Several users here and elsewhere have reported difficulty installing the update via the 'old' method of doing so--put file on card, update from card. I am one of them. Using the file from the Fuji download page, the camera sees it and declares that there is no update available. It also writes a .downloadcr extension to the file on the card. Never could get it to work, even removing the lens and trying just body only. What finally worked was the X App. I downloaded v4 through it to the phone, and then the phone to the camera. It takes forever at 104 MB, but it finally did the update.
When I first watched the Fuji announcement, and they pushed a new film sim (didn't even mention AF!), I thought 'oh, here we go, let's paper over the cracks with something else'. I was pleasantly surprised when I went to the download page to see that 'fix on AF area for pupil detection' was on the list. Needless to say, I've updated my X-H2 and happen to have my kid's school sports day today, so it'll be a perfect test to see what improvements have been made.
Now we just need Fujifilm to fix the age-old problem of out of focus shots when using wide angle lenses in AF-S mode and focusing on something at infinity. You are welcome to check this out Chris, there are numerous threads on DPReview should you be interested.
Awesome news about the Eye auto detect. I has stopped using that because of the error types you mentioned when shooting live events, preferring Face detection instead. It was weird when imaging a speaker at a podium that the focus point was on the microphone, not the eye. Have to give it a try next time. Thanks Rick.
Thank you again! I always check your channel when the firmware bubble pops up! Thank you for the YEARS of Fuji info and help! Been watching since the xt3
I discovered a quirk while updating my X-T5 firmware... I kept getting an error message that no firmware was found on the card. And yes, I was on the "BODY" selection! After reformatting the card and starting over I got the same error. I did this several times.... Then... I noticed I had a third party "manual only" lens attached (TTARTISAN)... I swapped back to the kit lens that came with the camera, selected the "S" option on the front selector and yep... It worked fine!
Same thing here, but I have not solved it yet. Using a Tamron 18-300mm zoom, and firmware updates have not been an issue in the past. I will try this as 'body only' and see what happens.
Hi Chris....great video as usual. When you demonstrated the eye detection autofocus fix, what was the release priority set at--"release" or "focus"???--(-I suspect it was "focus", but I'd like to be sure...getting this kind of focus right has been a challenge!)...thanks.
The autofocus fix took so long that I ordered it three days ago S5 ii х. Fuji, I love you. I have three cameras. 3, 30 AND xh2s. And the latter has the worst autofocus. The matrix stabilizer did not live up to expectations. Fuji, you ruined everything.
Reala ACE is just a marketing trick to lure you into buying new camera (i.e. adding it on XT-5 but not on XT-3 or XT-4). You can get any film simulation you want with any Fuji camera in Lightroom, as long as you have LR version that already implements that given simulation. There's a simple and old procedure (requires file editing) to unlock film any Fuji simulation on any Fuji camera. Drawbacks: you have to shoot RAW (obviously - so that simulation is applied during RAW processing on computer, not in the JPG created directly by camera) and this procedure has to be re-implemented after each LR update (files get overwritten during upgrades).
The autofocus issue was driving me crazy. So much so, that I would leave my XT5 on the shelf when shooting wildlife. Hopefully this update actually resolves the issue.
As always you're a reliable source of up to date, helpful, candid, and entertaining Fuji information ! Many thanks for that and please keep up the great work. Slainte !
Great tutorial! Can you persuade Fuji to fix another autofocus bug: X-T5… if you press the joystick it re-centres the focus area to the middle of the screen. Great. But this only works once you have lightly touched the shutter release first. If you turn the camera on and (without pressing the shutter release) try to re-centre the focus box by pressing the joystick it doesn’t work. Very annoying! Please have a word with Fuji
Saturday morning with nothing to do (very rare) .. thought I'd take the T5 out for a stroll and remembered there was a firmware update and a new sim.. Knew I could count on you for a video.. Maybe Fuji doesn't appreciate you, but the Fuji community certainly does
Its better, but at a distance the camera sure has issues detecting faces and eyes, and i'm only talking 10 feet away. Its better, but not necessarily fixed fully!
