It's videos like this that we all learn how many people rely heavily on auto focus. And no, I'm NOT saying that's bad or criticising anyone! Anyway, I shoot Fuji, and yes for paid work, because it's fun. And for the insane amount of creativity I have with the film sims and the RAW converter, etc. Anyway, not knocking other brands, Fuji is just more interesting to me. X-T5, X-H2s, X-H1.

I own several Sony cameras (A1, A7SIII, FX6...). The XT5 is the camera I enjoy shooting with the most when it's not paid work. I tried several times to use my Fuji cameras professionally both for photos and videos, but I came to the conclusion that the autofocus issues prevent me to have full confidence in it. The XT5 is a fantastic every day/family/travel/casual portraits camera, but I can't rely on it for paid work most of the time.

When will Sony shooters stop talking about auto-focus as if it is the only thing that matters? I use my Fuji XH2s more than my Canon R6II and Panasonic S5iix for weddings with excellent results. Fuji's auto-focus is no doubt not as good as Sony's, but it is good enough for any professional work. To me, image quality counts, and Fuji does not disappoint. The dynamic range alone on Fuji is enough to consider Fuji. I use my xh2s for video only.

@@namnguyenngoc3966sorry to disagree, but it is not. There are a lot of issues related to Fujifilm AF besides the missed focus in shots: there is the god awful lack of linearity when racking focus (it’s always hunting and stepping), the settings are unnecessarily convoluted, it makes linear motor lenses perform below USM lenses do in 10 year old Sony bodies, and on top of that it gives false positives.
I’m a Fuji lover and I have been for a while, but I’m so glad people are finally calling Fuji AF by its name: a hot mess that can only be fixed by releasing a new mount. Oh, and by firing the entirety of the software development department. But that’s a discussion for another moment.

Stop dreaming ! I shot Fuji during 8 years with an XT1 and then XT2. Even the newer released cameras seem to still have the same kind of autofocus issues. The autofocus works better on the newer models of course but it almost feels like it’s due to more powerfull and rapid processors or sensor in the case on the XH2S for example than real algorithm improvements. The failure of Fuji in delivering an autofocus on par with Sony or Canon made me switch to Sony. Also as said by others the price. When Fuji released the XH2S at £2,500 nakef body, that opened up my horizons with the a7IV in the same price range despite Sony’s tendency to overprice their own cameras (IMHO). I finally ended up with the A7RV but that’s another story 😂

Coming from a Sony system for 8 years & switching to an XT5 in Dec of '23, I find the Fuji menu system very refreshing & more intuitive than Sony! The one thing I cannot explain is that my fuji XT5 makes me want to go out & shoot & create an image! My Sony felt more like a "work" camera. I totally agree that Fuji needs to up their game on the focusing system!!! If I need to hit a tack sharp focus on my subject, I switch to a single point & move the box to my subject's eye. I can't comment on the XT5 as I don't own one. I do shoot with an XS10, an XH1 and an XT1. I generally shoot single shot AF (though sometimes with MF assist) and over all the images I have taken (only about 10,000 over less than 2 years of ownership) I can honestly say hardly any were not in focus. Also I'm generally shooting landscapes. So, having read all the comments about AF maybe the conclusion is that the reliability depends on the use you put the camera to. I think for the average amateur it's a fine system and I just love picking up one or maybe two of my cameras and taking pics with them.

Great Video, great photos, thank you for this! There are two ways to get Fuji Raw-Files generally sharper: 1) Using Capture One instead of Lightroom (I tried this but I missed the AI-tools and Photoshop too much. But if you don't need this, Caputure One files are significally sharper than LR-Files. 2) Using DXO Pure Raw as the Raw-Converter. It's a LR-Plugin and actually the main job is to denoise but it also handels the RAW-Flies like Capure One does, so they are way sharper with any ISO. I love this workflow, cause it produces very sharp images without noise (you can go up to 10.000 ISO) while still working with LR. Disadvantage: The files are getting very big (120 MB) and it takes 10-15 sec. per file.

Yes it’s heavier but it is also built way better and you can save the extra weight when using smaller lenses like f2, which is comparable to f1.4 lenses on crop sensors regarding light and field of depth.
Btw did you switch fully to Fuji or just for travel? I mean do you still work with the Sony system? Because that was the main reason why I watched your videos and what you did with the raw files from it.

A Full Frame sensor with a very low MP count will yield great readout at high ISO with low noise, because less MP means less pixels, thus less artifacts during lowlight situations. That's why the FX3 has 10MP for example.
      Another example are Fuji's 24 & 26MP APS-C sensors - they're essentially 1.5x the FX3 (10MP * 1.5 crop = 25MP "equivalent", at least in terms of noise).

I have the X-T3 and for the most part really enjoy the camera. But the C-AF can be a concern. The biggest issue I find is that it is *very* lens dependent. Any newer lens with a Linear Motor seems to work great. However my favorite lens is the original 23mm f1.4 and it has the older focusing style. And at 1.4 it misses many photos that I try to get of my kids. Those buggers move fast.

My main camera is A7 iv, I had bought xt5 as an inspiration and boy did it deliver, but.. it’s just unreliable. I’ve missed so many good shots because of the constant struggles with its autofocus. At the same time Sony just works with almost zero mistakes in my use cases. So I switched from xt5 to A7C II and a couple of lightweight G lenses (24 and 40) and I’m pretty happy. The autofocus is fantastic, even better than A7iv, the aesthetics of the silver version are nowhere near xt5, but it’s still looks good. I really wanted the whole concept of having fuji as a second system to work, but it’s way to frustrating to have a camera that inspires you to shoot more, but fails you on a regular basis.

