      Gen 2 has a bunch of Pokemon that are designed around the Special Defense stat now existing, like Ho-oh, Lugia, Shuckle, Chansey/Blissey got gigantic Sp Def stats without OP Sp Atk.
      And Pokemon like Heracross and the Hitmons got to have solid Sp Def even though their Sp Atk was abysmal.
      Many fast special attackers could now be frail against both sides.
      And Slowking and Bellossom got to be more special defensive versions of Slowbro and Vileplume without that also increasing their attacking power.

      Jespoke there would be so much potential, that those Pokemans could achieve tho...

    Another gen one mechanic is the hyper beam kill drop; meaning there is no recharge when you knock out a pokemon with it. More firing my lazers in that gen

    • @globalistgamer6418
      @globalistgamer6418 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Probably a bug, but I feel like this was actually a cool risk/reward mechanic if you aren't sure whether you can make the KO in one hit. This would actually be good to bring back, since recharge moves aren't worth using the way they work now.

    • @IschmarVI
      @IschmarVI 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@globalistgamer6418 since it was fixed in stadium, we can definitely assume that it was a bug. But it was quite impactful nonetheless, especially when you consider that Tauros was a thing with its almost 1/5 critical hit ratio so even switching out to not allowing the insta-recharge was still pretty dangerous

      @blueaqua2122 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    • @Kisarez
      @Kisarez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      It doesn't always thaw though. It's still a darn nasty status since it can immobilize everything. At least with burn, poison and paralysis you will/might still act; and sleep there is fortunately sleep clause in competitive play..

    • @bunnyhoppie1605
      @bunnyhoppie1605 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      The thing that makes Freeze still ridiculous is there is no max number of turns a Pokemon can remain indefinitely frozen, unlike Sleep where the max number of turns is 3. So you can in very rare but still entirely possible remian frozen for ANY NUMBER of given turns. I've even seen recordings of matches where someone remained frozen for over 20 turns!
      There's alot of counters and checks for the ailment these days, but it's still a very nasty thing to proc.

    • @Marcusjnmc
      @Marcusjnmc 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      xP someone clearly missed the recent team dreamball vs team scald match in the MBL, aside from that though freeze can be a nightmare in the current game, it makes taking repeated weak blizzards from Alolan Ninetails potentially game deciding

    Psychic was such a broken move, even if you were up against a special wall, you would just spam psychic to get special drops, and eventually you would win.
    Hyper beam was broken as fuck, which made tauros a monster.

      @jamesdinius7769 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@aceclover758 Also why Tauros was good. Body Slam for reliable damage. Hyper Beam for a big finisher. Blizzard for Rydon and Golem and Earthquake for Gengar. Maybe swap in Fire Blast to burn opposing Tauros.

    • @aceclover758

    A few things I think is interesting when you are going to talk about in your future videos about Gen 1:
    - Typings: Normal Types were immun to Bodyslam's secondary effect to paralyse and while Normal Typing wasn't as broken as Psychic, it was equivalently powerful as offensive Dragon Type moves in Gen 4-5 because it is only resisted by Rock Types and Gengar aside from having powerful base power attacks such as Slash, Hyperbeam, Wrap, Bodyslam and Double Edge.
    - Moves: Reflect is permanent and can only be removed by Haze.

    Quick update: due to a recently discovered bug, a move of the type of the opposing Pokemon cannot status the opponent, the most important Pokemon this affects are Body Slam users

    • @sayuze5062
      @sayuze5062 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah this was discovered in 2015 (a thread can be found on smogon I think). Note that this was the case for Pokemon Showdown and other online simulators not coding that in properly, it's always been like this on the original RBY games though

    • @sayuze5062
      @sayuze5062 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Magnus Von Braun Nope, the way it works is that Normal type pokemon are immune to Normal type moves' secondary attack status. Same with Ice types not being able to be frozen by Ice Beam/Blizzard and Fire types not being able to burned by stuff like Flamethrower. So what was affected were normal types like Chansey, Snorlax and Tauros not being able to be paralyzed by Body Slam(which was obviously meta defining yeah). Golem can still para Rhydon or other Golems with Body slam though

    Another interesting, nonrelated aspect of Gen 1 battling.
    Leech Seed runs off the same calcs as Poison. What this means is that Leech Seed does the same damage as Poison damage. Which ALSO means that Toxic is affected by this too.
    So Leech Seed will do the same damage as the Toxic damage if the Toxic effect is applied to a Pokemon.

    6:10 Bonus point about the accuracy mechanics in Gen I, though this wouldn't come up in competitive play: Using an X Accuracy made *all* your moves ignore the accuracy check and hit every time... including the OHKO moves Guillotine, Horn Drill and Fissure.
    Also, those moves don't have some kind of flag to say 'oh, they were hit by that specific move, they're KO'd'. They're just hardcoded to do over 65,000 damage, and no Pokémon has anywhere close to that amount of HP.
    Pointless trivia, but maybe useful in some overly nerdy pub quiz someday. Massively unlikely. But maybe.