Very good video, as always and nice to see your beautiful dog. But my autofocus on the X-T5 hasn't really gotten any better. I only use the camera in AF-C mode (children, family, dog + 16-55 f2.8). In particular, the eye autofocus is simply no longer reliable. Even with firmware 4.0, the focus is in many cases somewhere other than on the eye, even though the eye is recognized and a green box is there. It's even worse when I use a flash with manual settings for shutter speed/aperture/ISO. If I use the tracking field without eye autofocus, I always get good results. I also have the impression that it's better at low ISO (100-800) and good light, but why does a green box appear when the focus isn't right? Overall, I'm slowly becoming disappointed with the performance. The Fujifilm X series would otherwise be such a great system with such outstanding image quality.
thanks for this, I noticed the update yesterday but I wanted to wait for a video from you and Fuji should put a note in the sales boxes reminding of this channel and fujixweekly (these two are really important things to have if you own a Fuji camera) 😅
I did the X-T5 latest firmware update, v4.0…. I went to an arboretum the other day to photograph flowers. I had the X-T5 in AF-S mode since I didn’t have a moving subject. The camera would not focus properly within the AF box. What the heck, the latest firmware update now has compromised shooting still photography. It’s the first time I’ve had a problem with the X-T5 having focusing issues in AF-S mode. These weren’t even “false positives” images. The camera’s autofocus wouldn’t even give me a green box AF confirmation when focusing on a single, subject flower. I noticed that my focusing box was placed directly on the flower while the camera focused on the background space. Recomposing the scene and half pressing the focusing/shutter release button did not help. I was well within the minimum focusing distance. It felt like the camera wasn’t even trying to acquire focus from the green focusing box. Soon after, my camera completely froze with a black out screen. I took out the battery to reset camera. Focusing seemed OK after that. I suspecting bugs in the new update.
Good news! I just took my camera to Venice Beach and did some street photography using the X-T5 in continuous auto focus mode at the skateboard park. The camera worked flawlessly with the tracking of the moving subject and acquiring focus quickly. I was impressed with the speed of the camera to re-acquire my subject even after the skateboarder left my field of view at the bottom of a pool and reappearing into the field of view back at the top of the pool lip. I need to examine the sharpness of focus within Capture One. I believe 1/1,800 of a second will be ample enough to handle the motion blur. Overall, I was highly impressed! I generally do more single shot auto focus with recomposing my scene with using focus lock.
With the popularity of the new firmware downgrade process that some users are doing, Fuji could not have released this soon enough. Hopefully it does actually fix the AF issues!
I used Fujifilm (X-T3, X-T4, X-T5, X-H2S) for years but their autofocus was sometimes ok but sometimes it missed the ee of a person, even in close distance. I switched to Nikon in March and am now happy. The quality of the AF is a big difference.
Hi. Tried a few quick bursts at flocks of pigeons flying [and a bit far from home] tracking seems much better and the result is better for sure . . although there was no background clutter which will check soon enough ...and video , tried filming skyline switching from near to far and up to the sky and back down to buildings well the focus never wavered not even for a split second....... all in REALA , colour looks great my gear XH-2s and 150-600 mm fuji lens. Thanks for this video too as always. OFF TO SOME REAL TESTING 😀
I'm new to Fuji and just purchased the X-T5. Trying to update via an SD card off my MAC just wouldn't work (.dat file on VLC software). I ended up upgrading via Bluetooth from the Fuji app, which was a breeze! Many thanks for this video and everything you do, especially for newbies like me.
@@bevholbeche-eyre1093 What is VLC? I clicked on the firmware update and it downloaded at dat file, FWUP0030.DAT to be exact. I dragged it across to my SD card, popped the SD card to the X-T5 and initiated FW update, took a few minutes.
