My possibly flawed take: I think Nate was always someone who saw life in terms of “pecking order” power dynamics. If you’re strong, you prove that by punching down on those beneath you. In Season 1 he was on the bottom, and accepted bullying and never expected different before Ted. But even then, in moments when he believed he was in the superior power position (see when Ted and Beard first show up on the field and he assumes they don’t have a right to be there) he already defaulted to aggression. He’s been completely consistent. One of the brilliant things about this show is the psychological realism of its characters. Take a kid who has been repeatedly bullied and give them a position of strength and power, and horribly often, they’ll become a bully themselves. To put it another way, Nate hasn’t become a horrible person because of the power he’s been given. The power he’s been given has revealed a deep rooted flaw in how he perceives and relates to the world, which was always present. And depending on how he progresses from here, the revelation of that flaw could be a necessary part of a path towards healing. Or he could double down on it and go full villain. Fingers crossed for the former.

That episode ruined me. I had just had a bad day, so I decided to watch a show as a distraction which ended up ruining me even more. Then I turned to Ted Lasso to cheer myself up... triple gut punch.
Beard After Hours is a weird episode because it was an unplanned one! The writers had already created the entire storyline for the second season, but the studio ended up giving them 2 more episodes than they needed, so they decided to use them to make some more standalone type stories. The first was the Christmas episode, and the second was this one. They really wanted Beard to get an episode all to himself since he’s such a mystery, and the bizarre tone is because the episode is a reference to a movie called After Hours, which is also about a man having a strange, occasionally dark adventure over the course of a single night.
And it was a perfect episode for the enigma that is Beard. Joy, sorry, stress, elation, weirdness and you aren't entirely sure if it is real or not. Aside from the main "After Hours" inspiration, there are a number of other movie references like a Fight Club reference about the apartment fire hoax, Clockwork Orange with the attack from Jamie's dad's crew, the distraction of the lady in red is The Matrix, Romeo + Juliet with the church neon crosses and the club seems to be referencing Trainspotting. Number of other possible ones. There is also plenty of other things to discuss like they symbolism of him continually losing his keys and it breaking when trying to get back in. While shocking for folks who were expecting the Lasso formula, I thought it was stellar and a great out of left field break from the norm.
It has other film references too, for example when they're talking about the lady discovering her flat didn't burn down, they're paraphrasing a similar scene from Fight Club
We also got a meaty reveal in Season 3 that makes a bit of darkness in Beard’s life… sadly appropriate, to put it mildly. But this was a fantastic idea for how to flesh him out after he’s been a side character most of the show.
Damn I forgot how intense the scene with Jamie and his dad was. Small things like Jamie flinching when Roy goes to hug him and the dissociative look Jamie gets in his eye when his dad goes for him just break my heart.
James Tartt, Sr. doesn’t get a lot of screentime, but he’s honestly worse than Rupert Mannion (at least relative to the time he gets), because while they’re both realistically awful the latter is at least kind of the “love to hate” type of character; put him with Ted and we enjoy bringing him down a peg. But when Jamie’s dad comes on-screen, all joy dies and we feel his pain, anxiety, fear… all on full display. But we get some satisfaction in Jamie slugging his father, Coach Beard dragging him out, and then the catharsis of that hug.
This scene guts me every time I watch it. It’s also a good reminder to never be the first person to break a hug - especially a child. As long as the other person is still holding onto you, keep hugging. ❤️🩹
I love how Jamie finally retaliating against his father isn't framed as a feel-good triumph, but rather as something tragic. 😞 Everyone is stunned and Roy recognises that in that moment, Jamie just needed someone - anyone - to be there for him.
Yeah I see a lot of reactors first exclaim in excitment when he punches him.... then they take a second and realise how it would actually feel to have to punch your own father in the face and start acting like they should.
I've heard a lot of people complain about the Beard solo episode, but my favorite thing about it is we finally got to see what Jane was like from HIS eyes. I really appreciated that. Plus, I'll always take more Beard.

