Gen 1 is far from perfect but they really are amazing games and they hold up to this day. They have some serious glitches and bugs and despite the hardware and graphics being obsolete at this point they’re still a blast to play. I have just as much fun with gen 1 as I do with the new games. Flawed for sure, but still awesome
I honestly enjoyed more gen 1 than a lot of other pokemon games despite some design issues. But most of the flaws are just for technical limitations. Im surprised that gen 1 pokemon aged so well compared to other RPG of that era.
Some moves (and even mons) were craaaaazy OP in gen 1. Dragon types were quite bad at damaging, but they were nearly unbeatable If hyper beam got a KO in gen 1, it WOULDN’T NEED TO GET RECHARGE If a multi turn move (like pin missile, y’know the moves that hit from 2-5 turns) is used and gets a crit, they ALL do. In gen 1, sp atk, and sp def were 1 stat called special. And before the physical special split (before then 1 type had moves that were either always physical or special) Pokémon with high special stats that has a type with all moves special attacks would hit crazy hard. And if you have a special type vs a Pokemon with a high special stat then it wud do nuthing Also critical hits were based on the speed stat so Tauros was OP. The psychic type was also rlly OP because there was NO dark type moves, or even dark types, it was immune to ghost as well so it was only weak to bug. And in gen 1 the bug type sucked Edit: but there was one drawback, your mons level up super slowly. But the OP moves make it so it doesn’t rlly matter Edit 2: oh yeah, i forgot the trapping moves. Instead of them stopping you from switching, it stops you from moving. For 2-5 turns, it will say “POKéMON’s attack continues!” Well, it says ur mons name’s attack continues, or your enemy name’s mon.
Every pokemon game has op pokemon and moves. And i dont agree in some of the things you said about gen 1 being OP: -"If hyper beam got a KO in gen 1, it WOULDN’T NEED TO GET RECHARGE" Well, honestly gen 2 hyper beam and after that is just useless. In gen 1 is more a risk, reward factor, even if it wasnt intended -"If a multi turn move (like pin missile, y’know the moves that hit from 2-5 turns) is used and gets a crit, they ALL do." The moves are so weak so i dont see a problem here, even with crits. -"In gen 1, sp atk, and sp def were 1 stat called special. And before the physical special split (before then 1 type had moves that were either always physical or special) Pokémon with high special stats that has a type with all moves special attacks would hit crazy hard. And if you have a special type vs a Pokemon with a high special stat then it wud do nuthing" Except from Mewtwo (that pokemon is OP, not discussion in that), every phychic pokemon has weak defense and low HP, so if you use physical attacks you can beat it very easily. I even prefer phychic type in gen 1 than gen 2 just because of that. Special stat was never that bad imo. The split stat make some pokemon unusable for me, like haunter or kadabra, now dont resist a sh... -"The psychic type was also rlly OP because there was NO dark type moves, or even dark types, it was immune to ghost as well so it was only weak to bug. And in gen 1 the bug type sucked" Normal types were much stronger imo, and counters it very well. Thats why Alakazam for example isnt consider the best in competitive. Also bug type is more like an introduction type, to beginner players to start the adventure. Thats why is weak. Even in next gens isnt that great. -"Also critical hits were based on the speed stat so Tauros was OP." Electrode is the fastest Pokemon in gen 1 -"but there was one drawback, your mons level up super slowly." Heavily disagree. I think gen 1 was the most fast paced of all the generations. Grinding isnt that much, and battles are quick as hell.
Wait, once thing I don't get is, if in Gen 1 you can give 252 EVs and DVs and whatever to a Pokemon's stats, why aren't those stats the same as in the wikis? you know Gengar having 394 special instead of 358 like in this video
These were all among my choices. I could never narrow it down to the same 6, but Starmie, Jolteon, and Alakazam were also favourites. Sometimes Mew. I always went back and fourth on Snorlax and Dragonite, as well as Lapras or Starmie. Always wanted to justify Parasect for its Spore and Giga Drain, but Gengar with a similar moveset was just better overall even if Hypnosis seemed to miss more.
