2018-2019 Kawasaki Ninja 400 Clutch & Springs Replacement

  • 2018-2019 Kawasaki Ninja 400 Clutch & Springs Replacement. Barnett clutch friction pads and springs. After we installed this kit the customer was not very happy with the results, but it was the replacement clutch's fault. The Barnett clutch plates and springs are a great upgrade and will more then likely last the rest of the bikes life. The owner was disappointed because he was trying to stunt the bike out as best as he could, and the Ninja 400 just doesn't have a meaty enough clutch setup to be able to bring the bike up from dumping the clutch anything above first gear. The bike doesn't lip per say, it just doesn't have a strong enough clutch (with or without a Barnett kit) to have the feel of a 600 or 1000 clutch which in general have the 2x the number of plates and 2x the number of springs.

Thanks man. I ordered the Norton Motorspports full clutch upgrade replacement with heavy duty Barnett plates and heavier springs etc to correct the factory issue with the flawed design of the stock clutch on the 2019 I have. They are sending directions because I'm replacing alot of parts in there including the shift rod that goes all the way out to where the shifter mounts to the end of it and bearings etc. I appreciate the vid, always good to watch everything ya can on whatever you're working on if it's the first time a person does work to that part of the bike.

Others may have possibly figured this out by now, but since you mention this is for stunt purposes there are a few things you should do in addition to the clutch upgrades. First, doing basic power mods always helps the cause. A good race header that deletes the cat, airbox mod and a good air filter go a long way. After this a good tune is paramount, along with raising the idle about 600-1000 RPM over factory. After this throw a +2-+4 sprocket out back. After this make sure your rear brake is squared away because the bike will really start to snap up. Clutch ups in 2nd and even 3rd are possible with enough throttle and throwing your weight back at the same time. In first gear you no longer need to even use the clutch, and just nailing the throttle along with shifting some of your weight back will easily get the bike to balance point.

A couple things: First, the torque tension on the screws above the springs should be 89 lb, not 100. Second, you should replace the bearing and pull rod with Kawasaki's updated OEM versions, which are 1 mm shorter each (implemented in the 2020+ bikes stock). This is due to Kawasaki admitting that the 2019 clutch pack isn't getting enough pressure from the OEM assembly from that year. Lots of 2019 400s have clutch issues with premature burn and also limited engagement (many cases probably go unreported).

    • @akpost8780

@@thegoldbarron9504 The torque level I'm referencing is noted in several TH-cam vids, including one by a mechanic who personally rides the 400. You can search for 'ninja 400 clutch replacement' and it'll pop up.
Kawasaki only sells the updated OEM rod and bearing, which is proof that the pack in the 18-19's weren't getting enough pressure. You cannot buy the longer rod and bearing OEM anymore. Kawasaki seems to kind of sneak the correction in, which makes sense given that they didn't issue a recall for the clutch, which they very well could have. Many low-mileage 2018-19 400s are sitting around with burnt clutches. I believe mine, which I bought used at 700 miles was sold because of an undisclosed clutch issue. Pretty dishonest of the seller, but then again, I never asked. Who would think a clutch would burn at 700 miles?
      Ride safe out there.

@@belikeawolf4627 Sorry for late reply. Check all the usuals. Make sure oil's at a good level, check paperwork and make sure owner is named on the title, look at tire wear and make sure the chain looks good -- no rust, not dry, and not too loose or tight. Look at the fairings closely for scratches and handlebar ends to see if bike's been dropped.. if these elements are replaced with aftermarket parts then that's a yellow flag bc owner could be hiding damage... For clutch issue, definitely take the bike on the highway and up to full speed... the shifting should give you a "kick" through every gear.. if it just sort of blips up then coasts between shifts your clutch is slipping most likely... the 400 should feel "powerful" all the way till 6th gear and up through 100 mph... if it doesn't, then your clutch is probably worn.

Similar situation right now with my Ninja 300. The gear pedal came off and had to drive it in 5th or 6th gear for about 10 minutes. It slowly stopped accelerating until it couldn't drive no more.
A day later I put the gear pedal back on and put it in neutral and then first gear but it still won't accelerate.
Weird thing now just like in this video is that while in first gear, if I let go of the clutch the bike doesn't turn off, but will turn off if I put in the stand. Also it won't shift to second gear.
Is it also burnt clutch plates?

originally i didn’t dummy proof myself once one morning, as to hanging a small bag on rear view mirrors, and for about 20 seconds pressing my clutch lever and suddenly stops accelerating and when came to a stop, with gearing down as it slowed itself, i tried 1st and didnt go anywhere but an inch or 2. turns on and revs but does not engage gear

Just a suggestion but use a piece of cardboard, push some holes in it in a rough pattern of the clutch cover and put the bolts in the corresponding holes. Also was your camera stabilization on? There is a magic trick not revealed. How did you get the cable out of the lower arm? On mine there is not enough play to swing it (rearward) free of that extension. That cable has to be free so that you can rotate the actuator arm outward so it will realease the push rod or the cover is not coming off. . . OK I got it. You have to remove the top of the clutch cable out of the lever housing completely, then it will have enough freeplay to rotate the lever arm. Also to know the lever arm is free you can pull up on the arm and that shaft will slide freely up when you have it rotated far enough to disengage the pushrod. Then the cover will only teeter on the dowel pins but it will finally come off.

