I love the Federal Terminal Ascent rounds they turn the 30-06 into a.300 Win Mag absolutely great rounds designed for getting it done at normal ranges and long ranges
Were these domestic or wild cinder blocks? I am planning a cinder block hunt, and it appears that either would be suitable rifles. I was hoping the Win Mag would shoot through more than one black, since wild cinder blocks often travel in packs.
Great Video! Personally, although the 300 win mag is great for a little longer distance, experience has shown me both the 30-06 and 300 win mag commonly shoot the same kill range in hunting (0-400 yards). There's just not enough difference for me to trade my 30-06 for a 300 win mag.
3006 is my main stay. 300 win mag sure has more destructive energy on impact. I unfortunately dont own one. I still love my 3006. And my 308 and....... Yes its love.
I love my 308 and just scored a rpr in 300, ammo is super cheap if you reload, took it out past a mile my first time shooting it super fun! Took it hunting and it did suck hiking around with a 20+lb rifle lol
I hit a doe with a 300 win mag at somewhere around 250 yards broadside, dust flew up on a hill behind her about another 200 yards away, she dropped immediately.
Again, 300 win mag, not a lot of penetration, but just total obliteration! Man..powerful! Thanks for the video buddy!! Have a good weekend!! WHO TEE WHO!!!
For this to be a valid test, you need to use 180 grain military solids in both cartridges. Another choice is 220 grain solids. In this sort of test, softs will break up in the first cinderblock as demonstrated in your own video.
400 yards and closer either one will get the job done. One downside is the winmag hits the shoulder with like 30 percent more recoil. Its a fine round but there’s just something special and iconic about the .30-06. Rifles can be more convenient in 30-06 Springfield because performance can be maximized in 22- to 24-inch barrels while the bigger magnums require longer, heavier barrels of 26- to 28-inches. The lighter recoil level of the -06 also means lighter weight rifles can be carried on tough hunts involving considerable hiking and climbing.and its why its the shooters choice in more guns. Its been around for years and its not really been supplanted by anything without introducing some negatives in the process.
A quick guess, maybe same penetration but more explosive damage on the entrance hole with the Win Mag. I'll guess clean through block one, stopping before entering block two.
It seems to me, that test was a great example of the Win Sup X controlled expansion. I have no experience with this bullet but it seems to me that it did what it is designed to do. It delivered its energy in the “cavity”.
My ruger 350 legend will shoot around 1in all the ammo I've tested so far really happy, loving your testing you do for us keep up the great content will be watching.

My opinion is the30/06 is the most all around caliber there is. Can load spitzers all the way up to over 200 grain, controllable, can find rounds anywhere, and most importantly it can take down any animal on this continent. Nothing wrong with .308 and .270 at all but my bias leans toward the 30/06.
Steel core 300 would probably go through all of the blocks. It's an absolute beast out to at least 1200 yards, but you need good rounds, a good rifle, an even better scope, solid calculation, and a LOT of practice. 300 winmag will SMOKE 30-06, hands down, all day, every day.
Do test with the heaviest bullet for each caliber. I think you restricted the performance of the 300 to make it a heads up test. I believe the 300 will really shine above the 30-06 if you take both to the limit of store bought ammo.
It's not velocity people. It's bullet construction that will get penetratiob ok ..you don't need 3000 + fps to get through more blocks just a more solid bullet like woodleigh . 2500 fps 240 grain woodleigh solids from an 06 alone will surprise everyone
@@tastethyboot Your wrong ...300 mag with a pooly constructed bullet won't out penetrwate a well constructed 30-06 Bullet They are both the exact same caliber .308

In the slow video it looked like your round hit the top of the 3rd wall as it was skipping out, so I think if you had the second block stacked 2 high you would have recorded a hit on the second just at a different trajectory... Still nice and thanks. Was gonna get a 300 Win Mag but will stick to my 3006 (same difference less kick).
Man I'm a bricklayer and I'm tired of guys using block for ammo testing. They can be fragile until they're filled with rebar and concrete. Better test would be be plywood stacked.
I think it would be awesome to see, what the .300 win mag (or the whole line of high power rifles) does to a large flint stone. Do you have flint nearby? Mailing a box full of flint from Denmark to the US would be impractically expensive, but sort of worth it :)
Now if you did this test using the same Barnes X bullets, I bet that the penetration for both would go into the second cinder block. Concrete is too hard for a standard lead/copper bullet and simply falls apart, thus loosing all its energy.