5. A minor bug - on my X-T5 I had very randomly behaviour of the IBIS. With the 90mm F2 Only worked on continuous or off - on shooting mode, didn't do anything! With the 100-400 sometimes it worked when half pressed the shutter.. and suddenly gone! I would restart the camera and would not change the behaviour. After some good amount of photographs when I half pressed the shutter button, the IBIS locked again - no settings were changed! I tested it yesterday with both lenses plus the 33mm F1.4 and they all behave as supposed. IBIS continuous.. always stable. IBIS when shooting mode, halp pressed the shutter and the IBIS actuates and smooths everything! More minor stuff that is not so minor I still have to test. So far, much better. Green light confirmation (autofocus) a little slower but OK focus. Before.. more swift response, the camera recognized the subject / face / eye.. and then.. not in focus.
For me, it is not fixed on the x-s20. Shooting stills (2 persons sitting in a restaurant) yesterday with eyeAf, afc and wide tracking on it could not find the eye (not good , but ok it was lowlight), but it finds the face and framed it green. Then the photos where taken. But on the result the face is blurry and the ears are sharp.
Nice. But many X-mount users who like wide format images are still hoping for a firmware update that provides a 65:24 (or similar) crop option such as GX-mount users have, so we can pretend we have Hasselblad X-Pan or Fujifilm T-X1/2 panoramic film cameras. With 40MP sensors, this is now practically useful. And I can't see why it should be difficult to implement in a firmware update.
Indeed. See 65:24 panos by Adam Gibbs or Alister Benn, both with Fuji GX. Would be perfect on my XT-5 for creative composition (mainly landscape photography, travel/street photography).
Hello Chris, I'm owner of an XHS 2S for some of the Video Pro uses. I just updated the firmware to 7.0 and I am quite disappointed with the results for the AF update. In addition, this update caused new bugs for me, notably the LIVE VIew (the automatic switching of the LCD - EVF no longer works!). If the engineers who design the hardware at Fuji do a good job, on the other hand the computer developers who program the firmware and software are really bad. When will we finally have an efficient and reliable AF system, which does not also introduce new bugs for other functions? Is there a quality check before new firmware goes live at Fuji? This is no longer possible and it is not a professional attitude, they will lose market share to competing brands with such negligence. Chris thank you for your informative videos! Jean (from Belgium)
Thanks for the heads-up regarding the firmware update of the X-T5. I do have one questioin for you. How do you handle high humidly situations when shooting our doors? I reside in South Carolina and the humidity is off the charts during the summer months. With the X-T5 being weather proof, can I stop worrying about internal issues and merely tip away condensation on the lens? Thanks and I sincerely appreciate your efforts to air quality/informative programs.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty wary of the idea that Reala Ace (and Nostalgic Negative) can't be included in cameras with X-trans IV. Computationally, are the new simulations so complex that the previous processor cannot handle them?... I am convinced that it is a completely viable update, and that if Fujifilm does not do it, at least for the moment, it is not for that reason. I can understand that (maybe) it is necessary to generate a different programming to achieve the same simulation using the previous processor, and that for now Fujifilm prefers not to invest in it. I can also understand that the brand considers that the most recent models must demonstrate that they have more advantages and options than the previous ones, and therefore it is only a commercial strategy. Maybe one day they will finally do it, as happened with other older models regarding other simulations released later, and to show again that even after so much time, they take care of their users (which is very good). Love your channel pal2tech 🥰
I just updated my XT5. The camera was making a loud vibrating noise during the update….It was the lens. I had a TTArtisans 56/1.8 on . The XT5 Did not like that lens on the camera . Took it off. Noise stopped and firmware finished…..Strange…I think!
I mainly shoot animals and birds, occasionally motorbikes, so I’ve been holding back on updating my X-H2s because of the recent issues, this is at least reassuring that they’re working on it, fingers crossed. But thanks for your great content as always.
