NorthRidgeFix did an amazing job fixing my Asus ROG Strix White 4090 that melted due to the Cable Mod adapter. It is working perfectly and Cable Mod covered everything. Yes I didn't have my card for a month but they gave me the option to have my card fixed or buy another one if I could find it. I chose to have it fixed due to the rarity of these cards. Because it’s not an issue if you just plug it in all the way. I’ve built multiple 4090 systems without issue. I mean you would plug something halfway into a wall why do it to your gpu?
@@hivemind8817 on most cases even some big cases you cant fit a 4090 and close the front panel. i think some people are forcing the front panel closed which is bending the cable.

So glad my 4090 had faulty heatsink and RMA took it and had no replecement got my money back, awesome card but burning connector would haunt me everyday.. Now using 7900 xtx with three traditional 8 pins and no worries about it
I was in the market for a new GPU. I went with a Galax 4070, the best GPU I could find with an old style PCIe power connecter, I wouldn't have needed a 4080/90, and I haven't heard of any 4070s drawing enough wattage to melt the HP connecter, but just didn't want to take the chance. This is a really bad design.

Yeah I went with a 7900xtx aswell. It drives my G9 Oled perfectly fine so I have nothing to complain about.
Nvidia needs a class action for this as its not acceptable.
the 3090ti have the same power budget yet nothing happen to them. Stop putting these card in a SFF build pulling and bending the power cable to the extreme to fit in and you will be fine. The SFF popularity boom in the past year is the culprit. The reason why cablemod got caught in all of this is people buying their cable so they can bend and fit their card in the itx form case.
@@delavega92 I get what you're saying but there is no correlation there. The connectors are chugging way too much power for the size of the wire used. They needed to be thicker and more robust to handle the kind of amps they're asking.
@@delavega92 There are to many sources of vibration in any computer for the single clip design to NOT have wiggle out failures. And the connector is rated for current way to close to it's physical limits. It's not just putting cards in tight fitting places ( though enough cases do NOT have room for the clearances these connectors want to show poorly thought through the design is), It's the design itself that lacks sufficient fault tolerances and margins of error.

Thank you for carrying everything to fix our 4090s ourselves in your store! I had some trouble because I was using a 35w soldering iron with a tiny tip, but somehow I managed to fix my card anyway, with quite a lot of help from my hot air station. It's been running hard every day since my repair last month and it still works fine so I'll take that as a win!

Yeah, his soldering is good. Thank god that this was a power adapter issue. Otherwise this would be a no-fix with the customer paying for repair attempt fee without a repair attempt.

This connector is why I bought an AMD 7000 series. No way I was taking the chance of melting AND buying a new PSU to run an Nvidia card.

Lol……….AI is not immune to burning power connectors on a graphics card methinks………so Nvidia should be concerned. It’s a flawed connector that has a wire size incapable of carrying the required power. So it heats up and melts the connector. Pretty basic shit that engineers at Nvidia should have learned on day one of “wire capacity class”.

Remembering huge 8 pin connectors on top videocards, sometimes up to 3 of them stacked in a line and seeing this puny little connector on like 500w gpu is just laughable
Intels newer high-end processors are cooking themselves to death by default too.. Its upsetting seeing the 2 most reliable tech brands have thrown out all the rules regarding stability and reliability in favour of ridiculous speeds no one really needs. Nobody prefers speed over stability/durability, especially at their prices.

The spec of the connector has been redesigned because of the 40 series issues, it's now called 12V-2X6 rather than 12VHPWR. The sensing pins are 0.1mm shorter and the conducting terminals are 0.15mm longer. It is backwards compatible too, so you can get the new spec cables and use them on a 40XX card.
Still a tiny connector for 600W. 10A per Pin with a safety factor of 1.1 is insane.
The 8-pin had 8A and a factor of 1.9, so it was always safe even when under bending load.

