      ScreenPrism thank you! As a boss... a couple of seasons into the show...I thought that he was actually a great boss...his goofy zany antics help performance even though the team doesn't see it -- in Greg McKeown's book Essentialism - he discusses the importance of play to facilitate high achievement

    Pam's art show is, to me, Michael Scott at his finest. A rare occasion where he says and does everything right, and not because he's trying to cheer her up... that'd be disastrous, and he's not even aware that she is upset. No, because it's a true reaction from the man who really, really loves to sell paper and looks at his staff as being friends.
    "There is my window, and there's my car! Is that your car? That is our building... where we sell paper. I am really proud of you.".
    Such a great scene, such a great show. Pamcaso, lol.

    Something I’m surprised you left out, in one of the episodes (can’t remember) Michael claims that “people will never go out of business” his branch flourishes because while the other branches and corporate focus on selling paper, he focused on serving people, he sells on the premise that when you call, you don’t get an answering machine, you get Pam. That your call matters, that you matter. And people always will pick that over email or robots. That’s why Michael really is the greatest boss, and why he could sell anything and flourish is because, he is truly in the people business, and as how I stated earlier, “people will never go out of business”.

    You forgot a pretty good point I saw in anther video: that Micheal values his customers as people too. Did you see how he planted that sale with Jan. He barley spent any time talking about actual paper, instead, he got to know his client and tried to create a personal connection. He puts the customer's needs first and treats them with respect

    • @mechengr1731
      @mechengr1731 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, he was willing to spent a whole day making one sale. On pretzel day, he was constantly making Fat Albert jokes with 1 customer. You know that made the customer feel good about themselves. "Oh wow, this branch manager took time to make jokes with me all day."

    We see glimpses of Michael's people skills whenever he closes a client or when he leverages David Wallace into getting his job back. He's an actual genius. Which is why Corporate made him Regional Manager. I think he does know that micro managing people would ultimately hinder their productivity. But then again he's a kid, he wants to have fun and have friends and family, something he never really had as a kid. He maybe wants to be the fun parent to his employees that he never had. • @mankytoes
      @mankytoes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +312

      I would say Michael actually cares about the company, in his own way, whereas Brent is ultimately far more self centred, and thus less likeable. There's one episode where the boss of another branch screws over the company for a better deal with a rival, and Jim says "say what you like about Michael Scott, he'd never do that". Whereas Brent is happy for his whole branch to get closed so he can have a promotion. You see, you've got to look at the whole pie, and the people are the fruit...
      Scott also wants actual friendships with his employees, whereas Brent seems more interested in being admired.

      Now You See It did a fantastic video on the difference between British and American comedy with The Office as the focal point. It doesn't focus exactly on David Brent and Michael Scott but it really gives some great perspective on what sets the two versions of the show apart.

    • @mankytoes
      @mankytoes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Yeah the last episode is really optimistic, just like the American show really, but it feels so earned and unexpected because of what came before it. "Chris? Why don't you fuck off" is one of the most satisfying lines in tv history.
      I thought Finchy was a better character than Packer, because there was something horribly familiar with how Finchy bullied people and got with women. Whereas Packer just seemed like a loser. Like Michael tells a story that ends with Packer having a threesome, and it's like really? That guy? I'd expect Michael to do better than him.

      The Office UK is superior on a technical level, in how it's much more authentic and less exaggerated.
      That being said, I prefer The Office US, because first and foremost, it succeeds as a comedy. It's basically the perfect comfort food for whenever I'm feeling down, whereas the UK version is too bleak with a subtle theme of existentialism. For as many funny moments it has, it's not the ideal comedy for me.

    I absolutely loved what they did with Michael's last day. Instead of mostly showing the small changes in his character, they opted to make sure that his redeeming and charismatic qualities are the main focal point. For example, he did ask Pam what flavor ice cream she wanted and accepted Phyliss' incomplete mittens which showed growth in wanting to make things all about him from earlier seasons, but he also gave Andy some of his most valuable clients despite knowing how bad a salesman Andy is and innocently insulted Kevin's appearance. I honestly think that's how you end a character's arc---not compromising the character's traits as to make them almost unrecognizable, but to shine light on what made them great.

      Agree about the employees being forced to manage themselves or otherwise their branch will collapse and they will lose their jobs...actually, The Office is a satire of the workplace. We know as employees that if we can get away with poor performance and still get paid, we will. I experienced having such a lazy boss that his subordinates, me included, had to think of ways to implement what our boss's boss wanted us to implement in the workplace. Otherwise, as the front liners, we are the ones who will suffer.

    I think that in the part where you talked about the different managers there was only one manager better than Michael and that was Dwight. Dwight’s management style is completely opposite from Michael. While Michael played into nonsense Dwight did everything to remove all nonsense like the other bosses. But he was able to do it because people actually respected him and took kindly to his management style. All the other managers like Deangleao, and Charles failed to get rid of nonsense and wasted time because they didn’t take the chance to befriend anyone while Dwight said it himself they were his closest friends. All the workers sucked up to the other bosses without actually gaining respect for them while they all treated Dwight like a friend while also respecting him as a boss. He applied his own instincts to the office by making it a professional place while using the most important thing Michael ever said “at the end of the day your office workers are just that, your very best friends.”

