I kinda always thought of the space suit/diving suit inconsistency as a matter of the simple concept of: Comfort, and energy conservation. Could a character that has been shown to do it survive in space without a suit? Perhaps/yes/probably. Would it be comfortable for them when they could toss on a protective suit, and not have to bother with all of that when there is no real reason or gain for it? Plus to hang out in space probably does take more effort than say hanging out on the surface of a habitable planet, so I dare say it thus makes logical sense to, if the option is there: Toss on a space suit when in outer space. It's more comfy, and it saves you energy. As a bonus point: Even superpowered individuals are probably not keen to just be in outer space with no protection on a whim because of all the dangers that come with being out there, so if they have the option, they probably don't feel like taking the risk if potential for alternative options exist.
John's blue energy thing was likely density manipulation shifting to higher density. I think he did the same thing to dive through a plane in The Savage Time. Unlike shapeshifting into a superdense stone, which seems to have... startup and end lag, to use gaming terms, increasing his density via the blue thing also allows him to actually move. I assume the stone is more dense and invulnerable, but less practical.
Yeah it's hard to draw someone going _more opaque_ than normal I seem to remember the guy in Mutant X with that power would turn sorta rocky when he became more dense? It's a difficult power to illustrate without a little expositional text box
@@KairuHakubi I guess a more obvious visual change would be to make him look buffer, to imply he's squeezing his muscles as hard as he can to harden them, but that would need a lineart change, so the blue glowy thing is more practical from an animation perspective.
@@yocapo32 Oh yeah I suppose if it's a biological power, it could be represented by flexing. kinda like Gurd's time-stop power requiring him to hold his breath.

Pretty enjoyable video. Definitely grew up on DC and always found MM interesting and both over powered and underrated which made him even more interesting to me. Again great video.
I think he was wearing the suit not because he needed oxygen, but because space is to harsh of an environment for this Martian manhunter. There’s radiation, pressure, and the freezing temperature of space. Even if he could survive all of that, he might of just needed to wear it because of the communication radios, even though he could’ve just talked using telepathy, but this version of MM doesn’t use his telepathy as a main source of communication. He uses his telepathy more as a locator, and an interrogation tool.
I mean, you could count down his powers to just psychic abilities and shapeshifting to explain all of his powers. It's not that he can fly, he just uses telekinesis to levitate and "fly". He doesn't have speed and super strenght, he just alters his density so that he can move lighter and faster, and then just harden his fists to deal the blow, and so on.
theory about the blue glow It goes under the category of density shifting, as the laser would have penetrated john and hit batman he increased his density to block the laser.
Being a scientist IS A SUPERPOWER in comics. Ask tony stark, hank pym, T-challa (he dropped thanos with a device he made on the spot), doctor doom, or the almighty Reed Richards who can accomplish some almost doctor strange like powers when given the time, like dimensional travel, time travel, extreme weapon production, etc.
Only kind of a scientist here, but combustion only requires a fuel source and an oxidizer (which may not necessarily be gaseous oxygen per se). Certain non-oxygen elements, e.g. the halogens, or compounds that also strip electrons off from the fuel, thus oxidizing it, can be oxidizers. Oxidizers can be semi-solid in form and premixed with the fuel such that, when brought to ignition temperature, will be capable of the chemical process of combustion even in the absence of gaseous oxygen. This is pretty much how many explosives work. What's key is the exothermic reaction releasing those normal combustion byproducts like water and CO2, or whatever the oxidized fuel result may be.
Can I just say, MM is NOT weak against fire. It is a phobia. He is scared of it. So in the Justice League animated show he shouldn't physically get hurt by it. But I still love the video cause Martian Manhunter is my favourite hero ever.
I remember reading about the history of Shazam a.k.a Captain Marvel and how DC pretty much destroyed the company that made him because at one point his popularity surpassed that of superman's which was a big threat to the company. I remember seeing a side comment saying, "it's similar to how they shackled the Martian Man-hunter because he's more powerful than superman. At the time I didn't understand (or even know who Martian man-hunter was) but now I do. Superman is their flagship hero, he is the symbol of DC comics, having a hero that out shines him in every aspect would be bad for the company.