I couldn't think of a better way to let us have a view into Beard's existence away from the Lasso lens.
Nate is an extrovert in the original Freudian sense of the term. That is, his motivation is in the approval of other people rather than himself. He is constantly looking for the validation that his father doesn't give him. And he takes that same approach when thrust into the father/authority role himself, being cold and disdainful (and overly critical) to those where he views himself as the father/authority figure. It is indeed an episode about problems fathers cause their sons (but vastly overshadowed by Jamie's and Ted's father problems).
The scene where coach and the guys are in the elevator talking about how good the receptionist is a reference to Fight Club. The music playing in the elevator is from the movie, and they're are talking about how she will feel alive in the next day, the same way Tyler Durden talks about a character after threaten his life.
also, there's the clockwork orange reference whein jame's father and his friends showed up at the alley. Probably there's more, but that's the ones I caught
Rewatching the Man City episode again with your reaction, I'm slightly disappointed that the rest of the team didn't get up and surround Jamie after Roy hugged him. But, since that didn't happen, man, that moment when Roy hugged him was just perfect and I cried just as hard as you did the first time, and with you this time. And then Ted's admission to Dr. Sharon ... whew, those were big moments. As always, counting down the minutes until we get your next set of reactions for this season!
It can be difficult to know what to do if you haven't encountered such an emotionally charged situation before. Remember that they are all supposed to be relatively young players. I think it is revealing to Nate's situation that his surprise wasn't at the disdain Jamie's father showed his son, but rather he was bewildered at the hug Roy gave Jamie. It is indicative of an extreme lack of support from his own father. Which is why he is looking for approval from the father figures in his life, particularly Ted. And why he does not show much compassion to others when he is shoved into the father role himself.
I think the other teammates were in shock at what they’d just seen, and weren’t sure how to respond. Roy, who’s known so much more adversity - partly because he’s older - knew exactly what to do. It’s a gorgeous scene.
WE all needed Roy hugging Jamie. One of the top scenes in loads of top scenes in this fantastic show. I adore Sam and Rebecca, they make a wonderful couple despite the world thinking of reasons not to put them together.
I love the moment at the end of episode 7 you say "We're going to move on. Hopefully the next episode is hillarious, and I can forget about Nate being a complete asshat." Then it immediately goes into the theme song: "🎵Yeah.... might be all that you get 🎶" .... Spot on, editor. Spot on.
"But it's still in there. And I'm afraid of what it's gonna do to you if you just keep it all for yourself." Nate's words to Roy in season 1 about bottling up his anger. It would seem that he hit that issue right on the head because those issues are also his issues. He's never learned to express his negative feelings and so, it's tearing him apart.
I just noticed your Michigan hoodie - - glad for the mitten state representation. I really like how Ted Lasso started as pretty much a simple comedy, but deepened into something more, that, while still funny , is much deeper.
As someone with JD and DDS degrees (terrible choices all around), I can confirm that a phenomenal and cheap resource when you hate every minute of your life is alcohol. Every day I wish I could go back and tell my younger self not to do all the things I've done. Anyway, Ted taking to booze was extremely relatable and something I loved so much when I saw it. Beard After Hours is one of the 2 episodes this season they weren't going to produce along with the Christmas episode, because they didn't advance the plot much, but what they did do was advance the character growth which is just as important. I love the fact that Colin gets his due in season 3.
I believe The Beard After Hours episode is an homage to the 80's movie After Hours (directed by Martin Scorcese). Similar comedy-meets-noir style, similar normal guy wandering thru an underworld of unexpected heroes and villians.

I think with Nate, in the first season he believed he could be better but no one listened, then Ted did and built him up. But in the second season whilst supposedly being equals of the coaching staff they occasionally look down on him or laugh at him. They think it’s in an affectionate way, but for someone like Nate whose ego is fragile it probably felt like a character assassination. It wasn’t but that’s how it felt. This created insecurity and whereas in the past it didn’t matter if he felt insecure now it did and so he reacts badly and lashes out, usually at others who are perceived as weak or have wronged him or both (Will replacing him as kitboy, Colin who bullied him but carries his own baggage). Seeing it back this really comes across now and it makes season 3 even better.
So that Beard episode was written in as an extra episode as Apple wanted 12 episodes whereas they only planned on 10 for the season. (The Christmas one was the other episode) I love your reaction videos !! Keep up the amazing work !