    I started watching the show very recently and I'm quite baffled to see how much love the character of Michael Scott receives, pretexting he's a "genuine" guy, "he wants the best for others", etc.
    I understand he had quite a difficult childhood, somehow, and was never able to connect with others. But to me, the few moments he acts as a normal and decent human being are not moments I think "how sweet of him". 1 right doesn't erase 10 wrongs.
    He's a self-absorbed jerk whose inability to show any empathy is somehow borderline psychopathic. He's a child in an adult's body, given too much power for his aptitudes. He has no understanding of what's rude or not, just like a child.
    Everything has to be about himself, to the detriment of others. And he doesn't realize his inability to create a true friendship with some people stems from his own behaviour. When something goes bad, it's everyone's fault but his own. Just like how a child thinks.
    I really find his character despicable, despite understanding the core "need" he has.
    And as I said, 1 right doesn't rectify 10 wrongs for me. And yes, he's "genuine" to an extent, yes he's "truthful" at times, but damn is he a fucking child who's been given too much responsibilities and who doesn't understand most of his own issues connecting to others comes from how an ass he is.
    And him being supportive of others and believing in his colleagues/"friends" doesn't balance the tremendous amount of shit he's doing/saying constantly. Because even when he proves to be supportive, most of the times, it's to benefit himself.
    Yeah, I really don't get how people can like his character.
    Carell is a hell of an actor though.

    Seeing the thumbnail for this video made me grin like an idiot :) I grew up on this show, I love watching how you've perfectly summarized what's so special about Michael. His personality has bothered many people I know - people not totally unlike his employees who perhaps rightfully scoffed at his methods and ethos. But after multiple viewings, I began to truly appreciate Steve Carell's nuanced performance, and how he was able to bring these layers of sensitivity and honest emotion to the surface, even amidst the silly antics. And how underneath his often immature façade, there was a decent man who deeply and genuinely cared about the people around him (ok, maybe except Toby Flenderson!)
    I can't begin to express my admiration for the work you so clearly pour into all your video essays. They're nothing short of fantastic, and I hope you know how very lucky and thankful your subscribers are ♥

    I like the theory that one of the reasons that Andy fails in Scranton (he goes from being director of sales to the worst salesman in the company) is because, like this video explains, Michael isn't a boss who directs his workers as much as he lets them use their individual creativity and strengths, unlike the Stamford boss, Josh. Josh is shown to direct his workers and give them specific tasks, which is something Andy needs to succeed, being less a self-starter than a yes-man as he is. So, the boss who lets his workers have the freedom to choose how they'll solve problems creatively is not the best for everyone, especially not task-oriented or rule-oriented folks.

    One of my favorite scenes that describes Michael is where Jan goes to Stamford to tell Josh he was getting promoted and then he screws them over. Then Jim says "Say what you will about Michael Scott, but he would never do THAT!" Perfectly sums up Michael to me in that one sentence!

      @@ZeroFreak1 does he tho? seems to me he cares about himself and if others have fun in the process, that's just an accident. he's selfish and narcissistic. even birthday parties for other ppl are always about him. when his "friend" kevin thought he had cancer, michaels only concern was that kevin was taking attn away from him. i don't need any friends like that.

    I would love Michael as a boss. The co-workers I've had who've valued play like he does absolutely make work a better place to be. I also love the episodes where they show that Michael is really good at his job! He comes across as childish and needy, but he's excellent with people and sales.

    My boss is exactly like Micheal Scott --- exactly, not only does he act like him but he even looks like him so much that he and our HR guy (who also is a spitting image of Toby Flenderson when he takes off his glasses) dressed like Micheal Scott and Toby and everyone who saw them knew exactly who they were - people were taking pictures with them. AND his name is Mark so I even started calling him "Markheal Scott', and he has a coffee mug on his desk that says "World's Okayest Boss" that I got him years ago for his birthday.
    Funny thing is that my boss doesn't even watch The Office...
    I LOVE The Office and I absolutely LOVE Micheal Scott...
    *But, here's why Micheal Scott (AND Markeal Scott) are the WORST boss* :
    Sure, MS (and my boss) is easy going, and fun to work for; you can get away with anything with them, mess with them, talk to them however you want and there's almost ZERO chance you would ever be fired no matter what you do, BUT...
    1. Micheal Scott (and my boss) gets in the way of productivity. He makes it difficult for his staff to do their jobs because of his constant interference. More work is done, and better quality work is done when he is ABSENT.
    2. Micheal Scott (and my boss) has relationships with women he works with, making the environment awkward for the rest of the employees
    3. Micheal Scott (and my boss) holds a million unnecessary and useless meetings which almost always end up going off track and someone always leaves offended.
    4. Micheal Scott (and my boss) has almost NO integrity. He will let his staff (particularity Dwight) take the fall for him rather than confess to screwing up something himself.
    5. Micheal Scott (and my boss) makes it impossible for his employees to advance. He actively cock-blocks them (Jim, Stanley, Daryl) from getting promotions and throws a tantrum when any of them try to break the status quo.
    So, yeah its nice having a "fun boss" like Micheal Scott but the downside of working for a Micheal Scott isn't worth the trade off, trust me.

    I actually think that I wouldn't mind having Michael be my boss for the most part. If he could get rid of the constant distractions that sometimes last an entire day or even longer, I think he could be a great boss for me. There's low stress, at least as far as the work goes, which for someone like me who has anxiety issues, would be great. It also seems like the people at Dunder-Mifflin: Scranton are kind of like a family, which is also something I look for in a good job. Also, "That's what she said!" would absolutely be okay with Michael at all times, regardless of the situation.

    Having a bad or incompetent boss is one way to instill camaraderie in the staff. It bridges gaps in backgrounds, petty feuds, etc if everyone shares a common disdain/frustration of the boss. The staff then works to support each other more than the boss, which is kinda better than the traditional goal.
