    I have had this camera for 3 weeks and have spent a lot of time figuring out the menu. I have been a photographer since 1959, shooting for a weekly newspaper for 10 years, freelance to magazines, shot weddings,etc. I wanted to continue with my photography and started looking for a lighter camera. I traded in my fujifilm Pro 2, XT 20 and four lenses and bought the MO 5. This camera isn’t just for new photographers but also for those of us older photographers who wanted a lighter camera. Today I shoot street and this work well with the older prime lenses.

    A fantastic, real review. Thank you. I just bought this model after using 10 years the EM-10 (which I gave to my youngest son as a gift). Even after the bad reviews (USB and more) and it being in the market for over a year now. Really did not want anything bulkier. 10's and 5's are great everywhere, and a pure joy to use. Even the menus become familiar after some use...

    I've watched several review videos of the OM-5 and this is the best I've seen so far. It's great you've actually used it and aren't just parroting the marketing stuff. Well done.

    I bought this camera earlier this year and really REALLY love it. My only frustration (and you mentioned this) is the sheer quantity of options in their massive menu. I constantly fight with trying to find the proper menus when I want to try something new. I found the Live Comp mode to be THE most fun and it seems to be highly versatile, especially if you don't mind using ND filters to work more in daylight. (the included 4 stops are NOT enough for most daylight work though)
    Overall, you are spot on about the battery life and I now own 3 batteries to counter this issue. They are small enough to fit in any sized camera bag/case.
    Now to start learning about how to utilize Pro-capture and the Hi_Res features...
    Cheers!

      The menu 🤯 There's not a perfect camera menu, unfortunately... they all have their own unique ways of burying information and strange ways of laying things out, but once you've been using it for a while and if you're prepared to take a bit of time to learn the systems then you'll be fine and you'll get the most from the camera. Great to hear you're enjoying it and loving the features. Pro-Capture is amazing for wildlife - OM System have a video which will help you get set up (th-cam.com/video/RjIKedW43HA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=H34MH1Y5MqR4DevE) Thanks for watching 😊

    I really like the unique features that only the Olympus OM5 has, which you can't find in other brands. It's much lighter compared to my Nikon D850, making it perfect for street and travel photography. I just ordered it from Amazon

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Please don't order from Amazon - please support the independent retailers that go to the trouble of putting these reviews together and who will actually look after you if you have a problem or need help. We're here in the UK, but please find your country or region's experts to buy from... not a soulless box-shifting high-street killer like Amazon 👍

      I'm sure you'll enjoy the OM5 Phil. I got it recently, great features and layout. Lightweight. Really like Live Comp and Starry Sky AF for Astrophotography. Also used with 40-150 f4 Pro Lens. CAF, captured shots of our dog diving in the Ocean:)! The spray and his eyes were sharp.

    Great review! Thank you! It looks like a very good camera that could / should be better. USB-C, better EVF and the new menu would make a lot of difference… But for travel, adventure photography is difficult to find something lighter smaller better with so many photographic possibilities.

      I've got the OM5. My Menu and extra Custom button options are great, no issues with the Menu. Yes USB-C is not up to date but I have a Battery Charger which works fine and anyway at night with USB-C just plug in. Sure, good to have a spare battery or two as I do. Love the size, lightweight and packed features. Used with 12-45 f4 & 40-150 f4 Pro lenses. People want this camera to be more like upgrades on OM1 but OM5 is a lot cheaper for a reason. Thanks Wilkinson for the Review by the way:)

    Excellent overview and I think you really nailed it's sweet spot, the daily shooter you can pack anywhere, rain or shine. As an EM5iii user, no incentive to upgrade even though it is the camera I use the most by far. I have an EM1x recently picked up at a bargain price used, which has almost all the new features added to the OM5 anyway (a used EM1x + used EM5iii could be had for not much more than the new OM5, that is the math). I would be more interested in sensor upgrades, but maybe wait another cycle or two for the differences to be really material.

    • @WilkinsonCameras
      @WilkinsonCameras  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Richard and thanks for watching. I agree that there’s not a huge reason to upgrade from the Mark III. Let’s hope for something really exciting in an O-M5 Mark II… whenever that might be!

    I like this video, there's a good mix of strengths and weaknesses, and good explanations of the technical features Olympus offers in addition to great image quality. Personally I have more than enough camera bodies, and will wait for something to break to make an excuse to buy a new one. I don't quite see the video being oversharpened.
    I'm curious if the My Menu feature ever became useful for the reviewers, since I'm not sure how effective it'd be if the menu setup is obtuse to a user. I can imagine it would only help, but I've been wrong before.

  • @RobShootPhotos
    @RobShootPhotos ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That exactly it. This is an all arounder camera. "This camera has amazing AF and it provides pre burst shooting." Maybe but you have horrible rolling shutter or crop in with burst mode or only output JPEG for pre burst.
    "This camera is an excellent Vlogging camera" Sure...but it's lacking a second dial or no IBIS.
    Then there are little to no computational features that I use such as Focus Stacking and ok fine...some do have some sort of Live Comp but it's limited in settings.
    Then many of the $1,000-1,200 cameras all have UHS-1 card slots.
    I've been round and round about looking at other brands and just can't quite using OM-SYSTEM Olympus cameras because the other brands compromise the features I use and all the other things I don't use as much is good enough for me.
    Nice review. Glad you actually looked at what the specs and tested things to see the improvements than basically tell people "yeah it's the same camera." You actually found things that most reviews didn't even go over and assume are all the same.

    t is certainly an improvement on the Olympus OM-D-E M5 Mark III. But as you say, no need to replace my Olympus OM-E M5 Mark III. What I am looking forward to is the renewal of the sensor, which has been around for too long and needs to be updated. The sensor of the OM-5 is also an older, improved version of an earlier Olympus camera. So a new sensor that can rival the latest cameras on the market might convince me to buy a new now OM-System camera

      @WilkinsonCameras  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for watching 😊 Whilst the OM-1 shares lots of similar features, such as Live ND, Live Composite, etc. it’s a much more powerful camera than the OM-5. The OM-1 features a stacked BSI sensor and much improved AF and a faster processor. So think of it being like a computer… same programs, but better hardware which means you can run them faster and choose more powerful options.
      The OM-1 is the top of the OM System / Olympus range. It excels at speed, so very good for action and wildlife but also has enhanced video features. Plus a better viewfinder, which I’d always consider a massive bonus. Don’t worry, your purchase won’t be one that you regret - it’s a great camera and the extra spend does get you a lot more.

  • @wikicamara

    It is a good camera for new clients… BUT ! Sticking with micro USB and not upgrading to Usb-C, plus not porting the new menu system seen in the OM1, launched earlier, makes no sense. Looking to upgrade my EM5 mk II for better AF, but spending 1.3k on already dated tech makes no sense. I feel deeply disappointed.

      use a ND filter. Cameras have their native ISOs, setting it too low will have lesser dynamic range.

      @@WilkinsonCameras It feels like everything new in the OM-5 is stuff we were annoyed didn’t make the cut in the EM-5Mk iii (like webcam - which the EM-5 Mk ii had). So maybe a better marketing message would have been for OM Digital to say, “Remember how when the EM-5 Mk iii came out, everyone said, ‘Why didn’t Olympus include [INSERT FEATURE HERE]?’ Well, we’re fixing that.”