NVIDIA will do nothing with this issue. The company's value is right now incredibly high. They pretend as the problem doesn't exist. They will fix it silently with the upcoming generation. In some ways Nvidia has better fans than Apple.
This type of major issue might slow down Nvidia sales on their next release launch of the 5090 series. It's possible that their ridiculous new price tag of up to $2,500 to $3,000 might make all power gamers reconsider buying them as soon as they are available on launch day.

ive had my 3080 rig since i bought it about 2+ maybe 3 years. i never disassembled anything within, and dont have any issues (minus the 11700kf being hot)
I don't own this kind of device but if I did I'd add an "engineered' aluminum heat dissipater and dedicate a fan to blow on it at all times. I'd also put a temperature probe on it to keep it in check on the amount of heat being raised.
Seems that companies WANT your device to fail "after warranty" so you have to buy a new one. This seems to be an ongoing problem.
So, wake up and do your own "blueprinting" on your devices.
AND, keep it clean.
In fact, if you're as good at electronics soldering as Mr. A, you could remove the mod from the board and run a cable for the board to the mod and keep it on the outside where you can make a "cooling box" for it using the aluminum heat dissipater and separate cooling fan.
That way, if anything disastrous happens, you're board is safe from fire.
You could also add on a temperature probe with an alarm set to just under the melting point. For that matter, a temperature cut off switch thermally set.
Isn't it better to FIX the problem yourself with maybe help from someone with better soldering skills than yours maybe?
I see this as a very simple solution and even wonder why no one has come up with a device as I described for sale to make the unit much better and safer.

i must be one of the lucky ones i got a 4090 founders and immediately put a ek waterblock on with liquid metal used the adapter it came with made sure it was seated in all the way in and wasn't stressed being bent too much with the cover and still to this day i can run benchmarks and play games all day and nothing melted
Waterblock doesn't change that it's a power delivery problem. So your liquid cooled GPU is just as susceptible. It's a problem that can pop up any time, so a GPU that seems to run fine still isn't safe.
i bought the cablemod adapter and didnt use it becase it looked crap. i use the original cable and nerver had any problems

It's UV Light to harden/cure solder mask.
I am quality engineer for long time. It is a good case to dig out root cause then find out long term solution. If Northridge change the connector can fix the problem and customer never come back for one more repair. I would think it is process related issue. Flux contamination then user find the burn issue after use for some certain long time. Data analysis is key to improvement quality. Most of my project I always suggest customer select thermal plastic and I can use paste in hole process to prevent flux type issue. If manufacturer use wave machine I always ask them put on a cover to block the spray flux onto pins.
I have a question, what happens if the power cable is soldered directly onto the board pins?, removing the connector first. I know that the possibility of exchange would be lost, but the connector wouldn't melt anymore, right?

Can a connector with longer leads be made and stick through enough to actually solder another connector on in a way to distribute the load better? It would have to be mirrored. The pins are such a weak link in these monster current suckers...

I got 4090 with a different adapter cable for extra length. Ran the card with OC but never had problems with these things.
I wanted to know what oil do we need use for the rubber of desoldering pump .
They need to re-engineer this connector standard to be a tad larger per pin, and with two more pins. and to have more than one clip holding it in. Also the info pins need to be data enabled, spi or c2 or some such so not only can the max power output be available, continuous and peek power can be communicated, and such other data as needed and/or desired. Main power connector to the board should also have a data channel, one that can be used for all the stats and current conditions.
It is, the standard changed.
It's still a tiny connector though.