Alakazam , Blastoise , snorlax , clefable, gengar and Dragonite were my go to . Although Mewtwo is my number one favorite legendary along with Mew and Rayquaza
As someone who played red and blue competively, your team is just ok. Lacking amnesia is a head scratcher. Most competitions wouldnt allow mew or mewtwo for obvious reasons. You are missing too many top tier meta picks. Tauros instantly comes to mind. Chansey as well. Some other good top picks are Eggy, Jynx, slowbro, starmie, etc. Dragonite is a one trick pony and wrap doesnt have great accuracy and status effects mess with him vad not to mention he can be 1 shot by blizzards. I just cant take a "best team" serious when it lacks Tauros and his great type, stats, moveset. Chansey is a must because Chansey just hard counters so many.
bro gengar: -hypnosis -dream eater -confuse ray -seismic toss Bro get that GARBAGE out of here. Gengar best gen 1 use set: 1. hypnosis 2. thunderbolt 3 and 4. psychic, night shade, mega drain, body slam, confuse ray come on now
Looking back now, Red, Blue and Yellow might have been the hardest Pokemon game ever as you had very limited choices compared to today. No wonder they did two remakes in gen 3 and gen 7.
Few things to say: Mewtwo whitout Amnesia? It’s crazy! Doubling his Special stats is what made him invincible in the first place. Swap Substitue whit Amesia and even Chansey would have difficulty switching in. Protection against thunder wave is arguable however, but seems inferior overall. Night Shade was better than Seismic Toss because it was glitched and also hit the Normal and thus it has no immunity contrary of Seismoc Toss. I personally don’t like the Hypbosis Eater strat because it is 100% unreliable. It make a 50/50 scenario where the enemy can see the strat coming miles away and is likely to switch, and even if you tap Hypnosis twice, there is still a chance to miss the second shot.
Team I used was : Ninetails (highest fire dmg) Dragonite (only dragon) Tauros (broken... just broken) Starmie (fastest water, psychic type was OP) Jolteon (crit speed) / (or mew from nugget bridge if allowed) Articuno ( gen 1 blizzard)
Mystic. Is it viable to have the psedou legendaries within a certain region on a best team, alongside the best starter and pokemon for defeating rivals, gym leaders and the elite four/champion ?
I don't see the point of using slow Pokemon like Rhydon, Snorlax or Golem in gen 1. First, low critical hit, second, you will not attack first. It is literally a auto-loss pick.
I never released that Rhydon can learn Surf (which it apparently can learn in all 8 generations). How the heck can a Rhydon surf without sinking or taking water damage?
Snorlax amnesia is kinda tricky, because if you face something with double kick and a nice damage that outspeeds you (Tauros) it's pretty done, or a Hitmonlee, he just sets one or two meditate and a Hi-jump kick ends with all, or a dragonite, he just sets one agility and then wrap through all your team until is GG, (unless you have gengar)
So there is one problem with this team the moves thunderbolt and earthquake were given to Pokemon that can't learn them by level up. And you can only get one TM for each of them.
The role in the team that Gengar should have is to make Explosion fail, being immune to it. Also, the dream eater set is only viable if you put no sleep clause or if the opponent doesn't switch out the sleeping pokemon. Btw, why not Tauros? He's supposedly the most used Pokemon of gen I with Earthquake, Body Slam, Hyper Beam and Blizzard. He hits harder than Dragonite with Hyper Beam (with STAB) and has a better base speed. To finish why Substitute over Amnesia for Mewtwo? I believe that only Electrode is faster than Mewtwo in gen I (as if any one uses Electrode 😂) so with one Amnesia the only Pokemon he would struggle against is Chansey
If ur playing the game on virtual console etc u can trade for Gengar if not you just do the trainer fly glitch to get a Gengar wich can even be optained before Brock even a List is out there where u can see wich trainer gives u wich encounters.
I love all the mons. I would trade Snorlax for Tauros. It was the king of gen 1 outside of Mewtwo since it hits like a truck with its high attack stat and speed stat.
MysticUmbreon didn't even put any set up moves on the snorlax!!!!!!!!! Amnesia on mewtwo instead of sub, recover instead of tbolt too. Also psyshock and psystrike are better than psychic.
