Awesome content Austin and your song sounds awesome! To recap, this is what you'll learn in this tutorial: (1) "reverse vocal" riser with reverb and long-tail trick with fade-in (2) duplicate main vocal on stereo track and use auto-tune to pitch copy down an octave, filter out lows/highs and send it to reverb/delay (adds depth) (3) high vocals that widen (track these) and make them really wet, really auto-tuned , widens (adds depth) (4) add vocal-shouts/percussive elements (hits, breaths, "what"); helps with pacing of the song, helps move track along, more organic vs electronic (5) ad-libs (many different ways to effect them: Migos style, crunchy etc.); acts as a space filler, texture and depth and gives energy (6) getting tight harmonies (actually track them), octave above or below, a 3rd or 5th (7) triple-tracking main melody; makes everything sound wider, fuller and crisp (middle, left and right takes). Add characters. ***NOTE: Keep verses minimal and only triple-track the chorus to make it sound bigger*** (8) delay-throw: only have the delay on the words that you want to have the delay on; ***BONUS TIP*** Sometimes main vocal is copied, put a doubler on it and throw a reverb on it 100% wet with a different reverb from the main vocals*** (9) blackbear effect (vocal formanting): using a knob on auto-tune to automate the formant (10) ... and the last tip "the saucy vocal," has to do with his personal choice to stylize in a particular way to match the feel of his song, watch it at 18:45 This was for me... but I'm sure others may find it useful :)
THIS IS THE BEST VOCAL PRODUCT IVE EVER SEEN ON TH-cam! IVE SPENT MONTHS OF LOOKING FOR VIDEOS LIKE THIS!! THE SOUND IS AMAZING ALL THE ELEMENTS, ITS BRILLIANT!!!
Super glad I found this video for two reasons. - This is exactly the guidance and tutorial I’ve been looking for. - This song is fire. It’s really cool to listen to your song after knowing how you built it. Makes studying the sounds a whole different story. Thanks man!!
Your channel is incredible. The content and production quality is great, but you really nail the pacing. Some things go by fast but you don’t miss anything and most importantly you don’t waste any time! These qualities are so rare with this type of content it seems, I really appreciate all the work you put in.
I think the reverse reverb vocal was first popularised by Trance in the late 90s when it started to go mainstream, but it's good to hear it's still used today.
How does this channel exist and how is it not more popular? I found it last week and have been binge watching your videos. I've seen a noticeable improvement in my pop production in that time. Thank you for all the amazing work and information!
I'm not even through the video but I have to leave a comment already because I simply enjoy listening to your explenations that much. In the last few months I watched a lot of TH-cam-Tutorials about music production and studio equipment and today was the first time watching one of yours. It ist just suche a relief listening to your structured explanations, compared to the amount of crappy videos among the internet. You don't talk so damn slow I would want to listen to you in double speed if it wasn't a music tutorial and this is really relaxing. Also you just say what you wanna say instead of spending hours talking about things not being the point right now. Your examples are well-chosen, it is easy to hear what's your point about an example you give in your production and everything you explain about your editing on it and your desicions in the production process is on point, short and easy to understand. Thank you very much for your video. I am sure I will spend hours watching your tutorials 😄
Great tips! As an LA producer, I can say this is exactly what the current hits are doing, even down to the signal chains. Soundtoys’s Alterboy is also super popular for the hi and low vocals for a different color than what autotune gives. Great track too!
Okay, I basically needed exactly that first tip. I searched "vocal effects tips." Tried this video, and you nailed it on tip one. THANK YOU. I make rock music that sounds nothing like this genre, but this was still incredibly helpful to me.
12:17, just another one of those days where I realize that less is more :) I like it a lot better clean, maybe with "some" of the extra stuff. But man, great stuff in the video, many ways to take use of these techniques. Thanks for sharing!
YASS finally someone else using FabFilter Saturn on vocals. I love that plugin so much and use it on all my vocals to varying degrees! Most of FabFilter's stuff is awesome.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was thinking of taking some classes to learn these skills. This is pure Gold. People like you make the world beautiful !
Hi, a lot of useful tips in your video! Thanx. I autoproduce punk/punk pop covers on my channel and I feel your tips are good for my genre too. New subber here!
How you don’t have a shelf full of Grammys yet I don’t know. Legit one of the best mix engineers and producers I’ve heard! Absolutely love your channel! Keep it up 💪🏼
I really like the glide on, I think, the 808/bass? do you have any videos on how to create this? thanks so much for everything you do for us ;-) peace x
Exactly the tips I need to take the next step forward !!! Thank you very much!!! ... your computer has a lot of processing power with so many insert effects. I need a lot of freezing and rendering to do that. Wouldn't it be possible to use more Send-effects? (because you use very often the same effects/settings) ... and something I noticed... Why do you re-open your channel-window so many times? Wouldn't it be better to leave this "always on top" (right-click-menu-option of the windows header)?
please do more detail on the high vocal part! it gave so much dynamic i almost thought you recorded another vocal. love your techniques, and nice song!
Damn man. Local Nashvillian here and new fan of your music. First, your tutorials and tips are awesome I haven’t found another channel like this. You guys really know your shit. 2nd, holy shit you are talented love your music as well. Tory Lanez, Bryson Tiller, Austin Hull... ha. Lastly, could you show your process for vocals or vocal chops you hear in a lot of pop songs where an extreme amount of distortion is applied to the mids and filtered. Best example I can think of is Skrillex using it to turn the vocal chops into a lead or vocals in the background that really project because of this technique. Hope that makes sense.
Could you please show us how to make a ‚moving vocal’ track? You can hear this effect from G-Eazy - Pick me up. His vocals are moving adound like a clock, super cool effect I think. This effect would be awesome for adlips I think. Thanks for your tips, you‘re helping us out a lot. Seriously, thank you. Always listening to you on Spotify 🤟🏼
Woah bro chill.. this song is too nice, been playing it like crazy! Question though, do you recommend mixing while still powered through the DAW or does it not matter? I use GarageBand and when I export my song it doesn’t sound the same as when it’s in the software

I wonder how the song would sound without any processing at all? That would be an interesting comparison!
How could you not have a Grammy!!🔥🔥🔥
Oh Austin, you make it look so easy lol. Following on Spotify, great job!
Yessss!! I've been looking for ways to spice up my vox a bit, thank you thank you 🖤

1 minute in and I've already clicked the like button. Thanks for the awesome tutorial!

I'm not even working towards this style, but I still found these tips so useful. Thank you.
Oh yeahh that reverb trick is awesome. 😁thankyou for this great tutorial. And I really love the song. ❤️
Okay, I basically needed exactly that first tip. I searched "vocal effects tips." Tried this video, and you nailed it on tip one. THANK YOU. I make rock music that sounds nothing like this genre, but this was still incredibly helpful to me.
i think it would be a good idea to sidechain the big big reverb to the lead vocal!
Awesome Tutorial! I'm always looking for great Vocal Production techniques!
I am way too old to judge a book by it's cover, but the second he hit play on that track it blew my mind! That track is fire!
I absolutely love how this last Hook hit. Could you do a video on how to do transitions to have the hook hit great?
12:17, just another one of those days where I realize that less is more :) I like it a lot better clean, maybe with "some" of the extra stuff.
But man, great stuff in the video, many ways to take use of these techniques. Thanks for sharing!
