My sister-in-law has been a labor and delivery nurse for 3 years now (her first job right out of school), and I have witnessed a serious decline in her mental and physical health ever since. She used to glow with excitement about her job, but now she rarely ever discusses it. When she does, it is almost to reassure us that “it isn’t THAT bad”. She is also a newlywed and I think it has taken a huge toll on their marriage. I’m just thankful that I moved closer to her so I can be more available to her. I dropped out of nursing school during my senior year because I knew in my gut that I was better suited to be a stay-at-home mom. I had a 4.0 GPA and was definitely capable, but did NOT want to bring this abusive, toxic, culture into my life or my marriage. Praying for all of you nurses ❤

My dear I thank you for this video. It is surprising to realize the odds in Nursing I so much loved. It is disheartening to realize I can have the bad experiences I have had so far in the profession I thought was noble in all ramifications.
I entered a nurse residency program at a very prominent hospital in Miami Beach and I remember during my interview the nurse manager asking me if I was “loyal” and I said yes …knowing what I know now I should of ran for the hills but I took the position. It was a 2 yr program and I quit after 4 months my mental/physical health was wayyyyy more important to me than being loyal to an organization…my ex nurse manager sent me an text message dissertation after I quit about how to finish what I start and some other bs that I categorize as trash… I will never regret that decision

I worked 3 night shifts in a row Friday-Sunday got off Monday. Usually only work two days a week but picked up because the unit was short and was bored at home so i agreed. When i leaving work, my manager told me can i work monday because JCAHO was coming that morning. I said no. I helped the unit Sunday and i am done!!!! My manager told me "oh okay you should be a team player i only want team players on my floor" I said i don't care. I don't live at the hospital. Get your staffing together that's not my problem. Clocked out and left. Jobs don't give a damn about you, only what you can do for them. Period. I put in my notice effective immediately because that rubbed me the wrong way. At this point nurses need to look at this profession as a means to an end. Make your money and leave. Block the facility numbers when you're off, don't pick up any extra shifts. Manage your money properly so that way you're not constantly chasing the bag. Use it as a springboard for other opportunities. Find a way to make it work for you. It's possible to use this nursing money to finance a side business.
This is why I dropped out of medical school!!! After working years in the emergency room as an LPA I know this all too well. The health system is terrible in America… Thank you Tawanda for bringing awareness about the toxicity in this field
I agree, I see alot of nurses stuck on jobs they hate because they’re desperate for the paycheck. I always lived within my means and saved and invested in realestate; I was able to walk away from nursing 2 years ago and did ok for myself. Now that I feel better I just restarted by working PRN.
You hit the nail on the head… I’m a nurse and work in a very toxic environment and it is physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting! … I am so ready to quit… I’m just securing my finances before leaving… I will never go back to nursing (not with the way we nurses are treated!) 😢
I moved from LTC to pediatric home health. My mental health is at best for the past three years. I sell vegetables on the side during late spring and summer. Sometimes up to 300-400 a week. Planning on expanding.
Hey Tawanda! Im an NP-Excellent Video! You hit the nail on the head here! Financial Literacy is such a HUGE factor. Nurses must realize that a good salary is not equivalent to wealth. #1 priority behind taking care of your own health as a nurse is establishing a strong financial foundation so that you can WALK AWAY! ❤
Everyone is not ment to be a nurse or caregiver. If its from your heart everything comes naturally, even the environment... Change your occupation. Said with love ❤