The answer finally occurred to me: trading. After Silph Co, teach Lapras Thunderbolt and teach Earthquake to either Snorlax or Rhydon. Then trade them to a friend, start your game over, and have your friend trade them back. On your new file you can teach the TMs to the other Pokemon when you acquire them.

In any other generation hypnosis suck yeah because they fix the turns the mon can be asleep to 1-3 instead the 2-forever it was back then
My brother JUST finished this game for the first time and he was wondering what the perfect team would be! I can’t wait to send him this video 😂
I had Blastoise, Nidoking, Mewtwo, Golem and Garyados
My blue team:
- Blastoise
- Raichu
- Victreebel
- Fearow
- Hitmonlee
- Ninetails
golem, weezing, gengar, machamp, charrizard, gyrados
Hey mystic, you seemed pretty tired in this video, are you okay because if your working yourself too hard then take a break, you’ve been on a roll these past few weeks and u deserve one for sure
The dude sits on a computer lol he’s never overworked. Even Thinking that is a joke lolol
5:10 No amnesia? Edit: not blizzard on Mewtwo? I'm a little confused.
Rock Slide has no secondary effect on Generation 1, it was added in Generation 2, also where is Amnesia, Blizzard and Tauros?
I know what you’re going to stay. 3 nidokings and 3 alakazams.
For the story mode?
My team…
1. Mewtwo
2. Zapdos
3. Dragonite
4. Gengar
5. Vaporeon
6. Vileplume
a) Mewtwo is your team, but
b) It wouldn't have Amnesia, this is all I need to conclude that you didn't even scratch the basics of Gen1 mechanics.
If you think I have no idea by mentioning Amnesia just look up what it does in Gen1.
Right? It's bit shocking
Saxon Jedi yes
I tried so hard to catch a dratini but it never showed so I gave up. I think my current team takes second place if not allowed to use any pokemon already mentioned lol. Nidoking Butterfree Kadabra Blastoise Charizard Zapdos
You gona need tauros for sure.
Edit: oke he isnt here so nope.
My team is:
Lvl 55
Blastoise
Surf
Ice beam
Double Team
Dig
Lvl 53
Raichu
Thunderbolt
Thunder wave
Body slam
Toxic
Lvl 54
Kadabra
Psychic
Recover
Disable
Thunder wave
Lvl 50
Snorlax
Hyper beam
Amnesia
Thunder
Fire blast
Lvl 54
Nidoking
Earthquake
Horn drill
Poison sting
Rock slide
Lvl 55
Dragonite
Dragon rage
Thunder wave
Blizzard
Body slam
I would prefer Starmie over Lapras & an aggro version of Gengar (with Confuse Ray, Psychic, T Bolt & Toxic / Hypnosis)
But overall ur team is a good pick 👍
Definitely hypnosis as if you switch out a badly poisoned Pokemon then it becomes regular poison
I got gengar from the same way you get mew
@@ProfBean69 poison works better later on since u have Dragonite on ur back with wrap (regular or toxic poison wont matter at all then).
With Hypnosis on the other hand putting someone to sleep and u will get at least one free shot on everything. Problem is: accuracy sucks
@@musiyevonchilla6769 If using wrap on Dragonite, then toxic would be better because they couldn't switch.
Lapras can use sing and Psychic. OP.
I would like to share my team for Fire red
Arcanine
Venasuar
Snorlax
Fearow
Lapras
And last mr mime
I also had Venusaur and Arcanine but I had Chansey, Aerodactyl, Seadra and Primeape
Honestly you should do a team of branched evolutions because it'd be cool to know which evolutions us better in game
I decided to go with Surf on my Lapras instead of Hydro Pump.
I agree. Plus it's fun to use glitches like the ditto glitch.
Every game has flaws. But yeah, playing the older games will always be so much fun.
Dragon types were quite bad at damaging, but they were nearly unbeatable
If hyper beam got a KO in gen 1, it WOULDN’T NEED TO GET RECHARGE
If a multi turn move (like pin missile, y’know the moves that hit from 2-5 turns) is used and gets a crit, they ALL do.
