My 3 month Saxophone Progress as an Adult Beginner

  • 3 month Saxophone progress by a complete beginner. I practiced playing the Saxophone for around 300 hours during this time. My progress was mostly self-taught. However I had a few lessons with a teacher.
I am very happy with my Saxophone progress as an adult beginner. In total, I learned 20 actual pieces, not including the exercises. While my progression may seem slow compared to other progress videos on TH-cam. I believe I have laid a good foundation from which to continue.

I played anyway and practiced getting the music in my head out on the keys 6 years into it i can rock out and or melt girls hearts by purely improvising. I cant wait until im at that point with the sax. I never played for others approval i played for me and if other people enjoyed it that was great but hardly my inspiration. That was really spectacular progress, over the first 30 days especially! Though I wouldn't show this to other beginners as an example of "typical" progress they should expect to replicate. 4 hours practice a day (every day...!?) is very intensive, and far beyound what most people (certainly most working age adults with other commitment) would want (or be able) to find the time for. But as a showcase of what can be achieved when a person really throws themselves into something 110% with intensive practice, impressive indeed.

I played the altosax as a teen-ager until I was about 22 then I switched to the flute and after leaving the conservatoir of music I earned my living as a flautist. When I left the orchestre, where I worked as a soloflautist and the Highschool of music where I was teaching for about 30 years, I had an accident with my right shoulder and couldn play the flute any longer. My sweetheart asked why I didn't took up my saxophone again, so now I am back to my old instrument again. It's more fun than I thaught in the beginning so now I play and play and play. Fortunately I have found an exzellent pianoplayer, who also is composer and a bandleader. We have a lot of fun together and have just had our first concert with a lot of good stuf, as exempel " Loverman ", I rember You and so on. So it's never too late.

Love your commitment bro. Get the best embouchure you can, don’t let your fingers fly too far off the keys when you release a note, work on the little things like that right from the get go, or they’ll be a bigger problem later that will stall your progress. Most important thing is do whatever you need to do to keep enjoying your playing. Always make it fun to play. Good luck.

As a pro player .a commercial recording artist, and teacher of well over 50 yrs., I'd say you are doing remarkably well. The key is the desire, and you've got it! Wish I could work with 'ya! One important thing is your gear. I was a tech for 45 yrs., and worked on just about every make of horn there is. Yani is great horn. well balanced scale. I use a Meyer #9 w/#4 VD Java red, and Giggliotti lig. on my '70 King Super 20 myself. I double when i need to on Alto, Soprano, Flute, bass flue, picc. and bassoon when needed.
You've assimilated technique well. I would suggest mapping your horn with a tuner. In order to build a stronger tone, practice long tones with a tuner, listen to ALOT of pro players, eg, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Scott Hamilton, Hank Mobley, Stan Getz, Phil Woods, James Moody,Dave Koz, Sanborn, Art Pepper, Benny Golson, Richie Cole, etc. Pick the ones who's sound you want to emulate. This will help you develop your tonal concept. Also, recording your practice is important! If you listen to yourself with an open, but critical mind you can improve your overall performance markedly
Also, you may want to check out the introductory books on jazz from my good friend, Jamey Aebersold. I did a session w/him last June He's worked with a lot of pros, including James Moody, Woody Shaw, and many others. I would recommend the ii-V7-I method to start, as it will give you the basics on form/structure.
I wish you much success, you have the drive! If you'd like one of my cd's free of chg., just email me your address.
    Regards,
    Gary

This reminds me of when I first started trumpet! I'm a year and a half into playing (self-taught with a bit of help from mentors) and my journey was near identical. Practicing 4 hours everyday and developing bad habits that I'm still correcting. A lot of people say that Adults learn faster (I'm 21), which I don't think is true, you learn faster because you're committed and are willing to put the hours in to study the instrument and practice. I was lucky to find mentors (a pro Jazz trombonist and saxophonist, both colleagues in the same band) who've helped me along the way as well. The thing that feels the best is when my mentors check up on me and whisper under each other's breath "This kid actually sounds good!" That keeps me going.
But the biggest thing that has helped me develop which you mentioned was playing slow pieces which focuses the sound. And listening to a lot of great players of your instrument, so you can formulate a good sound concept in your mind, this is because I realised that 75% of wind playing is mental. If I didn't choose the trumpet, I would have chosen the Tenor Sax as well because I LOVE IT almost as much. Some players I recommend you listen to if you aren't familiar already: Chad LB (has a TH-cam channel full of sax content), Michael Brecker, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane and my favourite, Joe Henderson. Ben Webster, Chad LB and Joe H have big beautiful Tenor tones! Also another big thing that will help the development, is once you have a player whose sound and playing you really like, try to imitate (transcribe) them on recordings by ear. You will feel a deeper connection with the instrument, and you'll begin to sound the way YOU want to sound.
Good luck and keep up the hard-work. I will be too!

I picked up the alto sax 10 years ago at age 57. I was very naive about what I was getting into. I inherited a beautiful horn from my dad and one day I picked it up. Ive had 3 teachers, all wonderful. I go to jazz camp every summer. One of the biggest eye openers was realizing you have to tune every note as you play…whoa!, thats heavy. I love that I have built something for myself and I’ve held myself to a high standard. I convinced myself to enjoy the hard work. saxophone is HARD. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it though….good luck….just jump in. Life is passing by

That's pretty impressive progress. When you do your long tones do it along with a reference note; hearing yourself out of tune is hard when it is just your note but when you do it along with a piano tuning issues are much more obvious. Also, try not to flare your fingers when you aren't pressing a key - as you play faster stuff that is going to start to get in your way.

Very good for three months, I have been playing now for just over 20 years, your sound is good it took me 6 to 8 months to get that good when I first started, keep going, one tip I would pass on is to watch the intonation your mid-range slips a bit to fix it play long notes with a metronome and slow your scale playing down over time you can speed it back up. Keep going and good luck.

Having a really good instrument is important, a cheap instrument will be harder to play. Also, I’d say for a wind instrument it makes sense to get a good teacher to set you on the right path of good technique. Don’t be a cheapskate and try to learn from TH-cam videos.

Excellent! I started playing single reed instruments about 20 years ago and have always struggled with them (probably due to my level of fitness, which isn’t going to improve greatly) - so a month ago I treated myself to an inexpensive EWI - and I’m loving it; played more in the last month than in the last 5 years! Having come from a folk tradition, most of my playing is by ear - but I’m working on it - and now I’m the proud player of an EWI5000 - and it plays like a dream.

Dude!! You are really coming along! You can tell a huge difference from day 1. Just remember that even the professionals struggle with many things. If you keep up what you are doing then you are well on your way! You mentioned several times about your intonation and I still struggle with this. Long tones and using a tuner (I am sure you have that) for at least 15 minutes a day will help this. Warm up and then tune your middle C. Then do your long tones while looking at your tuner. If you do this (not sure if you have) you will know where your tendencies of each note is. I will say that you are truly inspirational and I can't wait to hear more from you!!!