Isn't martian Manhunter part of DC comics... People will still remember superman but it would be more money for the company to hwvr heroes as popular as Superman
Perhaps the reason why MM has a space suit in “In Blackest Night” is to feel the same and indifferent to the rest of the members. It’s weird seeing Superman have a space suit, but MM just standing there without any protective gear.
I think telepathic sense with GL maybe also has to do with how much he's connected to the person. He doesn't know Question very well but GL he's known since the first episode.
6:43 it's almost ilogic. The significant factor is.. because Mars's gravity is lighter than Earth's gravity. So.. if Martians come to earth, their weight increased. How is it possible to have super speed when you gain weight? Other factor.. Earth's atmospheric pressure is greater than Mars' atmospheric pressure. So it should be.. Martians will feel turbulence in every move.
I like to think Green Martians are highly flammable. J'onn seems capable of breathing underwater except for when his powers were disabled by that helmet thingy, so it might have been his shape-changing powers allowing him to breathe underwater like Aquaman. Mars is shown in flashbacks thousands of years ago with buildings & plant life, but the way we know it in modern times. Space suits don't just give you oxygen, but keep you pressurized and cool, because the vacuum of space is the perfect insulator. Combine that with body heat and exposure to sunlight and J'onn might explode unless maybe he was constantly invisible and schwooping while in space or something, but I'm not a scientist.
5:30. Lobo in STAS literally TALKS in the vacuum of space, which means he must be breathing. Unless he's some kind of telepath and only make it look like he's talking to mess with Superman, but that's doubtful.
I imagine the blue aura manifests when he is under stress/fear, as it seems to only happen when he is an extremely dangerous situation. Getting shot point blank, trying to defend a teammate against multiple lasers, and especially fighting Doomsday are terrifying and stressful situations. I would phrase it as an unconscious defense mechanism that increases his durability slightly, hence why it still does damage, but it doesn't go right through him. Sort of like a weak psionic barrier basically. Just my observation though.
I really like this video, gives you a really specific picture of what the character can do. And this is from a guy who's watched JL tons of times. It's just tough to put it all together in your head like this with so much other information coming at you.
fun fact: "manhunter" was a common name for detective back when J'onn J'onzz, our beloved Martian Manhunter, was first created. Thus meaning, J'onn was intended to be a sort of Batman-esque Detective with all the powers of, and even more so, of Superman! And yet, as time has gone on, he's almost come to embody the modern connotation of Manhunter- though, with his morals all the way intact
Its funny as a kid i always remembered jonn and superman being super weak in justice league but rewatching he was still very powerful but the writers just nerfed them so the story wouldn't end in 2 seconds.
J'onn was so nerfed in JLU that him getting his ass kicked became a running joke when I was rewatching with my roommate recently "J'onn's down, time for act 2"
Based on my understanding of Justice League and JLU, J'onn has 7 main powers 1. Super strength: can lift incredible weights and break tough objects 2. Super durability: he is more resistant to damage than normal humans 3. Flight: he can make himself float as well as propel himself at incredible speeds 4. Telepathy: he can read and influence the minds of others 5. Shape shifting: he can change his size, shape, color and appearance in a variety of ways 6. Density shifting: he can alter his density. By decreasing his density he can either turn into a gas or become outright intangible. By increasing his density he can boost his strength and durability (blue thing) or turn into a stone-like form 7. Longevity/Immortality: he is hundreds of years old. He either ages very slow or doesn't age at all He has a few other super powers (like you mentioned him fixing his body after he was ripped in half) but I think these are his main powers
Being able to find GL across vast distances through space might be an ability you'd want to have from a Super Hero with 'Manhunter' in his name. Heat Vision wouldn't bother a being with an aversion to flame- he's afraid of open flame, not temperature or heat. As far as wearing a suit in space, that could more as a protective measure against the numerous and various types of deadly radiation in space. I've always been a fan of the Martian and found myself making a list of his powers/weaknesses back in 8th or 9th grade (back in '81-'83) just like the one you're presenting in this video. Of course, I had to pour through every issue/back-issue of Justice League (or an anthology series) I could find since this was decades before he made an animated appearance!
Great video and analysis. It's conceivable Mars had a denser atmosphere ages ago. The green Martian civilization is supposed to have been eradicated centuries or millennia (iir?) prior to the start of the series. Otoh, flashbacks appear to depict J'onn breathing semi-normally after whatever the cataclysm was the white Martians unleashed.
