    I just started teaching myself how to play the saxophone a day ago. Before diving into learning scales, I decided to have my saxophone checked out. It turned out to have some leaks and dirty pads. It’s a second-hand alto saxophone, but it still looks brand new. I can't believe I got such a great deal on a Yamaha alto saxophone - it was very affordable! Unfortunately, I can’t play in my apartment because Japanese apartments aren’t built for musical instruments, so I have to rent a studio each time. This means I can only practice for about 2 hours per session, around 2 days a week. I’ll get my saxophone back on the 28th of this month since the technician is backed up with orders. In the meantime, I printed out all the major scales and am doing some online research. Any advice? Did you start by learning everything in the C Major scale first? I’d really like to get a tenor saxophone someday, but I’ll stick with the alto for now.

Not doubting you at all, but I have 2 kids and a pretty wife so I can't be alone for 3 hours to play, they (all female) need me for something or rather too much! lol

    Actual question - how do you get a clear tone and non-airy sound on saxophone? I’ve been playing for a while and I sound the same as when I began.

    • @Learning2Sax
      @Learning2Sax 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You gotta blow harder. Also the brighter the mouthpiece the less airy sound. Try softer reeds with more open mouthpiece. I use 2.5 and 7* mouthpiece. Hope that helps!

    I'm 14 and I've been playing sax for 5 years and that is really good for 3 months. Playing scales as an exercise is amazing for growth and really helps you get better in the long run. It's good how you use licks with the scales to it will help during solos and other random times when you have to play fast notes

    Love it Bro! I'm thinking of learning Sax, I learnt Guitar at the start of this year and I can play a few instruments. But whenever I played in the local Ochestra I always admired the Saxophonists - I used to play as a Percussionist (Drums and all..). Any tips before I begin and could you possibly suggest a sax for me? I don't really want to buy more than 1 and it would be just for a hobby or to play with some mates. Thanks Bro.

      Thanks! I would recommend a "better sax" or yamaha yas 280. I also started on the Guitar. It was hard, because they are very different instruments. You will need to spend a lot of time on proper air and breathing techniques. But it is very enjoyable when you can play stuff. Good Luck!

    I coldn't tell the difference between the 3 and the IV. I have a metal Ambika 3 and I like its ligature very much because of easy to install reed. If I get a Ambika IV, I would select a hard lubber version instead of a metal as a curiosity of HR sound.

    i have started to learn to play tenor myself. i am about 2 weeks in, give or take depending on how you look at it. but i had 9 years playing trumpet in school and a few years after. the mouth formation ombasure or however its spelled is my issue, keeping my jaw straight, and biting the reed for higher notes. <trumpet tighten lips for higher notes. open fingers on trumpet can be several notes C, G, high C, G. 2 fingers down E, A, ect etc... so that mind set is really messing with me on reed biting.

Now I'm in my sixties and haven't practiced for no less than 40 years. So I'm a beginner myself. But the big difference is the amount of free info from great sax teachers you can easily access nowadays. Of course you don't become a sax sensation overnight, but you learn a lot of tips and tricks to improve your skills.
