- Lifeproof vinyl flooring installation vs Pergo Laminate flooring installation ! Is laminate flooring still a good option ? Find out on Jones Knows as we put these products to the torture test.
Welcome to the world of Jones Knows! If this is your first time here, my name is Tim and I'm a flooring contractor along with my 2 sons in Florida. I know I know I don't look old enough to have sons old enough to be working with me, I can't believe it either! I promise I'm not breaking any child labor laws they are both over 18!
In this video, I put waterproof floors like Pergo, Aquaguard, and Hydroshield to the torture test to see if they are a good option. I also explain the differences between the floors to help determine which is the best flooring for you. Is waterproof laminate flooring still a good option over waterproof vinyl flooring. I suggest watching my other video in this series: Lifeproof vs. Nucore first if you haven't already (link below)

Interesting comparison, if not a bit drawn out. Thanks..
I bought generic laminate from Sam's Club for $2 with padding attached. Flooded it the day it installed. Floor was a little wet when I was 95% done against one wall that backed the toilet. I had replaced the toilet and spilled some water, thought maybe it leaked under the wall and just needed to dry. I figured I'd finish the next day. Woke up to the water line under the concrete breaking and flooding the entire floor. I stuck some blocks under it and put a blower blowing under it. I jackhammered up the concrete, fixed the leak, and finished the install. That flooring was down when I sold my house last year. (2020) Installed in 2008. The floor wasn't perfect but serviceable still. I spilled so much paint, had half a dozen fishtank leaks on it, I even sprayed the ceiling with a waterhose(seriously, full on spraying) without plastic over it when I scraped the popcorn to retexture it. Animal accidents, drunks spilling beer, dropping power tools, kegs, ect.
It was still nice when I sold it and has a decade left on it. Turns out that Pergo made Sam's store brand laminate at that point. It wasn't waterproof but it was good stuff.
I bought some cheap laminate that was thick and that I loved the look of for my new house. I finished a few bedrooms in one day, a cat decided it didn't like it, and by the time I saw it the next morning it was already messed up. I took the rest back and was set on vinyl, but I got some samples and tossed them all in a pot of water. The pergo waterproof laminate has been in the water a week fully submerged and I don't see even the slightest damage. I tossed a scrap of the stuff I bought originally in and it was destroyed in hours.
Thanks for all the great info. I’m about to choose for a whole house flooring replacement. The water proof vinyl will be going in both bathrooms.
I hope it was helpful. Good luck with your new flooring. Let me know if you have any questions. Tim
tim, you are the best! thanks for being a good helper. i am a DIY with skills. you are my DUDE.
Thank You!
Thank you so much. This was very helpful because I do have a very heavy piano and after watching this I realized vinyl would not be the best choice for me. I found a beautiful color choice in vinyl, but I am sure I will be able tot find something close it in laminate.
Nucore Performance line would do fine under a piano. I have a video on it it’s the most durable vinyl! It has a stone core

How do they feel underfoot. No one ever covers how they feel under your feet. Doesnt LVP feel like plastic when walked on compared to laminate feeling more like Engineered wood. Would love to hear the feedback,
Laminate: more resistant to scratching, denting, from heavy furniture, kids, pets.
Vinyl: more resistant to wet spills, basement moisture.
Vinyl is softer, laminate is more rugged.
I like your flooring test videos, but it would be great if you could list the specs or brand model that you're testing in the video or description. Since, thickness and wear layers vary within each brand. Thanks.
Will do thanks!
I don’t have moisture issues… but my dogs may pee on the floor once in a while or my kids spill water and drinks on the floor…. So I like the idea of waterproof. We purchased vinyl for our home and eventually the connecting grooves broke and the floor started separating everywhere!! So I was hoping to buy the laminate because of the durability and strong grooves. But it really can’t stand any spills or moisture? The vinyl doesn’t separate for anyone else?
Hello, Thank you for the information, great video. We looking at getting Pergo Portfolio + WetProtect. Our issue is 4 dogs and dog pee. They've destroyed our engineered flooring. You mentioned laminate has really tight locking systems nowadays. Is there any benefit in using a sealer when locking the boards? Thank you!
I'm planning to install plank flooring over my concrete floor in my basement. The challenge I will face is that I'm planning to put a 100 gallon saltwater aquarium on top of it. Would you recommend Hydroshield or Life Proof? It is clear that vinyl is the go-to for the waterproof category, but I'm wondering if the durability and compaction. Thoughts?
I just discovered your channel tonight, and have watched a bit over an hour of your videos! Whatever option I select, I'll be sure to watch your install videos 👍
Have you tried the Pergo Defense + ?
This was so helpful!!!! Thank you!!!!!!
You're so welcome!
What do you recommend for best waterproof laminate?
Great job! And thanks for sharing
Hi,
Thanks for the video. I know that when the water resistant laminate is dunked in water, it is terrible, but what about when it's properly installed and you have a large spill? How does it hold up then? I believe it is the locking system grooves between the planks that are water resistant, and are supposed to keep the water from infiltrating the substrate. Just wondering if we have some water from snow in winter, a couple of little spills a week from water in the kitchen, a spilled glass of water or mil from the children, how does water resistant laminate hold up? We are considering purchasing the Goodfellow Phenix laminate, which has an AC5 wear rating and a technology called "aquastop" that's supposed to resist water for 24 hours. We currently have the Goodfellow Dubai SPC vinyl plank flooring installed in our bathroom for the past 3 months. It only has one scratch, all these months, with 7 people in our home using our one bathroom daily. But, I have no idea what caused that scratch, and we don't wear shoes in there and the children don't play with toys or drag things around in the bathroom, so I am concerned about it getting all scratched up if we put it in the rest of the house. The colour is sunset, a nice, light, warm brown and slight grey and darker tones, and it looks beautiful. But that one large scratch (it's about 5 inches long) bothers me because I don't know what caused it. Any advice? How is your laminate holding up? Do you know anything about the Goodfellow Phenix laminate and it's performance, scratch resistance, water resistance, etc.? It's a new product, and I can't seem to find any real consumer reviews or videos on either one of the Goodfellow products I mentioned, not even hardly a thing on the our bathroom flooring. Thanks, in advance.
