Lucid Air Road Trip FL To CT Finale: Non-Tesla CCS Charging In The USA Is Horrendous!

  • Join Dave and his pup Bailey on Part 2 of their road trip from Florida to CT where they deal with some horrible charging sessions using the Electrify America Network. While the Lucid Air is proving to be an awesome car, the limitation is the CCS network for road tripping. It is said that in any high end stereo system (audiophile level sound), the system is only as good as it's weakest link. In this example of car plus charging network, the CCS Electrify America network is truly the weakest link on this road trip. Let's hope that things improve over time with the network. Imagine if you were to buy an incredible gas powered car that the dealer tells you that it will be very difficult for you to find good fuel for it while on a road trip. Would you buy it? Unfortunately, that is the situation for all non-Tesla cars at this point in time.

      In Italy/Europe, I am a MY LFP owner, third party charging network is very good indeed...fast chargers, good availability, almost always all working...most of all ionity and Ewiva networks, but they are a joint venture with big car companies like Mercedes, Ford and Volkswagen...and this is proof of quality...of course SuperCharegers are the best for road tripping...I can cross all my country, Italy is relatively small compared to big european countries and of course no match with whole USA, so EV road tripping is easy...as I was saying...I can do 1200km with just 3 charges in SUC or whatever...no pain...very comfortable...hoping to see Lucid models in europe asap!!

    The lucid is a beautiful car, and probably much more efficient than most EVs out there. Even with its super fast charging capability, it’s probably more frustrating to use than that SR Model 3 with its modest charging speed. I also think EA is a scam. It was established to satiate a legal outcome…never intended to provide best customer experience. And, this shows in almost every session. Thanks Dave.

    The next big quetion is: How is the $7 billion federal ev charging infrastructure money going to be spent? We certainly don't need more EA chargers with generation 1 or 2 technology. We need the better, more reliable generation 3-4 like Europe has. Has this question been addressed anywhere?

    I have been using Tesla superchargers in many states, frequently for over 4 years now and not once encountered one that was undergoing a "software upgrade/maintenance". That is the main reason I stay with Tesla and haven't really considered other EVs. I could not deal with the stress of wondering whether you will have enough charge to make it to the next charging station, or wondering even if that station will work or have extremely limited charging ability.

    It’s completely insane to me that you have to call a Lucid rep for a “reset” to fix a totally locked down car. That has to be a button you can press at any time.

    On your next trip, consider from the Delaware Bridge using Rt 301 thru Annapolis all the way down almost to Richmond Va. It bypasses all the backups and tolls around Baltimore/Washington. A nice road even if it's only 2 lanes, with little traffic, and none of the crazy 'bumper car' drivers. We always hit standstill heavy traffic both ways around Quantico Va even with the express lanes.

    We knew Brunswick sucks which could easily be researched on Plug Share. So we skipped it and made sure we could do Pooler, GA to Florence. Obviously, I had a co-pilot to research. Overall, the Lightning has been by far the most consistent charging EV I've owned.

    I would be trying to sell a Lucid by now. It is very apparent that EA does not have a good working model for fast charging. The only way that EV car manufacturers will solve the problem is by either creating their own networks and/or go after EA. It seems Tesla has the true working network. While the Lucid is a beautiful car with huge range, it really does not have the capabilities to do long trips without frustration. It is time for the car manufacturers to solve their problems with EA and any other electric providers or lose the sales.

      @joshuarosen465 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would Tesla want to do that? Their choice is between making pennies on charging or thousands of dollars on each car sold. Until the CCS people get their act together Tesla has a huge advantage over their competitors. They'll put magicdocks in when they are receiving subsidies at new sites but they aren't going to retrofit old sites. Someday in the future when CCS charging is good enough that it's no longer a checkoff item for car buyers Tesla will fully open their network because it won't cost them car sales but who knows when that will be.

      @@joshuarosen465 I partially agree, but charging profits are far greater than pennies with very little work. Remember, Elon said he does not want his charging network to create a moat around his company. When a non-Tesla charges at a Supercharger, all passengers are exposed to a sea of Tesla's and Tesla gets free advertising. Due to short cable length of V3 chargers, I think we will see more magicdocks on V4's. Since owning both a model S and EQS 580, I'm anxious for the rollout.

    Dave, another great video. Please consider the comparative comfort and charging anxiety of the Tesla vs. the Lucid by doing the same road trip from CT to FL in Kathy’s new Y. Firstly, I think it would take fewer stops and shorter duration of the charging stops vs. the Lucid. I also think you would have to spend fewer than 3 nights in a motel. Dave, thank you for reporting. I think the more the CCS car owners tell the dealers and car manufacturers their experiences, such as yourself, the manufacturers will have to assist because their reputations are being pulled into this. If Tesla can do this easily, others too.. No reason for a 6 figure car to take over 1 hour for 80% charge. That is terrible!!!

    I get the reduced or not existence of regen when I charge by Chevy Bolt to 100% , funny thing is that you find out quickly when you are trying to stop using one pedal lol, the Bolt’s brakes are not good . I don’t feel reduction when driving my e-tron but the brakes are awesome. On another note, I went for a road trip from NY to Miami and back using EA stations 95% of the time and I had no issues at all , very thankful for that.

    I don't know how you put up with it. I'd have dropped ccs and gone to tesla after 2 bad sessions. Hopefully, we can look back in 5-10 years and laugh at how bad these sessions were...............

    I haven’t experienced the fluctuations in power on my Mach E when charging at Electrify America. Is this an issue with just your Lucid. Do you see the same problems with other vehicles that are charging at your stops.

    I would like to know if the Tesla superchargers non-teslas can use now would allow a trip from Ct to Fl for a Lucid. Lucid CEO says “it’s just a plug” and will not change to the Tesla standard. Looks like I’m getting a model X.

    Dave I noticed that at a full SOC at 99% (433 stated mile) that my regen feels more like a normal car slowing down if I take my foot off the gas. Until I drop down to 410 stated range then regen seems to work smoother.

    • @mouseandkeyboard554
      @mouseandkeyboard554 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s normal. When the battery is full, regen is reduced because the battery can’t accept a high rate of charge.

    Dave, it is interesting that the Signet surge is regionally specific. I recently road tripped in the IL, IN, KY and TN area and the SK Signet units do not exhibit this behavior. The 350kW units do seem to be power limited. I drive an EV6. If Kyle wants to see the data, I logged it into Rate Your Charge.

    Nice work on the video Dave. Painful seeing you endure these charging woes. As an early adopter of the Model S, I see now the strength of Elon's early pricing strategy. He and his team, rightfully so, seemed to see that the sustainability and success of the company was tied, in part, to the reliability of a charging network. Tesla had its struggles in the beginning. But, having that concept baked into the cost of an early new Model Ss really seemed to be a good tactic. Smart.
    On another thought, not related to the EA charging stations at all; I hope Lucid can work through its supply chain issues. Looks like a really good product.

    We rented a Polestar 2 and drove from Portland to Sanfrancisco and it was a major pain using EA. We'll rent a gas car next time unless there is a Tesla available. My associate drove a rented Model 3 on the same route and used the Tesla charge network and he said it was an easy, no stress experience. He said when he goes EV, will be a Tesla just because of their charge network but still is not a huge fan of the cars or elon.

    However, my wife has had her 2021 VW ID.4 PRO for the past (almost) two years. She has been on numerous road trips, near (read: SF Bay Area) and far (LA, San Diego, North Rim and Zion NP, for example), and uses EA extensively on those trips. She has never (knock on wood!) had the challenges that you and Kyle seem to encounter regularly.