To compare true penetration you would need to use armor piercing rounds. The cinetic energy on the larger more powerful rounds does funny things to the structure of the bullet. There you go who 2 who hoo, think bro think.
Try some "ballistic" pasta. Needs to be kind of firm, not all mushy leave a little water in ... I see a big mess on the horizon. Which has more stopping power: macaroni, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, elbows, bow-ties... Make a 5 gal bucket from big box store and have at it . Could go full spectrum here with many cartridges; 30-06, 300WM, 45-70, 45ACP, .357..... you get the idea.
You should try to find some fmj's for the 300 win mag an 30-06 to help control the expansion better to see how far they can go next time. Powder puff with win mag lol. Gr8 vid.
Idea: Cement some blocks together to form a wall then shoot it from the side to see what would happen if you tried to shoot through the wall of a building .
I really like watching your videos, I recently just purchased a Savage 30-06/ scope pkg CHEAP! In the box. I take your advice very seriously. Thanks and hi to the family. WHO TEE WHOOOOO 😂😂😂
They're both a .30 The 300 just has a little more energy and I mean just a little. Read ballistic recordings on both. The only big significance between the two is price. The 300 cost about a buck more per round, and a good 300 vs a good 30/06 cost about 1500 more.
With150gr 30 cal bullets the 3006 is 2850 FPS and win mag is 3200 FPS so it has a little more energy, 2400 vs. 2900 foot pounds so 300WM is about 20% stronger.
I know this is old -- but, experimenting with handloading tells me one thing. If you can nail the perfect velocity for a specific type of round it will penetrate. If you are moving so fast, the energy is dumped. The thing about this test is that AT DISTANCE the 300 win will most likely out-penetrate. Essentially, as long as you are within velocity limits of proper terminal performance (usually said on the box, like Nosler Accubonds at 1800 fps) the bigger cartridge allows you to push the distance. The question is always by how much?! Could be 300 yards, could be 30 yards. For hunters, you have to ask yourself - is the recoil worth it if I'm hunting XYZ distance?
Just wondering if you could do a video on 300 win mag soft point damage. On a pork shoulder or ballistic gel with ply wood in front. To show performance.
wow that was impressive... that second one to me was a lot more shredded, 300 win mag !!! I have the same rifle as you in the 300 win mag, with cheaper blocks i did get two with the win mag and one with the 30.06, both rifles Remington 770 and I used core lokt 180 grain but again it was cheaper blocks, love your vids, keep them coming
I hope that you give the dust from the Cinder blocks time to dissipate before approaching the target blocks . Granted you are outdoors ( open air) which is a plus for your lungs . You might want to consider a dust mask on not too windy days.
Same thing as with the 308/30-06 test before: different cinder blocks with different wall thicknesses... Interesting though how even with the thinner wall, the 300wm did not outpenetrate the other cartridge
That was a good comparison using the same grain projectile. However the 300WM having that magnum load behind it caused much more lb ft of energy on impact. Try and increase the 300WM round to at least a 210gr round. One of my experiences in the 300 is lighter projectiles with that magnum load start to break down before impact. I've stepped my loads up to a 210 accubond load and noticed much more bone crushing power than the smaller 180 gr load.
I use 200 grain...read an article from a well versed gun specialist and he had tested all rounds for 300 WM and he came to conclusion 200 grain is the sweet spot for the 300? Since then there has been ALOT of Buller advancement however?
When I go cinder block hunting I will be sure to take the 300 mag. But for deer and elk I will take something else that will kill just as good without the recoil beating the snot out of me. Same goes for the 06. I'm old and paid my dues. You younger types can go ahead and shoulder a mule. Thanks very much for the vid.
I'm planning to hunt elk in Oregon and was trying to decide which of these two I am going with. I think .300 mag but not just because of this test, but because it's flatter shooting
The experiment was pointless because the projectiles were not up to the job. With armor piercing projectiles the win mag would have slightly outperformed the 30-06.
