Our Adopted Dog Darla Crying When Her New Mom Left the 1st Time

- My daughter, Lydia, has been wanting a dog forever. We just adopted "Darla" a few days ago at the, "Indy Mega Adoption Event," in Indianapolis. Darla has been a GREAT dog and has already gotten close with Lydia and the whole family.
When my wife and daughter were leaving to see a movie this afternoon, I was surprised at Darla's reaction. It was the first time Lydia has left her since she came home with us. Darla heard my wife's van leaving, jumped up on the couch (where she isn't supposed to be) to look out the window, and started whining as the van faded out of sight.
I grabbed my cell phone and got some video to show Lydia when she got home :)

When the dog first stared at the phone I thought she was thinking, "Hey! Maybe she'll call!"

Once The wonderful Darla, was dying to be adopted, now she is just dying for her mom to get home. Thank you , for saving Darla. So many dogs like her wait weeks to months for thier happy ending. Only to end up being killed for space.

Dog's lack 'object permanence', much like a baby does. For them, when you leave the house or room, after a certain time it's pretty much like you've died. Some dogs are more sensitive to this feeling (especially if they've been surrendered or abandoned before) and will 'search' for their owner until they come home, at which point the dog is super happy. That's basically why your dog is so happy to see you when you get home - and why this one is so upset that it's owner has gone. They don't know that you've only gone out, for them *every time you leave is the last time*.

It really is.. Have you ever heard the story about the Japanese dog Hachiko? They have a statue dedicated to this very real dog in Tokyo, celebrating how loyal he was. There's a movie about it, but I warn you it's heartbreaking (as is the story).
A loyal dog will wait for you through everything, no matter what, right up to the point where it dies in its waiting place.. Which is why it's so abhorrent to me, so incredibly disgusting to me, that people would just leave their dogs, or not even put anything about what to do with them in their wills, etc. I'm only 28, but even I have made plans for my beloved dog should I and my husband unexpectedly pass. I don't even have a will, but I certainly have THAT done.
The worst part is that if the dogs never saw their owner's body, they have no understanding that their owner is dead at all. They just know their owner (and home) are 'gone'. Which is why they wait - because they don't understand no one is ever coming back to get them. They don't even realize they've been abandoned and now have no home, usually for a long ass time, which is why they tend to be so much more distrusting of humans. Once they realize it, it's probably absolute agony for them. My dog would probably pine himself to death, he doesn't even like it when I leave the house (though he just mopes in his bed by the door). Which is probably why it's so incredibly heart wrenching for me to watch these videos...

Awe she probably separation anxiety from her previous owner just abandoning her and now she's probably afraid that she will too but it's great to see someone give her a second chance
Wow. She is such a smart and loyal dog. It is heartbreaking to imagine this dog in a shelter with so much love to give a family. Thank you for adopting her and making her part of your family.
awe just a few days together and you can tell how strong her loyalty is to her mother.
your family did a beautiful job for your dog. i wanna thank you for your love. whenever i see a dog, it reminds me of my last dog, happy. like her name, i was happy with her even though my childhood was struggling with a beaten mom and extreme stress for my sis and me. she was a real relief for us. she was at home to show how happy she was just 'cause of my existence.
She will protect & love your daughter for Darla's life time.

This was so special, yet so sad in a way! She is a lucky dog that will learn her mama will go away , but come home to her wonderful dog, waiting for her!! Sweet!

This reminds me so much of my puppy back home. She would always follow me around and jump on me whenever I arrive home and would always want to go with me when I get in the car and go somewhere. But the time came when I had to go overseas, she just stayed put out in on the porch and howled and whined. It's like she knew I was going somewhere far and for a long time. It was the most heartbreaking thing I have ever witnessed and watching this made me want to cry...

I had a beautiful, awesome, wonderful, handsome, gorgeous Black German Shepherd Dog.... He was so excited when I came home... I miss him so much even some time I dream him... Now its gone. He died from cancer. I have several photos and videos with him, but I can`t watch them... Some time I'm dreaming that he has revived and he is healthy. Beautiful dreams, sad story.

My dog does the same... Except she full on starts loudly crying and it makes me so sad I have to comfort her and cry with her.
It's called separation anxiety. But least you cuddle to your dog. They are such loving loyal animals. So much better then humans.
You need to practice leaving the house with ur dog wait for it to calm down then leave then when the whining stops come back in and reward the dog and repeat over and over - its not healthy for the dog to act like that while ur gone its exhausting my puppy was the same couldn't even take bin out in the morning before I got him out of his cage without him trying to claw his way out and whining now he lays in his cage playing with his toy and I give him a treat when I come back in to reward him

