I saw a comment a while back where someone caught something I hadn't. Nate brings up the photo of him & Ted that he gave him as a gift. The reason it's not on Ted's desk is that he took it home. It's in Ted's flat, next to a picture of his son. That's how much Nate means to him. He just hadn't been showing quite as much because he was caught up in his own troubles but Nate took that as abandonment because he has issues getting his own father's approval and was desperate to keep Ted's. Just an easily missed detail that adds even more depth to that scene.
yep, Nate's picture is literally next to Ted's son's on Ted's bedside table. But Ted wasnt able to get that in during the confrontation, and Nate didnt want to hear it.
The actor playing Nathan posted something on Twitter (I think) after the season 2 finale to show us the path that lead Nathan here, this is what was written: The first time we ever see Nate he's shouting at Ted. . The roast from season 1 is fun and taken in good spirits, but you can see how much of a kick Nate gets out of laying into the players. It's payback time! . When Nate first believes he's been fired at the end of season 1 he turns on Rebecca and calls her a 'shrew'. A first glimpse into his nasty side. . The hair-colour change was deliberate. I have flecks of grey that were painted out in season 1 and were painted more and more grey as season 2 progressed (it's a wig by the very end!) Thanks to Nicky Austin and Alexis Dolman for making this happen! . In the way bitterness, guilt, shame and stress can often change someone's appearance, they thought it would be fun to track Nate's spiral in this way (in my head Nate was transforming into José Mourinho!) . A lot of the key beats in Nate's season 2 journey are unheard, unseen or dialogue-free, but they were all scripted (including the spitting, yuck!) . Speaking of which, when Nate spits, he's both physically and metaphorically spitting at himself. Deep down I think/hope he hates what he's becoming. Though whether he will be truly redeemed I genuinely don't know. . The opening and closing shots of season 2 are the same, but in the final shot the light in Nate's eyes has supposedly 'gone out' - also scripted. . The only scene solely between Ted and Nate in season two is in episode 12. The last scene before this was when Ted apologised for snapping at Nate in season 1 just before Nate delivers the roast in episode 7. Brilliant job by the writers on showing rather than telling just how abandoned Nate feels. . Similarly, when Beard calls Nate out on his behaviour against Colin in episode 7 - Nate's first reaction is to ask whether he told Ted. Ted is largely unaware of Nate's downfall until he receives the text at the end of episode 11. . Not to condone Nate's subsequent behaviour or attitude, but season 2 is jam full of micro aggressions against Nate... From Ted laughing at the prospect of Nate being a 'big dog', to Roy not being bothered that Nate made an inappropriate move on Keeley, to him not receiving a Nespresso machine. The latter for me is a great example of jokes having consequences which Jason has spoken about a lot. It feels like a joke (and is essentially played that way in the scene) but you know this is the kind of stuff that is ripping Nate in two. . The picture that Nate gave Ted for Christmas is next to Ted's picture of his son at home (which we get a glimpse of as Ted is getting ready for the funeral and before his panic attack). I recall this being one of Bill Lawrence's ideas (a typically emotional beat!) from a while ago and it devastated me when he first told me about it. . Also, when Brendan Hunt casually told me their plans to have the 'Believe' sign being ripped in two I fell on the floor and screamed! Once again, here are the names of the phenomenal writing team: Ashley Nicole Black, Brendan Hunt, Joe Kelly, Phoebe Walsh, Brett Goldstein, Jane Becker, Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Leann Bowen, Jamie Lee, Bill Wrubel and Sasha Garron. Rebecca went from wanting to sabotage the team, to the entire team being there for her at one of the most painful moments of her life, ted changed everyone's lives so much😭😭😭
And she’s not yet done, although Rebecca’s “final form” is in sight and not exactly unpredictable after this lot; by the end of Season 1 she’d changed from wanting to sabotage the team to spite Rupert, into wanting them to succeed and prove him wrong. But Season 2 going into 3 (particularly with her mother’s advice) sets up how the best revenge is indeed, living well.
The path of Nate is so well done. He is really an indirect product of Ted’s huge heart-he is so nice to everyone and wants to help everyone. Nate desperately needed someone like that in his life and Ted filled that hole, and then when Nate wanted more and Ted was having his mental issues, Nate wasn’t getting the love he had felt before. It’s a brilliant way of showcasing that people like Ted can accidentally be a catalyst for disaster in someone else and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows all the time. I’m of course not saying that it’s Ted’s fault with Nate’s downfall, it’s just brilliant to show that pure love and support can accidentally create a “monster”. I’m excited for you to see Season 3. Brett Goldstein might be paid very well now, but the first season of Ted Lasso took like five years to make it to TV. He had so many projects going on, and he was doing small-club standup, had a podcast with a 1000-subscriber Patreon and tiny youtube channel where he published a dating show where he was dating a plant and cellphone videos of him singing Muppet-songs. In just 18 months he went from completely unknown writer and standup outside of the UK, to an Emmy-award winning actor who made a show for Apple with Harrison Ford and famous enough that a three second shot of him became the post-credit stinger of a Marvel Movie.
That's so funny about Rick Astley, I finished school March 1987, my first job was in a factory with BBC Radio 1 on all day, and they played Never going to give you up all day long 7 or 8 times while we were working on the usual chart playlist. We all thought he might be a black singer until he hit Number 1 and was on Top Of the Pops on camera! I can just about enjoy it again after the internet ruined it with Rick Rolled! I've rewatched the whole series 4 times now, and with the benefit of knowing what is coming, you can see from the very start that Nate was ALWAYS a jerk. This isn't something that popped up when he got promoted, being promoted just gave him the authority to express it more.
Nate's not a jerk. He's just a man approaching middle age doing a job meant from a young lad, someone who's been emasculated and even bullied by young, fit, rich, good looking footballers for a long time and suddenly he gets a father figure who actually believes in him and gives him a platform to shine I just think when you've been as insular for as long as Nate has when you suddenly get that attention it can result in someone not socially mature enough to actually be confident without becoming an asshole. The clues are littered around the first 2 seasons as to what has caused this behavior, some subtle, some not so but in terms of a jerk from the off. No way