    • @endymallorn
      @endymallorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe there's one permutation of Missingno. that can take an X-Accuracy Guillotine and have 1 HP left (or because it's Missingno, -1 HP or back to 65535 again). - I may be wrong but I thought I saw that somewhere.

    Gen1 would have been more balanced if:
    - cut had been a BUG type move, BP 70
    - a strong BUG type move had been added
    - strengh, take down, mega punch and mega kick had been FIGHTING type moves
    - ghost had been supereffective against psychic
    - a strong GHOST type move had been added
    - ghost type had been in the special tier, not in the physical one
    - crits hadn't depended on base speed
    - hyper beam had always needed a recharge turn, regardless of any kill
    - roar and whirlwind could have phazed other pkmns
    - focus energy had boosted the atk stat instead of halving it
    - evasion moves hadn't been so damn broken
    that so and we wouldn't always play on Showdown! with only 16 OverUsed. I also wonder if this would have implied that gen2 didn't set on being so stall oriented with dark and steel types so overpowered.

    Even if ghost types were super effective I don't think it would have made a difference. The only ghost type move that takes type into account is lick which has a base power of 20. That combined with the fact that the Ghastly line are also poison type they would have fared just as poorly against physic types even with a super effective lick.

    I actually quite like the way Criticals worked in Gen 1. They obviously need a bit of balancing, but they do create an interesting variance in sweeper-type pokemon. If you use a fast pokemon, you ignore self-buffs and instead focus on speed and crits. If you use a slower pokemon you focus on self-buffs and avoiding criticals.

    • @globalistgamer6418

      It's an interesting idea, but Speed is already a useful enough stat just determining turn order. Perhaps there could be a Luck stat that affects crit rates as well as accuracy/evasion to some extent, and the chance of additional affects occuring on attacking moves?

  • @tonlito22

    Normal types were actually better than Psychic types, because of Hyper Beam, Body Slam, only very few decent pokemon resisting it anyway and basically no Fighting moves because they were subpar and Fighting types were scared off by the Psychic types.
    Tauros, Snorlax and Chansey were dominant and other Normal types, however just short of OU, were usually very good. Although it must be said they were also helped by large coverage options, given how few move options some pokes had.

    • @smaragdchaos
      @smaragdchaos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Normal types better than Psychic types? Try again, Psychic was the most overpowered move in gen I, having 1/3 chances of lowering target's special. That shit was a truly wallbreaking move.

    • @shadownite3378
      @shadownite3378 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      smaragdchaos competitively? no psychic types weren't as dominant as the normals in the ou metagame. maybe another format that allows mew or mewtwo?

    • @OnePieceSanjiRobin
      @OnePieceSanjiRobin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The problem is that intercomparison is hard. The tradeoff between normal and psychic is basically:
      1. STAB tradeoff: STAB on Psychic vs STAB on Body Slam/Hyper Beam (/Wrap/Slash/Boom)
      2. Defensive tradeoff: NFE damage from Psychic (and the rare Fighting attack) vs no para from Body Slam (and no SE damage from Jolteon Pin MIssile, but SE damage from Double Kick/other rare Fighting attacks)
      There is really little in there. The first is actually just better for the normal types (Hyper Beam/Body Slam were better than Psychic, I'm sorry. Body Slams para chance is even better than the chance on a spc drop and Hyper Beam STAB is just more important. Furthermore, because of psychic being such a good type defensively, there are usually more pokes walling psychic than body slam/hyper beam.), but so hard to compare, because they run from different stats (Chansey would love being a psychic type, while Mew would be fine having (at least a secondary) normal type.)
      The defensive tradeoff really only helps in Uber, where Psychic is a good type because it is the only type that can handle Mewtwo somewhat. In OU there isn't that much Psychic to begin with, potential users like Starmie, Chansey and Slowbro even don't use the attack, which is also a cause and effect thing. Psychic is the only type that walls psychic, psychics are used much because little can wall them and they cannot be easily countered, so people use psychic types. Which actually reduces their usefulness.
      The fact that three out of the four most important special powerhouses had access to a recovery move in OU also didn't help. But yeah, it DOES depend on the format which type is better, I agree on that.

    • @zach6395
      @zach6395 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe as a whole, but Alakazam and Mewtwo were just too OP. Exegutor and Slowbro was nearly there as well. High special, higher speed than the normal types, and a higher critical hit chance due to that speed. Plus Amnesia was pretty much one of the best moves in the game. The only normal types who could take a hit from either Mewtwo or Alakazam were Snorlax and Chansey. Tauros had the offense to check them, IF it could take the hit.

