  • Back again and today i want to take an in depth look at the rulebook for the Epic Punic Wars for the latest offering in ‪@warlordgames‬ Epic range. I have already done a in depth look at the main hail caesar rules (link below) so rather than go through those again i want to focus on the Army Lists, Army Building, Army Special Rules and changes to the main rules.
    There is also a full combat example to have a look at the units in this book and how their rules work.

    Great overview. I was really eager to get a look at these rules. I have some thoughts now that I've gotten a basic look, so I apologize if this runs a little long.
    1. You didn't touch on it, but going back and looking at the Roman army diagram, there's a note about the Triarii that I really like. So, for the normal Hail Caesar Republican Roman list, you have to take units in a 2:2:1 ratio, 2 Hastati , 2 Principes, 1 Triarii. That's to represent the fact that the maniples of Triarii were half the size of a maniple of Hastati or Principes. Here it says, that the Triarii form a battle line formation with the bases directly behind each other instead of side to side, so half frontage, but still maintaining their stats. Visually, that will look much better on the table. Gameplay, not gonna lie, it kind of terrifies me as someone who will probably be playing most of the time as the Carthaginians, that there are now twice as many units of Triarii on the table, lol. Still, I enjoy a challenge!
    2. I like the manipular support and swap rules. I think that will definitely help encourage the Roman player to maintain their army formation as long as possible into the fight to take advantage.
    3. I really like some of the special rules for the armies and commanders, and will probably start using some of them in my normal Hail Caesar games.
    4. I'm glad to see that Rome's Italian allies are still organized in the manipular system in these rules. I was wondering if they would have to use the Italian infantry from the allied list. It just means they'll get a more colorful paint scheme then the Roman maniples, just like I do for the 28mm figures. With the amount of Italian infantry in the Hannibal set, there's enough to build a small Samnite army to fight the Samnite Wars.
    5. Finally, this does not release soon enough! I'm so hyped!

      Some excellent comments. I'm also really excited to get a game in. I think the manipula swap is a great way of adding the flavour in. Hopefully it strikes that balance between history and game.
      I'll be interested to see more observations as we get closer to a game 👍

    Very helpful indeed and thank you so much for doing this video. I think WLG should have made the book available before the miniatures are released so that “newbies” can bone up on what’s what and what to buy/field. Your little men look beautifully painted. Please keep the videos coming and while AAR are always fun, sprinkling them with a little rule eduction or reasons for doing something (a move, a grouping of units) is always helpful. Thanks!!

If you're interested in the game then maybe check out some of the Wars of the Roses or First Crusade battle reports on the channel, they give a good idea of how it plays.

    Thanks for that I had been curious. Have been gaming with Republican Romans under the old army lists and find them very overpowered. I think making the the small unit 2/3 of a standard width is a great idea. Two small Roman units with pila will make mince meat out of almost any unit quite quickly. This way one must support the other 7 dice rather than combining for 10. The Romans still stand an excellent chance of winning in a long fight because of the manipular exchange rule but they at least should not be able to regularly rout Phalanxes in one turn.

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I totally agree, this will force people to use the maniples to switch before they become disordered. Also, a unit caught without support is done for 😁

    Great run through, I really appreciated the combat demonstration at the end. I noticed in the rules they have Roman Triarii/Princip/Hastati, and Latin T/P/H. They also have Italian Allied Infantry. Are the Latin T/P/H the same as Italian Allied Infantry, or different? Or is the Latin v. Roman designation merely two different set of stats for the same T/P/H models?

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching. I think they are just different stats for the same models. But you cannot mix them into divisions with standard Roman H/P/T 👍

    Isn't in the manipular formation the units are arranged in a checkerboard formation, so you wouldn't have a unit right behind or to the side but a unit on each diagonal? Even the manipular rule on support states support only on the diagonals. This is how units can swap out so easily, I could be wrong but that's my understand as a Napoleonic's player :). Looking forward to getting into epic HC.

    • @7thson726

      @@7thson726 Yeah, and the minis for this game are simply astounding, it'll give me a way to play my favourite rules at a scale more suited for large battles. Victrix and Warlord's 28/32mm Ancients are great and a joy to paint but playing truly big actions in 32mm needs a lot of space. I think that's my main gripe with Priestly's family of rules for Warlord - it's not that the rules are bad, it's that they're kind of written for him and his mates who have mansions with sprawling tabletops to plonk down their extensive miniature collections onto. I can get a 6x4 foot table set up in my flat, but that's about it. The shift in scale really helps to play with more units, reserves, space for maneuver etc.

    Does the rule book talk about small vs standard unit battles? In the regular rules, a small unit is half the size of a standard unit, and so 2 small units can attack 1 standard sized unit. In the Epic version, a small unit is 2 bases and so a charge by 2 small units would not fit well (4 bases vs 3 bases).

    • @sartanawillpay7977
      @sartanawillpay7977 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      This change makes more sense in my opinion. A small unit has about 2/3 of the fighting power of a standard so 2/3 of the width is a good idea.

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It's exactly the same as the standard rules but they replace the images with bases. I have always found this open to interpretation as the rules say the 2nd unit fights if it's centre front is in contact otherwise it supports the original unit. We've always found that 2 small units then can't mob a standard but can both attack a large unit. But then I've always worked my units out in bases, even at 28mm
      Hope that helps 😁👍

    Ripping run-through. Big fan of Hail Caesar but admit to being stone-cold on the 'epic' idea. Do you think that the Manipular exchange gaining the charge bonus is to much?