If I recall, a lot of people complained that the previous firmware update for the XH2S (and possibly the XH2) made the eye/face autofocus worse than it was previously. I would hope that this latest firmware version doesn't just improve on the previous one, but on anything previous, especially since it is apparently almost impossible to go back to any earlier firmware versions at home.
updated the firmware on X-H2, tried it with my wife being a subject, sticky on the eyes, way better. in the last one it showed the eye but ended up focusing on eye brows/nose instead.
I literally just ordered my first Fuji last night, the XH2, and all the recent news had me a little worried but was hoping the update would come soon 😅 wow what timing
We must welcome you as a new member of the fuji family. I hope you will enjoy this camera as much we all do with ours (whatever the model) What lenses did you choose?
@@titanpocket5944 thanks ☺️ I got the viltrox 23mm f1.4 on the way, but currently narrowing down a good small travel zoom. Either the new 16-50 Fuji or the Sigma 18-50. Just unsure if I care about fully resolving the 40mp sensor vs the constant F stop of the Sigma, any thoughts that may help?
@@titanpocket5944 yeah that's kind of where I'm hesitant as well... I'll probably just wait a few months and see how prices go on eBay . thanks again 👊
I can constantly freeze up my T2 (and I think T3) by pressing the play button directly after taking a shot. No amount of waiting will resolve the writing function, and you can't do anything unless you pop the battery out. And I mean, pressing that button DIRECTLY instantly after taking the shot
THIS is the update we've been waiting for! Thank you for being so quick to let us know. Is it safe to install the firmware upgrade immediately, or should I wait in case there are bugs etc?
I bought my X100VI about a month ago and Reala Ace was on the firmware update I did when I first unboxed it. Am I missing something? UPDATE! Apologies, I realise now that the Reala Ace was for the other cameras mentioned and the X100vi gets the other updates. Thanks for the video!
I have been dealing with this issue for a long time now. Subject detection AI properly detects the object (animal's or human's eye etc.) and marks it green even though it only detected where the focus should be acquired but without acquiring actual focus. Hopefully it will now work better. I have also noticed that subject detection works significantly better in AF-C with Zone AF rather than with Wide/tracking.
Love the depth of your tips and techniques for Fuji cameras and lenses! We have a problem with one of our two X-T5 camera bodies having some sort of "lock" icon showing in yellow on the back of the LCD and don't know what it is affecting or where to take off that lock. The same body (used by my wife) also tends to overheat when mine doesn't even when we are shooting in the same conditions. She does do a lot more ICM and multiple exposures than I do and takes a lot more frames than I do, but it still seems odd that her camera overheats so easily. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?
Hey tks Chris, always appreciated. If I may, regarding auto bracket focusing - When setting the "steps," (A and B) with camera secured on a tripod, do you focus first on the nearest pt and then another 2nd point by moving the small green focus box around the frame w/o changing the actual lens (this may be several pts. from front to back) - or - just go with the first focus point nearest the camera in Auto - and then move the focus box to the farthest point of a landscape photo? No change or movement of the lens, just the green focus pt. in the view finder. [Fuji XT5]. So real far distance w/ first the flower close and then mtns far away? Watched several videos and all just seem to gloss over this detail point. Do you adjust the camera lens or just change the focus pt. with moving the green focus pt. box. Thanks much.
I've shot many rolls of the actual Reala 100 in 35mm and 120, but I never got to shoot the Ace variant, some said it was a premium version for the Japanese market. Wonder if the simulation manages to nail the original look.
I purchased a GFX 100s at B&H in New York City on August 2021. I have installed recently the latest firmware version (2.12) and I encountered that the front wheel has stopped working. I use my camera always in mode "M", using both the front and back wheel to change aperture & shutter speed. I have noticed that the front wheel has stopped changing any value: "aperture", "s.s." and/or "ISO" (no matter each of which is selected on the menu). In addition, the aperture is not changed despite the GF lens is set the aperture ring to "C" and/or "A". The front wheel does not work no matter I select "M", "A" or any other shooting modes. Only the aperture is changed by the back wheel on "P" mode. Is there any chance to downgrade the firmware version to 2.11, so that to see if the front wheel comes back to work properly, or any other option available?. Any piece of advise would be much appreciated.