Rebecca's Mom saying she was glad she hated her because she'd take her anger over her indifference any day is one of the hardest hitting lines in any show. Because when people truly stop caring about you and they become indifferent... you know it's happening but until they admit it you keep trying and it hurts SO MUCH. Then the very next episode the whole thing with the letter where you said it best... you don't need to know what it said because his eyes told the story... it's absolutely brilliant writing and of course acting. Those two moments get glossed over in far too many reactions. Thanks Funny Medium Gal!
No one hates Nate more than Nate. So afraid to be himself. Hates that he can’t crack the code of “the right way to be”. And the only latest example set by the ppl around him has been bullying….before Ted. He's frustrated and in turn is incredibly frustrating himself. Insecure and doing all of the things he thinks are expected of him. And when people don't respond the way he thinks they SHOULD respond, he takes that as confirmation of his inadequacy, gets angry and counter-attacks. Ironically creating the bad relationship he only imagined before. I like his character's journey. I think this type of person is well written. I've known a few people like this. I'm pretty sure they don't even know they're doing it. I have been this person....... and maybe still am from time to time (hopefully less so since I'm aware of it).
Regarding Nate's hair getting more gray, I think they were trying to somewhat make him resemble Jose Mourinho, who is one of the most successful managers of all time that is/was considered a tactical genius. He's a very loud figure that's never been afraid to remark on how great he is, and actually came up with the phrase "park the bus" that Nate said a few episodes ago when he took over after Ted had his panic attack
Akufu sending Sam the jersey with the number 10 on it is especially significant. Ever since Pele (one of the greatest players of all time) wore number 10, the best player on the team generally has the honor of wearing 10.

Thought on the age differences. Rebecca has been confirmed to be between 47-50 years old. So that's a pretty significant difference. When Rupert came to her office to tell her he was having a baby, she responded that he was nearly 70, so they had their own age difference. In the first season, Keeley lamented that when she was 16, she was dating a 23 yo footballer, and now that she was 30, she was still dating a 23 yo footballer.
For all of the amazing and powerfully-written women on this show, I very much appreciate its deep dive into the world of toxic masculinity, positive and negative male role models, and the ways in which men are "supposed" to act in all kinds of situations. The effects our fathers have on us, whether good or bad, and how we react to and internalize that. Even the twist of learning that Trent basically got himself fired in order to seek out a life with more meaning. It's really just all so powerful. Thank you for helping me relive all of it, even as I currently am in the middle of season 3 🤗 Football is life! Also RIP to both Cindy Clawford and Earl Greyhound.

Soooooo funny to me how Anthony Head's Rupert Mannion is like a giant homage to his character Phil Norton on Howard's way in the 80's. It was only for a few episodes, but the man really knows how to portray an overprivileged a-hole you love to hate
I adore Rebecca's mother. Until now she comes off as aloof and a bit silly but the reality is she is just wise enough to no better half the time. Her advice of "it is more important to be loving than to be right" is so spot on.
I'm starting to realize Nate has the Darth Vader origin story that we should have gotten. He started off an innocent victim, found a great mentor who showed him how to embrace and use his power, but his tragic origins make him unable to maturely handle that power, hating himself for not having more, and eventually succumbing to pettiness and betrayal because he just can't be happy with what he has. When he was weak, he saw everyone as a threat, and that point of view didn't change after Ted empowered him.
Ted didn’t abandon Nate, he promoted him to an equal, made him a coach, made him a diamond dog. But as you say Nate was trying to build a surrogate father out of Ted. Treating someone like a friend and fellow autonomous adult can feel like being ignored in situations like that. But yeah by the end they’ve done a pretty successful job of making Nate effectively loathsome and perhaps irredeemable.

I think one of my top 3 favorite parts of the series, is when Bumbercatch yells "Follow the Money!!" When they talking about messing up the person who whistle blew Ted's panic attack 😂😂
I'm going to push back on the "kill them with kindness" a bit: it doesn't work on narcissists. A narcissist *demands* that you treat them nicely, to do anything else makes you either a target or a threat. We actually see this with Akufu and Sam: Sam, being gracious and respectful, turns down Akufu, but Akufu is such a self-absorbed monster that anything that doesn't fit his world view of himself must be mocked or destroyed. With Rupert, he is so used to everyone doing exactly what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants, it's become a game to him: he gets to show people he's "smarter" than them, but that only happens because people don't push back or take him down a peg. Recall the dart game with Ted: Rupert was reveling thinking that he was toying with Ted, that he was letting Ted get close enough to have hope, but Rupert was drinking in the idea of putting this American in his place, one-upping Rebecca "again", and still getting to do what he wanted with the club. But then Ted, an sweet, unassuming man, pegged Rupert to the *fucking wall* because he saw who Rupert is and what he was trying to do, but could actually do something about it. Ted let Rupert have the lead because he knew the last-second win over Rupert would rock Rupert's self confidence. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Rupert's purchase of West Ham and the preceding head-hunting of Nate was entirely to hurt Ted over the humiliation he felt at the loss of the dart game. He might very well have been influencing Nate in ways we didn't get to see directly, just shown these little quiet moments of Rupert whispering in Nate's ear. A regular person would absolutely be affected by even someone who hates them being kind to them, but a narcissist only sees it as the proper order of the universe.
"Killem with Kindness" isn't about winning someone over. It's about controlling yourself and not taking their bait. Reacting in a angry or spiteful way is exactly what they want. They will make you out to be the one with bad behavior. If you just stick to being nice and not respond the way they need you to, you win. Every time.
I think part of what cause Collin to not think he is a strong and capable man is his inability to drive a sports car…. And I will whole heartedly agree with him in that premise. If you can’t drive stick…. You have every right to question if you are capable.
Watching the episode focused on Coach Beard felt exactly like that time I spent a whole day with my most, shall we say, eccentric friend going along with his normal routine.
I've had a few nights out that have gone surreally bizarre. Mostly decades ago now, but a few recently. Like you, the root cause was volatile and eccentric friends. Those are treasured memories, actually. (Of those I remember, at least.)
This is a series filled with infinite tiny details that help to make up the overall story. You see more of these details on the first pass than any of the other reactors to this series. It is a joy to watch you watch the show. I came out of season two hating what Nate did, but mostly feeling very sorry for his obviously emotionally crippled state. He's a mess.