Its an overworked, underpayed, underappreciated profession, too much of the time. Part- time now, like most of my established colleagues. We had to, reduce our hours just to stay physically and mentally healthy. Limited exposure. I would never go back to full time in the nursing environment. My sisier retires from that environment soon. She can't wait. Nobody looks back when they go through those doors. Weve more than done our part. Grateful for the health and strength God gives every day 🙏🏽❤️
This confirmed my decision to walk away and break my contract. I have 2 months left and then I graduate my new nurse residency. My goal while my daughter is gone for the summer is to work as many days as possible to pay off all my debt so I am no longer bound to a job I hate. I have paid off over $15,000 working my regular scheduled days plus a couple of extra here and there. Now that I'm comfortable as a new nurse I'm about to pick up the pace drastically. Thank you for all you do. Now let me catch up on all these videos I've missed.
I am so happy I NEVER took on work issues. I leave. This is one of the few cases where we know what it was (supposedly). Many of these cases of suicides we actually do not know if it was their work or more going on.
This was a sad video but as a fellow nurse I know the reality of what you are saying, life is so hard already being short staffed, the last thing we need is bullying in the workplace but it happens and we need to stand up to it and report it promptly to HR. The problem today is that people are so hateful toward each other for a myriad of reasons, people are so unhappy with their life and it spills into their work life and then you become a target, it’s getting really pathetic. We went into nursing to heal and help people not to tear them down, it’s a scary world out there, Tawanda, and I’m afraid it’s not getting any better any time soon!
I am nearing retirement and these past 33 years as an RN has not been easy. I know for a fact that it has affected some major life decisions including relationships. Nursing is very toxic and those who are not in the profession have no idea. I have tried to explain to my family what it’s like and frankly it is hard to put in words. I have seen new grads leave after (some before) their first year and I truly understand why. Thank you for speaking up on this matter.
@@Abi-F.-Mejia Just in short, the comments pretty much explains it all. I feel like the harder we work, more is expected of us. Nurses focus on patients and safety but we are often faced with heavy assignments that put our license at risk. It is not uncommon to work a 12 and 1/2 hour shift without a bathroom break in some units. You go home exhausted only to do it again the next day. If you’re off, you are recuperating until your next shift.
I’m about to graduate soon and plan on paying off the little bit of debt I owe and then finding a new career. F all this…my life and sanity is not worth this. I’m sorry to everyone who found this out later rather than sooner.
You are absolutely right about everything you said, Tawanda. Not all nursing jobs are good for us. Nurses need to know when to walk away from toxic jobs. Not all high paying nursing jobs are good for you. I had this very talk with one of my fellow nurse last night about me leaving a job that I feel is stressful physically and mentally. And he said, but the pay is so much better than where you want to go full-time. And I told him point-blank that I am going to choose my comfort over high paying stressful nursing job. And he looked at me like I was crazy for saying that. 😅
Thank you so much for all of your wisdom. It is truly sad that as a senior nursing student, I see this happening already. Many times professors are so nasty to some students and then I see it from student to student. I pray peace, protection, prosperity over every person working and striving in the health care industry to make it a better place. Also Mrs. Tawanda, we love and need your wisdom so thanks for not quitting!! God bless
I am not a nurse, however this information you’ve provided is vital for anyone who’s working in any position where they seem trapped almost due to financial stability. Your right walking away has to be an option especially in any toxic work environment. My Condolences 💐 to those who lost hope… Thank you for sharing!
As a doula part time you hit it on the nails thank you for this. I left a job after 17 years in child welfare and I noticed managment was ganging up on me I set my exit quit and do not regret it.