I am going to reword all my leases for my renters. They already say no pets, no subleasing, no loud music, No band practice, no drummers,no cooking with curry, and now I will include, no motorcycles.
I have been forced to work on my road racing machines in the motel room at times when it was raining, but I put a plastic shower curtain on the floor under the bike, and I left the gas tag outside in the van.
I don’t mean to sound like an old buzz killer. But I have actually had two fires burn buildings. One of them, my motorcycle would not start after getting gas at the gas station that I worked at evenings/in on Saturdays and Sundays while I was in high school. I pulled it into the work bay where they worked on cars. I kept kicking kicking kicking trying to start it. I didn’t have air cleaners on it. I just got gas and some of it spilled because I overfilled it slightly. The bike backfired, The gas ignited, I jumped off the bike, it fell to the ground, spilling more gas... my bike was completely engulfed in flames on the floor. There was a car on it’s last leg on the lift in the next bay.. that car was going to the junkyard for sure. It was on the lift being pronounced fit for the junkyard. The smoke from that fire contaminated that car interior, the paint, just everything, it was a black smoky fire. The people across the street were actually grabbing their most precious belongings and throwing them in the car so they could get out of town before the whole gas station exploded they thought. The chief of police showed up about two minutes later, got out his small fire extinguisher, and put the fire out in about 10 seconds, which was contained just in the one bay. Just smoke damage to the building and that car in the next bay.. we dragged my partially melted completely black and motorcycle out of the building. As we were standing there looking at my motorcycle. The fire trucks rolled up. Two of the firemen jumped off of the fire truck before it even stopped rolling. They had hatchets, and they broke every window around the office portion of the building. That was eight windows about 6 feet wide and 10 feet tall. before the chief of police could get between the firemen and the building to stop them from breaking all the windows. They were gung ho volunteer fireman.
It happened to be the last day of school that year and summer break was starting that day. That was the day I lost my motorcycle. I saved my money for over a year to get that motorcycle. 1968.
that car that was on the lift that was absolutely a piece of junk. That car got a new interior and carpeting and convertible top, a new paint job, for new tires, and anything it needed. I believe it needed Engine work and a transmission. I can’t believe they just didn’t write the guy a check for $500 for the car looking back, or even $1000. At that time you could buy a brand new Volkswagen beetle for $1100.
The gas station got cleaned up, repainted, all new windows, and more business, because people wanted to see what happened.
The fire was my fault so I got nothing. My motorcycle was not insured
The second fire I was connected to, I had a 1968 dodge charger, just like the one in the movie bullet. My buddy Larry was going to paint it for me in a guy he new garage it was a reconditioning shop for used cars that the car dealers send Trade ins to to be spruced up.. it was a cool day for painting. This garage was about. 80 feet long, and could easily accommodate a full tractor trailer. It was set up for detailing cars, painting cars. Since it was cool, my buddy Larry wanted to light the oil furnace so the paint wouldn’t run on my car. when he went into the furnace room, the pilot light on the oil furnace was not lit. So Larry got a newspaper and rolled it very tightly and lit the end and held it near the thermocouple/pilot light trying to get the pilot light to stay on. Since it was an oil furnace, the floor in that room was stained and wet with oil from the furnace that had dripped from a loose fitting or something... after a few minutes, Larry gave up on trying to light the furnace with a rolled up newspaper, and he dropped the newspaper on the floor still smoldering like a cigarette. he close the door to the utility room where the furnace was and came out in the garage and we were thinking about how we were going to paint this car in this cool temperature. all of a sudden Larry said do you smell something. I said yeah. His eyes got real big and he ran over to the utility room and open the door. The flames reached around the door and singed the hair on his arms as the flames wrapped around the door because he opened it. that entire room looked like the inside of a roaring fireplace. I jumped in my charger and took off like I was in a movie for the fire station which was three blocks away. I ran stop signs, I slid around the corner as I approached the fire hall. When I pulled up, they were already jumping on the trucks and they yelled over to me, we know... by the time I got back a few minutes later to the garage along with the firemen, the flames were coming out of the windows like you would see in a movie set. There were 30 gallon drums of paint thinner in there, shelves of car paint stored on racks, oxygen acetylene tanks, we could hear the paint cans popping. And because of the oxygen/acetylene/in the paint thinner, the firemen just let it burn there were no close by houses, but they set up to protect the houses that were nearby just in case. It was a totally concrete long building that just looks like a cinderblock with doors on the ends and a roof.. there were three cars in that garage,, One of them was my buddy Larry’s Oldsmobile 442 without an engine in it. He was modifying the engine. Larry’s 442 and the other two cars in the garage were completely burned. I can still smell the rubber burning.
after the fire was out, Larry called the owner of the garage, Tom. my research, Tom, will be burned your garage down.. Tom said, I’ll be there after supper. He was not even mad. All those cars in the garage were not drivable, so they all got replaced by insurance. Tom made out too.
my point is, fires happen and they are burning before you even notice. To this day I get five fire extinguishers at Christmas to my kids, and I have them on all three floors of my house, and in my garage right where I can get them..
in conclusion, Yep, I’m going to put it into my lease is that they can’t have a motorcycle or anything flammable in the apartment