We have to remember Nate is from nothing to enormous power and that can be jarring. Once there he is mocked, belittled and treated, to some degree, like Nate was before and within these reactions you really see that.
I've watched this show several times, and it's the first time I caught that joke about Ted "looking like that guy from The Hangover" without his mustache. Jason Sudeikis used to get mistaken for Ed Helms earlier in his career when they were both doing comedy movies at the same time. Ed Helms was more distinct at the time because of The Hangover and The Office.
I love this show so much. It’s not the kind of show that’s normally in my wheelhouse - I’m an action/fantasy/horror/sci-fi guy - but sometimes a little gem comes along that snaps you out of your patterns, and Ted Lasso does that for me. It’s such a great exploration of toxic masculinity and such a great portrayal positive masculinity that it has become a forever favorite for me. So many other creative teams would have chosen to go with dark comedy with this material, but Ted Lasso chose a higher calling and gave us something of true service. It’s now my list of comedies I’ll skip any other show or movie in my wheelhouse to watch. Right alongside Legally Blonde & Miss Congeniality…
The Breard episode makes more sense when you know that Series 2 was originally set to be 10 episodes and that 2 additional episodes were commissioned after the story arc for the season was set in place. Thus the Christmas episode and Beard after dark were additional episodes outside the original planned series arc.
He's not spitting on a mirror. He's spitting on himself, the mirror is just a container. The fact that he was introduced in the first episode kicking around poop showed all that was needed to know about his character, he sees himself as a turd.

Nate said in season 1 that his greatest fear is aging. (Silly to me, as I'm on the shady side of fifty - it seems a greater fear should be *NOT* aging). As his character darkens in season 2, he goes prematurely and completely grey. The writers do a wonderful job of planting little things like that throughout.
you’re one of the few people i’ve seen who picked up on ted’s borderline alcoholic tendencies. i was starting to think i was seeing things because practically no one else mentions it 😅
The writing on this show was fantastic. I think the whole world hated Nate for about 2-3 days when this first aired. But I eventually calmed my anger and started to look at it more compassionately. It is a very rare show that not only has something serious to say about personal relationships, but then leads you through a complicated one, makes you feel personally involved in that relationship, and then helps you work through those feelings. A rare miracle of a show.
Since you seem to enjoy this show a lot, I recommend The Good Place. Not going to spoil anything, and I strongly recommend not reading up contents. But it doe share some qualities of Ted Lasso, and has excellent writing. Of the two I do prefer TGP, as much as I love Ted Lasso.
i wanna let ya know you are one of my favorite reactors because you show so much emotion openly. I cry so much watching these shows and i love seeing others experience it in a similar way
First thing I have to say was something my sister pointed out, Sam has FAR too much game for a 21 year old. 😂 Everything with Nate finally came to a head here, his character progression here is very subtle and it took me a while to get a handle on. You're on the money with the observation of him starting as lowest on the totem pole, not only in his responsibilities but in how he was treated by the team early on, and by Jamie especially. He's someone who has been belittled in his professional life and minimized in his family and personal life, (again, fathers is the prominent theme of the season) and this sets him up as a ticking time bomb. The "motivational" speech Nate does with the various team members in season 1 can be seen in a MUCH different light rewatching it with knowledge of what happens in S2. Nate has just a bit of power and authority in his job, maybe for the first time, and he gets right to belittling the team. It's framed in a positive way, and maybe he fully meant it that way, but it's revealing about his character. His father doesn't seem to be much of an example to him, doesn't seem to pay him mind at all, so what he knows of masculinity he's probably learned from the sport and from the footballers. His understanding and later expression of being a man is to be adversarial, to be dominant, we see that in his treatment of Colin and Will. And then there's the spitting. We see it depicted twice to make sure it's underlined, but it's the first time in the restaurant bathroom that I think back to. Where he tries out Rebecca's trick of making himself bigger, but he doesn't feel it. What DOES work for him is spitting on his own image, of what he probably sees as the part of himself that is weak. A way to push himself forward and degrade what he sees of the meek and lovable Nate from season 1, so he can "be a man." Because he doesn't know how to express that part of himself in any kind of healthy way. And that speech in the end. There's SO much of his speech that has nothing to do with Ted. It's like he's having a conversation with a different person, which I believe he is. "You abandoned me. I worked my ass off to get your attention. You should f*ck off to where you belong _with your son._" His father doesn't show him attention or affection, never taught him how to be man in any kind of healthy way, and now Nate is expressing his masculinity in all of the unhealthy ways he's learned from everywhere else.
Love your finishing thoughts and sharing the anger you felt with the loss of your sister. Really hit me with my Dad passing because he didn't tell us he was sick. Was completely blindsided when I found out he was in hospice for a week. Think he didn't want to impose or worry us. I understood and forgave him for it when I had time to think about him trying to protect us kids from the pain and fear he was feeling but wished he understood he didn't have to carry it alone. Good game of Tetris, too.
A lot of people have dissed the next season. I love it a lot. Some fabulous episodes. Sam’s Father dancing, Amsterdam, bicycle lessons, pillow fights and Ted getting the worst news about who his ex wife is seeing.
I've found new respect for you from your comments on supporting the current writers strike. Anyhow, always enjoyed your post view thoughts on each episode. I can't wait for you to move on to season 3, which is the best season of the series. Keep up the good work.
Hi there! Really enjoy your reactions! You’re so compassionate and always trying to see smth good in all the characters! Very excited for you to hop on season 3, and would be very interested in seeing your characters ranking at the end of the show. Next season will really shake up whatever ranking you have now - some characters will seem less interesting and convincing on their own, while others will climb right on top and steal your heart! At least that is what happened to me.
I want to do the tree burial, but far out in the middle of a forest in a clearing so the tree gets sunlight. Or to be stuffed and springloaded behind a random door to scare people. Either one.
Since I didn't binge this season, I didn't notice something that you pointed out: that Nate's hair was gradually getting grayer, until that final shot where it's gone almost full gray. Interesting metaphor for his character arc.

