In this episode I explore Harare and Bulawayo and awaken some unexpected memories.
Oh Bruce! I got so emotional watching this...as a Zimbabwean myself i really hope things get better and all Zimbabweans including those that have left can live together in harmony 🇿🇼❤

Yes. I noticed how Mermaids pool has become abandoned. That was a shame. We used to go there regularly. 😪 Also, I loved Mana Pools. Another place we used to go. My Mum lived in Karoi, so we would go to Kariba Another.

Which challenges are exaggerated? A small minority have a great life but for the average citizen it's real. That little corner of H town that is the Northern Suburbs is not representative of the bigger picture.
@@vdotme I don’t doubt that at all as in any country but i did not see anyone sitting in a gutter starving to death like the media portrays is happening all over the place. I had the privilege of traveling in all sorts of areas while I was there, including Kuwadzana, Tyneald, Glaudina, Ruea etc and did not see anyone starving to death while sitting in a gutter but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, all it means is it is not happening as much as media portrays.
I met and talked to many many locals, in all sorts of areas and the thing that struck me was how positive people were. Wait until you see where Ryan and I traveling in the next episode.
There is still a lot of light which doesn’t mean there is no one battling and I do believe Zim has so much potential and harping on about what was and what had happened is not going to maximise that potential. Negativity breeds negativity!

@@vdotme there is exaggeration and lies by most Zim media and some TH-camrs. People want pity from foreigners I think. Pity will not improve the economic situation.
@@OverlandingwithBruce Definitely in agreement on media not living up to its calling and yes things could be so much worse, just saying media's coverage is more interests based (on both sides) but for the people in the middle - it is very real, especially if you look at where we once were and the optimism we all once had compared to what counts for optimism today.
There was a time that only furious racist white people would openly say that the Smith era was the good old days. Now, staunch black African nationalists can only broach that argument in political terms because society, education, economy, civil rights, national cohesion and other measures of state well-being reveal a damning indictment of the state's sustained failure. That failure has vindicated arguments for Smith if not the man himself.
The facts aren't exaggerated, just the assessment of the facts.

I work at Saint Georges College. So upset that I didn't see you there, could have gone on a full tour (re-tour) showing you the changes etc. Shasha, the security guard, is an absolute legend at the school. I had the privilege of going to the school and now teaching at the school.
Hi Michael. I kind of felt like I was trespassing as I had taken a chance. It was on a Saturday also.
Shashe was awesome. Such a great guy and he did show me some of the changes at the back of the class rooms.

I totally get your visit to your old school! I went to Chaplin High School in Gweru which is still going strong to this day. Chaplin's most famous old boy was none other than Ian Smith!! I left in 1977 when I was 15 but went back for a visit in 1989.

Hi Bruce, Alan here Old Georgian class of 2019 so very recent! Although its only been 5 years for me this was a true trip down memory lane and all the things you mentioned about the school are exactly how they are now (first team fields, senior grasses, tear drop island etc.) As 6th form students we really try to keep the history of the school the exact way we found it. The school history test is there and im sure it will never leave. Mr Fernandes taught me as well which is ridiculous 🤣. The rugby field you're referring to at the entrance that you think is a cricket field is still the 1st team cricket field. Im assuming you were there during winter which is when it's converted into a rugby field (should be 2nd team). Cant forget Shasha the security guard, absolute LEGEND! Thanks for the video!
That’s amazing if you consider we are about 30 years apart. So great to hear the traditions have been kept. It’s truly a spectacular school and we are privileged to have gone there.

Botanic Gardens is behind St George's school. The garden in the CBD is called Harare gardens. Sheraton still maintains the HICC title though its now called Rainbow Towers. Showground is still being used for Agricultural show

Funny how in this video nothing was really new because its routes I travel all the time, for me it was about you sharing your memories St Georges, Borrowdale primary and how you remember most of those places. Sheraton Hotel is now Rainbow Towers and the show ground is still operational lol. Harare has a lot of suicidal drivers and you definitely need to drive very defensively. 51:10 that was Gweru (where im from) you were passing right at the Boogie clock not Kwekwe. Who knew a place you see every other time can look so different and beautiful when someone else is telling the story and a history you didnt know of. looking forward for the next episode.

Mr. Mayger was our Head master at Highlands Junior in the early 90s and he still had his trusty MG, a serious educator you would never want to cross. Mr Blake was our Hostel Master and he taught at Borrowdale School up the road, thank you for this trip down memory lane. Mr Mayger is retired now, lots of grey hair, he has mellowed a bit...lol A legend!