I think the reason he can survive in water but not in space is because he just requires O2 which is found in our air and in water (H20). Meaning his body probably can make a chemical reaction that can separate the O2 from the H in the a water molecule. Meanwhile space is just space. It has little to no gases.
I think the blue thing is him expanding his bio electric aura like how superman was able to in superman all-star in fact the effects and color are basically the exact same
We see him use his "blue force field thing" a couple of times(ie, when he's using it against the jet transports in "The Savage Time Part III"), and I think it's supposed to augment his physical strength/density, making him harder to harm. True, the White Martian's weapons can still hurt, but he gets right back up in under a minute.
He just forces others to think that he have those powers. Friends, enemies... everyone is under his mind-control. Thanks that he... forces everyone to think that he is good.
I suspect the blue thing is jhon using his phase shifting to dual split his form into a hyper dense underform and a highly energetic plasma overform , which can be used to deflect energy or augment his strength.
Well the DCAU definitely nerfed him especially in the first two seasons of JL. As a kid I remembered him as the guy who always gets a huge headache whenever he uses his telepathy (memory’s a bit hazy but I remember the scene from starcrossed the most) only to later earn how powerful he was. Looking back the closest he’s shown to be at the strength he usually is was from Destroyer in China.
I mean, it makes sense that he'd get a headache from reading a few hundred thousand people's minds after a couple centuries of complete isolation. Guy's a bit rusty.
The blue forcefield is him becoming more dense: they just forget he has it because writing lol. I believe his stone form is simply the densest he can go, and he probably doesn't use it much since he's immobile in that form. Him being gaseous is just more shapeshifting. And the electric rod thing that disrupted his phasing can be explained as 'super tech' since it was made by the Ultra Humanite who is a genius. I doubt it used regular electricity, same as Vandal Savage's glove thing and the alien spaceship.
You are such a DORK Watchtower Database! I love it! Now you made me want to see more scientists in fiction who aren't total lameos. But I consider J'ohnn turning into stone (that looked more like metal to me at 13:09) the same as density shifting, id est schwooping. If he can shift his density to be lighter in order to phase through solid objects and shift back to his original density, then logically he could become denser. Or maybe its still shape-changing, having malleable cells that are like protoplasm which increase in or decrease in density at will.
@@dcauwatchtower I am deeply moved, trully. Also, you watched that rad episode on VHS? Lucky, I had to wait for the rerun here in Romania, didn't have a VCR.
Now I want a DCU Pokémon Type chart ! Batman = Dark / Fighting, John = Psychic and ??? , Superman = Steel / Flying , Static = Electric , Aquaman = Water Swamp Thing = Grass, Hawk Girl = Flying Killer Crock is Water and Rock Type since he is proud of his ability with "Rock Through" but he can also use surf, strength and Bite. Maybe its easier to just give heroes Pokémon Move sets and ignore the type chart a lot have more then two type sets and a lot don't use the skills that there type seems to go along with. Also I would now like to see a list of best and worst scientists in the DCAU
I am glad in Supergirl series he is gonna get amps. Because he is very underrated from power side in show. I remember times when he curbstomped red kryptonite Kara, ripped Indigo into half, one punched white martian and gave big troubles to Reign. I hope in crisis on earths he will show his true potential
5:26 Technically you can breath in space. Despite the common belief space is NOT a perfect vacuum. That is why we can detect / see nebulas that are "concentrated" clouds of gas in space. If you have enough strength to create a vacuum stronger than the vacuum of space in your lungs you will "breath". Another thing is do you know what he actually breaths? You said that mar atmosphere is 0.1% oxygen so it probably means he doesn't need it or very little of it.
Mars’s atmosphere was definitely different in the past. Scientists are pretty sure about that. We can’t just go by what it looks like today. Just how much did it have in the past, I don’t know, but it’s now believed that much of the atmosphere escaped into space. As far as I know, they’re not sure how it became the way it is, but evidence today shows river fossils meaning Mars had water at dome point. There’s no magnetosphere now, but for organic life as we know it, there had to have been one.