I've heard you mention a few times you don't get what offsides is exactly. I get why it's confusing, but simply put: Offsides is when a player is behind the last defender (excluding the goalie) before the ball is passed to them. But if the ball is kicked while the receiving player is still in front of the last defender and then the player runs past the last defender to receive the ball, they are still onside. So, when Jamie received that pass at the end of the last game while he was behind the last defender, he had started in front of the last defender when it was kicked (in an onside position) and then ran past that defender to receive the pass. So, not offside.
Hope you enjoy season 3. Its a little uneven but has some of the real highlights of the show for me. Sad to be on the verge of the season finale and have no more Ted to look forward to. Nates breakdown is well executed. If you rewatch the season Ted has no one on one scenes with Nate since season 1. In his mind he has been set aside by his mentor. As a mental health coach I see the damage that poor communication and assumptions can inflict on a psyche all the time and this really resonated with me.
@@Wiley_Coyote I have enjoyed the individual stories and loved the payoffs when they have come but some of the overall narrative seems to have taken a backseat to "issue of the week" storytelling. I have loved each week but can see the complaints that some of the larger plots have seemed rushed, disjointed and could have been expanded.

I think the mark of great writing is to take something that someone wouldn't normally think that would inspire genuine emotion. The fact that they were able to take "Never Gonna Give You Up" and make it an emotional moment is incredible. Reminds me of the true or secret ending to God of War Ragnarök. They took a child's riddle and almost broke heart with it.
OMG make sure you get tissues close and ready to go for season 3. Especially from like episode 3x06 on. Part of me wishes I could add to the commentary for that episode specifically but I don’t wanna spoil it for ya. The tears aren’t for sadness. More joy like the hugging moment several times and just relation and relief to the moments. Will warn many episodes are pushing an hour in length so may wanna go to 2 per video vs 3

This also holds true for any free-kicks, or corner-kicks .. .. So, even though Jamie 'F*****g' Tartt is wide open when he gets the ball, it doesn't mean he was offside .. .. You cant be offside if you receive the ball from a throw-in, a goal kick, or a corner kick. Also you cannot be offside if the pass originates in the goal box (not confused with the penalty box).
I feel really bad for Nate also….. 😢 I always took Nate’s real issue is that deep down, he hates himself. When everyone picked on him, it reinforced that, then as he found acceptance & got praise, it is what he always wanted, but he can’t believe it is real. So he goes ahead & sabotages everything good around him. The more he does, the anger feels good which I don’t think can last… because deep down he still hates himself- prob even more.
There was a saying back in the seventies after China had been closed off for years and years to the west and Nixon was the first to visit and establish relations. For decades afterwards the media would say: “Only Nixon can go to China.” Meaning only someone with great diplomatic skills (regardless of what you think of Nixon) could negotiate with such a formidable opponent. I thought the same thing when I saw the hug. Only Roy can help Jamie.
Nate definitely isn’t being mean to get attention. I’d recommend watching one of your S1 videos to see how he acts, because his meanness is there is S1 as well, but because he wasn’t in a position of power, he never felt comfortable speaking out. His rudeness is a coping mechanism since his father refused to praise him, and the players constantly mocked him, so he feels horrible about himself and picks out everyone else’s flaws to make himself feel better.
Nate spitting at his image in the mirror is perhaps Nate spitting at the vulnerable part of himself. Needing to not feel bad about himself. He needs to reconcile himself with his dad; he's old enough to get beyond teenage rebellion. His father's advice has been religious or spiritual, lessons learned over time. It's time.
You are right about the spitting and if you look near the top of the comments,you will see someone has pasted the Actor's Twitter comments about his character in Season 2 including the spitting incident.
One great thing about these rewatches is how many call backs there on in season 3 that I didn't realize/remember that they were referencing previous seasons when they happened. Won't specify which one was shown here that stuck out for me but folks who have watched through the latest episode will know which one I'm referring to.
Also, don't know if you've seen it, but the whole punch on the pitch and hug thing between Jamie and Roy is a play on similar circumstances in the movie Major League. Also, I love the minor story arc for Trent Grimm over the first two seasons.
I've never seen it addressed by the show creators but to me there is no way it wasn't intentional, but Nate's suits parallel his insecurity and acknowledgement issues. When we first see him in a suit it is his father's suit, and it is too big for him. As we saw in his interactions with him, no matter what he did, he felt he never measured up to what his dad wanted. Nothing was enough to get him proper recognition. He never filled that suit. Then Ted bought him a suit and it fit perfectly. At this point Nate felt happy, recognized. Like he said to Ted, he felt like the most important person in the world by the recognition Ted gave him. At that point, the suit was tailor made for him. But then, as the 2nd season progressed, that suit started looking too tight for Nate. By now Nate felt he was not getting enough recognition from Ted or anyone else. What he got no longer felt appropriate for him, he felt like he deserved more, which was how he looked too. A man in a suit too small for his size.
One quick point about Nate’s hair. In season one they make a throw away joke about nate not liking being in the water for long as his fingers get wrinkly, and he is afraid of aging. I think the show is conveying that he has stopped dieing his hair black hence it’s going gray
He isn’t. Offsides is about when the ball is played (passed) not when it’s received. He could have easily been onsides when the ball was played and simply timed his run well. Happens all the time, especially with long through balls like this. If he had been offsides, the VAR would have caught it.
@@michaelwukela344 Oh, I know the rule. There's simply no way Jamie is that much faster than Sam (who we see and appears to be onside when the ball was touched). And as far as the show is concerned, I don't remember if we ever see VAR.
@@douglas2938 First of all, it’s hilarious that we’re arguing about whether a fictional player is offsides in a fictional game. These are arguments only football fans have and I am so here for it. Secondly, he’s only a couple of strides ahead of Sam and, given that Sam is a midfielder (whose been running box to box all game) and Jamie is a striker (who is probably faster even when they’re both rested) isn’t unrealistic. Plus, you’re assuming that they both started in the same position and timed their runs for the same exact moment and none of the defenders was keeping them on trying to pull an offsides trap. Having been that defender before, let me tell you, this is exactly what it looks like. Also, assuming that Sam saw the run, he wouldn’t be trying to keep pace with Jamie because doing so would only bring the defender marking Sam to Jamie. He’d want to keep space so Jamie, the striker, could have a clear shot on goal.
@@michaelwukela344 Oh yeah, but I think that's more of an issue with the coordination. The slow camera emphasized that both Sam and Jamie are trying to shake off their opponents and preparing to make their runs, but when it cuts back to the overview both defenders have fallen way behind and they're both running on the same side rather than trying to stretch the line. If not for the RCB napping on the other side, Sam might have been offside too. 😆
I saw a comment a while back where someone caught something I hadn't. Nate brings up the photo of him & Ted that he gave him as a gift. The reason it's not on Ted's desk is that he took it home. It's in Ted's flat, next to a picture of his son. That's how much Nate means to him. He just hadn't been showing quite as much because he was caught up in his own troubles but Nate took that as abandonment because he has issues getting his own father's approval and was desperate to keep Ted's. Just an easily missed detail that adds even more depth to that scene.
yep, Nate's picture is literally next to Ted's son's on Ted's bedside table. But Ted wasnt able to get that in during the confrontation, and Nate didnt want to hear it.