14:04 it is so bizarre to me that they don’t explain why this happens. Therapists need that ten minutes to take notes so they’ll be ready for your next session, get ready for their next patient, and use the loo. For such a mental health-focused show, it’s strange that they’d raise that question and just not answer it.
The hug was so intense. The minute I heard the first notes of Beware of Darkness by George Harrison, I absolutely lost it. Then, Ted’s phone call was a double whammy. I’ve watched the show seven times and I never have a dry eye. Watching your reaction made me ball my eyes out like it was the first time I saw it.
Wouldn't be surprised if it ranked highest for most and least favorite episode. I f-ing loved it but my sister's family were ranting about it. They softened after I talked about it with them and going through a lot of the references, themes and symbolisms, but I think many people do not like when they get something notably different than what they are expecting.

When Ted confesses what happened to his father, I’m reminded of the first season, when his wife is in tears because she’s leaving him. He says, “It’s OK, I’m going to be OK.” Now we know why she was so worried, terrified really. That scene has so more weight on a rewatch.
Good chunk of episodes, this one. I feel a lot of what happens here are the foundations of the show going forward, especially Ted finally warming up to the idea of therapy and Nate continually letting his lesser demons get the better of him. I can’t wait till you round off this season because you deserve to be onto the third and current season’s developments.
The moment w/ Roy and Jaime in Manchester is the absolute pinnacle for me. There's hardly been a better piece of writing and performance ever in television. Absolute master craftmanship by the whole team - writers, actors, everyone.

You might remember that in the first episode of season two the Higgins' were going to watch "The Empire Strikes Back". Sudeikis has explained that he sees the three seasons like Star Wars. And "Empire", the second one, is definitely the dark one. but then there is "Return of The Jedi".
just a reminder that Nate had three bullies at the start of the series, and who knows how long they've been at it before the series starts. Jamie, Isaac, Colin. since Jamie is the biggest talent in the team, and Isaac is a strong personality and captain, that leaves Colin for Nate to exact his revenge from all that time of being bullied. and since bullying is often pathological, it makes sense that Will becomes an easy target alongside Colin too, being his succeeding kitman and all that.

it's not so much the age difference (though it is great), but more that a) Sam is VERY young (had he been 26 or 27, this wouldn't have mattered), and b) the power-dynamic of a boss dating a much younger employee. Neither thing is great on its own, and together they make the whole relationship VERY iffy...
From what I understand, the writers wrote a 10 episode series and then found out they were going to get an extra two episodes. They added the Beard episode and the Christmas episode.
I remember when the episodes got released Friday mornings at midnight pacific, so I would wake up first thing Friday mornings and watch the new episode as soon as I could. I'll never forget it being 6:30 AM local time and I am sobbing in my apt with the one-two punch of the Roy-Jamie hug followed by Ted's revelation about his dad. I almost just had a work from home day because I was so emotionally rocked that morning.
I immediately thought to myself ohhh she broke down seeing the hug and it’s not even the heaviest hitter cuz bam 30 seconds later Ted crushes everyone with his reveal about his dad it’s heartbreaking

The Man City episode was so good I loved to see Mike Dean made a cameo that is who he is and the part of offside it was not offside but they should have checked VAR. "Beard after hours" is my favorite episode complete abstract but a master piece screenplay and the fact Thierry Henry showed up as cameo one of the best footballers

Two things: Beard After Hours is my absolute favorite episode of the first two seasons. From episode 1, Beard was my guy. I loved how he was this rare, sudden less-is-more spice in any given moment. I love that this episode is sort of a pulling back of the curtain. You look at it, it explains almost nothing and then you say, "That's quite enough of that" and close the curtain back up. It's perfect because of precisely how it answers zero questions. The thing I love most about Roy Kent is that even as flawed and angry and crass as he is, he is fundamentally committed to truth and compassion. Even when he is faced with learning life lessons from Jamie Tart -a man he absolutely despises- he hates it with a fury, swears, accepts it and then does the uncomfortable work of self-improvement. Same for hugging Jamie. He hates it more than anything, but he'll do it because it's right.

