allin ima artist myself I have a question tho as a artist should I try and make my voice higher than what it is in the studio to show more emotion? Like that’s what everyone tells me just add more emotion but the only way I know how to do that is like I have a in the middle type of voice it’s not all the way deep but it’s also not like light. So vocal wise should I make my voice higher in the studio to add that emotion?
Insomniatic 0206 there's always shit to write about. In another video this guy goes through some Eminem lyrics, one that comes to mind is him talking about how he's tired of wearing the same hat same shirt, just some regular shit. Certainly it can spice things up to exaggerate, but if you're trying to become a rap legend then you gotta have some sort of connection to the audience. Why do people like love songs so much? It's relatable! Others can win the audience by having a profound / interesting story / message. There are many ways you can write, but if it's completely made up then good luck getting to be recognized with the rap legends. But like I said I think exaggeration is always okay, unless it's a biography a book writer probably tries to creatively tell a story, not tell it word for word.
Insomniatic 0206 You guys are both right, since you totally can make up a story, but even a made up story should be relatable. All the mainstream music like Migos, NBA YoungBoy, and whoever else you can think of are rapping about shit that is super simplistic and is only relatable in the sense that when they are talking about diamonds and cars people can relate to wanting it. It’s not meaningful, and the lyrics are actually pure garbage when you read and or listen to them carefully. REAL artists you can hear their passion. Mos Def, Kanye before he was extremely famous, Wu-Tang, and even people like Outkast. You can hear where they are coming from, and you can feel how much they care about the music, and they care less about how much money their music is going to make. When you are a true artist, you choose music over money. It’s easy to rap about diamonds and be flexing about your nonexistent cash and the bitches you don’t got. Those type of lyrics are directed at young kids who think “aww shit, diamonds and money, that shit is so cool! Bitches? Yeah we love bitches.” All that shit is fake. It’s not real.
Can I just say I personally like the fact that you make sure we know your goat levelness and that we don’t know shit, at the beginning of vids. Knockem down and buildem up! Thanks Wayne
I completely agree with all you say. Most of my home studio recording equipment is rather cheap and inexpensive, so preparation and recording technique are priority number one. When dealing with less than adequate equipment, it's got to be as good as it can be from the get go. +1 man!
My extra pair of ears are my neighbours. I got smthing else: CHECK YOUR SONG 1 DAY BEFORE RECORDING. Sometimes the song is not finished 100% (hook, lyrics) or some word or sentence is not correct (meaning). Sometimes you use the same word twice or smthing is no longer current or historical correct. It´s hard to notice that if the whole song is mastered. great video
This video should have no thumbs down, this Man knows what he's talking about!!!! Another tip, is to record a ruff draft, take it home play it a million times and then go back record the song over.
Yes King good advice Even a step further is in the SPIRITUAL Recording your Vocals, because EMOTIONS are Only for a Few Million, but SPIRITUAL RECORDING Is A HIT for billions where Billions of People will Hear You
Best thing I've found for timing is memorizing the lyrics. Once it's memorized, for me, it'll go to basically any tempo. Way easier to find the pocket of the beat.
All great points. The first 2! hit me! and the part where you ask the artist how did it feel as opposed to sound...So true. Great video. Thanks Wavy Wayne. 👍☺️
Will use these tips for sure. I'm working on my first project in almost two years, and I want to take it to the next level. Thanks for the advice bro!!
True to life wavy Wayne, it has to be perfect. Started out this morning finishing up a beat, and decided I would rap it up real quick and finish it within a hour. I ended up not finishing my project 6 hours later, trying to make it sound as professional sounding as possible. Well worth it to because it’s the best one I’ve made so far😎
Im whith u man.... same thinking for 16 years all ready.. thats why i don't have to much beats to send every time someone askme for a beat cause all the good beat are made with the song the way it suppose to be....God Bless u man!!!
I wish I had seen this video before my session, thankfully the producer was super cool and I’m proud of my project. Now I know what to watch out for next time! Thanks a bunch. 🙏🏾
I'm just now getting what I need to record. I have alot of experimenting to do. But when it comes to music man you gotta luv it. Its work unless you luv doing it ! Good video man
This is by far one of the most motivational and helpful videos I've heard in a while. Helped me realise stuff I wallets knew but wasn't paying enough attention to.
im new to recording, been singing for years but stopped about 7 years ago, now i sing like axl rose...not so good, but occasionaly I kill it. I needed to hear this so badly. i keep beating myself up, trying to sing one takes, thinking i just plain suck and need to retake vocal lessons for a good 2 years, but in the meantime, I will record line by line until its perfect. thank you for the confirmation of how its done right and now im motivated again!
going to share this with my vocalists as they prepare for the next record (and great stuff for me to review all the time as well, of course). Great content, main man!
13:00 Right! Sometimes we don't even know how exactly we want to pronounce those words until we hear it recorded. We might think we know but as we record more and more takes (as an artist)...I start to intuitively think "oh that's how it should be"etc. Of course guys like 2Pac, Biggie, 2Chainz, Jay-Z - they know exactly how to pronounce those words with all the nuances BEFORE they start recording. But most of us still might change our opinions after the 5th take. So Yes, it's a great technique to "double" over the latest take you've recorded. THAT way out of 15 takes, you'll have 5 latest - accurate ones, to work with - the ones you can track. They might not have that initial energy but they will be slick. I think what I'm talking about is partially vocal-producing - figuring out the accents, nuances, intonations etc
These tips are so helpful, thank you. I think the hardest part when I sing is putting emotion into it. Even if I hit all the notes and add vibrato and it's pretty, it can get so dull if I don't feel it, especially with slow songs haha. I also feel that memorizing the lyrics helps a lot, even if it's not an obvious change. Sometimes I don't want to because reading it off a paper or my phone when I record is easier but if you remember them then you can focus your energy and voice into making the track sound better overall. Another thing is to record with low volume with the preamp/ gain etc, you can always turn it up later. And sing pretty far away from the mic depending on how loud you sing. The most impoimportant thing is probably tone. I used to think that I could get away with adding more reverb to just make my vocals sound better but it's better to add less and have the track sounding nice from the recording. As far as vocal comping goes, do you guys think it's a good idea to record choruses on a separate track than a verse? Or do the whole song a few times and comp later? It's become more popular in the modern era but I'm still experimenting with recording. Also is it better to record mono and then make it a stereo track later? 💛💛💛
Always coming thru with the professional feeling videos fam! Should do a video showing your gear like camera, mic, different external hardware devices, monitors, interface, desk etc
Question with doubles. Sometimes extremely lyrical verses are harder to do exactly the same each time. Rather than discourse the MC or lose the mood by trying tons of takes Would you suggest copying the original to another track and then adding different fx/plug ins? Or just load more into the single track to make it sound fuller.
Holy Shit Wavy ! These are some of the wisest words I've ever heard on these tutorials especially from a engineer . Usually its all about what they can do . I couldn't agree more with all your tips . Been a professional singer for decades but only a year into Digital recording . So this is priceless to me . Funny as hell also my man . Thank you !

Hey Wayne... thanks for dropping these gems of knowledge on us. Your tutorials are by far the best on TH-cam.. you hit all the key areas and give us plenty of useful information. How can I stop the recording where I want and then go back to recording once I'm happy with everything iv laid so far without adding another track?
Great suggestions man! I love that this list wasn't like every other vocal recording tips out there, ie; Pop filter, noise gate, etc. These are such important foundations to keep in mind when recording vocals and everything else. Glad I found you 👍