. The roast from season 1 is fun and taken in good spirits, but you can see how much of a kick Nate gets
out of laying into the players. It's payback time! . When Nate first believes he's been fired at the end of season 1 he turns on Rebecca and calls her a

. The hair-colour change was deliberate. I have flecks of grey that were painted out in season 1 and were
painted more and more grey as season 2 progressed (it's a wig by the very end!) Thanks to Nicky Austin and Alexis Dolman for making this happen! . In the way bitterness, guilt, shame and stress can often change someone's appearance, they thought it would be fun to track Nate's spiral in this way (in my head Nate was transforming into José Mourinho!)
. A lot of the key beats in Nate's season 2 journey are unheard, unseen or dialogue-free, but they were all
scripted (including the spitting, yuck!)
. Speaking of which, when Nate spits, he's both physically and metaphorically spitting at himself. Deep down I think/hope he hates what he's becoming. Though whether he will be truly redeemed I genuinely don't know.
. The opening and closing shots of season 2 are the same, but in the final shot the light in Nate's eyes has supposedly 'gone out' - also scripted.
. The only scene solely between Ted and Nate in season two is in episode 12. The last scene before this was when Ted apologised for snapping at Nate in season 1 just before Nate delivers the roast in episode
7. Brilliant job by the writers on showing rather than telling just how abandoned Nate feels.
. Similarly, when Beard calls Nate out on his behaviour against Colin in episode 7 - Nate's first reaction is
to ask whether he told Ted. Ted is largely unaware of Nate's downfall until he receives the text at the end
of episode 11.
. Not to condone Nate's subsequent behaviour or attitude, but season 2 is jam full of micro aggressions against Nate... From Ted laughing at the prospect of Nate being a 'big dog', to Roy not being bothered that Nate made an inappropriate move on Keeley, to him not receiving a Nespresso machine. The latter for me is a great example of jokes having consequences which Jason has spoken about a lot. It feels like a joke (and is essentially played that way in the scene) but you know this is the kind of stuff that is ripping Nate in two.
. The picture that Nate gave Ted for Christmas is next to Ted's picture of his son at home (which we get a glimpse of as Ted is getting ready for the funeral and before his panic attack). I recall this being one of Bill Lawrence's ideas (a typically emotional beat!) from a while ago and it devastated me when he first told me about it.
. Also, when Brendan Hunt casually told me their plans to have the 'Believe' sign being ripped in two I fell on the floor and screamed!

Rebecca went from wanting to sabotage the team, to the entire team being there for her at one of the most painful moments of her life, ted changed everyone's lives so much😭😭😭
And she’s not yet done, although Rebecca’s “final form” is in sight and not exactly unpredictable after this lot; by the end of Season 1 she’d changed from wanting to sabotage the team to spite Rupert, into wanting them to succeed and prove him wrong. But Season 2 going into 3 (particularly with her mother’s advice) sets up how the best revenge is indeed, living well.
The cutting back between Ted and Rebecca almost makes it seem like their bad day was the same day.

The path of Nate is so well done. He is really an indirect product of Ted’s huge heart-he is so nice to everyone and wants to help everyone. Nate desperately needed someone like that in his life and Ted filled that hole, and then when Nate wanted more and Ted was having his mental issues, Nate wasn’t getting the love he had felt before. It’s a brilliant way of showcasing that people like Ted can accidentally be a catalyst for disaster in someone else and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows all the time. I’m of course not saying that it’s Ted’s fault with Nate’s downfall, it’s just brilliant to show that pure love and support can accidentally create a “monster”. I’m excited for you to see Season 3. Love the reactions!
Brett Goldstein might be paid very well now, but the first season of Ted Lasso took like five years to make it to TV. He had so many projects going on, and he was doing small-club standup, had a podcast with a 1000-subscriber Patreon and tiny youtube channel where he published a dating show where he was dating a plant and cellphone videos of him singing Muppet-songs.
In just 18 months he went from completely unknown writer and standup outside of the UK, to an Emmy-award winning actor who made a show for Apple with Harrison Ford and famous enough that a three second shot of him became the post-credit stinger of a Marvel Movie.
That's so funny about Rick Astley, I finished school March 1987, my first job was in a factory with BBC Radio 1 on all day, and they played Never going to give you up all day long 7 or 8 times while we were working on the usual chart playlist. We all thought he might be a black singer until he hit Number 1 and was on Top Of the Pops on camera! I can just about enjoy it again after the internet ruined it with Rick Rolled! I've rewatched the whole series 4 times now, and with the benefit of knowing what is coming, you can see from the very start that Nate was ALWAYS a jerk. This isn't something that popped up when he got promoted, being promoted just gave him the authority to express it more.
From episode one.
I only watched it once and never warmed up to Nate. Guess I should credit the actor and writing but not interested in his story.
Same with Roy, and Jamie. And Beard, they're all bad people.
Ted surrounds himself with people who are slightly more Fd up than he is. Its his defense mechanism.
Nate's not a jerk. He's just a man approaching middle age doing a job meant from a young lad, someone who's been emasculated and even bullied by young, fit, rich, good looking footballers for a long time and suddenly he gets a father figure who actually believes in him and gives him a platform to shine
I just think when you've been as insular for as long as Nate has when you suddenly get that attention it can result in someone not socially mature enough to actually be confident without becoming an asshole.
The clues are littered around the first 2 seasons as to what has caused this behavior, some subtle, some not so but in terms of a jerk from the off. No way

Rebecca's Mom saying she was glad she hated her because she'd take her anger over her indifference any day is one of the hardest hitting lines in any show. Because when people truly stop caring about you and they become indifferent... you know it's happening but until they admit it you keep trying and it hurts SO MUCH. Then the very next episode the whole thing with the letter where you said it best... you don't need to know what it said because his eyes told the story... it's absolutely brilliant writing and of course acting. Those two moments get glossed over in far too many reactions. Thanks Funny Medium Gal!