I think the Coach Beard episode gets a lot of negative flak... but I kinda thinks it is one of the greatest episodes in TL. We know who he is and what happens on just one of those mysterious nights, where he gets to learn so much about life. We have gotten some small tidbits of information about just wild his life can be, through comments in the show, but we have never been shown anything before. He had a full night, probably without sleep (as he is still wearing the same outfit), but he still shows up to the office with coffee and just keep being Beard there without showing the exhausting and eventful night he had.
I love Coach Beard and I love that episode. Long before it aired, I already had a theory that Coach Beard is a "magic man." Like... that magical things just kind of happen to him, and he lives in a reality that's just a bit more... magical than the rest of us. And then that episode proved it. I suspect that every single night in Coach Beard's life is like that night. I mean, just look at the number of times they've deliberately shown him as being sleepy during work, implying that he does a lot of late nights.
Firstly, love the hoodie. About the locker room scene, Jonathan over at Pop Culture Detective made an excellent observation that usually in male driven narratives like this where you have the antagonist, the aggressor, an abusive father in this case, to have him get punched out is typically framed as a victory, or at the very least as some well deserved comeuppance. But here the framing is much more realistic and shown for what it is, as tragic. Jamie and Roy have both developed tremendously as characters throughout the course of the show, in wholly different places by the time we reach this point, so that hug feels especially earned. As you noticed, this season really does focus in heavily on fathers. We can talk about how that figures into Nate as well, but I want to save talking about him until we've seen more of his story.
When I saw the Beard episode I honestly felt the same vibe as an episode from another show, Barry. A complete tonal shift and intentionally weird where it almost feels like a fever dream. Dont think they placed it right but I still appreciate them trying something different, kinda like the Christmas special. And another comment pointed out that those 2 episodes were done after they were given 2 more episodes than they needed for the season
One thing that was really interesting about the Beard episode was the way the club scene hit me. Don't recall the last time I was in a club, well over a decade ago if not two, but the way they captured that scene it made me relive and actually feel the best escapist sensations of it as if I was there with them. Talked to my sister and she had the same reaction and was laughing, "I kinda want to go to a club now!".
I absolutely love the hug between Jamie and Roy. Playing the song "Beware of Darkness" by George Harrison was a great touch. It seemed like Jamie did not want to hit his father, but there's so much you can take before the you reach the tipping point. Roy hugged him for two reasons: wanted to calm him down, and show he finally understands Jamie's odd behavior. The Beard episode and the Christmas episode were the "bonus episodes" and away of the audience to take a little breathier with Season 2's darker tone. Not sure if you realize this, but the episode Beard After Hours is a parody/spoof of the Martin Scorsese film After Hours. Pretty much the same plot only set in England and with Ted Lasso characters. In the Two Aces episode, Ted asked the team for their favorite Scorsese film. I think Beard After Hours is one of the weaker of the episodes, but I appreciate the comic relief nature and how we get to see the pub boys and how Beard likes to spend his nights.

I love how Jamie finally retaliating against his father isn't framed as a feel-good triumph, but rather as something tragic. 😞 Everyone is stunned and Roy recognises that in that moment, Jamie just needed someone - anyone - to be there for him.
Yeah I see a lot of reactors first exclaim in excitment when he punches him.... then they take a second and realise how it would actually feel to have to punch your own father in the face and start acting like they should.
I love how compassionate you are, it's heartwarming. Also I totally didn't just burst into tears when Roy hugged Jamie and you can't prove I did.
I've heard a lot of people complain about the Beard solo episode, but my favorite thing about it is we finally got to see what Jane was like from HIS eyes. I really appreciated that. Plus, I'll always take more Beard.