J'oon has potential to matter of his body and mind to a super level or mega level he has used this when he took over the Jokers brain but he nearly lost control he had to be flexible with regards to the Joker but he didn't have a problem with Darkside well at first, he can't abuse his mental powers there are limits it could backfire and his own body will weaken if he is in space for to long the cosmic rays of space can effectively be a deadly even him but he can change his body into a solid state that he can survive in space but that can come at a price to his head and heart like all he has limits but he is evolving all the the time. The lonely Martians he is green and has fantastic powers but many are a mystery?
6:07 the suit might Aswell been for protection against cosmic radiation, or the cold of space, or he simple used the suit, so the rest didn't feel alienated with him floating around unprotected.
In the comic series Kingdom Come they reduced his appearance to a cameo since he was considered the 3rd Superman and would upset the balance of power. Much like Captain Marvel, they completely de-powered him to a fraction of his former self.
It's funny that people accuse Superman of being overpowered when Martian Manhunter is basically Superman but with telepathy, shape-shifting, intangibility, regeneration, and pretty much every power that anyone could want.
It’s possible that Martian Man Hunter breathes a separate gas that’s present in the atmosphere of Mars and Earth. This doesn’t help explain whether he can breath and water but needs a space suit but whatever.
I think the blue force field thing was supposed to be him increasing his density. Like the opposite of the intangibility power. Like what Vision from Marvel comics can do. edit: Never mind, got further into the video. I don't think its increasing density anymore second edit: I do think it was density increasing for Justice Lord J'onn. So overall, maybe blue thing is him increasing his density.
im assuming you thought maybe it wasnt density increasing when other j'onn used it offensively, but increasing your density would also allow you to hit harder with the same velocity. just imagine a balloon hitting you at 5mph and a rock of the same size hitting you at that speed.
@@NTTofMistery Thats the one where I thought it was increasing density. The one that tripped me up is the second time he used it to shield someone. It looked like the aura extended too far. That one might not be increasing density.
The force field was him becoming more dense. I only think this because of what could happen if he did. He wouldn't move as far. Possibly light bending in such a way that it appears blue? I'm not sure on that

Also Static exploited his electricity weakness with the brainiac takeover thing

Super Martian God Super Martian
GOD, I LOVE HOW YOU ANALYZE "EVERYTHING". Great video
Yeah it's hard to draw someone going _more opaque_ than normal
I seem to remember the guy in Mutant X with that power would turn sorta rocky when he became more dense? It's a difficult power to illustrate without a little expositional text box
@@KairuHakubi
I guess a more obvious visual change would be to make him look buffer, to imply he's squeezing his muscles as hard as he can to harden them, but that would need a lineart change, so the blue glowy thing is more practical from an animation perspective.
@@yocapo32 Oh yeah I suppose if it's a biological power, it could be represented by flexing. kinda like Gurd's time-stop power requiring him to hold his breath.
I remember being so hyped when J'Onn came back in that scene along the Great Wall of China, him being a red dragon instead of green one threw me off for sure!
He can also sing.
In Supergirl, J'onn is called Manhunter because on Mars, that is what they called their police force
Ohhhhh, that makes sense!
Their are trees in the backyround of the Mars flashbacks. Clearly it was more habitable and possibly had a significant atmosphere.
Everyone keeps acting like he didn't come from Mars
Yeah . Genius level intelligence is one
Shape changing would literally mean he could change his shape like he could turn into a hexagon if he wants
I always think Martian Manhunter need his own Villains, the Majorty being Psionic like him. He known Psy Judo,Making him Best to Fight Other Psionics.
Good to see you again James!
9:35 very clever, cause it’s J’onn disguised as Superman in that scene
2:20 I totally agree with this
I think telepathic sense with GL maybe also has to do with how much he's connected to the person. He doesn't know Question very well but GL he's known since the first episode.
3:08 That's Shara Isvalda from Monster Hunter
I had always assumed the "glowing blue thing" as a visual way to show when John jacks UP his density - a reverse use of the intangibility power.
"You? Pfft. You're nothing but a scientist"
The blue thing is him making himself more dense that also how he schwoops
As a scientist I can confirm none of this makes any sense it’s a cartoon add that to the list of the things that makes you mad
11:52. Ohhh he did not just go there
Its funny as a kid i always remembered jonn and superman being super weak in justice league but rewatching he was still very powerful but the writers just nerfed them so the story wouldn't end in 2 seconds.
He never uses the blue again cause he found out that shit don't work
That blue aura thing is probably him increasing his density instead instead of phasing like phasing in reverse
Check out our interviews with writer Rich Fogel, he tells us the answer!