Or they could just use the 2-3x of the old school 8 pin connectors. The old 295x2 pulled 500 to 700 watts trough two 8 pins they did not catch on fire.
What do you think about the Cablemods direct cables? these ones specifically - CableMod RT-Series Pro ModMesh Black Sleeved Cable, 600mm, 16-Pin 12VHPWR to 3x 8-Pin PCIe, for ASUS/Seasonic PSUs ? I've just brought a 4090 FE And put it straight under water and so far it seems to be running as cool as anything even in gaming, no issues with hotspot or memory temps either and with that cable it's allowing me to run up to 133% power limit which allows up to 600W instead of 450W whereas the official Nvidia cable needed all 4 4 pin cables which I didn't have at the time so was restricted to 450w max. I'm keeping check of the 12VHPR cable end for heat, i've got a thermal camera I can use if needed too.
It works well enough, I have it, I bought the evga variant with 4*8 pins connector, no issues, I also had 90 degree connector v1.0 and the the v1.1 180 degree, they both worked fine, I had to destroy the 1.0 to get a refund, I don't use the 1.1. I just connect the cable straight to the card. Just make sure you connect your cable fully, if you cable manage make sure you don't pull out the connector and don't bend it too much, many people can't follow this simple guidelines, and the connector is not robust as the old 8pin that could accommodate these mistakes.
@@eliadbu Thanks for the info, I'm usually pretty good with managing the cables even though it looks like a rats nest inside my PC as it's literally fully kitted out 7000X with all Corsair fans, rads etc inside of it! I've ran my 12VHPWR cables directly underneath and they come out by the back 4 fans on the side panel side as i've got my reservoir in that area too so it works quite well with the 60cm cable without putting too much strain on the GPU end which I always make sure is plugged in until I can hear and feel it click in to place as well as make sure visually.
Im still rocking my cablemod in the 4090 no issues 👍

I think the only solution at this point is to remove the original power connector on the card and connect a short pigtail that has a quality ATX PSU compatible connector on it directly to the board and to call it a day.
To solder do you use 210 °C solder or mixed with low melt solder? Because is not a god idea to use only low melt solder
The Galax HOF 4090 have two 12vhpwr. Does that make it safer?

Idk if this helps but ive had my 4090 strix since release i have a corsair pwr supply n i only use corsair air sleeved 12v connector and havent had a problem i use to check it once a month but barley do now n it been fine even when over clocked idk if im lucky or just cause i used stock wires n big case
@NorthridgeFix I used to bitcoin mine, there was a miner company called KNC or KNC Miner they made the Titan which I have two sets of still. They required the a 1500W PSU to power them 4 of them, there was 8 units (cubes) a in package. They would raw so much power that either the connector as the PSU or at the miner would melt. The resolution was to use thicker wire, from 18 gage to 16 gage I think, it was a such a long time ago I don't remember thickness but it resolved the issue. I know most of the community says this isn't the issue but from what I see from your fixing that its still an issue likely what I am saying is related in some way but no one wants to accept it.
No, thickness of the wire isnt the problem. The problem is the ability of the connector to handle the current passing through it due to poor mechanical connection methods (pressure and contact area).
i think it would be wise to consider creating a custom soldering tip with exact fit to the connector pins, so you could desolder all the pins at the same time :D
I dont get the initial appeal with these 12vhpwr connectors anyways. Its not like its some fundamentally new connector, like usbc vs microusb, its just the old PCIE plastic connector, but flimsier than the old ones and somehow in some feat of defying physics it is supposed to do 4X the power? I use cards for rendering 24/7, I am considering having wire soldered directly bypassing the connector and terminating in PCIE.
any reason we couldn't 3d print two 8 pin connectors that can be soldered into the 12vh slots that allows for use of the old standard 8pin connectors at the gpu, but lands at the appropriate

you could just splice a 12vh cord into two 8 pin cords, ensuring of course the proper pinout was spliced accordingly

I have an ASUS TUF 4090 I bought the day they came out October 12th 2022 and use it a ton. No signs of anything happening. I've heard there's a revised version of the 12VHPWR plug and wondering if its a good idea to replace it anyway.
Connector is fine, people just cannot plug it properly as these days everyone is doing their own computers. Otherwise they would just RMA card, none of these 4090s is older than 2 years and many of them have extended warranties 3 or 4 years. Not RMA card and send it to repair shop = card damaged by owner or transportation.
I use CableMod 12VHPWR ANGLED ADAPTERS V1.0 180 Degrees and CableMod 12VHPWR cabel with RTX 4080 about 1 year long. They work well and there are no problems, I don't even want to replace them. I have taken it apart about 4 times, but it always fit back together well and snapped together.
Same here I have 4090 with CableMod 90 degree V1.0 adapter checked few times all seems ok just not want to change it. My plan is to buy later new 3.0 PSU where is 90 degree cable is included or extra option made by the PSU company.
4080 is fine, it does not output enough power from what I have heard.