Dogs are so loyal, all the do is give their love and they deserve more love in return. And no wonder they have abandonment issues from all the ex owners who dumped them before, i really hope this is her forever home.
My dad had a hunting beggle named lady. She was 30 miles away and she found her way back home by smell and ambition love for our family.
My 1st real pet dog Skye would CRY whenever I left her, even when she was around another person and/or dogs. It was a very long lonely mournful sound, I had 16 1/2 wonderful years with her. Noone that heard it, had ever heard any animal sound quite like it. We got her for my now deceased partner on Xmas 1993, but she decided that I was her master within minutes of getting her. On the 1st night with her she was out in the laundry area on her own bed, it took just 15 minutes for her to work her way onto our bed and that is where she was to sleep at night for all of her 16 1/2 years. except for the time she had to have an op to remove a growth on her face and jaw which was affecting her eating, the vet did an amazing job in removing it too.
I think about her a lot and know how blessed I/we was to have had such an amazing wonderful loyal pet.
How dogs can just love us .....so much
You show the stress of this dog looking for mommy, yet you fail to show the happiness when she returned. Does the dog act like this when you leave?
+Mary Lawson After having Darla for a year and a half, she doesn't still whine when my daughter (or anyone) leaves, but she is still excited when we get back. ps. I wasn't available to record them getting back that day.
Bless her heart. They're always glad to see us come home. My cat Buddy would cry if he couldn't find me. Had him 20 years. Sure miss him.
+Mary Lawson -- Sorry to read about the loss of your Buddy. Special cats and dogs put a special paw print deep in our hearts. Buddy can never be replaced, but I hope (if you haven't already) that you'll make room for another critter.
+drwinston Thanks. Appreciate your thoughts. In my 70's and have asthma so maybe my pet days are over. I put off my knee replacement because I didn't want Buddy to go through trauma.
We adopted a nine year old beagle long ago and she stayed jolly for another seven, even with cancer! Sometimes adopting a wine-pet (aged to perfection) is a great match because energy level is probably going down and often they are potty trained at the very least. Hope your knee is working out for you!

Your daughter gave her everything she longed for : love, comfort, food/water, a home where she is loved. She doesn't want to lose that so suffers with separation anxiety. After all humans have clearly betrayed her trust before so she clings on to what she loves now.
i have a black lab/pit. he goes crazzzy for me. he loves that im the only one that plays with him and trains him. when im in the room with my son and i leave the door close he lays down at the door until i open it. and when he has to go potty he actually whines and knocks or scratch on my door. dogs are just so cute, sweet and truly loves you unconditionally... I cant see why anybody would mistreat a dog for the fun of it. its just sick. i get a little allergic reaction everytime he scratches me while im playing. i get like hives but i don't care. i love dogs and always will even if my allergic worsens over time(i hope not). but still i will never abandon or mistreat them.

After reading these comments, I realize I never knew how many people find separation anxiety cute and endearing. I bet the dog doesn't think so. So many wanted to know what happened when the owner returned? the dog probably lost its shit because she was so stress and worked up about the owners return that she couldn't relax or function until the owner was back and huge release of stress and anxiety. Imagine losing your kid in the store for a quick second that anxious feeling that you feel when you see your kid... you're pretty God darn happy to see him at that moment. Emotional release due to release of anxiety.
To many ppl dogs are a part of their lives but to dogs we are their life

Simply amazing! Talk about loyalty, that beautiful fur baby just displayed her connection and love of a human being. To a degree that people cannot even come close. But still there are sick people out there who heartlessly abuse, injure, starve, and kill these sensational creations of God.

bernedett rose Sorry to disagree but all that does it that the new dog might also start to do it as well. In which case they will have worked dogs with separation anxiety. Best to deal with the one dog first. I know from experience.
that truly does not work ... in my own experience. I got my girl another little girl, thinking that it would easy her anxiety. it never did, my older dog never made any kind of bond with the other one they were not a pack, she just kept attacking her, was constantly jealous if we pet the other dog, always just watching or cheking herout whenever the other dog moved, what if we were giving her attention or something. her anxiety only got worse ...
wake up kiddo Luckily my experience wasn't as bad. I got my dog a friend and they hit it off straight away which is great but now his anxiety has gotten worse and the second dog has now started barking etc when I leave the house. So I agree, getting a second dog is really not the answer
debbie peter well, my dog was quite old, she had suffered through a trauma when one large dog - female with puppies attacked her, she took my little, 30cm tall girl into her teeth and ... well, you know when a dog takes a toy in his mouth and starts to furiously jerk with its head (and toy in mouth) from one side to another to tear it up. that huge dog did that to my girl. she was traumatized and her mentality got worse with passing years. she was violent when no one was home, but she could not bare being with anyone but me, my bf or my mum. she was crying and attacking (not people, but furniture and stuff) if left with anyone else, no matter how much she loved that other person normally ... she even attacked us when she had her episode during storm or when she heard firecrackers or any sound even remotely sounding like that, I mean she went berserk when someone popped a chewing gum bubble or when someone got a message on facebook/messenger. but we had to go to work, all of us. and she was so strongly bonded to me, she had a horrible separation anxiety. I tried everything, even antidepressants, nothing worked. I could not even tear her down by going outside with her to run with her before leaving, so she would sleep through my absence, because she had a very weak heart that was constantly worsened by her everyday stress, so she could not even be sedated. in the end, I had to put her down after having her for 12 years. her state was a safety threat, she started to dig into walls, if she hit the cables, she could have blown up our flat, killing people living around us. it still hurts. not that much that I put her down, because that was necessary in such situation, but it hurts what happened to her, to her mentality, what she turned into. she was in pain and sorrow daily, heavily suffering. now she is in peace.
That's horrible. RIP...I hope she is now at ease in doggy heaven. I had my last dog for 18 years so I know how it feels when they die.

This is normal for shelter dogs! Mine still screams when I leave her at home. I got her another doggy friend and it's helped a lot.
My mixed pitbull which is 4 months, cries whenever I leave the house. But when my mom does he doesn't cry at all. He is so attached which i find really cute