Hates that he can’t crack the code of “the right way to be”. And the only latest example set by the ppl around him has been bullying….before Ted.
He's frustrated and in turn is incredibly frustrating himself.
Insecure and doing all of the things he thinks are expected of him. And when people don't respond the way he thinks they SHOULD respond, he takes that as confirmation of his inadequacy, gets angry and counter-attacks. Ironically creating the bad relationship he only imagined before.
I like his character's journey. I think this type of person is well written. I've known a few people like this. I'm pretty sure they don't even know they're doing it. I have been this person....... and maybe still am from time to time (hopefully less so since I'm aware of it).
Regarding Nate's hair getting more gray, I think they were trying to somewhat make him resemble Jose Mourinho, who is one of the most successful managers of all time that is/was considered a tactical genius. He's a very loud figure that's never been afraid to remark on how great he is, and actually came up with the phrase "park the bus" that Nate said a few episodes ago when he took over after Ted had his panic attack
Akufu sending Sam the jersey with the number 10 on it is especially significant. Ever since Pele (one of the greatest players of all time) wore number 10, the best player on the team generally has the honor of wearing 10.
Not really, 10 is typically worn by a Striker or CAM

Thought on the age differences. Rebecca has been confirmed to be between 47-50 years old. So that's a pretty significant difference. When Rupert came to her office to tell her he was having a baby, she responded that he was nearly 70, so they had their own age difference. In the first season, Keeley lamented that when she was 16, she was dating a 23 yo footballer, and now that she was 30, she was still dating a 23 yo footballer.
For all of the amazing and powerfully-written women on this show, I very much appreciate its deep dive into the world of toxic masculinity, positive and negative male role models, and the ways in which men are "supposed" to act in all kinds of situations. The effects our fathers have on us, whether good or bad, and how we react to and internalize that. Even the twist of learning that Trent basically got himself fired in order to seek out a life with more meaning. It's really just all so powerful. Thank you for helping me relive all of it, even as I currently am in the middle of season 3 🤗 Football is life! Also RIP to both Cindy Clawford and Earl Greyhound.

Soooooo funny to me how Anthony Head's Rupert Mannion is like a giant homage to his character Phil Norton on Howard's way in the 80's. It was only for a few episodes, but the man really knows how to portray an overprivileged a-hole you love to hate
I adore Rebecca's mother. Until now she comes off as aloof and a bit silly but the reality is she is just wise enough to no better half the time. Her advice of "it is more important to be loving than to be right" is so spot on.
I'm starting to realize Nate has the Darth Vader origin story that we should have gotten. He started off an innocent victim, found a great mentor who showed him how to embrace and use his power, but his tragic origins make him unable to maturely handle that power, hating himself for not having more, and eventually succumbing to pettiness and betrayal because he just can't be happy with what he has. When he was weak, he saw everyone as a threat, and that point of view didn't change after Ted empowered him.
Ted didn’t abandon Nate, he promoted him to an equal, made him a coach, made him a diamond dog. But as you say Nate was trying to build a surrogate father out of Ted. Treating someone like a friend and fellow autonomous adult can feel like being ignored in situations like that. But yeah by the end they’ve done a pretty successful job of making Nate effectively loathsome and perhaps irredeemable.
Can’t tell if you haven’t watched s3 or don’t want to spoil her.

I'm going to push back on the "kill them with kindness" a bit: it doesn't work on narcissists. A narcissist *demands* that you treat them nicely, to do anything else makes you either a target or a threat. We actually see this with Akufu and Sam: Sam, being gracious and respectful, turns down Akufu, but Akufu is such a self-absorbed monster that anything that doesn't fit his world view of himself must be mocked or destroyed.
With Rupert, he is so used to everyone doing exactly what he wants, when he wants, and how he wants, it's become a game to him: he gets to show people he's "smarter" than them, but that only happens because people don't push back or take him down a peg. Recall the dart game with Ted: Rupert was reveling thinking that he was toying with Ted, that he was letting Ted get close enough to have hope, but Rupert was drinking in the idea of putting this American in his place, one-upping Rebecca "again", and still getting to do what he wanted with the club. But then Ted, an sweet, unassuming man, pegged Rupert to the *fucking wall* because he saw who Rupert is and what he was trying to do, but could actually do something about it. Ted let Rupert have the lead because he knew the last-second win over Rupert would rock Rupert's self confidence.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if Rupert's purchase of West Ham and the preceding head-hunting of Nate was entirely to hurt Ted over the humiliation he felt at the loss of the dart game. He might very well have been influencing Nate in ways we didn't get to see directly, just shown these little quiet moments of Rupert whispering in Nate's ear.
A regular person would absolutely be affected by even someone who hates them being kind to them, but a narcissist only sees it as the proper order of the universe.
"Killem with Kindness" isn't about winning someone over. It's about controlling yourself and not taking their bait. Reacting in a angry or spiteful way is exactly what they want. They will make you out to be the one with bad behavior. If you just stick to being nice and not respond the way they need you to, you win. Every time.
I think part of what cause Collin to not think he is a strong and capable man is his inability to drive a sports car…. And I will whole heartedly agree with him in that premise. If you can’t drive stick…. You have every right to question if you are capable.
Watching the episode focused on Coach Beard felt exactly like that time I spent a whole day with my most, shall we say, eccentric friend going along with his normal routine.
I've had a few nights out that have gone surreally bizarre. Mostly decades ago now, but a few recently. Like you, the root cause was volatile and eccentric friends.
Those are treasured memories, actually. (Of those I remember, at least.)

