The Match of the Day episode broadcast on 16th January 1983, featuring highlights of the previous day's games between West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool and Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday.
Liverpool were a winning machine during this era. I believe that they won the league for 3 seasons on the bounce - 82, 83 and 84 I think. It was a great time to be going to the game.
John Wile was 35 years old on that day. For reference, thats the same age as David Silva is now. Fair to say players looked a lot older than their age back in those days.
Sometimes we forget such humble beginnings...Allardyce at Bolton,Coppell at United(Palace and Man City manager) Joe Royale (Man.City player to Everton manager) etc...
In the good old days when the 1st division actually was the first tier and the 2nd division actually was the second tier. Proper football played by decent blokes on a Saturday afternoon. Before money and diving ruined the game.

Much better programme in those days. Good long highlights, limited action replays and no 'in-depth' analysis after each game.

Fun Fact: BBC Breakfast Time started the next day
I was a Liverpool fan between 77-86. The Bob Paisley teams were amazing!