I just swapped to the genuine corsair lead and got rid of the cablemod lead. It wasn't very bendy and i had a bad feeling about it.

I think the only way they can try and prevent this from happening is using a plastic thats max tempeture rating is around 200c( I know that's pretty high but itll prevent this issue) idk how much it would cost to use plastic like Polyamide-imide (Torlon variant)

Watched this video the other day, went to cable mods site, they don't sell a small 90 degree adapter, they sell 12VHPWR cable kits and 12VHPWR PCI-eCABLE.
They sell 6 and 8 pin pci-e connectors a 4 pin atx connector and an 8 pin EPS connector and a 24 pin ATX connector.
They don't sell a small 90 degree 12VHPWR Connector.
Any thoughts?

Why are these cards not being returned to the retailer under warranty? Alex have you had any faulty 4090s sent from the UK?
Because this is not under warranty, its users error/fault nvidia states.
If your in the UK then your covered by Law so you shouldn't have any issues getting your card replaced by whoever sold you the the card.
No questions asked in most of europe.

Didn't want to mess with these adapters, got the Corsair 12+4 cable instead of using the stock cable, my 4090 hasn't melted yet, fingers crossed.

I bought an 90 degree extension cable that has an female 12v on the other end that connects to the male 12v of the cable that comes with my rog 4090 on ebay and its been working no problem on my rog 4090 for almost a year now. Or im lucky or I think people are still not connecting those connectors the right way the those connectors can go in more than people think.

I think the issue is CableMod had bad sourcing, and nVidia gave bad specs to the public about the connector.
CableMod should have changed supply lines to go well beyond specs the second there were signs that the specs were insufficient.
You can get various connectors that are easily twice the ratings of your standard connectors of the type. They should have gotten those. If you really want to go above and beyond you can use a board mounted connector and hard-solder everything. This provides even higher maximum specs. This also allows you to add a heat fuse and other power protection circuitry.

honestly yes. I had this stupid 12 pin connector melt and nearly burn my whole pc down, RTX 4080 Super FE. Connector was fully plugged in and I have photos to prove it. Now running a TUF 7900XTX with triple 6+2’s and it’s been flawless. 7900XT is cheaper and slightly faster than 4070ti Super, you also won’t have to worry about anything melting or driver problems
Melting only happend on 4090, even a 4080 is pulling less than 280w and even less If you undervolt.

You need to make a custom iron attachment just for doing these fast, so many.
I use my 4090 always max undervolted on 0.875mv and use the 90° Seasonic cable with the Seasonic 850W Titanium PSU. I have no worries bevause the hifhest my 4090 ever consumes is just 300 watts.

Like i said, the more power you push through material the more it heats, the issue here is, there's not enough material to carry all that power.
Second, every engineer with his head on the shoulder knows, you have to account for loss and conectors are a loss source, you lose contact area, as a result it acts as if you push 40-50amp into a 1mm wire , it will heat and burn.(exageration intended)
Its clearly a design flaw. Honestly i can't understand why they had so big power connectors before and so tiny ones now, even if the card is pulling more energy than before.
Some cards had 2 big 8-pins adapters and now they squeezed 4 into just 1 connector. This is a recipe to problem.
This is basic electric science, you don't throw so much energy flowing trough a so small adapter, even if everything is right, it would still fail in some cases, cause there's no tolerance for energy to flow trough the connector.
What do you think the long-term risks are for 4080 Super and 4070 Ti Super users?