Nate is an extrovert in the original Freudian sense of the term. That is, his motivation is in the approval of other people rather than himself. He is constantly looking for the validation that his father doesn't give him. And he takes that same approach when thrust into the father/authority role himself, being cold and disdainful (and overly critical) to those where he views himself as the father/authority figure. It is indeed an episode about problems fathers cause their sons (but vastly overshadowed by Jamie's and Ted's father problems).

I don’t know if you noticed but when Roy went to hug Jamie, Jamie flinched/braced when Roy was coming in. He was still in fight or flight mode.
The scene where coach and the guys are in the elevator talking about how good the receptionist is a reference to Fight Club. The music playing in the elevator is from the movie, and they're are talking about how she will feel alive in the next day, the same way Tyler Durden talks about a character after threaten his life.

Rewatching the Man City episode again with your reaction, I'm slightly disappointed that the rest of the team didn't get up and surround Jamie after Roy hugged him. But, since that didn't happen, man, that moment when Roy hugged him was just perfect and I cried just as hard as you did the first time, and with you this time. And then Ted's admission to Dr. Sharon ... whew, those were big moments. As always, counting down the minutes until we get your next set of reactions for this season!
It can be difficult to know what to do if you haven't encountered such an emotionally charged situation before. Remember that they are all supposed to be relatively young players.
I think it is revealing to Nate's situation that his surprise wasn't at the disdain Jamie's father showed his son, but rather he was bewildered at the hug Roy gave Jamie. It is indicative of an extreme lack of support from his own father. Which is why he is looking for approval from the father figures in his life, particularly Ted. And why he does not show much compassion to others when he is shoved into the father role himself.
I think the other teammates were in shock at what they’d just seen, and weren’t sure how to respond. Roy, who’s known so much more adversity - partly because he’s older - knew exactly what to do. It’s a gorgeous scene.

WE all needed Roy hugging Jamie. One of the top scenes in loads of top scenes in this fantastic show. I adore Sam and Rebecca, they make a wonderful couple despite the world thinking of reasons not to put them together.

Nate's words to Roy in season 1 about bottling up his anger. It would seem that he hit that issue right on the head because those issues are also his issues. He's never learned to express his negative feelings and so, it's tearing him apart.

As someone with JD and DDS degrees (terrible choices all around), I can confirm that a phenomenal and cheap resource when you hate every minute of your life is alcohol. Every day I wish I could go back and tell my younger self not to do all the things I've done. Anyway, Ted taking to booze was extremely relatable and something I loved so much when I saw it. Obviously, therapy was a much better tool. Anyway, cheers and thanks for entertaining me!

Beard After Hours is one of the 2 episodes this season they weren't going to produce along with the Christmas episode, because they didn't advance the plot much, but what they did do was advance the character growth which is just as important. I love the fact that Colin gets his due in season 3.

I believe The Beard After Hours episode is an homage to the 80's movie After Hours (directed by Martin Scorcese). Similar comedy-meets-noir style, similar normal guy wandering thru an underworld of unexpected heroes and villians.
Which was based on James Joyce's Ulysses (which was based on the original Odyssey by Homer).
That Roy/Jamie moment was just one of those things. Indescribable. Loved your reaction as usual. I love how much quality commentary is in your videos. They're so fun-spirited and personal that after listening to you talk for 15 minutes, I feel like we just had a conversation. So thanks for that. This show is just one of the all-time greats. (For me, another one of the all-time greats is The Good Place. And I already know you've slipped in some quotes from there so I'm not surprised.) Looking forward to the next installment!
I knew that Roy-Jamie hug was going to get her, in a good way, lol. I teared up over that one. Great scene.
I think with Nate, in the first season he believed he could be better but no one listened, then Ted did and built him up.
But in the second season whilst supposedly being equals of the coaching staff they occasionally look down on him or laugh at him. They think it’s in an affectionate way, but for someone like Nate whose ego is fragile it probably felt like a character assassination. It wasn’t but that’s how it felt.
This created insecurity and whereas in the past it didn’t matter if he felt insecure now it did and so he reacts badly and lashes out, usually at others who are perceived as weak or have wronged him or both (Will replacing him as kitboy, Colin who bullied him but carries his own baggage).
Seeing it back this really comes across now and it makes season 3 even better.
So that Beard episode was written in as an extra episode as Apple wanted 12 episodes whereas they only planned on 10 for the season. (The Christmas one was the other episode) I love your reaction videos !! Keep up the amazing work !