What if he doesn't need the space suit to survive, he's just wearing it for the walky-talky aspect since there's no sound in space?
Why would he need a walkie talkie when he's a telepath?
J'onn was so nerfed in JLU that him getting his ass kicked became a running joke when I was rewatching with my roommate recently "J'onn's down, time for act 2"
8:02
Look into my eyes...your soul is tainted with the blood of the innocent, feel their pain!
In general with superheroes it's like they roll the dice and decide whether or not something worked or an attack dealt damage
Based on my understanding of Justice League and JLU, J'onn has 7 main powers
1. Super strength: can lift incredible weights and break tough objects
2. Super durability: he is more resistant to damage than normal humans
3. Flight: he can make himself float as well as propel himself at incredible speeds
4. Telepathy: he can read and influence the minds of others
5. Shape shifting: he can change his size, shape, color and appearance in a variety of ways
6. Density shifting: he can alter his density. By decreasing his density he can either turn into a gas or become outright intangible. By increasing his density he can boost his strength and durability (blue thing) or turn into a stone-like form
7. Longevity/Immortality: he is hundreds of years old. He either ages very slow or doesn't age at all
He has a few other super powers (like you mentioned him fixing his body after he was ripped in half) but I think these are his main powers
The blue thing could always be his visual indicator that he has Increased Density as apposed to his Intangibility.
I think the blue thing is him expanding his bio electric aura like how superman was able to in superman all-star in fact the effects and color are basically the exact same
Check out our interview with Rich Fogel, he explains it!
Check out our interview with Rich Fogel for the answer!
Where did you see White Martians in the show?
@@GabePuratekuta In the two-parter pilot. True, they aren't native Martians, but they're obviously inspired by the White Martians from the comics.
He just forces others to think that he have those powers. Friends, enemies... everyone is under his mind-control. Thanks that he... forces everyone to think that he is good.
I love that word schwooping. That's so schway.
Kontrol Zee your not the only one cursed with knowledge
The "blue thing" is more than likely some kind of psychic barrier, just a guess at a Timm-y "I just thought of this" explanation
I love that James calls this episode boring and contrived but it's one of the most interesting episodes to me 😂
I suspect the blue thing is jhon using his phase shifting to dual split his form into a hyper dense underform and a highly energetic plasma overform , which can be used to deflect energy or augment his strength.
I always thought J'onn just knocked that guy out. He grabs him, does his glowy eyes thing and the guys like "Ok sleepytime"
Hearted for dork part

Maybe its easier to just give heroes Pokémon Move sets and ignore the type chart a lot have more then two type sets and a lot don't use the skills that there type seems to go along with.
Also I would now like to see a list of best and worst scientists in the DCAU
6:13 local scientist and dcau fanboy here. Perhaps maritans need very litte oxgen. Just saying..
He might breathe carbon dioxide, which is abundant on mars
I do wonder where clock king got the martain manhunter name from in universe. Maybe that's the name used on all his merchandise.
Johns weakness to fire isn’t physical but mental
In the comic series Kingdom Come they reduced his appearance to a cameo since he was considered the 3rd Superman and would upset the balance of power. Much like Captain Marvel, they completely de-powered him to a fraction of his former self.
@@navbuoyOh, yeah, his mind got broken for reading the world's population there.
Depends on the version of the character. They've switched it around.
It's funny that people accuse Superman of being overpowered when Martian Manhunter is basically Superman but with telepathy, shape-shifting, intangibility, regeneration, and pretty much every power that anyone could want.
Martian man hunter almost become a super Martian in the first episodes? Lol but he is more powerful than Superman
On Paper Martian Manhunter is the most powerful superhero only beaten by high powered magical users and cosmic users
Who is here after watching Justice League cut 2021
The aura is probably just a part of density shifting just in the reverse of what we usually see, he made himself denser rather than thinner
Everytime i hear someone say "Superman is too OP" im like what about Martian Manhunter he is arguably even more powerful than Superman.
I don't think its increasing density anymore
second edit: I do think it was density increasing for Justice Lord J'onn.
I'm not sure on that
I'm going to think it's safe to assume that JLU MM just has so many powers that even he forgets some of them sometimes.
Well he was sidelined for most of Unlimited sadly