Thx Chris for this insight! 🙏🏻 In terms of autofocus: how would you setup your AF-C custom setting for a toddler running towards you? Many thanks and best wishes! 👍🏻

Pal2tech I love you man. You’ve enabled me to really bring my Fuji to life!
Thanks for the update!
Fujifilm X-S20 received Reala Ace as well so it is not a limitation of the sensor.
It's about processor not sensor. So xs20 is like xt5
Now we just need Fujifilm to fix the age-old problem of out of focus shots when using wide angle lenses in AF-S mode and focusing on something at infinity. You are welcome to check this out Chris, there are numerous threads on DPReview should you be interested.
I would celebrate this so much if I had my preordered x100vi in my hands lol. thanks for the updates pal2tech!

The best Fuji reviewer in the world!
Had to subscribe I just got my Fuji x100vi and you have been a gem.
Excellent news! Thanks again for keeping us up to date!
I can't imagine the complexity of the code behind these cameras
I’ve updated my X-T5 to 4.00 and hope this addressed the issues I had with false positive green box. Thanks for making this video.
That's amazing, current model Fuji's are closer to the same AF as my 6 year old Sony!
did you find an AF mode that actually works on the X-T5?
@@TuinleiBob maybe manual... Maybe 😅
I just reverted back to 1.03 fw, the AF on these newer releases is not good.
I find this gimmick very very annoying. There is absolutely no reason to not include it in the XT4/XT3.
Thanks for the info on update. Completely missed the last one . I hope I haven’t missed anything by jumping to the latest update .
Slainte !
Love the sheep dog photos. I'll update my XT5/X100vi firmware this weekend.
Glad they addressed the AF issue in the X100VI.
Its better, but not necessarily fixed fully!
check your settings because I just did the 10 ft test and as long as your ISO and Shutter is fast enough to stop action it worked for me. :)
in video, or in photo?

Eager to see it in action in my x-h2s
Thank You too much for sharing. Greetings from Belgium. I'll do the update on my two XT-5 tomorrow morning :)
thanks for this, I noticed the update yesterday but I wanted to wait for a video from you and Fuji should put a note in the sales boxes reminding of this channel and fujixweekly (these two are really important things to have if you own a Fuji camera) 😅
Thanks so much for that video, I would have missed the FW update for my X-T5 without it. Thank you ❤
hi pal2tech, but after the disastrous 7.0, is there any news on the sensor update? AF is embarrassing
With the popularity of the new firmware downgrade process that some users are doing, Fuji could not have released this soon enough. Hopefully it does actually fix the AF issues!
Thank you! I want full test so i can think about buying X-S20 or else thinking about selling the whole thing and get Sony!
I used Fujifilm (X-T3, X-T4, X-T5, X-H2S) for years but their autofocus was sometimes ok but sometimes it missed the ee of a person, even in close distance. I switched to Nikon in March and am now happy. The quality of the AF is a big difference.
I was waiting for you before upgrading my x-t5 😅👏🏻💪🏻
Te ha corregido errores, notas mejoría...?
I'm new to Fuji and just purchased the X-T5. Trying to update via an SD card off my MAC just wouldn't work (.dat file on VLC software). I ended up upgrading via Bluetooth from the Fuji app, which was a breeze! Many thanks for this video and everything you do, especially for newbies like me.
I use an MBA M1, updated my X-T5 via the SD card no problems.
I have the same computer running on Sonoma 14.5. Did your .dat file download on VLC?
@@bevholbeche-eyre1093 What is VLC? I clicked on the firmware update and it downloaded at dat file, FWUP0030.DAT to be exact. I dragged it across to my SD card, popped the SD card to the X-T5 and initiated FW update, took a few minutes.
yea, wonder what VLC software is, never heard of it. I had no problem updating via an SD card on MAC.