In gen 1, sp atk, and sp def were 1 stat called special. And before the physical special split (before then 1 type had moves that were either always physical or special) Pokémon with high special stats that has a type with all moves special attacks would hit crazy hard. And if you have a special type vs a Pokemon with a high special stat then it wud do nuthing
Also critical hits were based on the speed stat so Tauros was OP.
The psychic type was also rlly OP because there was NO dark type moves, or even dark types, it was immune to ghost as well so it was only weak to bug. And in gen 1 the bug type sucked
Edit: but there was one drawback, your mons level up super slowly. But the OP moves make it so it doesn’t rlly matter
Edit 2: oh yeah, i forgot the trapping moves. Instead of them stopping you from switching, it stops you from moving. For 2-5 turns, it will say “POKéMON’s attack continues!” Well, it says ur mons name’s attack continues, or your enemy name’s mon.
Amnesia would raise both ur spdef and spatk sharply due to spdef and spatk being the same stat too.
Also Ohko moves could hit if user is faster then target not by level.
Every pokemon game has op pokemon and moves. And i dont agree in some of the things you said about gen 1 being OP:
-"If hyper beam got a KO in gen 1, it WOULDN’T NEED TO GET RECHARGE"
Well, honestly gen 2 hyper beam and after that is just useless. In gen 1 is more a risk, reward factor, even if it wasnt intended
-"If a multi turn move (like pin missile, y’know the moves that hit from 2-5 turns) is used and gets a crit, they ALL do."
The moves are so weak so i dont see a problem here, even with crits.
-"In gen 1, sp atk, and sp def were 1 stat called special. And before the physical special split (before then 1 type had moves that were either always physical or special) Pokémon with high special stats that has a type with all moves special attacks would hit crazy hard. And if you have a special type vs a Pokemon with a high special stat then it wud do nuthing"
Except from Mewtwo (that pokemon is OP, not discussion in that), every phychic pokemon has weak defense and low HP, so if you use physical attacks you can beat it very easily.
And in gen 1 the bug type sucked"
Normal types were much stronger imo, and counters it very well. Thats why Alakazam for example isnt consider the best in competitive. Also bug type is more like an introduction type, to beginner players to start the adventure. Thats why is weak. Even in next gens isnt that great.
-"Also critical hits were based on the speed stat so Tauros was OP."
Electrode is the fastest Pokemon in gen 1
-"but there was one drawback, your mons level up super slowly."
Heavily disagree.
Because EVs in Gen 1 go to 65535 and not 255 like in Gen 3 and later, they did the maths wrong in the video
I kinda knew Dragonite was a member.
3:20 Mewtwo
6:27 Gengar
8:28 Rhydon
10:14 Snorlax
11:47 Lapras
12:52 Dragonite
I completed Pokemon Red last week and Dragonite actually sucked for me :/ Was the worst pokemon in my party.
MrDjgalas What was your moveset? Dragonite can be tough in game since you get it late but it’s pretty decent
I hope you get to 1 million really fast! you deserve the best man...I've watched all your teams videos at least a couple times a piece
I’d face you with
Mew
Alakazam
Machamp
Toros
Archanine
Gyarados
Honestly, my strategy for gen 1 will always and only ever be use earthquake throughout the entire game.
I dont remember being able to use another move whilst wrap was working. You have to wait until the wrap attack is finished.
bro gengar:
-hypnosis
-dream eater
-confuse ray
-seismic toss
Bro get that GARBAGE out of here. Gengar best gen 1 use set:
1. hypnosis
2. thunderbolt
3 and 4. psychic, night shade, mega drain, body slam, confuse ray
come on now
Gotta give props to Mystic for knowing what Pokemon is right for what. The content is pretty enjoyable ngl.
Back in the day when psychic type was broken as s***
Mewtwo , Gengar , Rhydon , Snorlax , Papers , Dragonite
Looking back now, Red, Blue and Yellow might have been the hardest Pokemon game ever as you had very limited choices compared to today.
No wonder they did two remakes in gen 3 and gen 7.
Few things to say:
Mewtwo whitout Amnesia?
Hypneater useless strat cause sleep clause u switch out sleeping mon and No more dreameater
All set damage moves (seismic toss, night shade, etc.) were bugged in gen 1 to not be affected by immunity iirc
3:20 start of list
WE’VE GOT SHIRTS ON SALE.