This is a series filled with infinite tiny details that help to make up the overall story. You see more of these details on the first pass than any of the other reactors to this series. It is a joy to watch you watch the show. I came out of season two hating what Nate did, but mostly feeling very sorry for his obviously emotionally crippled state. He's a mess.

But I think within these reactions you can see how people don’t necessarily treat him with respect either. We have to remember Nate is from nothing to enormous power and that can be jarring. Once there he is mocked, belittled and treated, to some degree, like Nate was before and within these reactions you really see that.
I've watched this show several times, and it's the first time I caught that joke about Ted "looking like that guy from The Hangover" without his mustache. Jason Sudeikis used to get mistaken for Ed Helms earlier in his career when they were both doing comedy movies at the same time. Ed Helms was more distinct at the time because of The Hangover and The Office.
I love this show so much. It’s not the kind of show that’s normally in my wheelhouse - I’m an action/fantasy/horror/sci-fi guy - but sometimes a little gem comes along that snaps you out of your patterns, and Ted Lasso does that for me. It’s such a great exploration of toxic masculinity and such a great portrayal positive masculinity that it has become a forever favorite for me. So many other creative teams would have chosen to go with dark comedy with this material, but Ted Lasso chose a higher calling and gave us something of true service.
It’s now my list of comedies I’ll skip any other show or movie in my wheelhouse to watch. Right alongside Legally Blonde & Miss Congeniality…
The Breard episode makes more sense when you know that Series 2 was originally set to be 10 episodes and that 2 additional episodes were commissioned after the story arc for the season was set in place. Thus the Christmas episode and Beard after dark were additional episodes outside the original planned series arc.
The emotions hit you. What can you do but feel.
He's not spitting on a mirror. He's spitting on himself, the mirror is just a container. The fact that he was introduced in the first episode kicking around poop showed all that was needed to know about his character, he sees himself as a turd.

Nate said in season 1 that his greatest fear is aging. (Silly to me, as I'm on the shady side of fifty - it seems a greater fear should be *NOT* aging).
As his character darkens in season 2, he goes prematurely and completely grey. The writers do a wonderful job of planting little things like that throughout.

you’re one of the few people i’ve seen who picked up on ted’s borderline alcoholic tendencies. i was starting to think i was seeing things because practically no one else mentions it 😅
The writing on this show was fantastic. I think the whole world hated Nate for about 2-3 days when this first aired.
But I eventually calmed my anger and started to look at it more compassionately. It is a very rare show that not only has something serious to say about personal relationships, but then leads you through a complicated one, makes you feel personally involved in that relationship, and then helps you work through those feelings. A rare miracle of a show.
Since you seem to enjoy this show a lot, I recommend The Good Place. Not going to spoil anything, and I strongly recommend not reading up contents. But it doe share some qualities of Ted Lasso, and has excellent writing. Of the two I do prefer TGP, as much as I love Ted Lasso.

First thing I have to say was something my sister pointed out, Sam has FAR too much game for a 21 year old. 😂
Everything with Nate finally came to a head here, his character progression here is very subtle and it took me a while to get a handle on. You're on the money with the observation of him starting as lowest on the totem pole, not only in his responsibilities but in how he was treated by the team early on, and by Jamie especially. He's someone who has been belittled in his professional life and minimized in his family and personal life, (again, fathers is the prominent theme of the season) and this sets him up as a ticking time bomb.
The "motivational" speech Nate does with the various team members in season 1 can be seen in a MUCH different light rewatching it with knowledge of what happens in S2. Nate has just a bit of power and authority in his job, maybe for the first time, and he gets right to belittling the team. It's framed in a positive way, and maybe he fully meant it that way, but it's revealing about his character. His father doesn't seem to be much of an example to him, doesn't seem to pay him mind at all, so what he knows of masculinity he's probably learned from the sport and from the footballers. His understanding and later expression of being a man is to be adversarial, to be dominant, we see that in his treatment of Colin and Will.
And then there's the spitting. We see it depicted twice to make sure it's underlined, but it's the first time in the restaurant bathroom that I think back to. Where he tries out Rebecca's trick of making himself bigger, but he doesn't feel it. What DOES work for him is spitting on his own image, of what he probably sees as the part of himself that is weak. A way to push himself forward and degrade what he sees of the meek and lovable Nate from season 1, so he can "be a man." Because he doesn't know how to express that part of himself in any kind of healthy way.
And that speech in the end. There's SO much of his speech that has nothing to do with Ted. It's like he's having a conversation with a different person, which I believe he is. "You abandoned me. I worked my ass off to get your attention. You should f*ck off to where you belong _with your son._" His father doesn't show him attention or affection, never taught him how to be man in any kind of healthy way, and now Nate is expressing his masculinity in all of the unhealthy ways he's learned from everywhere else.
Love your finishing thoughts and sharing the anger you felt with the loss of your sister. Really hit me with my Dad passing because he didn't tell us he was sick. Was completely blindsided when I found out he was in hospice for a week. Think he didn't want to impose or worry us. I understood and forgave him for it when I had time to think about him trying to protect us kids from the pain and fear he was feeling but wished he understood he didn't have to carry it alone. Good game of Tetris, too.

A lot of people have dissed the next season. I love it a lot. Some fabulous episodes. Sam’s Father dancing, Amsterdam, bicycle lessons, pillow fights and Ted getting the worst news about who his ex wife is seeing.

Hi there! Really enjoy your reactions! You’re so compassionate and always trying to see smth good in all the characters! Very excited for you to hop on season 3, and would be very interested in seeing your characters ranking at the end of the show. Next season will really shake up whatever ranking you have now - some characters will seem less interesting and convincing on their own, while others will climb right on top and steal your heart! At least that is what happened to me.

Since I didn't binge this season, I didn't notice something that you pointed out: that Nate's hair was gradually getting grayer, until that final shot where it's gone almost full gray. Interesting metaphor for his character arc.
Nate journey in the whole series is a wild ride. All of them seem to be on a journey to better people. Not sure how you stop. Lots to enjoy and think about with the show and your reactions. Thanks!
I've heard you mention a few times you don't get what offsides is exactly. I get why it's confusing, but simply put:
Offsides is when a player is behind the last defender (excluding the goalie) before the ball is passed to them.
But if the ball is kicked while the receiving player is still in front of the last defender and then the player runs past the last defender to receive the ball, they are still onside.
So, when Jamie received that pass at the end of the last game while he was behind the last defender, he had started in front of the last defender when it was kicked (in an onside position) and then ran past that defender to receive the pass. So, not offside.

