    Great to see the tour of the military museum. I grew up in Gwelo/Gweru until I was 15. Ian Smith was Head Boy at my School, Chaplin. This was really close to where you were. I’ve shared your video on a Gweru facebook page so I’m sure you’ll get hundreds of of more views - keep up the good work!

    Following our conversation about Chitake, I have concerning and disconcerning news about chitake.
    I was in Chitake2- campsite and at 6pm I had the fire going and as you adviced had a few lights on, sitting in my chair, next to the car. Then I heard a Lion contact calling, difficult to tell how far, but the fourth time it became clear that it was not too far, 100m or less? Straight ahead. So to deter I shone my spotlight, but a few bushes were in the way, so I couldn't see. The next call was suddenly and unexpectedly to my right, and when I directed the spotlight that way , less then 15 meters away a Lioness casually walked by. As if I was not there, nor the lights nor the fire. Later she came back and roared the most of the night, 20 meters away , just behind the bushes of the campsite and later another one 60m away (saw the marks where they laid down the next day). Each night the lions were roaring like crazy coming from all directions, but not far away.
    Concerning that the Lion was not deterred at all, disconcerning because clearly I as a human was not on the menu...
    ..this time.

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Amazing. this is what I tell people all the time. Lions will not be deterred by humans....they take down buffalo so a human is pretty insignificant to them. That is why I always tell people to have an escape plan and make sure that escape plan is able to keep you safe for an extended period of time.
      I believe people were doing yoga in the river bed recently. They have no idea how terrible that is for the neighbours but also how dangerous that is for them to do that. They wouldnt even see the lions coming before it was too late.
      You are so lucky to experience that. A once in the life time experience. Well done and thank you for letting me know.

    Great camera work. I have been to Zimbabwe once in the early 1980's and never went back. You are convincing to go back with your videos. Is that the Conqueror Commander caravan? (Is it the one you were complaining about on the forums?) If you are able will you do a walk around of the caravan.

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you Johan. You should go back and visit.
      Yes I did complain about the quality workmanship on 4x4 Community but no where else.
      The reason for my complaints was because all 3 brand new trailers I have purchased have been plagued with quality issues, leaks, dust ingress and poor wiring. I also had shocks fail on the commander and companion but I think that was the quality of the shocks or possibly the wrong spec being used more than anything else. Conqueror did eventually refund me for the shocks I purchased in Harare, fixed all of the issues and fitted new shocks to the Commander. They were very good like that.
      I must also say that, the commander is still my favourite though and it tows very well and is very comfortable. % star camping for sure. There is massive packing space of which we didnt even use 1/3 of it for this two week trip.

      Hi Bruce, further to my earlier note, having had a long association with the Zambezi Valley and Mana,dating back to the construction of Kariba. It saddens me when pristine areas like the Chitake baobabs become camping areas. This area has a mystical feel about it and one wonders who has travised it, unfortunately camping there will ultimately destroy this.

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@antkenny7944 I agree and it is the same for many areas unfortunately, and that is exactly why I disagree with the fee structure that encourages groups to camp there, and in the rest of the valley, in order to share the cost. All we can do is hope that people respect the areas and not over crowd them and damage them even more.
      Also, I would rather have these campsites than mines so these campsites need to bring in revenue to prevent the mining.

      @@OverlandingwithBruce We were in Mhara Bush Camp last year which is the concession beside Chitake, we tried to pop into Chitake on the way but the Zim Parks officials advised all camps were full. I was in Chitake last in 2010, we camped by the big fig tree overlooking one of the springs. Unfortunately on our last night my uncle was ambushed by a pride while having a bush shower behind our camp site just after sunset. We had been watching them all day, there was photography tour staying at one of the other camp sites further down and the guide (Steve Pope) let me join and walked me to within meters of them earlier in that day.

      @@robertnoon I’m so sorry to hear that Robert. I know exactly where that campsite is and know the story. I have told others that I would not camp at that site because of the bushes and way the lions can stalk campers there.
      All the best and thank you for sharing your story.

    Awesome Bruce I have been on a couple of visits to Zimbabwe between 1977 and 2014. I however have heard horror stories of the police intimidating visitors for bribes and thought never to go back to Zimbabwe. Have you experienced problems with the police at road blocks, etc?

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. I am willing to bet I have probably done more milage around Zim than the average tourists and therefore I have gone through just about every road block that there is in Zim, and can assure you that I have not experienced any intimidation or other problems at a single one. Not even a request for a cold drink. I have only experienced friendliness and professionalisim. Some Police have even been surprised to see me especially when im off the main routes and some have even made suggestions of places to go and visit.

    Bruce I've just 1 question, during these camping Where do you bath and where do you take your poop ? Just curious

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The caravan has water tanks and a hot water shower but you obviously have to conserve the water. If camping without the caravan at a place with no facilities, you either use river water or a bucket with water from the tank fitted to the vehicles. For pooping you dig a hole away from the campsite, do your business, burn the toilet paper and then cover it up again.

      Scrapyard is a bit harsh. I think considering the budgets they probably don’t have and all the constraints they do have it must be hard to have a high standard of displays. I enjoyed the visit there and found it very interesting either way.

    Zimbabweans need to get real with their exorbitant accommodation prices if they expect support from South African holidaymakers. I refuse to get shafted for very 3rd world facilities

    • @OverlandingwithBruce
      @OverlandingwithBruce  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While I do agree they are exorbitant in some cases they have seen a massive increase in tourism in the last year so I don’t think they are short of holiday makers. Places like Gonarezhou have had a 21% increase with almost 11000 people visiting the park this past year compared to 8900 odd on 2022. 2 years ago you wouldn’t see another SA vehicle while traveling in Zim, now they all over the place.