If I had heard your speech years ago especially when I first started out in nursing it would have saved me from health issues and mental burnout. No one ever talks about the financial component in making sure you are making wise decisions especially when it comes to how you spend your money and saving!! That is what keeps many nurses in these toxic jobs. Also not networking amongst are selves to tell each other where are good places to work and about the culture of the place. If I had heard your speech when I first started I don’t think I would have stayed in places longer than I should have and I would have stuck up for myself more! Ma’am keep talking and spreading your message many need to hear this. In honor of Tristin Kate Smith.
Nursing is so toxic and full of mean girls. I have learned to stand up for myself after many desperate moments. Thank you for your videos and your advices. I'm still a nursing student so I have experienced a lot of bullying. But now I am stronger and wiser.
Being a CNA can also be toxic. I was in a CNA program and my CNA preceptor actually shoved me to the side to talk to the LPN. The medical field is crazy.
Hey Sis!! We definitely need to have alternatives in plans place. With the demands of life and jobs we have to prioritize our mental health. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🩷

Hi sis I agree with u. Here is my story. New management came abroad at the nursing home rehabilitation center where I work as a full time CNA, they were allowed to cut our many CNA's hours to 24hrs a week, just to gain Bonuses from administrator, DON, Corporate and Managers. "The struggle is real". Can they do that if I was hired full-time? They also start making us very uncomfortable by putting all employees on other units they weren't familiar with. I was told go to workforce, but workforce is all about look for another job. I want to fight it legally so this doesn't happen to anyone else. ANY SUGGESTIONS ANYONE
Very toxic indeed. Lies…lies from the top down and so much bullying. They ask you to “let them know if you have a question or how to support you as a new nurse “, and then come back to use it against you. They absolutely devour their young while the top managers get all the money and take vacations at will.
God bless you Tawana. I’m not even in healthcare but this story really hurt me. Your advice was helpful for me in my toxic public service job. I need to set boundaries, get my finances together, know your why, document everything (personal email!), don’t be loyal or trusting to the job, assess the work culture from the gate, and be ready to walk away
I just read it and my heart aches for her. We are the healers of the world and the system takes advantage of anything good someone has to offer. Keep your head up high healthcare workers and take breaks, self reflect and pray. Dont give up or give in. You are doing Gods work. No matter what they say or do. God has us in his hands.
This is one of the best advice I’ve received with nursing. Thank you for the video. New grad here and trying to figure things out. Thank you once again
interesting video. I think anyone who works in healthcare can relate to this and im not a nurse, working in healthcare can be draining, us healthcare workers should all get together and have a wu sa moment.
Great advise Tawanda. I am a NP and also in financial industry. I have learned so much about financial literacy and financial independence. I think financial literacy should be taught in school. We offer free workshops for those who needs information on financial literacy. Love your content!

Another thing I noticed, the also keep the sweetest easier nursing job to themselves. look into outpatient in your specialty. it's less stressful, more work life balance and sometimes better pay.
I left after 30 years as an RN. It was the best thing I have done. I also did not renew my license. I now work in a low paying, low stress job and couldn't be happier. Financially, it's tough, but I would rather be poor, then continue working in a toxic healthcare system.
I am heartbroken hearing about this nurse. I just read the letter 😢. We go through so much and I pray that I live to see the profession change for the better
Hello Tawanda! I hope all is well with you and your family. I'm happy to hear your perspective on this because you come from a perspective of strenght rather than just blaming the healthcare industry. You're giving real world tips. As a person who has worked in corporate America all of my adult life (graduating nursing school soon) the work culture there is just as nasty, backstabbing and let me mention RACIST that I hear the healthcare industry is. Only thing is that it's not nearly as easy to find another decent paying corporate job as it is to find another nursing job. They don't care about you, your bills or your babies okay? So I know the mental stress. The tips you gave are excellent and universal and should be applied, especially in nursing with the vast opportunities there are compared to most other professions. Loyalty to a toxic job is a no no. Don't be afraid to say "deuces!" And yes document, document, document! And I'm not talking about charting lol. This woman's mental health should also be factored into these conversations because I feel her reaction was extreme and unusual and I just don't know if I can blame her employer for that one as many people have. It's sad all around and I wish she would have had the strenth to walk away or look for another nursing environment such as school nursing or public health nursing instead of thinking this was the end of the road. Sigh, take care of your mental health folks! Especially if you can afford therapy, invest in it!
Hi China, thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment. Everyone you shared is so true. I wanted to bring a different perspective to the conversation because no one knows all the details. However, we have to be LOYAL to ourselves and our commitments outside of these jobs. These hospitals, facilities, and organizations don’t care. We are all just a name attached to a SSN that can be easily replaced. We must stand LOYAL TO OURSELVES. Bless you beautiful soul 🩷
@@chinaarlene7035you're right that nothing is worth your mental health or wellbeing and corporate field is toxic too. The jobforce as a whole puts profits and greed over their employees. Unfortunately, as a therapist I can say that it is very abusive, draining, bullying from management, and toxic in the mental health field too. You'd think in caring helping professions that those in leadership would have care, compassion, and empathy for their employees and patients but it's about money.
@@AccordingToTawandaI appreciate you bringing awareness to these topics with thoughtfulness and compassion. As a therapist it is heartbreaking to see the depression and mental health impacts to healthcare workers and society as a whole. The stress, anxiety, burnout, and abusive toxicity in caring professions is unfortunate. I had many nurses as clients and saw much suicidal depression, ptsd, and panic attack with workers💔
Bless you for doing this video. So many of us struggle with mental health issues as a result of our stressful and toxic work environments. I really value you and your content. ❤
This is a conversation that needs to be had in depth and among the masses of healthcare professionals. So many of us feel "stuck," paralyzed by the thought of walking away from our livelihood that we've invested and struggled to accomplish. However, the moral, mental, and physical abuse that the healthcare system has inflicted upon its staff has become unbearable in many aspects for so many despite establishing boundaries.
I have had co workers end up in the psych unit, due to the stress and toxicity of Nursing. Instead of reassessing their situation, they would return right back to the same working conditions.