Hey bud I've been wanting to know the difference for a long time how big of a difference does the 300 win mag kick vs the 30-06. I've wanted a 300 my whole life and I can shoot 308 and 30-06 really well. Looking forward to hearing back from you. Thanks. @WHOTEEWHO
@Tracy D i thought the 220 grain bullet was only in 30-06? Unless you mean reloading. Then, yes you can void the manufacturer’s warranty and do as you please.
just out of curiosity, what barrel length were on both rifles..i would think,if the 300 win mag had a 26 inch barrel, like most model 70 Winchester come with standard,i bet the 300 win mag, would of breached the next block...some extra velocity might of helped..both those rifles, did not appear to have barrels longer than 22 inch..at least on the 3006...what length barrel did the 300 have on it?
More proof of why the 300 Win Mag is overkill for ALL N/A game. For all the increased recoil, increased cost of Ammo and general decreased efficiency you get no practical use in it. I now know why a mid 80s production model 70 in Win Mag is still sitting on the used gun rack of my local gun shop.
If u split the first wall of a block it will surely split the other two as well.... Statics..... Just put up single walls not connected to each other to get a more expressive result... Nice vid! Love the 300wm!!
you need to buy a slip-on "Limbsaver" to put on that synthetic stock WinMag.....at least!..... maybe epoxy some mercury rods in the stock also to make it more comfortable to shoot....just a thought for you
Maybe next time put empty bottles in the hollows of the cinder block. It is possible that the round only broke the first one and the shock broke the following walls of the block.
Good job on the comparison. But your previous videos showed 3006 blew that cinder block in pieces as well. You bet the 300 win mag got more bang but the 3006 is not far behind. Now compare that 300 win with a 7mm rem mag. Awesome videos by the way.
A 180 grain 7mm would have better sectional density than the 30 cal 180 grain, however the experiment was pointless without using armor piercing projectiles.

Dsdcain a fmj from a 30-06 would most likely penetrate minimum 2 full blocks and the 300 will do 1/4 more penetration with a fmj. That’s my estimate

Anyway you can try this with M2AP loaded in both brass cases?
Arguably the best two rounds in existence to take down any living mammal in North America.
Yup! Thanks for watching!
.270 *caugh*
I had to revisit this. I still want a 300 mag, but the 3006 has so many different loads...
Yeah, woiuld be a better test if the blobks were filled first...or for lack of better, would it go into a foundation wall.
If u split the first wall of a block it will surely split the other two as well.... Statics.....
Just put up single walls not connected to each other to get a more expressive result...
Nice vid! Love the 300wm!!
I love it too! Thanks for watching!
What are your thoughts on Ron Spomer and the 30-06
Gonna have to be more specific. Ron Spomer is a friend of mine.
Great Video,In the future it wouldn't hurt to get you a black magic Marker and draw a target on your cinder blocks.
If you can get one try a 35 whelen against that 300wm you will be amazed at the energy dump of the 35.
Thanks Dan
I need Who-Tee-Who to say...."propane and propane accessories"
Dangit bobby
The.300 WinMag told that block to GET THE HECK OUT OF HERE!
Good video, can you do a video on 308 Win vs 30-06 vs 300 Win vs 338 lapua mag vs 338 Win mag please?? Thank you for the video 👍🏻
Maybe we should throw the 300 RUM in there or did you already do that round in another video ?
Good idea
Do you have anything on 7-08 remington caliber?
Nope. That has been requested a lot here lately
When you need to demo a cinder block wall use 300 Win Mag!
💪💪absolutely
Major deposit of energy in the 300 win mag and that is what brings down game Pure shocking power!!!
💪💪
Interesting not exactly what one would expect. would like to see your comparisons using ballistic gel
Good idea
You need to try rounds with Nosler Partition bullets.
you need to buy a slip-on "Limbsaver" to put on that synthetic stock WinMag.....at least!..... maybe epoxy some mercury rods in the stock also to make it more comfortable to shoot....just a thought for you
Thanks Jay
Maybe next time put empty bottles in the hollows of the cinder block. It is possible that the round only broke the first one and the shock broke the following walls of the block.
Good idea
Que the creedmoor fans and i quote “ when cinder blocks start to attack us we better buy a 300 win mag”
💪💪💥💥💥
Good job on the comparison. But your previous videos showed 3006 blew that cinder block in pieces as well. You bet the 300 win mag got more bang but the 3006 is not far behind. Now compare that 300 win with a 7mm rem mag. Awesome videos by the way.
Good idea. Thanks for watching Alex!
A 180 grain 7mm would have better sectional density than the 30 cal 180 grain, however the experiment was pointless without using armor piercing projectiles.