Would be perfect on my XT-5 for creative composition (mainly landscape photography, travel/street photography).
for Fuji camera knowhow only your channel is enough, great content
TYSM for making these easily digestible firmware update videos!! 🥺😊
Hello Chris,
I'm owner of an XHS 2S for some of the Video Pro uses.
Nice I saw there was a update and watched your video immediately right after.
Thank you Sir for your service! Have a great weekend! Cheers!
People now found a way to downgrade the firmware, search for it on youtube, if you find you need an older one.
@@denniszaidman2089 Thanks!

I literally just ordered my first Fuji last night, the XH2, and all the recent news had me a little worried but was hoping the update would come soon 😅 wow what timing
We must welcome you as a new member of the fuji family. I hope you will enjoy this camera as much we all do with ours (whatever the model)
What lenses did you choose?
@@titanpocket5944 thanks ☺️ I got the viltrox 23mm f1.4 on the way, but currently narrowing down a good small travel zoom. Either the new 16-50 Fuji or the Sigma 18-50. Just unsure if I care about fully resolving the 40mp sensor vs the constant F stop of the Sigma, any thoughts that may help?
@@UpgradeLemonade I only shoot with prime lenses. But the new Fuji kit seems to be too expensive as a standalone product.
As always, great video and update on everything Fuji!! Love your videos!
what is with Xs-10? Already forgotten to the limbs of fujis history.. and it´s 3 years old, thank you fuji.
which autofocus do you think is better for tracking fast subject XT4 or XT5?
Thank you so much for your great content!!! I have been wondering when this update will come out! Thank you sir!
The update only added Reala Ace to XT-5 as X-100VI already had it at launch.
Thank you for such wonderful news, and for so detailed review on them!
Thanks a lot for this update. Also a very fast turn around time.
Compliments
Off topic I know but would love to see you do a video on how the new tether app works works and links in with lightroom :)
Great suggestion!
Birthday gift (June 30) for my XT-5 🙏🏻
Thanks for the video Chris!
After looking at your link . You forgot to mention the GF55mm lens also has a firmware update.
I've shot many rolls of the actual Reala 100 in 35mm and 120, but I never got to shoot the Ace variant, some said it was a premium version for the Japanese market. Wonder if the simulation manages to nail the original look.
Question on focus... do you focus (back button) and then let up on it and it stays in focus?? The new lock focus confuses me...
Yes exactly!
Pal to ambassador. Such a font of knowledge. Thank you thank you Mr Tec❤
Thx Chris for this insight! 🙏🏻 In terms of autofocus: how would you setup your AF-C custom setting for a toddler running towards you? Many thanks and best wishes! 👍🏻
Thank you for the great content! :D I updated my X-S20 and either Capture One nor Lightroom shows the new film sim Reala Ace. Shoul we wait for updates for the aps?
Same, I don't find it too in adobe lightroom. The reala ace color profile is still missing
I join the question
I hope the autofocus is really better I've been struggling with focus being off with both xt5 and xh2
Keep hoping.
Been burned by Fuji “new” and “awesome” AF too many times!
Disappointment. On x h2 especially low light focusing got bad. Also it is coming back of others brand. With new firmware is it going more back😮 eye detecting is not everything. Via New firmware, General af performance not developt also decrease.
Hey love your videos and I was looking for a serious review on the allegedly improved af on the 4.0 firmware upgrade for the xt5. I’m not sure if you’ve done one. But in my experience the af is now worst than ever
Glad to hear you got a new puppy! ! Thanks for covering this. Super stoked to update my Xh2. Never had any problems (guess I don’t jiggle my camera the right way) 😂
Thank You, Chris!
Since I updated firmware in my XT5, it seems when I record 4K 60fps, any picture profile, with High NR to -4, it's still applying a huge amount of NR, images don't look sharp and look very muddy. I looked through every setting, and can't find anything else that applies NR. I'm not sure if it's a bug on these latest firmware update, or if it's something else. But the camera became useless. Any one else having this issue?