Nice review and great pictures. For the apparent softness of some images, as some body else already told it could be caused by lightroom, who is not optimised for the xtrans structure of the sensor. Another tip is to set to -4 the noise reduction. For Fujifilm the 0 is actually applying some noise reduction who could give some more softness to the images. The "real 0" is -4.

agree a 100% and it is easy to spot when you shoot RAW+JPEG on XT5 and upload both to lightroom and then side by side you see that your uploaded Jpeg all of the sudden looks sharper and more detailed than a RAW next to it. One thing to do is to convert the Raw file to DNG with Lightroom enhance function, that creates a better sharper raw file.

My impression of the third image is that it is back focused as you can see sharp hairs at a greater distance than the eyes/face. If Fuji cameras were full frame they would have no competitors in the market. That's my main deal breaker.

Nice video and delivery. Very nice.
I have a couple XT5’s with the Viltrox 27 and 75 lenses and use those mainly for photos (really like these), and an XH2s with a speed booster and manual lenses.
The reason I keep using Fuji is the overall image quality and colors. I use a set of LUMIX S5 II bodies for all my talking heads that require AF.
I just can’t rely on Fuji’s AF for my client work.
Keep up your videos. Nicely done!

Yes. v3.01 which came end of April was a serious downgrade in AF performance, which got semi-fixed with v4.00 last week. That said, v2.10 is still the most reliable. I've downgraded after both updates back to v2.10 via the help of reddit.

For Fuji photos to be sharper, you need to stop up from 1.4 to 2 depending on the lens, also turn noise reduction to -4. For last few months there was a great AF bug that fuji released that has been resolved. It's still not the greatest AF compared with other companies.

Sadly all my Fuji bodies XT2, XH1, X100 have had expensive repairs. The 50-140 f2.8 is now not sending correct aperture to either body. The XH2 I borrowed from Fuji Australia died immediately. Great lenses optically but would never rely on the system. 50 years of Nikon - faultless

I was trying to decipher which strength NISI filters you were using on the lens your video but couldn't. Thanks from Cairo

I find that Fuji RAW files are better handled using DXO PhotoLab software. If you are using Lightroom or Camera RAW that may account for the sharpness problem. Adobe has never figured out how to process Fuji RAW files and it seems like they don't care.

There’s apparently an issue with the High ISO Noise Reduction setting that causes a little softness/blur. I’m still testing mine out, but try setting this to -4 as it seems that it can even affect normal ISO shots. Loving my wee X-T5 and as you point out, it really gets me out shooting.

I'm also using Sony and Fuji and may be switching back to Fuji completely lol. The resolution on my A7Riii always amazes me even now but it looks digital, However, the old X-T10 I just bought as a travel camera is reminding me it's not all about mega pixels! PS You need to get Sony A7R, A9 cameras to get 500,000 shutter life and a nicer sound too.

Balanced vid. Glorious gripe on AF “false focus acquired flag”. Have experienced issue you described w/single point. Did some experimenting w/well lit foreground and background subjects having defined edges. Seems to “favor” horizontal over vertical edge subject. Tried “Dutch tilting” camera to see if it was more accurate w/a diagonal line - no difference.
In fairness, manual focus w/split-screen/pentaprism works just fine. Gotta try it, Gerard. Cheers!

I've heard many complaints about some of the recent firmware updates for the X-T5 (2.10 and 3.01 exhibited worse autofocus performance, most notably), so that may have been what caught you out with that softness when the camera insisted you were in focus. Version 4.0 of the firmware was released on June 27th (it also includes Reala Ace), and I'm curious to hear if that solved that for you!

    I hate myself 😝
I should have purchased an extended warranty on my brand new X-T5 camera.
Long story short... After ownership of the X-T5 for one year and nine months the camera is in need of repair because of mediocre average built quality. I sent the camera into an official Fuji repair tech who told me (3-weeks later) it will cost $210.00 (US) dollars to replace the sticky on/off power switch.
Yes, $210.00 dollars to replace a manufacturer faulty switch on a LESS THAN 2-year old camera 😡
Before anyone attack me I'd like to say that the camera was very well taken care of. i.e., It was never stumped on by a pack of domesticated Indian elephants. It was never used up in the wintry Swiss alps. It was never used as a weapon while walking through unsavory neighborhoods in Los Angeles. It was absolutely never taken into the bath tub with me! In fact, I took better care of my camera (Fujifilm X-T5) more so than of myself.
My advice to all interested purchasers of any Fuji camera product, BY EXTENDED WARRANTIES! on the 400mm lens, the X-T20 and the X-T5. Important: do REGISTER your new toys so you'll get direct email notices on all new firmware updates.

Hey mate, great insight into the X-T5! I'm currently thinking to upgrade to this camera and want to use it for astrophotography (not professional) because of the higher resolution compared to other APS-C's from Fujifilm. Do you think the noise would be a deal breaker for this?

    • @acidtears
      @acidtears 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

You should be fine, since astrophotography works through long exposure, and the high MP sensor increases noise only at higher ISOs. What system are you currently shooting with?