Therapists need that ten minutes to take notes so they’ll be ready for your next session, get ready for their next patient, and use the loo. For such a mental health-focused show, it’s strange that they’d raise that question and just not answer it.
The hug was so intense. The minute I heard the first notes of Beware of Darkness by George Harrison, I absolutely lost it. Then, Ted’s phone call was a double whammy.

Beard After Hours is my favorite episode.
Wouldn't be surprised if it ranked highest for most and least favorite episode. I f-ing loved it but my sister's family were ranting about it. They softened after I talked about it with them and going through a lot of the references, themes and symbolisms, but I think many people do not like when they get something notably different than what they are expecting.

When Ted confesses what happened to his father, I’m reminded of the first season, when his wife is in tears because she’s leaving him. He says, “It’s OK, I’m going to be OK.” Now we know why she was so worried, terrified really. That scene has so more weight on a rewatch.
Good chunk of episodes, this one. I feel a lot of what happens here are the foundations of the show going forward, especially Ted finally warming up to the idea of therapy and Nate continually letting his lesser demons get the better of him. I can’t wait till you round off this season because you deserve to be onto the third and current season’s developments.
The moment w/ Roy and Jaime in Manchester is the absolute pinnacle for me. There's hardly been a better piece of writing and performance ever in television. Absolute master craftmanship by the whole team - writers, actors, everyone.

You might remember that in the first episode of season two the Higgins' were going to watch "The Empire Strikes Back". Sudeikis has explained that he sees the three seasons like Star Wars. And "Empire", the second one, is definitely the dark one. but then there is "Return of The Jedi".
just a reminder that Nate had three bullies at the start of the series, and who knows how long they've been at it before the series starts. Jamie, Isaac, Colin.
since Jamie is the biggest talent in the team, and Isaac is a strong personality and captain, that leaves Colin for Nate to exact his revenge from all that time of being bullied.
and since bullying is often pathological, it makes sense that Will becomes an easy target alongside Colin too, being his succeeding kitman and all that.
The contrast in relationships between Sam with his father and Jamie with his is abysmal. Your reaction to that moment, "the hug" was so heartfelt and understandable.

it's not so much the age difference (though it is great), but more that a) Sam is VERY young (had he been 26 or 27, this wouldn't have mattered), and b) the power-dynamic of a boss dating a much younger employee. Neither thing is great on its own, and together they make the whole relationship VERY iffy...

From what I understand, the writers wrote a 10 episode series and then found out they were going to get an extra two episodes. They added the Beard episode and the Christmas episode.
I remember when the episodes got released Friday mornings at midnight pacific, so I would wake up first thing Friday mornings and watch the new episode as soon as I could. I'll never forget it being 6:30 AM local time and I am sobbing in my apt with the one-two punch of the Roy-Jamie hug followed by Ted's revelation about his dad. I almost just had a work from home day because I was so emotionally rocked that morning.
I immediately thought to myself ohhh she broke down seeing the hug and it’s not even the heaviest hitter cuz bam 30 seconds later Ted crushes everyone with his reveal about his dad it’s heartbreaking

The Man City episode was so good I loved to see Mike Dean made a cameo that is who he is and the part of offside it was not offside but they should have checked VAR. "Beard after hours" is my favorite episode complete abstract but a master piece screenplay and the fact Thierry Henry showed up as cameo one of the best footballers

