At some point they brought in some issues wich they need to fix and they will do that. This update fixed some issues for sure... but they have to do more.
I went to an arboretum the other day to photograph flowers. I had the X-T5 in AF-S mode since I didn’t have a moving subject. The camera would not focus properly within the AF box. What the heck, the latest firmware update now has compromised shooting of still photography. It’s the first time I’ve had a problem with the X-T5 having focusing issues in AF-S mode. These weren’t even “false positives” images. The camera’s autofocus wouldn’t even give me a green box AF confirmation when focusing on a single, subject flower. I noticed that my focusing box was placed directly on the flower while the camera focused on the background space. Recomposing the scene and half pressing the focusing/shutter release button did not help.
Negative. I was well within the minimum focusing distance. It felt like the camera wasn’t even trying to acquire focus from the green focusing box. Soon after, my camera completely froze with a black out screen. I took out the battery to reset camera. Focusing seemed OK after that. I suspecting bugs in the new update.
Good news! I just took my camera to Venice Beach and did some street photography using the X-T5 in continuous auto focus mode at the skateboard park. The camera worked flawlessly with the tracking of the moving subject and acquiring focus quickly. I was impressed with the speed of the camera to re-acquire my subject even after the skateboarder left my field of view at the bottom of a pool and reappearing into the field of view back at the top of the pool lip. I need to examine the sharpness of focus within Capture One. I believe 1/1,800 of a second will be ample enough to handle the motion blur. I was highly impressed! I generally do more single shot auto focus with recomposing my scene with using focus lock.
The real tests are those that are done in the real world under normal circumstances and not contrived or trying to do something you wouldn’t normally photograph. For me most of my stuff is single focus and zone focus street photography and most of the time I have no issues. But you do have to use the new linear motors and the newer lenses to get this kind of quality. Or you have to use limit focus, like I do on the 56 1.2 when upgrading to the newer version, which surprisingly gives me much better accuracy Overall. I’m not doing sports or fashion photography so I don’t really use the continuous focus.
Forgot to mention that I used the 18mm for this test. I haven’t checked with the 56 yet but will do. The only issue is that it is hard to reproduce non “controlled” tests. I agree with you, that is what matters most though. Cheers!
totally agree, I use the camera in this way myself. I don't have any issues, but I don't use cf very often. Pal2tech did a test just after the release, and he said it was OK, but I'm sure it's going to be use case specific. It also shows ai is not always perfect.
I've come to the conclusion that a lot of commenters are probably the same camera users who disparrage those who shoot in AUTO, but still expect the camera to do everything for them: Maybe a spell using a film SLR would make them realise just how much of the old skills have been lost, and how much easier it's all going to be as AI takes over.
why would you buy a new fuji knowing that they have never ever got the autofocus sorted. this pipe dream of firmware fixes belies how their false marketing and reliance of our fondness of their color science is effective in convincing people a fix is just around the corner. fuji - your camera bodies, build quality and colors are great but your autofocus is the worst of any major camera manufacturer and you should give everyone back their money. just blatant lying and untrustworthy utube reviews. testing one in a camera store means nothing - all the tracking and hits are mostly false so unless you checkout your memory card at home DONT get sucked in
I do product photography with Fuji cameras and it certainly does that easier than street photography where autofocus needs to be more quick and precise usually.

Recomposing the scene and half pressing the focusing/shutter release button did not help.
not within minimum focus distance maybe?
I downgraded xh2s to q
1.03 per @advard and Fuji is on the clock for firmware 8.0 cause this "new" update still sucks
Why after all these years can’t they just copy Sony’s system?
Knowlegde
I've come to the conclusion that a lot of commenters are probably the same camera users who disparrage those who shoot in AUTO, but still expect the camera to do everything for them:
Maybe a spell using a film SLR would make them realise just how much of the old skills have been lost, and how much easier it's all going to be as AI takes over.
why would you buy a new fuji knowing that they have never ever got the autofocus sorted. this pipe dream of firmware fixes belies how their false marketing and reliance of our fondness of their color science is effective in convincing people a fix is just around the corner. fuji - your camera bodies, build quality and colors are great but your autofocus is the worst of any major camera manufacturer and you should give everyone back their money. just blatant lying and untrustworthy utube reviews. testing one in a camera store means nothing - all the tracking and hits are mostly false so unless you checkout your memory card at home DONT get sucked in
Fujifilm are just ok for street photography and that’s it
I do product photography with Fuji cameras and it certainly does that easier than street photography where autofocus needs to be more quick and precise usually.
I fixed my Fujifilm issues by getting a Leica Q3
On a Leica Q3 the AFC is even worse😂
Fujifilm should give themselves a year and fix their autofcus and also stop releasing newer cameras. FUJIFILM, WHAT A JOKE OF A COMPANY.
It is great AF if you take the pictures of ded people.
no, you can easily get false positives even in that scenario. or the AF will latch onto something obscure in the background and not budge from it...
The autofocus is better than your spelling.
