    I've got three of those magazines, and I've never successfully fired three shots in succession from any of them. I've four of the ten round magazines and they work perfectly. I thoroughly enjoy my 597, but the best extended magazines are a rip off.

    I found out that there was a lot of molten plastic residue getting rounds stuck while they travel up the magazine, so I grabbed some sandpaper strings and made the inner front wall smoother, which lowered my ftf's to zero. No extractor nor trigger problems in mine.
    Oh and the mag feeding lips had another bunch of residue making them asymmetrical and shapes that were meant to be square, weren't. 5 minutes later with an exacto knife, it worked like a charm.

    I had the same problem with the magazine not fitting right. When the thirty round magazine was measured against one of my ten round magazine, it was big over all, where it inserts into the rifle by fifteen thousand. Some sanding, and polishing with eight hundred grit paper help tremendously. These guns are picky about the ammo. You need one that will operate the bolt.

    Using federal box ammo and CCI ammo I have had zero malfunctions with my 3 30 round magazines over thousands and thousands of rounds. I do take the magazines apart and clean them occasionally and I also put a very small bit of lubricant on it

    Interesting enough ..... I should have viewed this video years ago. I purchased a similar 30rd clear plastic loaded for my 597. Did about the same frustration level. Happen to be in a Cabela's store up in MT and saw another 30 rd mag but in BLACK plastic. Hemmed and hawed about purchasing it. Luckily I had enough points to get it free. 1st time out flawless. Now .... a few years later I try the clear plastic mag again after changing out the extractor ...... same-o, same-o. So .... from my experience .... purchase the black plastic mags.

    Replace the extractor with a volquartsen, and ur over filling the mags. It says 30 rounds but its really 25 rounds. I filled a test mag with 30 rounds and the spring broke. So just keep it at 25 and it sould be 👌

    A little late in commenting .... but .... I've found the changing of extractor is probably the number one thing to do. Have had the same rifle for 24 yrs. Just that simple adaptable change made a WORLD of difference. As for the Mags ..... I've found the Remington 597 CLEAR ones are comparable to the pellet droppings from a llama. The BLACK ones, on the other hand, work extremely well, even with over loading to 32. Might want to try ProMag's 597 22rd mags. They seem to have worked well for me over the past 4-yrs.

    I've tried buying two different brand new 30 round mags. I don't know how you managed to get two rounds in a row out of them. I don't know if it's the spring or a bad mold, but neither of them will feed even the second shot, and that's if I could even manage to load more than 20 shots. To then attempt to unload the magazines, I had to pry out every single round. I love the gun itself, and the ten round magazines work great, but I just can't get the 30 rounders to work.

    Like the 10 round mag will not hold 10 rounds right away, the 30 round mag will no hold 30 rounds when you first buy it; the spring has to get worn in. I started with 20 rounds and am up to 25 without any problems.

    I'm confused. The video clearly shows the casing of the first round fly out of the chamber, especially when slowed to .25 speed. Then, you get a failure to fire. You open the chamber and find a spent case. HOW does that happen. :/ I'm definitely not doubting you, but I am curious. That was really odd.

    • @xithappens
      @xithappens 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Slade McCuiston well the only way is if he loaded an empty case into the mag instead of a live round, which I have to agree with you, is pretty weird.

    • @maineiachomestead7550
      @maineiachomestead7550 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Several times the empty ejected, but the bolt didn't travel back far enough to reset the hammer then picked up the next round and went into battery. As Deuce observed, the bolt was most likely dragging on the plastic mag lips.

  • @maineiachomestead7550
    @maineiachomestead7550 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those 30 rd mags are an EPIC fail on Remington's part. My lightly used 597 came with 4 of those POS clear mags. After half an hour of going through the same probs as you, then having to pry em out, I gave up. I thought I was going to have to cut one in pieces to remove it. They're in a box somewhere in the garage now, never to see the light of day again.
    Thank God the rifle came with 2 factory 10 rd mags. I've yet to have a problem with those and want to get a few more. For general plinking you really don't need more than that, IMHO.
    Love the 597, but holy crap make some decent mags for em.

    Thanks for putting up this video even though the results were not as good as you wanted. I am considering a used 597 at the pawn shop for $130. It really looks pretty new. The thumb pull on the slide pulls out easily. Is that not supposed to do that? I might go with a new 10 22 after seeing all the failures you had.

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bolt handle is supposed to pull out like that for cleaning and the actual rifle is fantastic with the most recent 10rd factory mags. This video was only about the 30rd mags being a problem but this 597 is at least twice as acurate as my 10/22 out of the box. (As in under an inch group at 50yds with any ammo) I've got a review of the 597 on the channel as well. Whatever you get don't even think about the Savage 64 see my reviews on that as well. Thanks for watching.

    I have had so many issues with the magazines . I sat down the other day and spent 6 hours with an exacto knife and sandpaper just to get them to work . issues ranged from weak springs . springs breaking . too much plastic couldnt load rounds into the mag . burrs inside mag stopping feeding . halves of mags improperly mated together. I had to shave off and chisel out plastic under the feed lips to allow rounds to move up to the feed lips . I am guessing damaged molds . my magazines are from differant production runs over the last few years and none of them have worked without alot of fiddling with them . most of them have had all manner of insane QC defects . the 10 round mags work but none of the ones I have will actually hold 10 rounds . I love the rifel ..... HATE the mags

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My factory 10 round mags also started out only holding 7 rounds. I've heard you can reverse the spring to fix it but I took a more direct approach. I took a small screw driver and forced the follower down all the way a few times and it's held 10 rounds from that point forward, sure it marked up the follower some but it's worked fine. My theory is that there is some casting flash inside that the spring is getting held up on but will break free with encouragement.

      My father just handed me down a brand new 597 in 22wmr today. Actually it was a used 17 that remington repaired/warranteed by putting a 22wmr on the old 17 stock. We are firing it for the first time this weekend. I am very interested in getting larger capacity magazines for it. Are these the 22wmr magazines giving all this grief? My sons and I have the Mossberg Blaze with 25 round mags and after a few issues during break in they have become perfectly reliable in 22lr with several brands of ammo. After 1 year of shooting have some of these issues with 22 magnum resolved themselves? Did you give up quickly and goback tothe smaller factory mags?

    • @deuceandguns
      @deuceandguns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do but there are some things to keep in mind. Cast lead will leave lead in the can so it's important to have one that comes completely apart for cleaning. Another point is that you've got to be 100% confident in your reloading abilities because if one bullet tumbles inside the can it will take out the baffles inside making the suppressor useless. Remember that baffle strikes are not covered under the warranty.

      +Ray Williams Simply put this magazine is an inferior product. The stock mag works fine as does the rifle. The extended mag has a tab attached to the follower that is intended to actuate the hold open mechanism but either the tab isn't long enough or the spring tension isn't strong enough.