Hope you enjoy season 3. Its a little uneven but has some of the real highlights of the show for me. Sad to be on the verge of the season finale and have no more Ted to look forward to.
Nates breakdown is well executed. If you rewatch the season Ted has no one on one scenes with Nate since season 1. In his mind he has been set aside by his mentor. As a mental health coach I see the damage that poor communication and assumptions can inflict on a psyche all the time and this really resonated with me.
For me the unevenness in Season 3 is among Episodes 1-5. Whereas Episodes 6-11 are all amazing (don't know about 12 yet).
@@Wiley_Coyote I have enjoyed the individual stories and loved the payoffs when they have come but some of the overall narrative seems to have taken a backseat to "issue of the week" storytelling.
I have loved each week but can see the complaints that some of the larger plots have seemed rushed, disjointed and could have been expanded.

I think the mark of great writing is to take something that someone wouldn't normally think that would inspire genuine emotion. The fact that they were able to take "Never Gonna Give You Up" and make it an emotional moment is incredible. Reminds me of the true or secret ending to God of War Ragnarök. They took a child's riddle and almost broke heart with it.
OMG make sure you get tissues close and ready to go for season 3. Especially from like episode 3x06 on. Part of me wishes I could add to the commentary for that episode specifically but I don’t wanna spoil it for ya. The tears aren’t for sadness. More joy like the hugging moment several times and just relation and relief to the moments. Will warn many episodes are pushing an hour in length so may wanna go to 2 per video vs 3

btw Ms. Angela ~ The offside rule is actually simple .. .. The striker(s) have to be completely level with the last defender(s) (not the Goalkeeper) when the ball leaves the feet of the passer .. .. This also holds true for any free-kicks, or corner-kicks .. .. So, even though Jamie 'F*****g' Tartt is wide open when he gets the ball, it doesn't mean he was offside .. .. He just ran by his marker when the pass was made .. .. There, simple as that .. ..

You cant be offside if you receive the ball from a throw-in, a goal kick, or a corner kick. Also you cannot be offside if the pass originates in the goal box (not confused with the penalty box).

I feel really bad for Nate also….. 😢 I always took Nate’s real issue is that deep down, he hates himself. When everyone picked on him, it reinforced that, then as he found acceptance & got praise, it is what he always wanted, but he can’t believe it is real. So he goes ahead & sabotages everything good around him. The more he does, the anger feels good which I don’t think can last… because deep down he still hates himself- prob even more.

There was a saying back in the seventies after China had been closed off for years and years to the west and Nixon was the first to visit and establish relations. Nate definitely isn’t being mean to get attention. I’d recommend watching one of your S1 videos to see how he acts, because his meanness is there is S1 as well, but because he wasn’t in a position of power, he never felt comfortable speaking out. His rudeness is a coping mechanism since his father refused to praise him, and the players constantly mocked him, so he feels horrible about himself and picks out everyone else’s flaws to make himself feel better.

It made him a dead ringer for John Darnielle from the Mountain Goats who is one of my favorite people on the planet.
One great thing about these rewatches is how many call backs there on in season 3 that I didn't realize/remember that they were referencing previous seasons when they happened. Won't specify which one was shown here that stuck out for me but folks who have watched through the latest episode will know which one I'm referring to.
Also, don't know if you've seen it, but the whole punch on the pitch and hug thing between Jamie and Roy is a play on similar circumstances in the movie Major League. Also, I love the minor story arc for Trent Grimm over the first two seasons.

I've never seen it addressed by the show creators but to me there is no way it wasn't intentional, but Nate's suits parallel his insecurity and acknowledgement issues.
When we first see him in a suit it is his father's suit, and it is too big for him. As we saw in his interactions with him, no matter what he did, he felt he never measured up to what his dad wanted. Nothing was enough to get him proper recognition. He never filled that suit.
Then Ted bought him a suit and it fit perfectly. At this point Nate felt happy, recognized. Like he said to Ted, he felt like the most important person in the world by the recognition Ted gave him. At that point, the suit was tailor made for him.
But then, as the 2nd season progressed, that suit started looking too tight for Nate. By now Nate felt he was not getting enough recognition from Ted or anyone else. What he got no longer felt appropriate for him, he felt like he deserved more, which was how he looked too. A man in a suit too small for his size.
Roy is used to feeling like he'll be used up and thrown away. He's much better now than he was at the start of season1, but he's got a long way to go.
One quick point about Nate’s hair.
In season one they make a throw away joke about nate not liking being in the water for long as his fingers get wrinkly, and he is afraid of aging.

He isn’t. Offsides is about when the ball is played (passed) not when it’s received. He could have easily been onsides when the ball was played and simply timed his run well.
Happens all the time, especially with long through balls like this.
If he had been offsides, the VAR would have caught it.

@@douglas2938 First of all, it’s hilarious that we’re arguing about whether a fictional player is offsides in a fictional game. These are arguments only football fans have and I am so here for it.
Secondly, he’s only a couple of strides ahead of Sam and, given that Sam is a midfielder (whose been running box to box all game) and Jamie is a striker (who is probably faster even when they’re both rested) isn’t unrealistic.
Plus, you’re assuming that they both started in the same position and timed their runs for the same exact moment and none of the defenders was keeping them on trying to pull an offsides trap. Having been that defender before, let me tell you, this is exactly what it looks like.
Also, assuming that Sam saw the run, he wouldn’t be trying to keep pace with Jamie because doing so would only bring the defender marking Sam to Jamie. He’d want to keep space so Jamie, the striker, could have a clear shot on goal.

The slow camera emphasized that both Sam and Jamie are trying to shake off their opponents and preparing to make their runs, but when it cuts back to the overview both defenders have fallen way behind and they're both running on the same side rather than trying to stretch the line. If not for the RCB napping on the other side, Sam might have been offside too. 😆
We can't see every defenders' position when the ball is kicked, so the argument is moot.