I'm trying to guess what Other teams of 3 were missing in the pokemon league Certification 3rd Exam
Surely six Mewtwo's is the best team.
Team I used was :
Ninetails (highest fire dmg)
Dragonite (only dragon)
Tauros (broken... just broken)
Starmie (fastest water, psychic type was OP)
Jolteon (crit speed) / (or mew from nugget bridge if allowed)
Articuno ( gen 1 blizzard)
Mystic. Is it viable to have the psedou legendaries within a certain region on a best team, alongside the best starter and pokemon for defeating rivals, gym leaders and the elite four/champion ?
My Go to team for Gen 1:
- Venasaur
- Starmie
- Arcanine
- Nidoking
- Dodrio
- Hitmonlee
Nice team, ABacross!
Cut Venachoke and Hitmondead for better pokes and its solid.
@@ZxChrono In favor of Exeggutor and maybe Snorlax.
So...
No amnesia mewto
No starmie
No tauros
No Chansey
What is this weird team?
The thing i hated from red and blue is wrap because you cant attack at all
Hey love the video keep up the good work!!💗💗
Why seismic toss over nightshade?
Night shade can't hit normal types. Toss can hit everything
@@ImVeryBrad I may remember it wrong but in gen 1 I think nightshade does affect normal types and it can't be countered
Mystic Unbreon, what do you use to Write your titles? They always look so slick and beautiful. I'd really like to know. Thanks.
Just give everyone Body Slam. You can't possibly lose!
I don't see the point of using slow Pokemon like Rhydon, Snorlax or Golem in gen 1. First, low critical hit, second, you will not attack first. It is literally a auto-loss pick.
Isn't Earthquake works for Rhydon just as much as surf against other Rhydon?
I had Gengar, Lapras and Dragonite in my original team in Yellow!!!
For Gengar; why seismic toss instead of nightshade?
Why not just use Nightshade on Gengar? It does the same thing Seismic Toss.
Who just skips to the end to see the teams?
I never released that Rhydon can learn Surf (which it apparently can learn in all 8 generations). How the heck can a Rhydon surf without sinking or taking water damage?
I support Mystic decision because I love gen 1
why not do a toxic leech seed or toxic wrap combo?
So broken
I think its good, can you do the other gens?
My gen one team I always use Mewtwo,Nidoking, Venusaur, Raichu, Gyarados, Arcanine.
Mystic:“I don’t like to put legendaries on my team” Me:...
No Tauros and you didn’t even put Amnesia on Snorlax!?
Snorlax amnesia is kinda tricky, because if you face something with double kick and a nice damage that outspeeds you (Tauros) it's pretty done, or a Hitmonlee, he just sets one or two meditate and a Hi-jump kick ends with all, or a dragonite, he just sets one agility and then wrap through all your team until is GG, (unless you have gengar)
Franco Moreira Hitmonlee is too frail, dies real easy. Fighting types just suck dick in gen 1.
So there is one problem with this team the moves thunderbolt and earthquake were given to Pokemon that can't learn them by level up. And you can only get one TM for each of them.
what about night shade? Night shade is basicly sizemic toss but ghost type.
My gen 1 team usually ends up consisting of Pidgeot
Nidoking
Gyarados/ Lapras
Jolteon/ Raichu
No matter what starter I pick
Blizzard should be on Mewtwo. 130 base power 80% accuracy 30% chance to freeze.
Blizzard's accuracy in gen 1 was 90%, not 80%, which is all the more reason to use it on Mewtwo
130 base power?
Anto RetroGamer or 110. I don’t remember.
Omg thank u I needed this :D
Psyshock and Psystrike in Gen 1 ?
Are you sick Mr. umbreon? Your voice sounds like you have fever. If you're sick Mr. Umbreon I hope you'll be okay
I wish I knew about STAB in 1998.
Rhydon only really fears grass and water types
Me in my nuzlocke: Haha Razor Leaf go BRRRRRRRR
How do you get Thunderbolt on two Pokemon? I thought TMs could only be used once in gen. 1. Otherwise, I love the team!
