    Many years ago I bought my 7mm Rem Mag then researched ballistics. In my Speer book the only rifle to outperform the 7 for range and drop was the 300. I would guess today the modern calibers may do better but only bigger magnums. Nice video. Love my 7s . I also had a 7mm WSM and 7mm08. Like 'em all.

    If you want to see both guns penetrate more blocks, move away about 150 yards. The bullets at close range are exploding with no penetration.

      I have shot deer broadside through the ribs at 25-35 yards with a 7mm Mag and the bullet, save perhaps some small fragments, did not exit. Makes entry holes big enough to put your hand in, although the shattered ribs tend to be sharp. At several hundred yards, perhaps 600-800, it will blow right through and exit. Kills them all the same, but velocity and bullet design really determines what happens on impact.

    • @ian8762
      @ian8762 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G53X0Y0Z0 and you’ll have a lot more velocity at 600-800 yds than at 30.

      Are you guys stupid? Velocity is lost over distance, not the other way around

    • @mikemellon80
      @mikemellon80 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Ian McSweet the second the bullet leaves the barrel it looses velocity. It’s impossible for the bullet to have any where near the velocity at 600 yards that it has at the muzzle. Muzzle velocity is always the fastest. That being said. Bullets can perform better at lower velocity vs higher. But not usually at 600-700 yards. They can perform better at 150 yards vs 30 yards

  • @david834
    @david834 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Its probably been said before but bullet choice makes a big difference. Barnes Triple Shocks, X-bullets, Nosler partitions, or other solid/semi solid bullets would have resulted in greater penetration.

    • @danielbretall2236
      @danielbretall2236 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, but if you're shooting a 120-160 pound white tail, thats exactly the kind of explosive energy you want, without excessive penetration. If it was a 600Lbs feral hog with 5" tusks, THEN you want those solids.

      The north American cinder block, and its cousin the concrete block are usually found in more urban areas, making hunting them a challenge. Rarely seen in their natural state, they prefer to camouflage themselves with different color and textures, blending in with their surroundings, making them very elusive. With less meat on them than rats, they seem to be hunted for their more nuisance and destructive nature. Good hunting.

    • @paulhomsy2751
      @paulhomsy2751 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you more than likely would not have similar results. The 150 grains .30 caliber has a lower sectional density than the same weight bullet in 7mm and less ability to penetrate and retain its weight. The test conducted in this video is accurate in the sense that it compares "apples to apples". Similar bullets sharing the same form factor in different calibers.

  • @caryhiatt1599

    I just wanna know why you wouldn’t use the tried and true best hunting round for 7mm rem mag at 160 grain? I haven’t watched the results but and extra 30 grains is pretty unfair. I have noticed this in a couple other videos on other rounds too. Why not use as close as you can comparable ammo? Oh and if you didn’t notice, I chose a 7mm over the win mag a long time ago.

    If you are comparing them:
    1) both 7mm and 300 bullets should be the same weight.
    2) different brands should also be compared.
    3) hunting rounds are not meant to penetrate, you should use equal grain, full metal jacket.
    4) measuring the energy on impact would be more informative.
    5) measuring at say 100yd, 200yd, maybe 500 yd, would be interesting.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The .303 has 95% of the power of the .308 Winchester, so it is no slouch as a cartridge for medium game such as white-tail deer. It's probably a bit light for the largest and most-dangerous game in North America, such as the largest moose, elk or brown/grizzly bear. Most game guides in Alaska wouldn't hunt those with anything smaller than a 30-06, and most want something with even more thump than that, such as a 300 WM, 300 H&H, 338 Win-Mag, or even 375 H&H. Don't get me wrong - a rifle in .303 is certainly better than nothing even with the biggest and most-dangerous game, but shot-placement had better be good. A wounded and badly-ticked off bear can ruin your day...

  • @artsmith103

    Winchester SuperX for 7mmMag comes in 175 gr. That would have been better. Plus the strength of the 7mmMag is 160-180 grain. 150gr is under sized for the 7mmMag.

      @@BamaShinesDistillery The mass of the bullet affects the SD which affects the BC. So for better performance in the 2nd half of a bulllet's range, it's better to use somewhat heavier bullets. That small of bullet would be effective in 0.243-0.270 depending on the intended range.
      But if someone inherited a bigger rifle and down sizes the cartridge to match the environment, then the simple academics aren't the only answer.

    In this and some other videos the rifle barrels are angled down. Thus the projectile isn’t contacting the block straight on reducing energy transfer it also deflects the bullet. I expect these differences to be relatively small but sometimes small things make big differences. Try hitting a golf ball straight.
    Nonetheless, I enjoy the comparison of different ammunition.

    The video (even slow-mo) does NOT clearly show that three walls were penetrated - the dust obscures what actually happens. My point is, both bullets probably penetrated the first two walls, but due to the shock-wave induced into the block itself at the 1st and 2nd wall penetration events, the shock wave traveling faster than the remnant of the bullet, coupled with the relaxed strength of the block (now damaged; less structural integrity) is probably what finished splitting the blocks in half, i.e., the third wall.
    To prove one way or the other, conduct the experiment again this time without the 4th block, and place a camera over/above the 3rd wall so as to witness an actual impact event by the bullet (versus spawl from wall #2, or shock induced fracture as I surmise).
    Still, a great demonstration of the power of both cartridges!

    Were the bullets exactly the same, some bullet designs are better for penetration and some for expansion. What counts more in kill power would be how much energy in foot pounds of impact do these rounds have at 100 yards out to 500 yards. Of course without good shot placement penetration does not matter that much.

    300 win with a 200 grain nosler partitions going 2900 fps is more devastating than anything the 7mm magnum can do. I have both calibers and 160 grain or 175 grain out of a 7mm mag are great at getting the job done, but my 300 win with those bullets does it better at all ranges. I would much rather have my 300 win in the Yukon backcountry where certain critters think a rifle shot is a dinner bell. Not saying the 7mm could not protect me, however I would rather have that heavy 30 with me.
