Great upload. I remember watching the Norwich highlights and Chris Woods brilliant late stop. MOTD ran a 'Save of the Season' competition that year and Woods won it with that effort.
Charlie Nicholas would indeed move from Celtic in the summer of 1983 to Arsenal. As I’m not an Arsenal fan I didn’t watch them that often but it’s safe to say that he didn’t really live up to his potential with the gunners. And big Micky Droy playing for Chelsea, the definition of an old school central defender!! And we still haven’t hosted a World Cup in England since 1966!! That’s crazy!!
The way that the fortunes of Fulham and Chelsea went for the rest of the 80’s from the game shown here was unbelievable. Fulham went from being above Chelsea in 82/83 to not knowing if they would have a ground to play in just a few years later. Chelsea, meanwhile, won promotion the following season and didn’t do too badly for the next few seasons. Until 87/88 when they got relegated again.
1 - it’s brilliant to see a Match of the Day with a second division match first up. 2 - We run a sports ground for local kids and I’d be annoyed with my groundstaff if my parks pitch looked like this. Did they not know about drainage in the 80s? I wonder at what point pitches stopped being crap
Dan Preston it was probably not until the late 90’s that pitches started to get sorted, the clubs either didn’t have the money to sort their pitch out or there was some external factor like the pitch always in the shade or bad problems with undersoil heating etc. I know my teams pitch, Manchester United, was terrible in the 80’s. Some games I used to attend at Old Trafford back then was like watching football on a ploughed field. I think that was something to do with undersoil heating. The problems with the pitch at Old Trafford existed well into the 90’s.
Yeah Dan, it was expected back then that you got lush grassy pitches for 2 months maximum, then rapid deterioration in the pitches, (almost unplayable during winter) then tattie fields in the Spring, it was the test of any championship contenders to battle through.
It was like the Somme out there! Could today's pampered overpaid dilettantes play on these pitches. No chance. They would take you to court for player abuse! In the winter, depending on the heavens, players just got on with it & you got great games & skill with the odd dilettante wearing black tights if too frosty (yes, you Weller ex Chelsea, we dont forget that as a Leics player!) Pitches back then added to the game. Now its dead boring. Zzzz
Great Video! Total Nostalgia!
Jimmy and Bob with the ‘just stepped off the golf course’ look
MOTD quite often had second division games on especially at the business end of the season. Can anyone even imagine that in this day and age?!!
I know... shame... we too busy shutting a " super league" down

11:24 Indirect free-kick for obstruction in the area: you don't see many of them these days!
yes agreed.
That's because that law doesn't really exist anymore

@@mrkipling2201 spot on. Even in the mid to late 90s I remember the Villa Park pitch in particular looking like an allotment.
it is interesting to see the players can still play good football on that kind of pitch and still no complaint. now?
@@mohdazmi10 it's just how things were. No point complaining if all the pitches are terrible. You just learn to play on what's in front of you.

Chris Woods, Norwich legend.
Beautiful x infinity. Superb, sailor.