I will currently work 6.5 hours a day (doing Home Care & don’t currently see my self going back to bedside) and get paid MORE than I was working 8 hours in the hospital, before the switched to 12 hour shifts!

Thanks for sharing your story. But even more, thank you for choosing YOURSELF👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
What happened in there that made you quit?

At this point nurses need to look at this profession as a means to an end. Make your money and leave. Block the facility numbers when you're off, don't pick up any extra shifts. Manage your money properly so that way you're not constantly chasing the bag. Use it as a springboard for other opportunities. Find a way to make it work for you. It's possible to use this nursing money to finance a side business.
Being in healthcare has forever changed my life.
This is why I dropped out of medical school!!! After working years in the emergency room as an LPA I know this all too well. The health system is terrible in America… Thank you Tawanda for bringing awareness about the toxicity in this field
Absolutely 💯. Healthcare is a very abusive, toxic, and corrupt field. The stress and burnout destroys your physical and mental health.
Yes! I wish I could escape 😢
Every nurse should see this video!!! Well said!!
Thanks so much for watching!

Hi Nacole! Amen!! Good salaries and wealth are Not EQUAL!! Thanks for joining the conversation🩷
Everyone is not ment to be a nurse or caregiver. If its from your heart everything comes naturally, even the environment... Change your occupation. Said with love ❤
Please get a life, even if you have the passion you got to know your self worth because management will take advantage of you
Its an overworked, underpayed, underappreciated profession, too much of the time.
So true Sirius! We know in part. I pray that each and every one of us have the strength to leave and walk away. Thanks for sharing your perspective!
This was a sad video but as a fellow nurse I know the reality of what you are saying, life is so hard already being short staffed, the last thing we need is bullying in the workplace but it happens and we need to stand up to it and report it promptly to HR. The problem today is that people are so hateful toward each other for a myriad of reasons, people are so
unhappy with their life and it spills into their work life and then you become a target, it’s getting really pathetic. We went into nursing to heal and help people not to tear them down, it’s a scary world out there, Tawanda, and I’m afraid it’s not getting any better any time soon!
It is so sad that we are still discussing how toxic nursing STILL is! RIP to her
I am nearing retirement and these past 33 years as an RN has not been easy.
Can you please give some examples of how toxic it is to work as a nurse?
@@Abi-F.-Mejia Just in short, the comments pretty much explains it all. I feel like the harder we work, more is expected of us. Nurses focus on patients and safety but we are often faced with heavy assignments that put our license at risk. It is not uncommon to work a 12 and 1/2 hour shift without a bathroom break in some units. You go home exhausted only to do it again the next day. If you’re off, you are recuperating until your next shift.
@@vickieoliver103 Thank you!

Great video. Nurses please take care of yourself!! These corporations don't care about you!! Choose yourself always!!
Yessssssss KoKo!! YESSSSSSSS!!!! We have to be willing to choose ourselves over these stressful jobs. All money is not good money‼️
Money definitely isn't everything and he's probably going through right now but is pretending everything's ok or he's probably afraid to walk away
Thank you so much for all of your wisdom. It is truly sad that as a senior nursing student, I see this happening already. Also Mrs. Tawanda, we love and need your wisdom so thanks for not quitting!! God bless

I work low page cashier jobs I am doing it because it's less stressful I know I get paid badly however money is not everything and my health is more important

You are giving us a word sis!!! Thank you for keeping the conversation going and for the excellent tips.
Very toxic indeed. Lies…lies from the top down and so much bullying. They ask you to “let them know if you have a question or how to support you as a new nurse “, and then come back to use it against you. They absolutely devour their young while the top managers get all the money and take vacations at will.

So true!

Some years ago our hospital lost a nurse to suicide and we still miss him terribly
I have had co workers end up in the psych unit, due to the stress and toxicity of Nursing. Instead of reassessing their situation, they would return right back to the same working conditions.
It's this way because nurses allow and facilitate it
Suicide will increase, not only in the nurse environment. Life is getting uglier everyday. Its torture to just survive.