If a pokemon is paralyzed/burned and alters one of its stats, it doesn't actually affect the opposing pokemon: the stat penalty simply temporairily "vanishes". If however, the opposing pokemon has one of its stats modified, the impaired pokemon has the stat penalty inflicted AGAIN which basically allows for burning the opposing pokemon and then start spamming growth which basically increases your special AND halves the opponents attack

    I want a reboot of gen 1! They should make a darker pokemon game similar to the manga and the true pkmn world that its creator had envisioned. In doing so, they could also remake all the stats of all the pkmn to balance them and change the types and movepools so we could have a more diverse meta. This would surely attract those like me, growing up playing gen 1 but too mature now for the childish tone of the pkmn games.

    • @jamescooke3946
      @jamescooke3946 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I'm not a Gewunner but in defence of Gen 1 I would say that the game wasn't meant to be a highly competitive game rather just for casual battles. Once the Pokemon META got more popular Game Freak decided to fix up the META more to allow it to be balanced.

    • @TA-ew9bi
      @TA-ew9bi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mcfcrulez ! Even casually most of these mechanics are really bad. Critical hits, freezing, psychic being overpowered. Speaking of psychic, if it's that overpowered competitively, imagine how broken it was with casual players.

    • @TA-ew9bi
      @TA-ew9bi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Born2Run maybe, but psychic being that strong was due to a glitch, it wasn't intentional. It didn't really have anything to do with mewtwo, so you can't give them credit for that.

    • @jamescooke3946
      @jamescooke3946 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're missing the point though. When R/B/Y came out most people wouldn't have known how broken some of these mechanics were due to having limited access to the internet (I mean come on it 1996) By the time people were catching onto how broken Gen 1 was the 2nd Gen was practically on its way.

    • @misterbadguy7325
      @misterbadguy7325 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, psychic being overpowered makes perfect sense when you think of them as like an asset in an RPG. They're the endgame stuff you get with special effort, Mewtwo in particular, and asking for them to be balanced would be like asking for the Rusty Dirk to be balanced versus the Excalibur. It was about the experience of getting an Alakazam and steamrolling through the Elite Four, and competitive battling was just something you'd do with your friends to show them your party. They didn't really realize that competitive battling would be a thing and now everyone is using that Alakazam.

    2:00 according to bulbapedia, actually later gens also ignore your stats on critical hits, but only under certain conditions, same for the target. for each set of gens the following happens:
    gen1: the damage actually doesnt get a direct modifier but instead the level is counted as double (don't ask me why but the attacker's level is part of the calculation), also ALL stat mods (including beneficial) go down the drain.
    TLDR: making a double level hit on neutral stat grounds.
    gen2: flat double damage and ALL (including beneficial) modifiers plus reflect/lightscreen (they are more meta-effects in gen2 and forward) plus burn penalty are ignored, IF the opposing defending stat (Def/SpDef depending on type) is on a higher stage than the attacking stat (Atk/SpAtk, depending on type), otherwise you just get the double damage
    TLDR: if you are on a better ground that your opponent, use that and double damage, if not, back to neutral and then double damage
    gen3 and on: flat double damage, also defensive meta-boosts by attacks (reflect, lightscreen, aurora veil) are ALWAYS ignored, burn penalty is NOT ignored (moved into the damage calculation instead), also you only ignore the opponents positive and your negative stats.
    gen7 and on: see gen3 but only 1,5 multiplier
    TLDR for both: only ignore things that are disadvantageous and then hit double or 1,5x.
    so for example for gen3+: if you are swords danced up to +6 and the opponent used defense curl to +6 as well, you would do normal damage on a normal hit but on crit you get to keep your +6 but the opponent will lose their +6 so you hit 400% in addition to the crit boost. and if your opponent would be -6 as well you would essentially hit 16 times the power plus crit bonus.
    also besides the crit fun just as a fun fact, as each stat level away from ±0 comes with diminishing returns (for reference ±0 is 2/2=1 and every plus away from 0 increases the top by 1 up to 8/2 = 4, while every minus away from 0 increases the bottom by one down to 2/8 = 0,25, changes towards zero do the opposite for obvious reasons)
    it is actually mathematically more viable to spread stat changes over both pokemon, instead of a ±2 which would result in 2 for you or 0,5 for the opponent, which is essentially the same, but by doing +1 to you and -1 to the opponent you do 2/3 (0,66...) for them and 3/2 (1,5) for you resulting in a total of (3/2)/(2/3) = (3/2)*(3/2) = (3*3)/(2*2) = 9/4 = 2,25 bonus for you or 4/9 (0,44...) for them, or instead of tripling the fun with ±4, a +2/-2 spread quadruples the power.