Yeah, I'll go for tile. 😀
Where can I buy a fearless cat like that?
He is one pf a kind. Thousand of air miles and hotel stays all over the country traveling to cat shows have really made him special. He was a star in his younger days.
Hey Tim, I love your videos! You mention allot of brands but you Hebert mentioned Aquaguard.. how are they in comparison?
Which would you recommend for rental units??
Definitely LVP!
@@JonesKnows thanks! I was unsure because it’s for the upstairs bedrooms. I saw LVP dented more than laminate. But I was leaning toward LVP.
Hello, I leaning towards mohawk revwood select or plus laminate...any experience with that? Supposed to be more water resistant
I’ve been following your videos for awhile. Still deciding but we were considering nucore based on your recommendations. I’ve seen terrible reviews regarding heavy furniture leaving dents in the flooring. We plan to put protectors on the couch but I’ve seen reviews where even chairs are leaving dents. Do you have a brand recommendation that is tougher for this type of wear?
@Jones Knows whats your opinion on Lumbar Liquidators Aqual Seal 72 laminate flooring?
What made you go with laminate over vinyl?
Excellent! Best comparison video I have seen. Question: After the vinyl plank is dented deeply, does it eventually rebound?
Sometimes, if it’s really a deep dent then no! On the old type of vinyl you could bring out the dents with ice cubes. But the rigid core prevents that. Some dents will bounce back
@@JonesKnows I have learned there are different KINDS of Nucore and different kinds of Lifeproof. Some nucore has fragile connectors. While the Lifeproof wear layer varies from 6mil to 12mil to 22mil, each with a longer warranty period. LOVED your comparison and positive thoughts on lifeproof, but VERY CONCERNED when a home depot guy told me if I put down additional underlayment it will void the warranty. I really wanted to make it softer and less "clicky" underfoot. Suggestions?
Nucore recently changed their policy on underlayment and now allow THEIR sentinel brand underlayment. The life proof HAS a padding attached where Nucore has CORK so when you put a padding it will give you that result you are after. You can’t get that with Lifeproof because you NEVER want to put double of one thing and since lifeproof already HAS a padding double pad would make it TOO squishy which could cause your joints to open especially on the ends. And yes lifeproof will void the warranty if you put a second padding down. As long as you have a good waste percentage the fragile tongues on some isn’t too bad. What I would do is when I came across a plank with a damaged tongue put them aside in an empty box then return then. Floor n decor WILL take back damaged boards. None of my customers have ever had a problem getting their money back and there’s never been so many damages that we ran short on planks. Nucore has 2 kinds the regular Nucore and the Performance line which has a stone core (I do have a review video of it)
@@JonesKnows I saw your video and it's a great video for sure. The stone core Nucore is impressive. Problem is their performance line has very limited colors. Lifeproof has more to choose from and, as you have illustrated it has very good test results, but I have layed down 6 or 7 planks as a test and it just feels "thin" and "fake" under my feet.
Lol...Quite informative....including the humor
Thanks!
Hey Tim, can you do lifeproof on stairs?
Yes, but the stairnose are overlapping which Im not a big fan of. That means that they aren't flush and stick up above the flooring. I like to do solid oak treads and stain them to match the floor.
Thanks, I have cats so I’m afraid of staining real wood. Wood look tile down stairs has been great at handle pee and throw up. Can stained wood handle that?
I'm a cat person as well, you can usually see my favorite boy on my desk when I'm talking, he likes to jump in front of my camera. So once you stain the wood you then put coats of clear finish. I usually put 3 or 4 coats of finish. This is what protects the wood from water, scratches, stains, urine, ect. So if you want to be really protected I would suggest some extra coats. If you really want to be safe I would take a sample piece with extra finish and place it somewhere like under a litter box or in a place where it will get heavy abuse, to see how it will hold up.
Got ya. Thanks man. Really awesome that you help out. Also what are your thoughts about pergo timbercraft (they say that it’s completely waterproof) in a bathroom? Or should I just leave the tile that is already in there? I’m afraid of putting anything other than tile in a bathroom.
I put vinyl flooring in bathrooms over tile all the time but Timbercraft is laminate and if you read there warranty its kind of sketchy. Its only for 6 months on the Wet protection and it has tons of exclusions. I would suggest going with any of the waterproof vinyl's in a bathroom. I have submerged them I water for months with no damage. No laminate can say that. I have tested timbercraft and after a few days underwater it started to swell.
Wife wants to put new flooring. Looking at laminate, or Ceramic Tiles, that look like wood.. I'm worried about pet pee getting under the laminate.
The laminates nowadays have really tight locking systems so not much gets through unless it really sits on the floor for a while. But the waterproof vinyl is even better then the laminate for moisture.
At the end your cat with its tail up is spraying you, marking its territory.
What about sound proofing when walking on which is better,
He is fixed and wouldn't know how to even spray. He has flown all over the country and is very passive. Anytime you can put a good soundproofing down its always going to be better. The whisper pad from floor and décor is really good.
I don'tinstall flooring but I'm not cheap either 🤣
This was the most confusing video I’ve ever seen! Next time maybe label your samples.
Get to the point please
Was about to comment this....😅
I see you have a box of xp pergo in the background, I that what you used in the test? or pergo outlast?