Two things:
Beard After Hours is my absolute favorite episode of the first two seasons. From episode 1, Beard was my guy. I loved how he was this rare, sudden less-is-more spice in any given moment. I love that this episode is sort of a pulling back of the curtain. You look at it, it explains almost nothing and then you say, "That's quite enough of that" and close the curtain back up. It's perfect because of precisely how it answers zero questions.
The thing I love most about Roy Kent is that even as flawed and angry and crass as he is, he is fundamentally committed to truth and compassion. Even when he is faced with learning life lessons from Jamie Tart -a man he absolutely despises- he hates it with a fury, swears, accepts it and then does the uncomfortable work of self-improvement. Same for hugging Jamie. He hates it more than anything, but he'll do it because it's right.
I always thought “Beard After Hours” is such a weird episode, but then after your reaction I realize it needed there because how heavy previous and next episodes are. This show really has great, thoughtful writing.
I think the Coach Beard episode gets a lot of negative flak... but I kinda thinks it is one of the greatest episodes in TL. We know who he is and what happens on just one of those mysterious nights, where he gets to learn so much about life.
We have gotten some small tidbits of information about just wild his life can be, through comments in the show, but we have never been shown anything before.
He had a full night, probably without sleep (as he is still wearing the same outfit), but he still shows up to the office with coffee and just keep being Beard there without showing the exhausting and eventful night he had.
I love Coach Beard and I love that episode. Long before it aired, I already had a theory that Coach Beard is a "magic man." Like... that magical things just kind of happen to him, and he lives in a reality that's just a bit more... magical than the rest of us. And then that episode proved it. I suspect that every single night in Coach Beard's life is like that night. I mean, just look at the number of times they've deliberately shown him as being sleepy during work, implying that he does a lot of late nights.
Firstly, love the hoodie.
About the locker room scene, Jonathan over at Pop Culture Detective made an excellent observation that usually in male driven narratives like this where you have the antagonist, the aggressor, an abusive father in this case, to have him get punched out is typically framed as a victory, or at the very least as some well deserved comeuppance. But here the framing is much more realistic and shown for what it is, as tragic. Jamie and Roy have both developed tremendously as characters throughout the course of the show, in wholly different places by the time we reach this point, so that hug feels especially earned.
As you noticed, this season really does focus in heavily on fathers. We can talk about how that figures into Nate as well, but I want to save talking about him until we've seen more of his story.

A complete tonal shift and intentionally weird where it almost feels like a fever dream.
Dont think they placed it right but I still appreciate them trying something different, kinda like the Christmas special.
And another comment pointed out that those 2 episodes were done after they were given 2 more episodes than they needed for the season

One thing that was really interesting about the Beard episode was the way the club scene hit me. Don't recall the last time I was in a club, well over a decade ago if not two, but the way they captured that scene it made me relive and actually feel the best escapist sensations of it as if I was there with them. Talked to my sister and she had the same reaction and was laughing, "I kinda want to go to a club now!".

I absolutely love the hug between Jamie and Roy. Playing the song "Beware of Darkness" by George Harrison was a great touch. It seemed like Jamie did not want to hit his father, but there's so much you can take before the you reach the tipping point. Roy hugged him for two reasons: wanted to calm him down, and show he finally understands Jamie's odd behavior.
The Beard episode and the Christmas episode were the "bonus episodes" and away of the audience to take a little breathier with Season 2's darker tone. Not sure if you realize this, but the episode Beard After Hours is a parody/spoof of the Martin Scorsese film After Hours. Pretty much the same plot only set in England and with Ted Lasso characters. In the Two Aces episode, Ted asked the team for their favorite Scorsese film. I think Beard After Hours is one of the weaker of the episodes, but I appreciate the comic relief nature and how we get to see the pub boys and how Beard likes to spend his nights.
I thought no episode would hit as hard as finale of season one. Then Roy hugs Jamie and Ted finally confides in the doc. 😢. Brilliant show.

Your comments about Roy and Keeley's struggles with ALWAYS being around each other do bring up interesting questions about Sam and Rebecca. Not only do they have the age gap and the boss/employee relationship, there's also the "normal" relationship stresses like a potential Roy/Keeley situation.

The title of the next episode hints at a funeral. And when I saw that before starting the beard episode I was worried the entire time that beard was going to die. Glad it wasn’t the case
