System bringing this fabulous everyday camera back into the market? Secondly, my trustee old OM5 Mark II, with its cracked screen (I fell into a stream while hiking; hit a rock), is starting to wind down and likely on its last pixels. As a backup camera to an OM1 and as an everyday street camera, would the PEN F be a better choice v another EM5 Mark 2, in your opinion?

I got pretty good results with the em5 III and the 75-300mm.
The only thing that ruined some pictures was heat from the stones on the ground warping some images, but I don’t think any camera could change that.

If the need is for a backup camera in case of equipment failure, I would consider an EM-1 Mark ii. It has the comfortable grip of an OM-1, and almost all of the features that really matter (weather sealing, most of all) and will cost less than an OM-5.

Don't forget that other MFT camera maker - I added a second hand Panasonic G9 to my EM5-3. It had nearly all the high end features of the EM1 range missing from the EM5, with several others of its own. It was cheaper than the Olympus equivalent, and because of its ergonomic design, much easier to pick up as a second camera. Mostly if you needed to change a setting, there was a button set up for you to do it.
This is a personal opinion, but I wouldn't have known how well it suited me if I had relied on videos and not tried it for myself.
So before committing to an expensive purchase which may turn out to have marginal benefit, I would recommend borrowing or hiring it before buying.

Hi Rob thanks for the great question videos, they are very helpful. So I bought the Star Adventurer Mini recently and due to weather and time I wasn't able to test it until I was at Noon Bells in Aspen Colorado. I turned on the tracker, has the camera in Live Time mode on the EM-1 Mark III for 2 minutes at a time. All I got was very dark photos. I used the same settings iso 1600, f 2.8 on the 7-14 only and shutter speed of 25 seconds, and I got a good picture. I set it to 60" in manual same settings and got a good picture. Does Live Time mode do something different besides just open the shutter until you hit the shutter button a 2nd time? I can't understand why that wouldn't work when manual mode did 🤷. I suppose I'll be stuck with having to stack 69" exposures or use a laptop like Ben did in one of his videos to get a longer exposure. Thank you!!

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi. LiveTime should have the same exposure as Bulb. Is it possible you were using LiveComp and not LiveTime? LiveComp would more likely give you a dark image depending on settings. As for stacking, you will get better results the more images you can stack. Ben and I use this intervalometer with bulb mode: th-cam.com/video/QlC4agFCwhA/w-d-xo.html

I have the EM-1Mark III, I suppose I will have to get the wired introvekomenter for that camera. I'd like to trade in my Mark III but when I try the current trade in that Olympus has going on it doesn't bring up that camera when I type it into the trade in field. Sorry Rob...you have been so helpful to me and my Olympus camera sys questions in the past. An unrelated subject...is there an IR shutter remote release device for Olympus cameras? I have searched on many sites and all the other MFG's seem to have made their own and can be used with third party IR remotes but I have failed to find one for Olympus. I have other wired and radio type remotes which work fine but being in a photo with the family and having a less complicated remote release device would be great. As usual any help would be appreciated.

Typically a solid yellow is charging from an almost dead battery. As the battery charges up, it will eventually start blinking in short bursts of 2 or 3. 2 bursts is >50%, 3 bursts >80%.

I am surprised by the number of workshop participants that show up without a backup camera body. Things happen, so I applaud the guy for wanting a backup or second body for his trip. In his case why not just rent one? Dropping $2,000 on a second OM-1 that doesn't seem to need seems pointless. It makes sense to take to OM-1s for the learning curve, but if I was buying, I would probably buy the OM-5 for a backup because of its lighter weight and size. It's nice to have something I can just slip in my pants pocket when I'm just walking around.

Rob: Thanks SO MUCH -- you 'fixed' my camera! Sure enough, as soon as I took the 'ailing' E-M1 out of Silent Shutter Mode -- it Worked all the way down to 60 sec.!
You saved me a useless repair bill!!!!
OK: here is my lineup: (1) OM-1; (1) E-M1 Mkiii; and (2) E-M1's. I really _need_ another OM-1 -- but I'm trying to limp along with what I have. Perhaps this is not good thinking. It _is_ tough to go between differing Menu systems; however, if I can get enough out of the Presets (in the E-M1 they call them "Mysets 1-4") then perhaps I can get some life out of them for my Wedding work. I like using camera bodies as (rear) 'lens caps' rather than fool around changing lenses during a Wedding. I _will_ miss the all-cross AF sensors on the OM-1, though.
I have _no_ accessories for my cameras, yet. I am fixated on getting the Lenses I need, first -- building towards Wedding work with the OM/Olympus gear.
Bonus: I have a 'Tip' for YOU! Have you noticed how much faster lenses with in-lens-stabilization works for HHHS?
I _just_ got my new-favorite lens -- the 12-100 F4 Pro. (You just have to remember to turn in-lens stabilization ON in the Menus: "Lens IS Priority"!!) Wow! If it's outdoors; I'm using this lens. I'll save my 12-40 f2.8 and my 40-150 f2.8 for the dark Churches -- along with my fabulous 75 f1.8, my 8mm f1.8, and my trio of 17, 25, & 45mm f1.8's. (The f1.2's are forthcoming -- just not yet -- $$$ & weight).
Do you have any thoughts on using a FF, f1.4 lens (like the Sigma 56mm f1.4) with one of those adapters that make it into a faster lens?
Your thoughts? Thanks savior Rob, again!!!!!

Getting good lenses first is good practice. I didn't know about HHHS working better on lenses with IS. I only have the 300mm f/4 and I never tried HHHS with it. As for those focal reducer adapters, I'm not a fan. I'll do a video on it since I do have one but never use it.

There is something that has made me very curious. I have seen that when rating the DXO Mark sensors it turns out that they give a higher score to the OM5 than to the OM1 (specifically it wins in the aspect of sensitivity in low light), and of course in that rating the OM5 surpasses the E-M1 MarkIII (despite of theoretically sharing the same processor and sensor) in color depth, dynamic range and low light sensitivity.🙃
So I'm wondering if that means OM System has made improvements to the circuitry or software over the M1 Mark III (although I haven't seen any serious comparisons between the OM5, OM1 or M1MarkIII)😁
