  • After years of promising it, Tesla is finally starting to open up its Supercharger network to allow non-Tesla EVs to charge. I check out one of the first Supercharger stations with the "Magic Dock" that allows non-Tesla charging less than 24 hours from its opening.
    This video is powered by Qmerit, North America’s leading provider of installation services for EV charging, home energy storage, and other electrification technologies. See how Qmerit is making the energy transition easy for home and business owners: qmerit.com/ev/charge

    3:27 Why is Tesla's "Magic Dock" necessary?
    9:51 I arrive at the Supercharger
    10:33 The cable won't reach!
    12:35 Marques Brownlee helps me get plugged in!
    14:20 I chat with a Luicd Air owner who was charging there also

    I'm a 2022 MYP owner. To me it seems that the R1T, Air, and Lightning all worked on the first attempt. That in itself is stellar. It was really awesome that you got to see three different manufactures (other than Tesla) charging. The cables and be swapped out. The layout of the stalls can be adjusted. Overall the fundamental ground work is super solid for other manufacturers. This is exciting.

    As both a Tesla and non-Tesla EV owner I am happy about them opening up the system. It's just a shame that Ford, GM and others are not yet doing what Tesla is doing. WV pushing it off to Electrify America doesn't really count/work, and we see the mediocre outcome as a result.

    • @kylemccourt663
      @kylemccourt663 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup... already seeing Electrify America chargers not working. On my last road trip I went to a station that only had one of 4 operating and 3 people were waiting. Wound up driving 30 mins back to find another while I was already dangerously low. But I would have lost my day off waiting if didn't make a move or went to the local slow Ford charging station. I knew it was going to be problematic with VW funding Electrify America as penance for Dieselgate. I knew once the chargers started breaking, the support wouldn't be there. Tesla has incentive to keep theirs in working order.

      Here in Europe is more than a year since Tesla started to open the superchargers to other EVs, and I guess that didn't created much problems on the long term, although I'm not a Tesla owner so I can't be sure 😅.
      Also there is to say that especially in Northern Europe non Tesla charging network are well developed, and the fact that some Tesla drivers use non Tesla fast charger (since Tesla use the CCS combo in Europe no adapter is needed) helped reduce the problem compared to what can happen in the USA

      @@francescoboselli6033 Interesting…thanks for the perspective. I don’t understand why the CCS charger handle has to be so large…Tesla’s is small, convenient, and lightweight. Since I have problems with my wrists, it takes me two hands to handle that plug. Not a problem with my Tesla. The “taking up to charging spots” is a big issue for us, though. It might need some understanding and patience between users for a while to sort out parking positions, but iv always enjoyed a chat with other EV owner’s anyway. Im in Australia and our state government (NSW) is co-funding installations of chargers with Tesla on the basis these superchargers are opened to all EVs. I own a model three and a Lightning. I am really excited to be able to charge my Lightning at the Tesla charging stations. I rarely charge away from home, but the added comfort and security of Tesla chargers will be huge for road trips. Even here in California.

  • @thenetworkarchitectchannel

    My ability to express my excitement on the effect this will have falls short. Tesla obviously had been planning this for a long time, as field techs had all the parts needed along with the back end software made available. The speed from the White House Fact Sheet announcement to these installs I thought was going to be about a year, but it was mere days. Being able to watch your vid on an open Supercharger is simply AMAZING! thx for all you do. BTW, my wife and & own a Tesla Model 3 & a Volvo XC40 Recharge.

      Tesla was making this promise pre-Biden. I am pleased that Biden and Co provided incentives to expedite the rollout. Tesla's supercharger access will bring a lot of new non-Tesla EV buyers to the scene, knowing they have more choices and the availability of an experienced and well-designed network of DCFCs.

    Thanks for great reporting! I’m new to EV. Had my Lightning since September 2022, from Alberta, Canada. I’ve had a Starlink system for over a year and it works perfectly. So I’ve known once Tesla opens up supercharger, it will be a paradigm shift for EV travel. And positively impact competition, which will also improve other EV infrastructure.

    It’s going to cause growing pains in the beginning but for all the pain, it’s worth it because every person who has a bad experience on another network will tell their friends they will never own an EV again. This helps everyone. They just need to be designed better. I agree with others, magic dock should only be on end units where there is an extra parking spot next to it.

    In a different vein, I have owned my Mach E for two years and wished someone had provided an in-depth video on ownership and how to maximize range in the COLD months and the HOT days of summer. I now make it a point to educate the curious on this reality when asked about my experience, the cost of charging at home vs. on the road, as well as the range. If you've done such a video, I'd love to get that link so I can share it and allow you to better articulate those kinds of answers. I appreciate your videos and share them often, keep up the great work in educating the rest of us. And BTW, thanks for your videos on L2 chargers well ahead of my Mach E purchase; I was completely overwhelmed before I saw them. Cheers mate.

    Some of the Superchargers in central NJ lately have introduced very significant price discounts for off peak!! For example, the WAWA just off Route 9 on King Georges Road is just $0.17 per kWH from midnight I believe to 10:00 AM. Also at the Shop-rite on Route 35 in Perth Amboy. (Use the savings to have some Taco Bell over there during the charging session!) Great stuff!

    As a Tesla owner, I am good with this. More demand on the charging network will probably mean more charging stations available. Granted I am not a city person, so I don't experience the packed chargers like in CA. But just as long as other EV owners are respectful to try to not block a charger, or get some sort of extension cord I don't think there is a problem. I don't want to be stuck with Tesla and I am happy to see other EVs

    • @nc3826
      @nc3826 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of Tesla owners are like you and are reasonable... So let's hope Tesla offers some type of extension.... Better yet, just make the cables the same length, as the rest of the DCFC industry ... ASPS... Since at this point. most CCS owners will have to block a charger or not use the network at all....
      It is a shame that mostly press goes to the few, that are unreasonable....

    Your videos are great! As a 2020 Model 3 owner, pre CCS compatibility, it irks me a bit that I have to invest a good amount of money to make my car compatible with CCS dispensers but CCS vehicles can just pull up to a Tesla dispenser and start charging. Even if I had a Tesla compatible car with CCS I would still need to buy an adapter. There you have it. Early morning, pre coffee, gripe.🙂

    Cool channel and content. Found it from the MKBHD video like a lot of others but you have a new subscriber. I know you mentioned the requirements in the infrastructure bill to be able to access funds (I love this decision) but I really hope that eventually we legislate this fully to standardize both charging and access to charging stations. This is a good start but we need to go further. I couldn't imagine how difficult widespread automobile adoption would have been if Fords could only get gas at Fords and were barred from Chevy gas stations or vice versa. It's just anti-competitive and changing it is going to be a major step in in assuring widespread electric vehicle adoption.

Love the unintentional cross collab with other TH-camrs and this was a great review.

    We own a Tesla and a CCS car, so I have both perspectives. I think it's great that Tesla is opening up the network and it's great that it seems like a better experience already compared to the CCS networks. While it might be a problem with more crowded chargers in the short term, I'm more optimistic after seeing what Tesla said during Investor Day about what they are doing with on-route planning to hopefully mitigate some of the potential congestion issues for Tesla owners. Hopefully this also pushes CCS chargepoint operators to get their butts in gear and provide a better experience at their charging stations.