Mandara area has changed so much .... i remember it very well, especially that part that was your property as you say ....we used to tresspass through it to get to Acturus Road 🙈🙈, and it was beautiful when it had the Msasa tress and Mazhanje trees ....but i saw it change till 2013 and sadly so the bush that was there only those who saw it will understand the beauty of Mandara

Thanks for sharing your time in Zim. Came to study in Australia in the early 2000s with the view to go back home after graduation. Almost 20 years later I'm still here yet no day passes by without a thought of Zimbabwe. We have an amazing country, lots of amazing memories for some us. Taking my family for a holiday next month but I'm really considering moving back. Perhaps I can vlog other beautiful places that I think vloggers may not be aware.

Looooooool. Spike was not far off death's door when I was at Saints. That basement office that was between Neptune & Beit Hall became Lambourne's and he had a gym there - he was sports master at that time. He cut back on admin space so gym machines could be indoors - my first ever experience of a proper gym.
Spike was the librarian and his wife ran the boarder's kitchen. They were now too old for big dogs and had one of those little shaggy dogs that are more aggressive than rottweilers 🤣🤣🤣🤣. We used to throw condom water bombs at it from the form one dorm which overlooked their back garden. Fun times.
Flip now I remember Mike Lambourne did have a gym there. Remember it clearly now. I also remember his son Vince, really good guy.

@@OverlandingwithBruce Yes, you just jogged memory. Spike had the St Bernards. We only saw them from HH when he'd take it for walks. It was McDonald Lucas who was the librarian (I think - the faces are clear but the names get jumbled lol). Spike was one of those legendary OGs with rich history but was practically retired with nothing jobs (not meant disparagingly - just that it was very light work you couldn't get as a regular applicant) but lived on college accommodation.

Thank you for your video, you took me down the memory lane ,i was a student at Oriel Boys from 1991 to 1994 and we use to do marathon down Pringle Road , I have beautiful memories studying at Oriel and we use to frequent Chisipite area a lot right up to Kamfinsa and Greendale , It was very nostalgic watching Mandara but i was not happy with the state of the roads and i been at Chikurubi farm as well It was very beautiful to watch ,and our school bus would drive past State House ,St Georges most of the places and schools you mentioned has students from the area i grew up and we would drive to most of these areas on our way home ,It's good to see that most of the areas are still looking good and hopefully the situation shall continue improving i have strong hope that Zimbabwe shall be great again ,I have been at Lake Chivero, and have driven along Bulawayo Road right to Bulawayo and have visited Kwekwe ,Gweru and Bulawayo and this was a beautiful moment watching your travel vlog and very nostalgic ,I wishes you the best in your vlogs and your content is very beautiful ,no music or noise and you make one wants watch all episodes ,tomorrow i shall attempt watch the rest of the episodes,Thank you for sharing the content,

@@OverlandingwithBruce Thank you ,i watch a lot of you tube content because i have also not been residing in Zimbabwe since 2007 and i often visit in every three years and the vlogs helps me to keep posted on all the developments happening in Zim,i liked what you said ,where you mentioned that the media paints a picture that is usually not a hundred percent true reflection of the way things are on the ground so i deliberately avoid the news and most of the negativity and likes seeing it for myself or watching vlogs and then making my own conclusions as often those who peddle the news has a lot of motives some political and am certainly not interested in politics and other issues that shapes the narrative that the media ,social commentators and other blog writers often reports.
@@michaelemmanuel2628 exactly and with me just being a guy who likes to explore Africa, with no sponsors or other motives I am hoping to add some honest perspectives.

Wow..stumbled across this...I had relatives in Borrowdale who I stayed with just after independence....b4 it all got a bit hairy there....the Bhundu Boys were on the radio. I was lucky enough to rough back pack to Vic falls, Hwange, Kariba, then finally made it to mana pools to canoe amongst hippo and Elephant...amazing amazing days.. thank you Bruce for your trip down memory lane...the people were all so friendly and full of smiles, the government it turned out not so much so...!!! So sad, such a wonderful country and people...thank you for bringing back some amazing memories for me too..x

You missed the new entrance and extension of Sam Levy’s - restaurants , cinemas, supermarkets and gym with a massive palm treed car park , opened about 10 yrs ago.
I was there but it was too busy to walk around filming. There is so much to show. I will be back though. Thank you for watching Gavin
